The application of SETI data to radio astronomy is studied. The number of continuum radio sources in the 1-10 GHz region to be counted and cataloged is predicted. The radio luminosity functions for steep and flat spectrum sources at 2, 8, and 22 GHz are derived using the model of Peacock and Gull (1981). The relation between source number and flux density is analyzed and the sensitivity of the system is evaluated.
Results are reported from a 6-cm VLA survey of five confirmed Ba II stars and eight mild Ba II stars, undertaken to search for evidence of gyrosynchrotron emission or thermal emission from the primary star's wind that is enhanced or photoionized by a white dwarf companion. Of these 13 stars, only Beta UMi was detected as a possible radio source at a flux level of 0.11 mJy (3sigma). The 6-cm radio luminosities (L6) of the other stars are as small as log L6 less than or equal to 14.0 and are an order of magnitude or more lower than the average levels found in RS CVn systems, but are consistent with the L6 upper limits previously found for stars of spectral type similar to the Ba II stars and normal elemental abundances. The upper limit to the radio luminosity for the possible mild Ba II star 56 Peg, when combined with its previously known X-ray luminosity, may provide useful constraints on the various models that have been proposed for this interesting object, once its orbital period is known.
Dynamic spectrograms of the low-frequency interplanetary radio emissions as observed by Voyagers 1 and 2 from 1983 through mid-1986 are reported. The radio emissions were observed to be most intense in the latter portion of 1983 at 3 kHz but have also been detected at 2 kHz. The emission has been present almost continuously at either 2 or 3 kHz since late 1983. The spectrograms presented herein show that the phenomenon appears almost identically as observed by the two spacecraft separated by more than 10 AU, at least at the higher frequency. One feature revealed by the dynamic spectrograms which had not been noticed previously is a gradual rise in frequency of the 3-kHz component following the onset of the late 1983 event. These new observations reinforce the conclusion that the low-frequency emissions are freely propagating radio waves, but the two-component spectral structure implies that the previous model of emission at twice the plasma frequency at the inner heliosphere shock is inadequate to fully account for the observations. Either an additional source region or an additional source mechanism is suggested.
Meterwave maps of the solar corona made with the Clark Lake Radioheliograph at 30.9, 50, and 73.8 MHz for one solar rotation are presented. They are compared and contrasted with optical data: 10,830 A maps, white-light coronagraph images (SOLWIND and Mauna Loa K coronameter), and forbidden line scans. Most of the sources in the radio maps persist for two days or more, and appear to rotate approximately with the solar rate. A coronal hole seen against the disk at all three frequencies shows interesting similarities and significant differences with the optical signatures of the hole. Elongated features of the 50 MHz corona correspond rather well to the azimuthal position of white light streamers seen in SOLWIND images. Synoptic charts made from the radio maps show overall similarities to synoptic charts constructed from (limb) coronagraph data. Some of the differences may result from the different weightings given by the radio and optical data to density and temperature, or by the different sensitivities to nonradial geometries. It is shown that the combined use of meter wave and optical images provides considerable new insights into the three-dimensional structure of the low to middle corona.
Hundreds of stars have now been detected at radio wavelengths. At least four processes are believed to cause the radio emission: thermal bremsstrahlung, gyrosynchrotron, cyclotron maser, and plasma radiation. Here the characteristics of the various classes of detected stars are reviewed, along with the putative reasons for the radio emission. The classes of stars described include: single stars, binaries containing two main sequences and/or giant stars, binaries containing one white dwarf, and binaries containing one neutron star or black hole.
The paper describes the technique used to record time delay and waveform measurements for the Giotto radio science experiment of ESA's mission to comet Halley. The data were taken by using either two-way measurements (during pre- and post-encounter) or one-way measurements (during encounter with comet Halley), the downlink of the radio signal of the Giotto spacecraft being received at 8.4 GHz by the 64 m tracking stations of NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN). The waveform measurements were obtained at a sampling frequency of 50 kHz with an open-loop receiver assembly at DSN station Canberra as recently used for the Voyager/Uranus fly-by. Performance and calibration data are given as relevant to the radio subsystems on the ground and aboard Giotto.
