Microwave frequency standards based on room temperature (sup 199)Hg(sup +) ions in a Linear Ion Trap (LITS) presently achieve a Signal to Noise and line Q inferred short frequency stability. Long term stability has been measured for averaging intervals up to 5 months with apparent sensitivity to variations in ion number/temperature limiting the flicker floor.

Astrometric VLBI observations of radio stars are being made to connect the Hipparcos star catalog to the extragalactic radio reference frame. Typically, the antennas are moved between a star and a strong, compact reference source a few degrees away every 2-3 minutes. After correlation, the strong reference source fringes are used to determine the exact delay and rate of the weak radio star fringes, allowing the visibilities to be measured and coherently integrated for the duration of the experiment. As a result accurate astrometry has been possible on radio stars with flux densities as low as 2 mJy...
A review of the current status of very long baseline interferometry in the Deep Space Network.
The precision of astrometric VLBI measurements of radio-emitting stars has improved significantly during the past several years. For some stars whose radio flux density is only a few mJy the formal error and epoch-to-epoch scatter in position is approximately 200 - 600 micro-arcsec. The intrinsic signal/noise ratio in the data should allow a further order of magnitude improvement in astrometric precision as sources of systematic error are better understood and corrected. Wider bandwidth VLBI data recording systems currently under development will allow precisions of approximately 3 microarcsec if the measurements are limited by thermal noise. At this level planets with mass greater than or equal to 0.1 x M_(JUPITER) could be detected for the nearest radio-emitting stars.
CloudSat is a proposed space mission to measure the vertical strucure of clouds. Current spaceborne observational systems only characterize the uppermost cloud layer.
It has been predicted that the heat capacity of superfluid (sup 4)He will diverge strongly at a depressed transition temperature in the presence of a constarant heat current, Q.

This paper describes the revolutionary new science enabled by onboard autonomy as well as impact on extended missions such as the Mars Exploration Rovers and Mars Odyssey as well as future missions in development.
A top-level architectural approach facilitates the provision of communications and navigation support services to the anticipated lunar mission set. Following the time-honored principles of systems architecting, i.e., form follows function, the first step is to define the functions or services to be provided, both in terms of character and degree. These will include communication as well as trackin and navigation services.
This talk will present an overview of the current technologies that are available for implementing local oscillator sources for 1-3 THz applications. Progress to date on specific components will be discussed in some detail. Outstanding issues and concerns regarding practical implementation of these new technologies will also be discussed.
