Evaporator Temperature Transient Testing of a High-Performance Sodium Filled Heat Pipe

Heat pipes are two-phase heat transfer devices that enable passive removal of heat from the reactor core to the power conversion system in heat pipe-cooled microreactor designs. Experimental investigations of heat pipe transients are needed for technology demonstration, verification and validation of numerical codes, and the establishment of regulatory requirements. The Single Primary Heat Extraction and Removal Emulator (SPHERE) facility at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) serves as a platform for evaluating the dynamic response of high-temperature heat pipes under a variety of operating conditions. The present work details the experimental investigation of a high-performance, defined as over 2 kW sodium heat pipe subjected to rapid input power fluctuations induced by sudden changes in the evaporator temperature setpoint. In addition, the heat pipe was subjected to an asymmetrical heat load where a subset of heaters operated at 30% and 70% below their nominal power. These experimental conditions were chosen to simulate thermal and operational stresses expected to be encountered in microreactors to provide data on heat pipe behavior during such important transient events. Key data and performance metrics, including time series of temperatures and strains, axial temperature profiles, thermal response times, and heat transfer capabilities, the thermal output over thermal input, were reported and discussed. The results highlight the resilience of heat pipes, revealing their potential to maintain thermal stability and efficiency under varying power loads. Lastly, the paper concludes with a discussion on the significance of the results and their implications for future research.

Improved charge extraction in inverted perovskite solar cells with dual-site-binding ligands

Inverted (pin) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) afford improved operating stability in comparison to their nip counterparts but have lagged in power conversion efficiency (PCE). The energetic losses responsible for this PCE deficit in pin PSCs occur primarily at the interfaces between the perovskite and the charge-transport layers. Additive and surface treatments that use passivating ligands usually bind to a single active binding site: This dense packing of electrically resistive passivants perpendicular to the surface may limit the fill factor in pin PSCs. We identified ligands that bind two neighboring lead(II) ion (Pb 2+ ) defect sites in a planar ligand orientation on the perovskite. We fabricated pin PSCs and report a certified quasi–steady state PCE of 26.15 and 24.74% for 0.05– and 1.04–square centimeter illuminated areas, respectively. The devices retain 95% of their initial PCE after 1200 hours of continuous 1 sun maximum power point operation at 65°C.

Overcoming significant challenges in extracting off-stoichiometric thermodynamics using the compound energy formalism through complementary use of experimental and first principles data: A case study of Ba 1-x Sr x FeO 3-δ

The compound energy formalism (CEF) is a powerful framework to describe the thermodynamics of metal oxides as a function of off-stoichiometry, temperature, and composition. The thermodynamic properties are crucial materials design attributes in metal oxide-based oxygen-exchange chemical processes. Despite the richness of information an accurate CEF model provides, a method to determine a unique and accurate fit for oxygen exchange materials remains elusive. This contribution details a method for fitting the CEF model that overcomes the current fitting challenges through three innovations: 1) the combination of density functional theory calculations with experimental data decorrelates excess terms and delineates the enthalpic/entropic contributions to the Gibbs free energy; 2) a systematic determination of the important CEF model terms, removing thermodynamic predetermining human intervention; 3) a self-consistent solution of the starting oxygen offstoichiometry (δ 0 ) of thermogravimetric measurements. Thus, our method enables the reliable extraction of off-stoichiometric metal oxide thermodynamic properties and facilitates rapid materials compositional screening, and reliable process design of systems dependent on off-stoichiometric redox-active metal oxides. We apply this method to a Ba x Sr 1-x FeO 3-δ test case. We find by systematically examining the performance of the CEF model fit with and without each innovation that all three innovations are necessary for an accurate fit. We determined that reduction enthalpy is higher and more sensitive to off-stoichiometry when the Sr fraction is large (139.5 and 185.3 kJ/mol O 2 for SrFeO 3 at δ = 0 and δ = 0.5, respectively vs. nearly constant 83 kJ/mol O 2 for BaFeO 3 ). However, the reduction entropy is mostly insensitive to Sr fraction, but highly dependent on δ suggesting larger contributions in the non-configurational entropy parameters.

