The shuttle main engine: A first look

Anyone entering the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) team attends a two week course to become familiar with the design and workings of the engine. This course provides intensive coverage of the individual hardware items and their functions. Some individuals, particularly those involved with software maintenance and development, have felt overwhelmed by this volume of material and their lack of a logical framework in which to place it. To provide this logical framework, it was decided that a brief self-taught introduction to the overall operation of the SSME should be designed. To aid the people or new team members with an interest in the software, this new course should also explain the structure and functioning of the controller and its software. This paper presents a description of this presentation.

AmpSuite

Seismic amplitudes offer vital information about explosion source characteristics, including discrimination and yield estimation. To take advantage of this, we developed an interactive Python package to measure, control data quality, generate broad area propagation models and perform discrimination and estimate yield. Propagation models are essential in support of transportable yield and broad area discrimination. The key benefit of this package will be its ability to continuously integrate data and new techniques. The AmpSuite framework will provide standardized, repeatable, and accurate model generation and characterization routines. The capability is crucial for monitoring agencies tasked with rapid and high-quality seismic event characterization. The AmpSuite software includes a series of independent modules to perform: • Direct Phase Amplitude Measurement and Storage • Coda Envelope Measurement and Storage • Data Quality Control • New Propagation Model Developments • Seismic Discrimination and Analysis • Yield Estimation and supporting utility software. The AmpSuite software provides comprehensive solutions for monitoring agencies seeking to optimize model generation and event analysis within a contemporary Python framework. Stakeholders (AFTAC) have begun to move towards the Python language for scientific analysis as a new workforce emerges.

Towards Acceptance Testing at the Exascale Frontier

At the 2007 Cray User Group meeting, the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) introduced the OLCF Test Harness (OTH), a framework[1] used for acceptance testing of the Jaguar supercomputer[2]. Since then, the OTH framework has evolved to version 2.0 which adds new features and streamlines usability. The OTH is the key piece of software used to orchestrate acceptance testing for all OLCF computational resources before they are deployed for production use, including our leadership class high performance computing (HPC) systems. The OTH framework is written in Python and is publicly available[3].In this paper, we first describe the requirements, design, and structure of the OTH. Then, we present specific improvements developed to support acceptance testing of the OLCF’s Summit system[4]. We will also showcase new OTH features that have been added to streamline the acceptance test process as well as the motivation behind those changes. As part of this work, we also evaluated different workflow tools in order to determine whether these tools could complement the OTH in two key areas: automation and reporting. The advantages and disadvantages identified with each tool will be discussed. Lastly, we summarize the challenges and lessons learned collected from using the OTH for the acceptance of the last three flagship systems at the OLCF. These may be useful for other HPC centers developing their own testing frameworks or those interested in using the OTH.

Towards a mature measurement environment: Creating a software engineering research environment

Software engineering researchers are building tools, defining methods, and models; however, there are problems with the nature and style of the research. The research is typically bottom-up, done in isolation so the pieces cannot be easily logically or physically integrated. A great deal of the research is essentially the packaging of a particular piece of technology with little indication of how the work would be integrated with other prices of research. The research is not aimed at solving the real problems of software engineering, i.e., the development and maintenance of quality systems in a productive manner. The research results are not evaluated or analyzed via experimentation or refined and tailored to the application environment. Thus, it cannot be easily transferred into practice. Because of these limitations we have not been able to understand the components of the discipline as a coherent whole and the relationships between various models of the process and product. What is needed is a top down experimental, evolutionary framework in which research can be focused, logically and physically integrated to produce quality software productively, and evaluated and tailored to the application environment. This implies the need for experimentation, which in turn implies the need for a laboratory that is associated with the artifact we are studying. This laboratory can only exist in an environment where software is being built, i.e., as part of a real software development and maintenance organization. Thus, we propose that Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL) type activities exist in all organizations to support software engineering research. We describe the SEL from a researcher's point of view, and discuss the corporate and government benefits of the SEL. The discussion focuses on the benefits to the research community.