The Soviet Phobos Lander mission will place two spacecraft on the Martian moon Phobos in 1989. Measurements of the range from Earth-based stations to the landers will allow an accurate determination of the ephemerides of Phobos and Mars. Delta Very Long Base Interferometry (VLBI) between the landers and compact radio sources nearby on the sky will be used to obtain precise estimates of the angular offset between the radio and planetary reference frames. The accuracy of this frame-tie estimate is expected to be in the vicinity of 10 mrad, depending on how well several error sources can be controlled (calibrated or reduced). Many candidate radio sources for VLBI measurements were identified, but additional work is necessary to select those sources which have characteristics appropriate to the present application. Strategies for performing the source selection are described.
The NASA Deep Space Network operates and maintains the Earth-based two-way communications link for unmanned spacecraft exploring the solar system. It is NASA's policy to also make the Network's facilities available for radio astronomy observations. The Network's microwave communication systems and facilities are being continually upgraded. This revised document, first published in 1982, describes the Network's current radio astronomy capabilities and future capabilities that will be made available by the ongoing Network upgrade. The Bibliography, which includes published papers and articles resulting from radio astronomy observations conducted with Network facilities, has been updated to include papers to May 1987.
Radio continuum observations of the R Aqr symbiotic star system, using the compact D configuration of the VLA at 6-cm wavelength, reveal a large-scale about 2-arcmin structure engulfing the binary, which has long been known to have a similar optical nebula. This optical/radio nebula possesses about 4 x 10 to the 42nd ergs of kinetic energy which is typical of a recurrent nova outburst. Moreover, a cluster of a dozen additional 6-cm radio sources were observed in proximity to R Aqr, most of these discrete sources lie about 3 arcmin south and/or west of R Aqr and, coupled with previous 20-cm data, spectral indices limits suggest a thermal nature for some of these sources. If the thermal members of the cluster are associated with R Aqr, it may indicate a prehistoric eruption of the system's suspected recurrent nova. The nonthermal cluster members may be extragalactic background radio sources.
The central region of the Corona Australis molecular cloud surrounding the stars R and TY CrA has been studied using the VLA at 6 cm. Eleven radio sources are detected including five associated with pre-main-sequence objects. The most striking is associated with the near-IR source IRS 7 and shows a complex structure comprising two strong pointlike sources positioned either side of the deeply embedded IR source and two extended lobes of radio emission. The IRS 7 radio source appears to be similar to that associated with Lynds 1551 IRS 5 but has a considerably larger angular size. The other detected sources include the massive pre-main-sequence star TY CrA, the near-IR sources IRS 1 and IRS 5, and the Herbig-Haro object HH 101. The stars R and T CrA were not detected.
A statistical analysis is given of the relationships between global emission properties of spiral galaxies, including the radio continuum, far-infared, near-infrared H-band, optical (B), and X-ray emission. Different properties are observed in early-type and in late-type spiral galaxies, which can be ascribed to the presence of prominent bulges in the former. In late-type spirals, the statistical properties of the emission at different wavelengths are consistent with a common disk/arm origin. The power-law exponents of the correlations are consistent with a steeper IMF in low-luminosity galaxies and with the presence of an obscured starburst component in high-luminosity galaxies. The strongest correlation of the radio continuum luminosity with any other variable is with the far-infrared, suggesting that the radio emission is disjoint from the older low-mass stellar component.
Uranium continuum radio emission detected by the Voyager 2 Planetary Radio Astronomy experiment during the January 1986 encounter is considered. The continuum emissions comprised four components (equatorial emissions, anomaly emissions, strong nightside emissions, and weak nightside emissions) associated with different sources. The equatorial emissions appeared most prominently during the days before closest approach and extended from 40 kHz or below to about 120 kHz. The anomaly emissions were seen about 12 hours before closest approach and extended to about 250 kHz. The agreement found between Miranda's phase and strong radio emission at 20.4 kHz, just after closest approach, suggests intense dynamic activity on the Miranda L shell.