Lunar Helium-3: Mining Concepts, Extraction Research, and Potential ISRU Synergies

The M-3 miner was designed to excavate 1258 tonnes/hr with a bucket wheel excavator and process 556 tonnes/hr (during the lunar daytime) of <100 μm regolith through a 12 MW solar concentrator powered heat pipe heat exchanger(HPHX). The HPHX was designed to heat the regolith up to 700°C to release the implanted solar wind volatiles and recuperate 85% of the input heat. Considering a 20 ppb 3He concentration in the regolith, 66kg of 3He would be captured in onboard storage tanks over the course of one year. This mining effort would also result in the release hundreds of tonnes of other valuable volatile by-products, including water and hydrogen, that could be used to support sustainable lunar exploration. In the more near term, a mining operation to demonstrate the ability to collect 15 tonnes water for liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen propellant from 5% water rich regolith may require ~400 tonnes of regolith to be excavated. This type of pilot scale operation could also demonstrate the ability to extract about 6 g of 3He, assuming the 3He concentration in permanently shadowed regions on the Moon is similar to that of equatorial regions.

Planck 2018 results - IV. Diffuse component separation

We present full-sky maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and polarized synchrotron and thermal dust emission, derived from the third set of Planck frequency maps. These products have significantly lower contamination from instrumental systematic effects than previous versions. The methodologies used to derive these maps follow closely those described in earlier papers, adopting four methods (Commander, NILC, SEVEM, and SMICA) to extract the CMB component, as well as three methods (Commander, GNILC, and SMICA) to extract astrophysical components. Our revised CMB temperature maps agree with corresponding products in the Planck 2015 delivery, whereas the polarization maps exhibit significantly lower large-scale power, reflecting the improved data processing described in companion papers; however, the noise properties of the resulting data products are complicated, and the best available end-to-end simulations exhibit relative biases with respect to the data at the few percent level. Using these maps, we are for the first time able to fit the spectral index of thermal dust independently over 3° regions. We derive a conservative estimate of the mean spectral index of polarized thermal dust emission of β d = 1.55 ± 0.05, where the uncertainty marginalizes both over all known systematic uncertainties and different estimation techniques. For polarized synchrotron emission, we find a mean spectral index of β s = -3.1 ± 0.1, consistent with previously reported measurements. We note that the current data processing does not allow for construction of unbiased single-bolometer maps, and this limits our ability to extract CO emission and correlated components. The foreground results for intensity derived in this paper therefore do not supersede corresponding Planck 2015 products. For polarization the new results supersede the corresponding 2015 products in all respects.

Simulation of enhanced light extraction from periodic, disordered, and quasi-periodic OLED structures

Here we have developed a rigorous scattering matrix theory of light emission from periodically structured media using a Green’s function approach. We computationally simulate the spectral power inside the structure, incorporating Purcell factor enhancements, and find internal waveguiding modes and plasmonic losses. We simulate the light-outcoupling factor η out and describe how corrugations and structured media can enhance η out . We have extended our framework to describe non-periodic disordered arrays as well as aperiodic quasi-crystalline arrays. Flat organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have low outcoupling with η out ~20% since most of the light is trapped in waveguided modes in higher index layers or lost to plasmonic excitations at the metal cathode. Periodically corrugated OLEDs can achieve highly enhanced η out ~65%-70% for pitch values between 1000 and 2000 nm, representing an enhancement factor >3 over planar structures. Periodic corrugations strongly diffract trapped waveguided and plasmonic modes to the emissive air cone. Disordered templates also can cause significant enhanced outcoupling with η out ~50%-55% for smaller nearest-neighbor separations of 300–400 nm. Quasi-crystalline tilings can also lead to enhancements of η out ~50%-55%. This framework can be utilized to design novel structured media that can generate high light extraction.

Compressed baryon acoustic oscillation analysis is robust to modified-gravity models

Abstract We study the robustness of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) analysis to the underlying cosmological model. We focus on testing the standard BAO analysis that relies on the use of a template. These templates are constructed assuming a fixed fiducial cosmological model and used to extract the location of the acoustic peaks. Such “compressed analysis” had been shown to be unbiased when applied to the ΛCDM model and some of its extensions. However, it has not been known whether this type of analysis introduces biases in a wider range of cosmological models where the template may not fully capture relevant features in the BAO signal. In this study, we apply the compressed analysis to noiseless mock power spectra that are based on Horndeski models, a broad class of modified-gravity theories specified with eight additional free parameters. We study the precision and accuracy of the BAO peak-location extraction assuming DESI, DESI II, and MegaMapper survey specifications. We find that the bias in the extracted peak locations is negligible; for example, it is less than 10% of the statistical error for even the proposed future MegaMapper survey. Our findings indicate that the compressed BAO analysis is remarkably robust to the underlying cosmological model.