An Introduction to Flight Software Development: FSW Today, FSW 2010

Experience and knowledge gained from ongoing maintenance of Space Shuttle Flight Software and new development projects including Cockpit Avionics Upgrade are applied to projected needs of the National Space Exploration Vision through Spiral 2. Lessons learned from these current activities are applied to create a sustainable, reliable model for development of critical software to support Project Constellation. This presentation introduces the technologies, methodologies, and infrastructure needed to produce and sustain high quality software. It will propose what is needed to support a Vision for Space Exploration that places demands on the innovation and productivity needed to support future space exploration. The technologies in use today within FSW development include tools that provide requirements tracking, integrated change management, modeling and simulation software. Specific challenges that have been met include the introduction and integration of Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) Real Time Operating System for critical functions. Though technology prediction has proved to be imprecise, Project Constellation requirements will need continued integration of new technology with evolving methodologies and changing project infrastructure. Targets for continued technology investment are integrated health monitoring and management, self healing software, standard payload interfaces, autonomous operation, and improvements in training. Emulation of the target hardware will also allow significant streamlining of development and testing. The methodologies in use today for FSW development are object oriented UML design, iterative development using independent components, as well as rapid prototyping . In addition, Lean Six Sigma and CMMI play a critical role in the quality and efficiency of the workforce processes. Over the next six years, we expect these methodologies to merge with other improvements into a consolidated office culture with all processes being guided by automated office assistants. The infrastructure in use today includes strict software development and configuration management procedures, including strong control of resource management and critical skills coverage. This will evolve to a fully integrated staff organization with efficient and effective communication throughout all levels guided by a Mission-Systems Architecture framework with focus on risk management and attention toward inevitable product obsolescence. This infrastructure of computing equipment, software and processes will itself be subject to technological change and need for management of change and improvement,

Safety Metrics for Human-Computer Controlled Systems

The rapid growth of computer technology and innovation has played a significant role in the rise of computer automation of human tasks in modem production systems across all industries. Although the rationale for automation has been to eliminate "human error" or to relieve humans from manual repetitive tasks, various computer-related hazards and accidents have emerged as a direct result of increased system complexity attributed to computer automation. The risk assessment techniques utilized for electromechanical systems are not suitable for today's software-intensive systems or complex human-computer controlled systems. This thesis will propose a new systemic model-based framework for analyzing risk in safety-critical systems where both computers and humans are controlling safety-critical functions. A new systems accident model will be developed based upon modem systems theory and human cognitive processes to better characterize system accidents, the role of human operators, and the influence of software in its direct control of significant system functions Better risk assessments will then be achievable through the application of this new framework to complex human-computer controlled systems.

ADAM: A web platform for graph-based modeling and optimization of supply chains

Modeling and optimization are essential tasks that arise in the analysis and design of supply chains (SCs). SC models are essential for understanding emergent behavior such as transactions between participants, inherent value of products exchanged, as well as impact of externalities (e.g., policy and climate) and of constraints. Unfortunately, most users of SC models have limited expertise in mathematical optimization, and this hinders the adoption of advanced decision-making tools. Here, in this work, we present ADAM, a web platform that enables the modeling and optimization of SCs. ADAM facilitates modeling by leveraging intuitive and compact graph-based abstractions that allow the user to express dependencies between locations, products, and participants. ADAM model objects serve as repositories of experimental, technology, and socio-economic data; moreover, the graph abstractions facilitate the organization and exchange of models and provides a natural framework for education and outreach. Here, we discuss the graph abstractions and software design principles behind ADAM, its key functional features and workflows, and application examples.

