Chiral Dirac Fermion in a Collinear Antiferromagnet

In a Dirac semimetal, the massless Dirac fermion has zero chirality, leading to surface states connected adiabatically to a topologically trivial surface state as well as vanishing anomalous Hall effect. Recently, it is predicted that in the nonrelativistic limit of certain collinear antiferromagnets, there exists a type of chiral "Dirac-like" fermion, whose dispersion manifests four-fold degenerate crossing points formed by spin-degenerate linear bands, with topologically protected Fermi arcs. Such an unconventional chiral fermion, protected by a hidden SU(2) symmetry in the hierarchy of an enhanced crystallographic group, namely spin space group, is not experimentally verified yet. Here, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we reveal the surface origin of the electron pocket at the Fermi surface in collinear antiferromagnet CoNb 3 S 6 . Combining with neutron diffraction and first-principles calculations, we suggest a multidomain collinear antiferromagnetic configuration, rendering the the existence of the Fermi-arc surface states induced by chiral Dirac-like fermions. Finally, our work provides spectral evidence of the chiral Dirac-like fermion caused by particular spin symmetry in CoNb 3 S 6 , paving an avenue for exploring new emergent phenomena in antiferromagnets with unconventional quasiparticle excitations.

Spinteract: a program to refine magnetic interactions to diffuse scattering data

Magnetic diffuse scattering—the broad magnetic scattering features observed in neutron-diffraction data above a material's magnetic ordering temperature—provides a rich source of information about the material's magnetic Hamiltonian. However, this information has often remained under-utilised due to a lack of available computer software that can fit values of magnetic interaction parameters to such data. Here, an open-source computer program, Spinteract, is presented, which enables straightforward refinement of magnetic interaction parameters to powder and single-crystal magnetic diffuse scattering data. Here, the theory and implementation of this approach are summarised. Examples are presented of refinements to published experimental diffuse-scattering data sets for the canonical antiferromagnet MnO and the highly-frustrated classical spin liquid Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 . Guidelines for data collection and refinement are outlined, and possible developments of the approach are discussed.

Dome-like pressure-temperature phase diagram of the cooperative Jahn–Teller distortion in NaNiO 2

NaNiO 2 is a Ni 3+ -containing layered material consisting of alternating triangular networks of Ni and Na cations, separated by octahedrally-coordinated O anions. At ambient pressure, it features a collinear Jahn–Teller distortion below $T^{JT}_{onset} ≈ 480$ K, which disappears in a first-order transition on heating to $T^{JT}_{onset} ≈ 500$ K, corresponding to the increase in symmetry from monoclinic to rhombohedral. It was previously studied by variable-pressure neutron diffraction (Nagle-Cocco et al 2022 ACS Inorg. Chem. 61 4312) and found to exhibit an increasing $T^{JT}_{onset}$ with pressure up to ∼5 GPa. In this work, powdered NaNiO 2 was studied via variable-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction up to pressures of ∼67 GPa at 294 K and 403 K. Suppression of the collinear Jahn–Teller ordering is observed via the emergence of a high-symmetry rhombohedral phase, with the onset pressure occurring at ∼18 GPa at both studied temperatures. Further, a discontinuous decrease in unit cell volume is observed on transitioning from the monoclinic to the rhombohedral phase. These results taken together suggest that in the vicinity of the transition, application of pressure causes the Jahn–Teller transition temperature, $T^{JT}_{onset}$, to decrease rapidly. We conclude that the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the cooperative Jahn–Teller distortion in NaNiO 2 is dome-like.

Determining the anisotropy and exchange parameters of polycrystalline spin-1 magnets

Abstract Although low-dimensional S = 1 antiferromagnets remain of great interest, difficulty in obtaining high-quality single crystals of the newest materials hinders experimental research in this area. Polycrystalline samples are more readily produced, but there are inherent problems in extracting the magnetic properties of anisotropic systems from powder data. Following a discussion of the effect of powder-averaging on various measurement techniques, we present a methodology to overcome this issue using thermodynamic measurements. In particular we focus on whether it is possible to characterise the magnetic properties of polycrystalline, anisotropic samples using readily available laboratory equipment. We test the efficacy of our method using the magnets [Ni(H 2 O) 2 (3,5-lutidine) 4 ](BF 4 ) 2 and Ni(H 2 O) 2 (acetate) 2 (4-picoline) 2 , which have negligible exchange interactions, as well as the antiferromagnet [Ni(H 2 O) 2 (pyrazine) 2 ](BF 4 ) 2 , and show that we are able to extract the anisotropy parameters in each case. The results obtained from the thermodynamic measurements are checked against electron-spin resonance and neutron diffraction. We also present a density functional method, which incorporates spin–orbit coupling to estimate the size of the anisotropy in [Ni(H 2 O) 2 (pyrazine) 2 ](BF 4 ) 2 .

