Extracting spinon self-energies from two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy

Two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) is a nonlinear spectroscopy technique capable of identifying whether apparent continua in linear response are made out of multiplets of sharp deconfined quasiparticles. This makes it a potent tool for experimental identification of fractionalized phases. Previous discussions have focused on limits where the quasiparticles in question are infinitely long lived. In this paper we discuss 2DCS in the regime where the fractionalized quasiparticles can themselves decay. We introduce a powerful path-integral-based approach, whereby the computation of nonlinear susceptibilities reduces to an efficient exercise in diagrammatic perturbation theory. Here, we apply this method to compute the 2DCS response of the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model, in the presence of integrability-breaking perturbations. We discuss aspects of the self-energy of the fractionalized quasiparticles that may be extracted via 2DCS, such as the momentum-dependent decay rate.

Multi-$\mathcal{k}$ magnetic structure and large anomalous Hall effect in candidate magnetic Weyl semimetal NdAlGe

Here, the magnetic structure, magnetoresistance (MR), and Hall effect of the noncentrosymmetric magnetic semimetal NdAlGe are investigated, revealing an unusual magnetic state and anomalous transport properties that are associated with the electronic structure of this compound. The magnetization and MR measurements are both highly anisotropic and indicate an Ising-like magnetic system. The magnetic structure is complex in that it involves two magnetic ordering vectors, including an incommensurate spin density wave and commensurate ferrimagnetic state in zero field. We have discovered a large anomalous Hall conductivity that reaches ≈430 Ω –1 cm –1 , implying that it originates from an intrinsic Berry curvature effect stemming from Weyl nodes found in the electronic structure. These electronic structure calculations indicate the presence of nested Fermi surface pockets with nesting wave vectors like the measured magnetic ordering wave vector and the presence of Weyl nodes in proximity to the Fermi surface. We associate the incommensurate magnetic structure with the large anomalous Hall response to be the result of the combination of Fermi surface nesting and the Berry curvature associated with Weyl nodes.

Two-dimensional isometric tensor networks on an infinite strip

The exact contraction of a generic two-dimensional (2D) tensor network state (TNS) is known to be exponentially hard, making simulation of 2D systems difficult. The recently introduced class of isometric TNS (isoTNS) represents a subset of TNS that allows for efficient simulation of such systems on finite square lattices. The isoTNS ansatz requires the identification of an “orthogonality column” of tensors, within which one-dimensional matrix product state (MPS) methods can be used for calculation of observables and optimization of tensors. Here we extend isoTNS to infinitely long strip geometries and introduce an infinite version of the Moses Move algorithm for moving the orthogonality column around the network. Using this algorithm, we iteratively transform an infinite MPS representation of a 2D quantum state into a strip isoTNS and investigate the entanglement properties of the resulting state. In addition, we demonstrate that the local observables can be evaluated efficiently. Lastly, we introduce an infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm (iTEBD 2 ) and use it to approximate the ground state of the 2D transverse field Ising model on lattices of infinite strip geometry.

Phonon softening and slowing-down of charge density wave fluctuations in BaNi 2 As 2

BaNi 2 As 2 is a nonmagnetic analog of the iron pnictide superconductors, and exhibits an incommensurate charge density wave (IC-CDW) and a sizable elastoresistance. Here, in this Letter, phonons in BaNi 2 As 2 associated with the IC-CDW and uniform in-plane lattice distortions are investigated using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. The in-plane transverse acoustic phonons reveal no softening at temperatures where the elastoresistance increases strongly, indicating the latter to be electronically driven. Systematic phonon measurements suggest the IC-CDW occurs in two stages upon cooling: Underdamped phonons first soften to zero energy well above the IC-CDW ordering temperature, then the resulting quasielastic IC-CDW fluctuations gradually slow down and coalesce into the static IC-CDW order. A possible origin for our observations is the IC-CDW in BaNi 2 As 2 being uniaxial, which provides an additional Ising degree of freedom favorable for disordered IC-CDW modulations, and accounts for the elastoresistance through a weak coupling to the lattice.