Towards AI-assisted neutrino flavor theory design

Particle physics theories, such as those which explain neutrino flavor mixing, arise from a vast landscape of model-building possibilities. A model’s construction typically relies on the intuition of theorists. It also requires considerable effort to identify appropriate symmetry groups, assign field representations, and extract predictions for comparison with experimental data. We develop Autonomous Model Builder (AMBer), a framework in which a reinforcement learning agent interacts with a streamlined physics software pipeline to search these spaces efficiently. AMBer selects symmetry groups, particle content, and group representation assignments to construct models while minimizing the number of free parameters introduced. We validate our approach in well-studied regions of theory space and extend the exploration to a previously unexamined symmetry group. While demonstrated in the context of neutrino flavor theories, this approach of reinforcement learning with physics software feedback may be extended to other theoretical model-building problems in the future.

DRAM for distilling microbial metabolism to automate the curation of microbiome function

Abstract Microbial and viral communities transform the chemistry of Earth's ecosystems, yet the specific reactions catalyzed by these biological engines are hard to decode due to the absence of a scalable, metabolically resolved, annotation software. Here, we present DRAM (Distilled and Refined Annotation of Metabolism), a framework to translate the deluge of microbiome-based genomic information into a catalog of microbial traits. To demonstrate the applicability of DRAM across metabolically diverse genomes, we evaluated DRAM performance on a defined, in silico soil community and previously published human gut metagenomes. We show that DRAM accurately assigned microbial contributions to geochemical cycles and automated the partitioning of gut microbial carbohydrate metabolism at substrate levels. DRAM-v, the viral mode of DRAM, established rules to identify virally-encoded auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs), resulting in the metabolic categorization of thousands of putative AMGs from soils and guts. Together DRAM and DRAM-v provide critical metabolic profiling capabilities that decipher mechanisms underpinning microbiome function.

Prototype Data Acquisition and Slow Control Systems for the Mu2e Experiment

The Mu2e experiment at the Fermilab Muon Campus will search for the coherent neutrinoless conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus with a sensitivity improvement by a factor of 10 000 over existing limits. Such a charged lepton flavor-violating reaction probes new physics at a scale unavailable with direct searches at either present or planned high-energy colliders. The Mu2e Trigger and Data Acquisition (TDAQ) system exploits otsdaq as its online Data Acquisition System (DAQ) solution. Furthermore, developed at Fermilab, otsdaq integrates both the artdaq DAQ and the art analysis frameworks for event transfer, filtering, and processing. otsdaq is an online DAQ software suite with a focus on flexibility and scalability and provides a multi-user, web-based, interface accessible through a web browser. The read out controllers (ROCs) stream out zero-suppressed data continuously from the detector subsystems to the data transfer controllers (DTCs). The data stream is then read over the peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe) bus to a software filter algorithm that selects events which are combined with the data flux coming from a cosmic-ray veto (CRV) system. The detector control system (DCS) has been developed using the experimental physics and industrial control system (EPICS) open source platform for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving. The DCS has been integrated into otsdaq. A prototype of the TDAQ system and the DCS has been built at Fermilab's Feynman Computing Center. In this article, we report on the progress of the integration of this prototype in the online otsdaq software.

NISQ Benchmarking

Test suite of quantum algorithms for Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) computers. The test suite includes benchmark-style code for quantum volume circuits (QV), fairness sampling circuits, quantum telecloning circuits, and other NISQ benchmark style algorithms on small problems (i.e., up to 100 qubits), such as Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE), Hamiltonian Simulation, and Grover unstructured search example circuits. These benchmark-style applications are implemented in quantum software packages, mostly IBM's QISKIT, but may include vendor-specific frameworks, such as PyQuil (for Rigetti) or Q\# for Microsoft, or CirQ (for Google) as the test suite grows with the vendor sample. The test suite also includes numerical simulation code for Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz (QAOA) algorithms, VQE, Hamiltonian Simulation and search examples. Numerical simulation code simulates quantum computers on classical computers, which is only possible for small problem instances; the implementation framework of choice is typically within Python, using the numpy/scipy libraries as well as extensions to the Julia language.