Magnetism and magnetoelastic effect in the two-dimensional van der Waals multiferroic CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6

Here, we report a magnetic and neutron diffraction study on the ground state magnetism and field evolution of single-crystal van der Waals multiferroic CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6 . The ordered moments align along the 𝑏 axis in the "𝐴-type" antiferromagnetic configuration with a spin-flop transition along the same direction. Field application along 𝑎 introduces a smooth transition to a fully polarized ferromagnetic state via in-plane spin rotation. These findings resolve the ambiguity of the ground state magnetization direction in CuCrP 2 ⁢S 6 and uncover its field responses, providing a firm basis for future magnetoelectric study. A magnetoelastic coupling effect connecting the interlayer spacing and the magnetic order was further revealed, highlighting the out-of-plane strain as an effective control knob for tuning magnetism both in this system and in related van der Waals magnets.

Observation of Unprecedented Fractional Magnetization Plateaus in a New Shastry-Sutherland Ising Compound

Geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, such as those based on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL), offer a rich playground for exploring unconventional magnetic states. The delicate balance between competing interactions in these systems leads to the emergence of novel phases. We present the characterization of Er 2 ⁢Be 2⁢ GeO 7 , an SSL compound with Er 3+ ions forming orthogonal dimers separated by nonmagnetic layers whose structure is invariant under the 𝑃⁢$\bar{4}21$⁢𝑚 space group. Neutron scattering reveals an antiferromagnetic dimer structure at zero field, typical of Ising spins on that lattice and consistent with the anisotropic magnetization observed. However, magnetization measurements exhibit fractional plateaus at 1/4 and 1/2 of saturation, in contrast to the expected 1/3 plateau of the SSL Ising model. By comparing the energy of candidate states with ground-state lower bounds we show that this behavior requires spatially anisotropic interactions, leading to an anisotropic Shastry-Sutherland Ising model symmetric under the 𝐶⁢𝑚⁢𝑚⁢2 space group. This anisotropy is consistent with the small orthorhombic distortion observed with single-crystal neutron diffraction. The other properties, including thermodynamics, which have been investigated theoretically using tensor networks, point to small residual interactions, potentially due to further couplings and quantum fluctuations. This study highlights Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢GeO 7 as a promising platform for investigating exotic magnetic phenomena.

Magnetic order and physical properties of the kagome metal UNb 6 ⁢Sn 6

The 𝑅⁢𝑀 6 ⁢𝑋 6 family of materials (𝑅 = rare-earth, 𝑀 = transition metal, 𝑋 = Ga, Si, Ge, Sn) produces an array of emergent phenomena, such as charge density waves, intrinsic Hall effects, and complex magnetic order, due to its kagome net of transition metal atoms, its local-moment magnetic anisotropies, and its extensive chemical tunability. Here, in this study, we report UNb 6⁢ Sn 6 , a new “166” material containing both an actinide and a 4⁢𝑑 transition metal, along with its nonmagnetic analog ThNb6⁢Sn6, to investigate the properties of a 5⁢𝑓−4⁢𝑑 electron 166 system. UNb 6 ⁢Sn 6 crystallizes in the hexagonal 𝑃⁢6/𝑚⁢𝑚⁢𝑚 space group with a small degree of disorder due to shifts in the size of the CoSn-like cages along the 𝑐 axis. Upon cooling at zero magnetic field, the material undergoes two magnetic phase transitions at 𝑇 2 = 46K and 𝑇 N = 43K. The low-temperature, zero-field phase is an antiferromagnet with ordered uranium moments and a k = (0,0,1/2) propagation vector determined by neutron diffraction. Remarkably, with a magnetic field applied along the 𝑐 axis, five additional magnetic transitions occur, evidenced by magnetization and resistivity data, before the moment saturates at 2.62 𝜇 B /U at 2 K and ≥ 13.6T. In two magnetic phase regions, the Hall resistivity of UNb 6⁢ Sn 6 significantly deviates from the magnetization, suggesting that the phases have a large Berry curvature or a change in the Fermi surface. The unknown magnetic ordering of the field-dependent phases of UNb 6⁢ Sn 6 demonstrates the complexity of the 5⁢𝑓−4⁢𝑑 166 system and encourages further study of its properties.