Plasmon-Induced Hot-Carrier Excited-State Dynamics in Plasmonic Semiconductor Nanocrystals

The variance of carrier relaxation pathways for WO 3–x plasmonic semiconductor nanocrystals (PSNCs) is monitored by transient absorption spectroscopy following excitation of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) versus the optical band gap (E g,opt ). Excitation of the LSPR leads to efficient hot carrier population above the Fermi level in WO 3–x via Landau damping, in analogy to noble metal LSPR relaxation mechanisms. Hot carrier depopulation occurs on the femtosecond timescale, observed as the concomitant recovery of an LSPR bleach with the appearance of discrete interband and intraband photoinduced absorption features. Further, by comparison, the direct excitation of E g,opt results in trion recombination at donor–acceptor sites within the WO 3–x NC, consistent with exciton decay dynamics observed for typical wide-band-gap semiconductor NCs. From the analysis of pump power dependency data, a hot-carrier electron–phonon coupling constant of 1.47 × 10 11 J K –1 s –1 cm –3 is extracted. The direct comparison of the decay dynamics following E g,opt versus LSPR excitation confirms that the observed plasmon in trioctylphosphine oxide passivated, spherical WO 3–x is a resonance state in which hot carriers are generated only from excitation on resonance with the LSPR frequency. This study on WO 3–x PSNCs provides a toolset that can be used to evaluate the role of hot carriers following LSPR excitation of n-type, plasmonic transparent conducting oxide NCs, where enhancement of photocatalysis, photovoltaic performance, and optical enhancement has been reported.

Dean vortex-enhanced blood plasma separation in self-driven spiral microchannel flow with cross-flow microfilters

Point-of-care (POC) diagnostic devices have been developing rapidly in recent years, but they are mainly using saliva instead of blood as a test sample. A highly efficient self-separation during the self-driven flow without power systems is desired for expanding the point-of-care diagnostic devices. Microfiltration stands out as a promising technique for blood plasma separation but faces limitations due to blood cell clogging, resulting in reduced separation speed and efficiency. These limitations are mainly caused by the high viscosity and hematocrit in the blood flow. A small increment in the hematocrit of the blood significantly increases the pressure needed for the blood plasma separation in the micro-filters and decreases the separation speed and efficiency. Addressing this challenge, this study explores the feasibility of diluting whole blood within a microfluidic device without external power systems. This study implemented a spiral microchannel utilizing the inertial focusing and Dean vortex effects to focus the red blood cells and extract the blood with lower hematocrit. The inertial migration of the particles during the capillary flow was first investigated experimentally; a maximum of 88% of the particles migrated to the bottom and top equilibrium positions in the optimized 350 × 60 μm (cross-sectional area, 5.8 aspect ratio) microchannel. With the optimized dimension of the microchannel, the whole blood samples within the physiological hematocrit range were tested in the experiments, and more than 10% of the hematocrit reduction was compared between the outer branch outlet and inner branch outlet in the 350 × 60 μm microchannel.

Co-expression networks in Chlamydomonas reveal significant rhythmicity in batch cultures and empower gene function discovery

The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a choice reference system for the study of photosynthesis and chloroplast metabolism, cilium assembly and function, lipid and starch metabolism, and metal homeostasis. Despite decades of research, the functions of thousands of genes remain largely unknown, and new approaches are needed to categorically assign genes to cellular pathways. Growing collections of transcriptome and proteome data now allow a systematic approach based on integrative co-expression analysis. We used a dataset comprising 518 deep transcriptome samples derived from 58 independent experiments to identify potential co-expression relationships between genes. We visualized co-expression potential with the R package corrplot, to easily assess co-expression and anti-correlation between genes. We extracted several hundred high-confidence genes at the intersection of multiple curated lists involved in cilia, cell division, and photosynthesis, illustrating the power of our method. Surprisingly, Chlamydomonas experiments retained a significant rhythmic component across the transcriptome, suggesting an underappreciated variable during sample collection, even in samples collected in constant light. Our results therefore document substantial residual synchronization in batch cultures, contrary to assumptions of asynchrony. We provide step-by-step protocols for the analysis of co-expression across transcriptome data sets from Chlamydomonas and other species to help foster gene function discovery.