Spin and orbital metallic magnetism in rhombohedral trilayer graphene

We provide a theoretical interpretation of the metallic broken spin-valley (flavor) symmetry states recently discovered in hole-doped rhombohedral trilayer (ABC) graphene in large electric displacement fields. Our conclusions about the phase diagram and phase transitions combine insights from ABC graphene electronic structure models and mean-field theory, and are guided by the precise magneto-oscillation Fermi-surface-area measurements of recent experiments. We find that the principle of momentum-space condensation plays a key role in determining Fermi-surface reconstructions enabled by broken flavor symmetries when the single-particle bands imply thin annular Fermi seas. The reconstructed Fermi sea consists of one large outer Fermi-surface-enclosed majority-flavor states in reciprocal-space area A maj and one or more small inner holelike Fermi-surface-enclosed minority-flavor states in A min that are primarily responsible for nematic order. The competing ground states (valley-Ising, valley-XY, and spin-polarized state) have different A maj /A min and exchange energy maximizes this ratio and selects valley-XY nematic metal as the lowest-energy state. Here, we discuss how the nematic pockets explain the observed fractionalization of quantum oscillation frequencies, and propose anisotropic transport and the nonlinear Hall effect as additional observables.

Partial fillings of the bosonic $E$ 8 quantum Hall state

Here, we study bosonic topological phases constructed from electrons. In addition to a bulk excitation energy gap, these bosonic phases also have a fermion energy gap, below which all local excitations in the bulk and on the edge are even combinations of electrons. We focus on chiral phases, in which all low-energy edge excitations move in the same direction, that arise from the short-range entangled $E_8$ quantum Hall state, the bosonic analog of the filled lowest Landau level of electrons. The $E_8$ edge-state theory features an $E_8$ Kac-Moody symmetry that can be decomposed into ${\cal G}_A \times {\cal G}_B$ subalgebras, such as $SU(3) \times E_6$, $SO(M) \times SO(16-M)$, and $G_2 \times F_4$. (Here, $\{SO(M) \}$, $\{SU(N)\}$, and $\{E_8, G_2, F_4 \}$ denote orthogonal, unitary, and exceptional Lie algebras.) Using these symmetry decompositions, we construct exactly solvable coupled-wire model Hamiltonians for families of long-range entangled ${\cal G}_A$ or ${\cal G}_B$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall states that "partially fill" the $E_8$ state and are pairwise related by a generalized particle-hole symmetry. These long-range entangled states feature either Abelian or non-Abelian topological order. Some support the emergence of non-local Dirac and Majorana fermions, Ising anyons, metaplectic anyons, Fibonacci anyons, as well as deconfined $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fluxes and charges.

Refined spin-wave model and multimagnon bound states in Li 2 CuO 2

Here we report a study of the spin dynamics in the ferromagnetic chain compound Li 2 CuO 2 . Inelastic neutron scattering measurements allow for the spin Hamiltonian to be determined using a J 1 –J 2 XXZ-Heisenberg spin chain model with weak interchain interactions. The primary exchange parameters determined from our data are qualitatively consistent with those of Lorenz et al. [Europhys. Lett. 88, 37002 (2009)], and our data allow for the resolution of additional interchain exchange interactions. We also observe the formation of two- and, potentially, three-magnon bound states. The two-magnon bound state exists only in the magnetically ordered phase of this material, consistent with stabilization by the weak, Ising-like exchange anisotropy of the nearest-neighbor intrachain interaction. In contrast, the potential three-magnon state persists in a finite temperature regime above T N , indicating an unconventional character. Finally, our results establish Li 2 CuO 2 as an experimental platform for the study of exchange anisotropy-stabilized bound states in a ferromagnetic chain.