EuAuSb: An odd-parity helical variation of altermagnetism

EuAuSb is a triangular-lattice Dirac semimetal in which a topological Hall effect has been observed to develop in association with a magnetically ordered phase. Our single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements have identified an incommensurate helical order in which individual ferromagnetic Eu 2+ layers rotate in-plane by ∼ 120° from one layer to the next. An in-plane magnetic field distorts the incommensurate order, eventually leading to a first order transition to a state that is approximately commensurate and that is continuously polarized as the bulk magnetization approaches saturation. From an analysis of the magnetic diffraction intensities versus field, we find evidence for a dip in the ordered in-plane moment at the same field where the topological Hall effect is a maximum, and we propose that this is due to field-induced quantum spin fluctuations. Our electronic structure calculations yield exchange constants compatible with the helical order and show that the bands near the Fermi level lose their spin degeneracy via a mechanism similar to that in the collinear altermagnets. In conclusion, we find that, unlike the even symmetry seen in the altermagnets, the spin splitting in EuAuSb has odd-wave symmetry similar to that recently found in a number of coplanar magnetic materials.

Small Co-doping induced magnetic and electrical transitions in single crystal CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3

CaFe⁢O 3 and CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 single crystals were grown by combing floating-zone method with high oxygen pressure treatment. Both crystals show charge disproportionation of Fe (F⁡e 4+ → F⁡e 3+ + F⁡e 5+ ) accompanied by a metal-to-insulator transition as well as a crystal structural transformation from Pbnm to 𝑃⁢2 1 /𝑛. However, the slight introduction of Co significantly suppresses the critical temperature of charge disproportionation from 290 K in CaFe⁢O 3 to 260 K in CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 . Different from the single antiferromagnetic phase transition as observed in the polycrystalline CaFe⁢O 3 , two sequential antiferromagnetic transitions are found to occur in these two single crystals with the Néel temperatures around 119 and 112 K for CaFe⁢O 3 crystal and 109 and 98 K for CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 crystal, respectively. Neutron diffraction illustrates the formation of a spiral antiferromagnetic structure. Moreover, as the temperature further decreases to 65 K, a third magnetic transition accompanied by a second electrical transition is observed in the slightly Co-doped CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 crystal. In conclusion, first-principles calculations suggest that the introduction of a moderate amount of Co and the peculiar spiral spin texture play an important role in the presence of such new magnetic and electrical transitions.

Antiferromagnetic stacking of ferromagnetic layers and doping-controlled phase competition in Ca 1 - x Sr x Co 2 - y As 2

In search of a quantum phase transition between the two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism of Ca 1 - x Sr x Co 2 - y As 2 and stripe-type antiferromagnetism in SrCo2As 2 , we instead discover evidence for 1D magnetic frustration between magnetic square Co layers. We present neutron-diffraction data for Ca 1 - x Sr x Co 2 - y As 2 that reveal a sequence of $x$-dependent magnetic transitions which involve different stacking of 2D ferromagnetically aligned layers with different magnetic anisotropy. We report on the $x$-dependent changes to the magnetic order by utilizing classical analytical calculations of a 1D Heisenberg model where single-ion magnetic anisotropy and frustration of antiferromagnetic nearest- and next-nearest-layer exchange interactions are all composition dependent.

Magnetic properties of the low-dimensional Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 system ( M = Cu , Co , Mn )

Here, we explored the magnetic properties of the low-dimensional Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 (M = Cu, Co, and Mn) system using both experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. Magnetization, specific heat, and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements have been performed on single crystal Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 . The spin structure was determined and a magnetic phase diagram with applied field along the b axis was constructed, which contains a spin flop transition around 6 T. Magnetization and specific heat measurements confirmed the presence of weak ferromagnetism in Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 . Furthermore, we performed local-spin density approximation with on-site Coulomb energy (LSDA+U) calculations for the Ba M 2 Si 2 O 7 (M = Cu, Co, and Mn) system. Due to the first-principles calculations, the origin of the magnetic differences of the three materials is discussed.