Binary pseudo-random array standard for extreme ultraviolet lithography tool characterization

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) imaging tools play a crucial role in EUV lithography. Achieving high accuracy in EUV metrology is essential for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. A thorough characterization of the instrumentation in use is required. Binary pseudo-random arrays (BPRAs) are an established standard for calibrating and characterizing optical instruments in the frequency domain. Here, we expand the BPRA standard to applications in EUV imaging. To extend the technology to the EUV spectral range, a high-resolution BPRA target with the smallest feature size of 40 nm is developed. The EUV BPRA target establishes an in situ and portable calibration and alignment standard for EUV imaging. The target is patterned by means of electron-beam lithography, using a nickel absorber with a thickness of 39 nm. The substrate is a 4″ silicon wafer with a molybdenum/silicon multilayer coating. To demonstrate the efficacy of the target and develop the instrument calibration protocol, the target is imaged on the Sharp Hyper-NA Actinic Reticle Review Project EUV mask microscope. Power spectral density (PSD) data are presented. The characteristics of the imaging system are imprinted on the PSD. The modulation transfer function is extracted from the PSD data. A partially coherent imaging model is used as a reference to the experimental results.

Simultaneous iterations algorithm for general eigenvalue problems on parallel processors

The method of simultaneous iteration with shift is extended to extraction of m-eigenpairs of a general eigenvalue problem of large order n in a parallel processing environment. The algorithm combines the power method and the Jacobi technique, and reduces to performing four basic operations. Parallel implementation of the algorithm is discussed in detail. The analysis accounts for computation and communication costs, and utilizes a parallel processing architecture of the ensemble type. Expressions for the computational efficiency and speedup are defined as a function of the problem and hardware parameters. Selected representative problems exhibit efficiencies ranging from 60 to 98 percent.

Gravity Effects in Two-Phase Microgap Flow

The high power density of emerging electronic devices is driving the transition from remote cooling, which relies on conduction and spreading, to embedded cooling, which extracts dissipated heat on-site. Two-phase microgap coolers employ the forced flow of dielectric fluids undergoing phase change in a heated channel within or between devices. Such coolers must work reliably in all orientations for a variety of applications (e.g., vehicle-based equipment), as well as in microgravity and high-g for aerospace applications, but the lack of acceptable models and correlations for orientation- and gravity-independent operation has limited their use. Reliable criteria for achieving orientation- and gravity-independent flow boiling would enable emerging systems to exploit this thermal management technique and streamline the technology development process. As a first step toward understanding the effect of gravity in two-phase microgap flow and transport, in an earlier effort, the authors studied the effects of evaporator orientation, mass flux, and heat flux on flow boiling of HFE7100 in a 1.01 mm tall by 13.0 mm wide by 12.7 mm long microgap channel. Orientation-independence, defined as achieving similar critical heat fluxes, heat transfer coefficients, and flow regimes across orientations, was achieved for mass fluxes of 400 kg/sq.m-s and greater (corresponding to a Froude number of about 0.8). In the present effort, the authors have studied the effects of gravity, mass flux, and subcooling on flow boiling of HFE7100 in a 0.17 mm tall by 13.0 mm wide by 12.7 mm long microgap channel. The Flow Boiling in Microgap Coolers payload experienced about three minutes of weightlessness and shorter periods of high-g (up to about 5 g) during two recent flights aboard the Blue Origin New Shepard reusable launch vehicle. The results from the flight experiments will be presented and compared with published criteria for achieving gravity-independence.

Scaling high-energy pulsed solid-state lasers to high average power

Techniques are provided for scaling the average power of high-energy solid-state lasers to high values of average output power while maintaining high efficiency. An exemplary technique combines a gas-cooled-slab amplifier architecture with a pattern of amplifier pumping and extraction in which pumping is continuous and in which only a small fraction of the energy stored in the amplifier is extracted on any one pulse. Efficient operation is achieved by propagating many pulses through the amplifier during each period equal to the fluorescence decay time of the gain medium, so that the preponderance of the energy cycled through the upper laser level decays through extraction by the amplified pulses rather than through fluorescence decay.