Scrambling and operator entanglement in local non-Hermitian quantum systems

The breakdown of Lieb-Robinson bounds in local, non-Hermitian quantum systems opens up the possibility for a rich landscape of quantum many-body phenomenology. We elucidate this by studying information scrambling and quantum chaos in non-Hermitian variants of paradigmatic local quantum spin-chain models. We utilize a mixture of exact diagonalization and tensor network techniques for our numerical results and focus on three dynamical quantities: (i) out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs), (ii) operator entanglement of the dynamics, and (iii) entanglement growth following a quench from product initial states. We show that while OTOCs fail to capture information scrambling in a simple, local, non-Hermitian transverse-field Ising model, the closely related operator entanglement is a robust measure of dynamical properties of interest. Moreover, we show that the short-time growth of operator entanglement can generically detect entanglement phase transitions in these systems while its long-time average is shown to be a reliable indicator of quantum chaos and entanglement phases. This allows us to extend operator entanglement-based diagnostics from previous works on closed and open quantum systems, to the new arena of monitored quantum dynamics. Finally, we remark on the efficacy of these dynamical quantities in detecting integrability/chaos in the presence of continuous monitoring.

Short-range magnetic correlations in quasicrystalline i -Tb-Cd

Here, we report on elastic and inelastic neutron scattering from single-grain isotopically enriched samples to elucidate the local magnetic correlations between Tb 3+ moments in quasicrystalline i -Tb-Cd. The inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the crystalline electric field excitations demonstrated that the Tb 3+ moments are directed primarily along the local fivefold axes of the Tsai-type cluster as was found for the TbCd 6 approximant phase. Based on the inelastic measurements, we consider a simple Ising-type model for the moment configurations on a single Tb 3+ icosahedron and enumerate the lowest energy moment configurations. We then calculate the diffuse scattering from these configurations and compare with the experimental magnetic diffuse scattering measurements to identify the most likely single cluster moment configurations and find reasonable agreement between the broad features observed in our scattering simulations. We further use a heuristic glass model as well as large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a multicluster model to consider the role of higher-order (longer-range) intercluster correlations for magnetic frustration and the magnetic scattering.

Slowly decaying zero mode in a weakly nonintegrable boundary impurity model

The transverse field Ising model (TFIM) on the half-infinite chain possesses an edge zero mode. This work considers an impurity model: TFIM perturbed by a boundary integrability-breaking interaction. For sufficiently large transverse field, but in the ordered phase of the TFIM, the zero mode is observed to decay. The decay is qualitatively different from zero modes where the integrability-breaking interactions are nonzero all along the chain. It is shown that for the impurity model, the zero mode decays by relaxing to a nonlocal quasiconserved operator, the latter being exactly conserved when the opposite edge of the chain has no noncommuting perturbations so as to ensure perfect degeneracy of the spectrum. In the thermodynamic limit, the quasiconserved operator vanishes, and a regime is identified where the decay of the zero mode obeys Fermi's golden rule. Furthermore, a toy model for the decay is constructed in Krylov space and it is highlighted how Fermi's golden rule may be recovered from this toy model.

Electronic nematic order in the normal state of strontium ruthenate

Despite significant achievements in characterizing the properties of Sr 2 ⁢RuO 4 over the last three decades, the precise nature of its electronic ground state is still unresolved. In this work, we provide a missing piece of the puzzle by uncovering evidence of electronic nematic order in the normal state of Sr 2 ⁢RuO 4 , revealed by ultrafast time-resolved optical dichroism measurements of uniaxially strained thin films. This nematic order, whose domains are aligned by the strain, spontaneously breaks the fourfold rotational symmetry of the crystal. The temperature dependence of the dichroism resembles an Ising-like order parameter, and optical pumping induces a coherent oscillation of its amplitude mode. The existence of electronic nematic order in the normal state of Sr2⁢RuO4 may have consequences for the form and mechanism of superconductivity in this material.