The hardware of the Planetary Radio Astronomy Experiment aboard Voyager 2 and the results of the measurements of radio emissions from Uranus are described. Strong 40-kHz to 850-kHz radio emissions were detected after closest approach on the day-side of Uranus. The time variations of these emissions were periodic, with a period of 17.24 h closely matching that of Uranus's rotation and evidently being controlled by the strength and shape of its magnetic field. The instrument also recorded possible Uranian electrostatic discharges, vertex early arcs occurring in sequences of more than a dozen events with approximately 10-min period, and very intense isolated bursts lasting tens of minutes.
The general behavior of flat-spectrum (compact) radio sources is examined in terms of adiabatic-jet models. Two puzzling properties - namely, (1) the broad, rather flat spectrum (over a large range of radio frequencies) and (2) the relatively slow decay of burst amplitude (with decreasing radio frequency) - are explained. Acceptable models are characterized by the following: (1) a nearly conical, adiabatic jet, with conserved magnetic flux transverse to the axis of the jet; (2) prolonged injection (for which the duration of an event exceeds the apparent transit time scale); and (3) a transparent spectral index which is not too steep. It is suggested that the acceleration mechanism in the core of compact jets may differ substantially from that far from the core, producing a flatter electron number index s = 1.4-2.6.
The preliminary results of a search for infrared counterparts to compact continuum radio sources found within 0.5 deg of the Galactic plane are presented. Out of 75 positions searched, nine very red sources, each with a probability of less than 0.01 of being a random field star, were found. Most of the nine sources are characterized by deep silicate absorption features at 10 microns and a red energy distribution that continues to rise beyond 25 microns. Six of the sources are best explained as late O or early B stars exciting a compact H II region. The radio emission is close to that expected for the rate of emission of ionizing photons for a normal main-sequence star. Although these H II regions are compact, they are not sufficiently dusty in the immediate environment of the star to significantly reduce the ionizing flux. Three of the sources show considerably more emission than expected for a main-sequence star, indicating they are either hotter than a main-sequence star with the same luminosity or the radio emision is nonthermal and coming from a more exotic object.
The observation of midlatitude structures using passive radio astronomy techniques is discussed, with particular attention being given to the low-frequency radio telescope at the Clark Lake Radio Observatory. The present telescope operates in the 10-125-MHz frequency range. Observations of the ionosphere at separations of a few kilometers to a few hundreds of kilometers by the lines of sight to sources are possible, allowing the determination of the amplitude, wavelength, direction of propagation, and propagation speed of ionospheric waves. Data are considered on large-scale ionospheric gradients and the two-dimensional shapes and sizes of ionospheric irregularities.
The discovery of extremely unusual structure in the radio source MG1131+0456 is reported. In a radio map with subsarcsecond resolution the object appears as an elliptical ring of emission accompanied by a pair of more compact sources, nearly diametrically opposed and offset by about 0.3 arcsec to the southwest of the ring. There is a faint, slightly extended, optical counterpart. A continuum but no emission lines is detected in its spectrum; therefore, the redshift of the counterpart is unknown. The radio morphology suggests that this source may be an example of an 'Einstein ring', a highly symmetric case of gravitational lensing in which the source is imaged into a ring. Other explanations are considered and excluded by the data. Another possibility is that MG1131+04565 represents a new type of astronomical object.
Some stars hotter than 10,000 K show propensity for unusual surface abundances and excessive magnetic fields. These peculiar stars, Ap and Bp in the spectral nomenclature, show unusually prominent absorption lines of heavier elements. Rapid rotation and strong magnetic fields are revealed by line shapes and Zeeman splitting. VLBI is here used to directly probe the source size and brightness temperature of weak radio emission recently discovered from two isolated Bp stars, sigma Orionis E and HD37017. The emitting zone for each star is no more than 6 stellar diameters in extent, reflecting brightness temperatures of more than one billion K. Such high surface brightness resembles gyrosynchrotron radiation from mildly relativistic electrons trapped in the strong magnetic fields surrounding these stars. Compact radio radiation from these two stars presents new opportunities for probing the physical environments of early-type stars and for precise radio astrometry.