Magnetic correlations and structure in bixbyite across the spin-glass transition

Magnetic frustration in atomically ordered crystals gives rise to a broad range of quantum phenomena. The mineral bixbyite, F e 2 - x M n x O 3 , has magnetic frustration induced by atomic disorder. The end-members M n 2 O 3 and β - F e 2 O 3 both have magnetically ordered ground states, but the bixbyite crystal studied here, with a composition F e 1.12 M n 0.88 O 3 , instead undergoes a spin-glass-like transition near 32 K. Here, the magnetic correlations and atomic structure of bixbyite are followed across the spin-glass transition using powder and single-crystal neutron scattering. Refinement of Bragg intensities from neutron diffraction data allows precise determination of the average Fe and Mn concentration on the different crystallographic sites of the structure. No structural transitions occur in bixbyite upon cooling. Using the three-dimensional magnetic difference pair distribution function (3D-mΔPDF), the magnetic correlations are resolved spatially and their temperature dependence determined. The results demonstrate that the spin-spin correlations are strong well above the glass transition temperature, consistent with the spin-glass nature of the magnetism in bixbyite.

Helical magnetic ordering in Sr ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 As 2

SrCo 2 As 2 is a peculiar itinerant magnetic system that does not order magnetically, but inelastic neutron-scattering experiments observe the same stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations found in many of the Fe-based superconductors along with evidence of magnetic frustration. Here we present results from neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals of Sr(Co 1-x Ni x ) 2 As 2 that show the development of long-range AF order with Ni doping. However, the AF order is not stripe type. Rather, the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetically aligned (FM) layers (with moments laying in the layer) that are AF arranged along c with an incommensurate propagation vector of (0 0 τ), i.e., a helix. Using high-energy x-ray diffraction, we find no evidence for a temperature-induced structural phase transition that would indicate a collinear AF order. This finding supports a picture of competing FM and AF interactions within the square transition-metal layers due to flat-band magnetic instabilities. However, the composition dependence of the propagation vector suggests that far more subtle Fermi surface and orbital effects control the interlayer magnetic correlations.

Lattice distortion in the spin-orbital entangled state in RVO 3 perovskites

In this paper, we report a thorough study of Y 0.7 La 0.3 VO 3 single crystals by measuring magnetic properties, specific heat, thermal conductivity, Raman scattering, x-ray and neutron diffraction with the motivation of revealing the lattice response to the spin-orbital entanglement in RVO3. Upon cooling from room temperature, the orbitally disordered paramagnetic state changes around T*~220 K to a spin-orbital entangled state which is then followed by a transition at TN = 116 K to C-type orbital-ordered (OO) and G-type antiferromagnetic ordered (AF) ground state. In the temperature interval TN 6/2 octahedra have two comparable in-plane V-O bonds which are longer than the out-of-plane V-O1 bond. This octahedral site distortion supports the spin-orbital entanglement of partially filled and degenerate yz/zx orbitals. However, this distortion is incompatible with the steric octahedral site distortion intrinsic to orthorhombic perovskites. Their competition induces a second-order transition from the spin-orbital entangled state to a C-OO/G-AF ground state where the long-range OO suppresses the spin-orbital entanglement. Our analysis suggests that the spin-orbital entangled state and G-OO are comparable in energy and compete with each other. Rare-earth site disorder favors the spin-orbital entanglement rather than a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion. The results also indicate for LaVO 3 a C-OO/G-AF state in T t ≤ T ≤TN and an orbital flipping transition at T t .

Magnetic asymmetry induced anomalous spin-orbit torque in IrMn

We demonstrate an anomalous spin-orbit torque induced by the broken magnetic symmetry in the antiferromagnet IrMn. We study the magnetic structure of three phases of IrMn thin films using neutron diffraction technique. The magnetic mirror symmetry M ' is broken laterally in both L 1 0 - IrMn and L 1 2 - IrM n 3 but not γ - IrM n 3 . We observe an out-of-plane dampinglike spin-orbit torque in both L 1 0 - IrMn /permalloy and L 1 2 - IrM n 3 /permalloy bilayers but not in γ - IrM n 3 /permalloy. This is consistent with both the symmetry analysis on the effects of a broken M ' on spin-orbit torque and the theoretical predictions of the spin Hall effect and the Rashba-Edelstein effect. In addition, the measured spin-orbit torque efficiencies are 0.61 ± 0.01, 1.01 ± 0.03, and 0.80 ± 0.01 for the L 1 0 , L 1 2 , and γ phases, respectively. Our work highlights the critical roles of the magnetic asymmetry in spin-orbit torque generation.