Imaging the Future Threats of the Sand Dunes Along the Northwestern Coast of Nile Delta Using SAR

Although the Sand dunes screen the coastal cities from the sand dunes hazards and their infrastructures from rising sea levels and storms, they might threaten and hide the surrounding developmental projects. Thus, imaging these coastal dunes' internal anatomy and dynamics are crucial to protect the environment. In this study, the Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images were processed and integrated with field observations and surveys to extract information about the past, current, and future behavior of coastal dunes in the Nile Delta-Northwest sector. A conventional change detection method using the supervised Landsat-8 images for the years 2015 and 2017 were generated to show a rapid change in the sand dune cover, where the high-resolution images of Google Earth were used to digitize the dune crests and measure its encroachment rate, which has been reached about 4 m/year with the NW–SE direction. The full-polarimetric ALOS/PALSAR-2 images from the years 2015 and 2017 show very low coherence for the sand dunes, which means these dunes are dynamic, where the changes in both power and phase imbalances of different dune fields during the investigated years (2015 and 2017) show high differences in values, which reached 40 dB and 0.06°, respectively. Finally, the extracted radar facies from the field survey show two successive groups of coastal sand dunes show a decline in the heavy minerals content to a level that might threaten the properties at the shoreline due to sea level rise and wave storms if mitigation actions are not taken place soon.

Electrically Powered High-Salinity Brine Separation Using Dimethyl Ether

Dewatering highly saline aqueous streams, from mining and geothermal leachates to industrial wastewater, is essential for effective resource recovery and safe disposal. Membraneless water extraction (MWE) uses a low-polarity solvent to separate water from concentrated aqueous solutions. In this study, we design a new MWE that uses dimethyl ether (DME) to selectively extract water from high-salinity brines, leveraging the volatility of DME to achieve rapid solvent recovery. By separating water and dissolved salts at a liquid–liquid interface, MWE minimizes the deleterious effects of scaling on vulnerable membrane and heat exchanger surfaces, reducing the need for extensive pretreatment and expensive materials. We begin by developing a computational framework for a multistage counterflow liquid–liquid contactor, which extracts water into DME, coupled with a multistage solvent regenerator that uses vapor compression to efficiently separate the desalinated water from the DME extractant. Excess Gibbs free energy and equation of state frameworks are used to model fluid phase equilibria in water–DME–sodium chloride (NaCl) mixtures, with interaction parameters estimated from experimental data. Incorporating equilibrium calculations into a system-scale computational model, we examine the performance of MWE using DME for the first time. Our analysis demonstrates that MWE can concentrate seawater desalination brine (>1.0 mol NaCl kg –1 ) to zero-liquid discharge salinities, with an energy consumption of under 50 kW h per m 3 of water extracted with a solvent recovery ratio greater than 99.9%. We highlight the importance of staging the vapor compression process to simultaneously minimize energy consumption while enabling brine concentration and product water solvent contamination. Finally, the thermodynamic framework developed here allows for the robust evaluation of new MWE solvents and systems for critical brine concentration and fractional precipitation applications.

Fisher for complements: extracting cosmology and neutrino mass from the counts-in-cells PDF

In this work, we comprehensively analyse the cosmology dependence of counts-in-cells statistics. Furthermore, we focus on the shape of the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of the matter density field at mildly non-linear scales. Based on large-deviation statistics, we parametrize the cosmology dependence of the matter PDF in terms of the linear power spectrum, the growth factor, the spherical collapse dynamics, and the non-linear variance. We extend our formalism to include massive neutrinos, finding that the total matter PDF is highly sensitive to the total neutrino mass Mν and can disentangle it from the clustering amplitude σ 8 . Additionally, using more than a million PDFs extracted from the Quijote simulations, we determine the response of the matter PDF to changing parameters in the νΛCDM model and successfully cross-validate the theoretical model and the simulation measurements. We present the first νΛCDM Fisher forecast for the matter PDF at multiple scales and redshifts, and its combination with the matter power spectrum. We establish that the matter PDF and the matter power spectrum are highly complementary at mildly non-linear scales. The matter PDF is particularly powerful for constraining the matter density Ωm, clustering amplitude σ 8 and the total neutrino mass Mν. Adding the mildly non-linear matter PDF to the mildly non-linear matter power spectrum improves constraints on Ω m by a factor of 5 and σ 8 by a factor of 2 when considering the three lowest redshifts. In our joint analysis of the matter PDF and matter power spectrum at three redshifts, the total neutrino mass is constrained to better than 0.01 eV with a total volume of 6 (Gpc h -1 ) 3 . We discuss how density-split statistics can be used to translate those encouraging results for the matter PDF into realistic observables in galaxy surveys.
