Thermal Performance of Spandrel Assemblies in Glazed Wall Systems: Laboratory Test Design – Challenges and Test Results

Accurate thermal performance calculation procedures for opaque spandrel areas in curtain wall and window wall systems are essential for rating systems when comparing spandrel systems. However, there is a lack of consensus in thermal modeling needed for accurately characterizing heat transfer through spandrel assemblies due to the complex arrangement of materials and structural components. Several studies indicate that conventional 2D thermal simulations may overestimate R-values by 30% compared to physical testing and 3D simulations. Detailed simulations and well-curated laboratory test data are necessary to build confidence in simulation models, which will later be used to develop correlations to improve widely used conventional 2D thermal simulations. This study aims to experimentally test heat transfer through various spandrel assemblies to validate 3D simulation models. Also, the challenges of conducting a thorough testing design along with the solutions would be documented. The team developed a design for testing spandrel assemblies, making appropriate modifications to the existing heat, air, and moisture (HAM) chamber to accommodate the testing needs. Two moveable baffles were designed and fabricated to guide airflow direction parallel to the test article surface. The data acquisition capabilities in the chamber were upgraded to add more than two hundred sensors to the climate and indoor side of the chamber. The goal is to provide a quality dataset for validating complex 3D modeling simulations, which will be used to develop improved thermal simulation techniques that more accurately represent the thermal behavior of spandrel assemblies and their integration within the building envelope. This paper will summarize the results for the boundary conditions of the testing and the temperature variation across different locations of the spandrel assemblies.

To the first Shuttle launch

The major Shuttle-related testing currently in progress includes: static testing of all major elements, full scale ground vibration testing, main propulsion system testing, software verification and validation, qualification testing of many components and subsystems, and SSME verification testing. This paper reviews the current status of the Shuttle program and gives attention to the transition to operations, near-term traffic plans, user-charge policies, and payload integration. It is concluded that the transition from individual space-research projects to a fully integrated Space Transportation System, providing low-cost routine access to space for many users, involves a complete rethinking of the role NASA and the user will play.

Study of the dissociation of molecular hydrogen

Dissociators used to obtain an RF plasma discharge for hydrogen masers and the test system used for operation and evaluation of the dissociators are described. A compact sorption cartridge using a graphite matrix is tested as part of a hydrogen scavenging system. Testing of a vacuum enclosed hydrogen dissociator suitable for long term operation in space is described.

MSTL Re-Start Phase 1.5 Project Final Report

This document provides an overview of re-start efforts at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF), for the SNL Molten Salt Test Loop (MSTL). MSTL is one of the world’s only industrial-scale molten salt test systems, capable of testing commercial-scale thermal hydraulic equipment at an industrial scale, required for confident bankability of products. This work was facilitated as part of the Phase 1 re-start effort for facilitating forensics assessments to inform final refurbishments and upgrades costs and schedule information for revitalizing MSTL for use during a separate Phase 2 effort. This work was facilitated to further de-risk a Phase 2 effort pertaining to the tank and the pump, which were considered during Phase 1 to be high-risk items for a successful re-start. Impact from a successful re-start will allow SNL and other industrial molten salt systems companies, such as those in the Market Utilization Report provided in the Phase 1 submission package. An objective of this document is to also ensure longevity of utilization of MSTL after re start.

Subcritical flutter testing and system identification

Treatment is given of system response evaluation, especially in application to subcritical flight and wind tunnel flutter testing of aircraft. An evaluation is made of various existing techniques, in conjuction with a companion survey which reports theoretical and analog experiments made to study the identification of system response characteristics. Various input excitations are considered, and new techniques for analyzing response are explored, particularly in reference to the prevalent practical case where unwanted input noise is present, such as caused by gusts or wind tunnel turbulence. Further developments are also made of system parameter identification techniques.

How Well Does Kohn–Sham Regularizer Work for Weakly Correlated Systems?

Kohn–Sham regularizer (KSR) is a differentiable machine learning approach to finding the exchange-correlation functional in Kohn–Sham density functional theory that works for strongly correlated systems. Here we test KSR for a weak correlation. We propose spin-adapted KSR (sKSR) with trainable local, semilocal, and nonlocal approximations found by minimizing density and total energy loss. We assess the atoms-to-molecules generalizability by training on one-dimensional (1D) H, He, Li, Be, and Be 2+ and testing on 1D hydrogen chains, LiH, BeH 2 , and helium hydride complexes. The generalization error from our semilocal approximation is comparable to other differentiable approaches, but our nonlocal functional outperforms any existing machine learning functionals, predicting ground-state energies of test systems with a mean absolute error of 2.7 mH.

Status of the ERDA/NASA photovoltaic tests and applications project

The Tests and Applications Project of the ERDA Photovoltaic Program is concerned with the testing of photovoltaic systems and the growth of their use in real terrestrial applications. This activity is an important complement to the development of low cost solar arrays by providing requirements based on application needs and stimulating markets to create demand to absorb increasing production capacity. A photovoltaic system test facility is now operational, market stimulation has been initiated through applications, and standards for terrestrial cell measurements established.

Shuttle payload minimum cost vibroacoustic tests

This paper is directed toward the development of the methodology needed to evaluate cost effective vibroacoustic test plans for Shuttle Spacelab payloads. Statistical decision theory is used to quantitatively evaluate seven alternate test plans by deriving optimum test levels and the expected cost for each multiple mission payload considered. The results indicate that minimum costs can vary by as much as $6 million for the various test plans. The lowest cost approach eliminates component testing and maintains flight vibration reliability by performing subassembly tests at a relatively high acoustic level. Test plans using system testing or combinations of component and assembly level testing are attractive alternatives. Component testing alone is shown not to be cost effective.

Electrical Characterization of Hughes HCMP 1852D and RCA CDP1852D 8-bit, CMOS, I/O Ports

Twenty-five Hughes HCMP 1852D and 25 RCA CDP1852D 8-bit, CMOS, I/O port microcircuits underwent electrical characterization tests. All electrical measurements were performed on a Tektronix S-3260 Test System. Before electrical testing, the devices were subjected to a 168-hour burn-in at 125 C with the inputs biased at 10V. Four of the Hughes parts became inoperable during testing. They exhibited functional failures and out-of-range parametric measurements after a few runs of the test program.