Evidence for pseudo–Jahn-Teller distortions in the charge density wave phase of 1$\textit{T}-\text{TiSe}_2$

Here, the charge density wave (CDW) instability in 1$\textit{T}-\text{TiSe}_2$ is revisited to investigate its electronic and structural origins using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), neutron diffraction, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The evidence for Jahn-Teller (JT)-like distortions in the CDW state is provided from the local structure analysis that shows splitting of the Ti-Se bonds into short and long. The magnitude of the split is inconsistent with the commonly accepted Di Salvo model for the structural distortions in the CDW phase. From the APRES data, it is deduced that a nontrivial temperature-dependent energy shift of the Se $4\textit{p}$ valence bands occurs, but is absent for the Ti $3\textit{d}$ conduction bands. Collectively, these observations suggest that a JT-like mechanism is most likely central to the CDW instability in 1$\textit{T}-\text{TiSe}_2$.

Coupling of fully symmetric As phonon to magnetism in Ba(Fe 1-x Au x ) 2 As 2

In this work, we study the coupling of the fully symmetric vibration mode of arsenic atoms to magnetism in a Ba ( Fe 1 - x Au x ) 2 As 2 system by polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy and neutron diffraction. In this system, there are two phase transitions: a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition at temperature T S and a magnetic phase transition into collinear spin-density wave (SDW) state at temperature T N ( ≤ T S ). T S and T N almost coincide in the pristine compound, whereas they differ by as much as 8 K for compounds with dilute gold substitution for iron. Raman coupling to the A g (As) phonon is forbidden for the X Y scattering geometry in the tetragonal phase above T S , whereas it becomes allowed in the orthorhombic phase below T S : The emerging mode's intensity indicates the lattice orthorhombicity. Furthermore, we find that upon cooling below T S , first, weak A g (As) phonon mode intensity appears in the X Y scattering geometry spectra; however, the mode's intensity is significantly enhanced in the magnetic phase below T N . The A g (As) phonon also shows an asymmetric line shape below T N and an anomalous linewidth broadening upon Au doping. We describe the anomalous behavior of the A g (As) mode in the X Y scattering geometry using a Fano model involving the A g (As) phonon interacting with the B 2 g ( D 4 h )-symmetry-like electron-hole continuum. We conclude that the temperature dependence of light coupling amplitude to the A g (As) phonon follows the evolution of the magnetic order parameter M ( T ) . We propose that the intensity enhancement of the A g (As) phonon in the X Y scattering geometry below T N is due to electronic anisotropy induced by the collinear SDW order parameter.

Controlling magnetic order, magnetic anisotropy, and band topology in the semimetals Sr(Mn 0.9 Cu 0.1 )Sb 2 and Sr(Mn 0.9 Zn 0.1 )Sb 2

Neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies show that orthorhombic single-crystals of topological semimetals Sr(Mn 0.9 Cu 0.1 ) Sb 2 and Sr(Mn 0.9 Zn 0.1 )Sb 2 undergo three-dimensional C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Mn 2+ moments at T N = 200 ± 10 and 210 ± 12 K, respectively, significantly lower than that of the parent SrMnSb 2 with T N = 297 ± 3 K. Magnetization versus applied magnetic field (perpendicular to MnSb planes) below T N exhibits slightly modified de Haas van Alphen oscillations for the Zn-doped crystal as compared to that of the parent compound. By contrast, the Cu-doped system does not show de Haas van Alphen magnetic oscillations, suggesting that either Cu substitution for Mn changes the electronic structure of the parent compound substantially, or that the Cu sites are strong scatterers of carriers that significantly shorten their mean free path thus diminishing the oscillations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations including spin-orbit coupling predict the C-type AFM state for the parent, Cu-, and Zn-doped systems and identify the a -axis (i.e., perpendicular to the Mn layer) as the easy magnetization direction in the parent and 12.5% of Cu or Zn substitutions. In contrast, 25% of Cu content changes the easy magnetization to the b-axis (i.e., within the Mn layer). Here, we find that the incorporation of Cu and Zn in SrMnSb 2 tunes electronic bands near the Fermi level resulting in different band topology and semimetallicity. The parent and Zn-doped systems have coexistence of electron and hole pockets with opened Dirac cone around the Y-point whereas the Cu-doped system has dominant hole pockets around the Fermi level with a distorted Dirac cone. The tunable electronic structure may point out possibilities of rationalizing the experimentally observed de Haas van Alphen magnetic oscillations.
