The Hardware of Smaller Clusters (V.3.0)

Chris Saunders and three technologists are in high demand from Sandia’s deep learning teams, and they’re kept busy by building new clusters of computer nodes for researchers who need the power of supercomputing on a smaller scale. Sandia researchers working on Laboratory Directed Research & Development (LDRD) projects, or innovative ideas for solutions on short timeframes, formulate new ideas on old themes and frequently rely on smaller cluster machines to help solve problems before introducing their code to larger HPC resources. These research teams need an agile hardware and software environment where nascent ideas can be tested and cultivated on a smaller scale.

Comprehensive Characterization of Mixed Metal Oxide Catalysts for Enhanced Catalyst Lifetime During Bio-Based C2-C6 Oxygenates to Olefins Processes (CRADA CRD-18-00728 Final Report)

Participant has developed mixed metal oxide (MMO) catalysts to selectively convert biomass-derived C2-C6 oxygenates to olefins and then hydrocarbon fuels to meet DOE 2022 fuel targets. Selective conversion ethanol to isobutylene with MMO catalysts (ZnOZrOx) requires low ethanol feeds to maintain performance. Increasing the feed results in rapid catalyst deactivation. Participant has increased catalyst stability by adding additional metal oxides. However, variations in performance based on the level and type of additive and catalytic conditions have been observed. This project will use advanced catalyst characterization methods through the ChemCatBio Advanced Catalyst Synthesis and Characterization (ACSC) project to gain insight into key catalyst features and deactivation modes with the goal of tailoring catalyst composition to improve performance.

A Review of International Field Experience with Well Integrity at Carbon Utilization and Storage Sites

This report details findings from a survey of well integrity experiences elicited from operators of geologic carbon storage (GCS) and carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) sites around the world. The survey consisted of 41 questions organized in four sections and its goal was to obtain information about site characteristics and operator experiences with well integrity, monitoring methods, and risk assessment of legacy wells. Current literature relevant to the survey questions was also reviewed and summarized to provide context for survey responses and identify areas where field experiences with well integrity do and do not align with the current state of research.

Revolutionizing observations and predictability of Arctic system dynamics through next-generation dense, heterogeneous and intelligent wireless sensor networks with embedded AI

The Arctic region is a complex and dynamic system, where changes in temperature and partitioning between water in solid, liquid and vapor phase are fundamentally reshaping hydro-biogeochemical fluxes from the bedrock to the atmosphere. The increasing temperature and frequency of extreme heat, precipitation and fire events (Wang et al., 2017; Meredith et al., 2019) have critical consequences for the Arctic ecosystems and people, as well as for the global climate system. Although many observational and remote sensing activities have been on-going, detailed ecosystem processes – particularly related to controls on and impacts of permafrost thaw – are difficult to detect or measure. To improve the understanding and prediction of these extreme events and their consequences, we need a revolution in the way we collect ground-based observations from hillslope to pan-Arctic scales and couple them with satellite imagery and models to deliver rich, actionable, and scale-appropriate data.

Water Cycle-Driven Infectious Diseases as Multiscale, Reliable, Continuously Updating Water Cycle Sensors

We propose a novel synthesis of observational and simulated data (climatological and biological) to enhance understanding of the real-world interplay between climate (here, the water cycle) and the epidemiology of water cycle-driven infectious disease. Aligning with Focal Area 2, predictive modeling using AI techniques, we will develop systems of hierarchical models to discover latent features of the water cycle. Our approach will leverage state-of-the-art in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to measure the degree to which climate change-driven shifts in water cycle can be predicted by supplementing sparse and irregular climate data with water cycle-driven infectious disease resources.

Sequim Bay Underwater UXO Prototype Demonstration Site: Field Operations Summary, 2020

This report provides a summary of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL’s) activities to initiate Phase II development of the Sequim Bay Underwater UXO Prototype demonstration site (MR-2735) in 2020. Testbed development and field operations were conducted by PNNL’s Coastal and Marine Research Laboratory (MCRL) in support of the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) underwater Munitions Response (MR) program. A series of standardized underwater unexploded ordnance (UXO) demonstration sites (“testbeds”) are being developed by SERDP/ESTCP to test, evaluate, and demonstrate technologies that can detect, geolocate, and classify proud and buried munitions in 0–35 m water depths. As a prototype demonstration site, Sequim Bay is a semi-enclosed marine waterbody containing sand and mud sediments with minimal clutter in 5–30 m water depths. MCRL is located at the entrance to Sequim Bay, where it provides operational, logistical, and facilities support for testbed activities.

Towards Predictive Plasma Science and Engineering through Revolutionary Multi-Scale Algorithms and Models (Final Report)

This report describes the high-level accomplishments from the Plasma Science and Engineering Grand Challenge LDRD at Sandia National Laboratories. The Laboratory has a need to demonstrate predictive capabilities to model plasma phenomena in order to rapidly accelerate engineering development in several mission areas. The purpose of this Grand Challenge LDRD was to advance the fundamental models, methods, and algorithms along with supporting electrode science foundation to enable a revolutionary shift towards predictive plasma engineering design principles. This project integrated the SNL knowledge base in computer science, plasma physics, materials science, applied mathematics, and relevant application engineering to establish new cross-laboratory collaborations on these topics. As an initial exemplar, this project focused efforts on improving multi-scale modeling capabilities that are utilized to predict the electrical power delivery on large-scale pulsed power accelerators. Specifically, this LDRD was structured into three primary research thrusts that, when integrated, enable complex simulations of these devices: (1) the exploration of multi-scale models describing the desorption of contaminants from pulsed power electrodes, (2) the development of improved algorithms and code technologies to treat the multi-physics phenomena required to predict device performance, and (3) the creation of a rigorous verification and validation infrastructure to evaluate the codes and models across a range of challenge problems. These components were integrated into initial demonstrations of the largest simulations of multi-level vacuum power flow completed to-date, executed on the leading HPC computing machines available in the NNSA complex today. These preliminary studies indicate relevant pulsed power engineering design simulations can now be completed in (of order) several days, a significant improvement over pre-LDRD levels of performance.