Quantitative investigation of the short-range magnetic correlations in the candidate quantum spin liquid NaYbO 2

Here, we present a neutron diffraction study of NaYbO 2 , a candidate quantum spin-liquid (QSL) compound hosting a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice of magnetic Yb 3+ ions. We observe diffuse magnetic scattering that persists to at least 20 K, demonstrating the presence of short-range magnetic correlations in this system up to a relatively high-energy scale. Using a reverse Monte Carlo and magnetic pair distribution function analysis, we confirm the predominant antiferromagnetic nature of these correlations and show that the diffuse scattering data can be well described by noninteracting layers of Heisenberg or XY spins on the triangular lattice. We rule out Ising spins and short-range-ordered stripe or 120° phases as candidate ground states of NaYbO 2 . These results are consistent with a possible QSL ground state in NaYbO 2 and showcase the benefit of a combined reciprocal- and real-space analysis of materials with short-range magnetic correlations.

Quantum phases in the honeycomb-lattice J 1 – J 3 ferro-antiferromagnetic model

The significant role of quantum effects in magnets with competing interactions remains at the forefront of condensed matter physics for over 50 years, inspiring a multitude of quests for exotic states, models that can realize them, and real materials that can host them. The elusive spin-liquid states with strong entanglement are but one example; others include valence-bond phases with spatial symmetry breaking, quantum spin nematics that are quantum analogues of liquid crystals, and an especially extensive class of unconventional magnetically ordered phases that do not appear in the classical solutions of the underlying spin models. It is the latter group of phenomena that creates a broader context for the research effort in the present work concerning the search for and an identification of the novel ground states of quantum magnets. In this work, we have studied one of the paradigmatic models in quantum magnetism that is also attracting a significant recent interest because it appears to be providing a tantalizingly close description for many of the newly synthesized materials. We demonstrated that the phase diagram of the quantum ferro-antiferromagnetic model on the honeycomb lattice differs dramatically from the classical one. It hosts the double-zigzag and Ising-z phases as unexpected intermediaries between ferromagnetic and zigzag states that are also extended beyond their classical regions of stability. In broad agreement with quantum order-by-disorder arguments, these collinear phases completely supersede the classical spiral state.

Adaptive variational ground state preparation for spin-1 models on qubit-based architectures

Here, we apply the adaptive variational quantum imaginary time evolution (AVQITE) method to prepare ground states of one-dimensional spin S = 1 models. We compare different spin-to-qubit encodings (standard binary, Gray, unary, and multiplet) with regard to the performance and quantum resource cost of the algorithm. Using state-vector simulations, we study two well-known spin-1 models: the Blume-Capel model of transverse-field Ising spins with single-ion anisotropy, and the XXZ model with single-ion anisotropy. We consider system sizes of up to 20 qubits, which corresponds to spin-1 chains up to length 10. We determine the dependence of the number of CNOT gates in the AVQITE state preparation circuit on the encoding, the initial state, and the choice of operator pool in the adaptive method. Independent of the choice of encoding, we find that the CNOT gate count scales cubically with the number of spins for the Blume-Capel model and quartically for the anisotropic XXZ model. However, the multiplet and Gray encodings present smaller prefactors in the scaling relations. These results provide useful insights for the implementation of AVQITE on quantum hardware.

Magnetism in the axion insulator candidate Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 is a member of a family of orthorhombic nonsymmorphic rare-earth intermetallics that combines large localized magnetic moments and itinerant exchange with a low carrier density and perpendicular glide planes. This may result in special topological crystalline (wallpaper fermion) or axion insulating phases. Recent studies of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals have revealed colossal negative magnetoresistance and multiple magnetic phase transitions. Here, we clarify this ordering process using neutron scattering, resonant elastic x-ray scattering, muon spin-rotation, and magnetometry. The nonsymmorphic and multisite character of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 results in coplanar noncollinear magnetic structures with an Ising-like net magnetization along the a axis. A reordering transition, attributable to competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings, manifests as the onset of a second commensurate Fourier component. In the absence of spatially resolved probes, the experimental evidence for this low-temperature state can be interpreted either as an unusual double- q structure or in a phase separation scenario. The net magnetization produces variable anisotropic hysteretic effects which also couple to charge transport. The implied potential for functional domain physics and topological transport suggests that this structural family may be a promising platform to implement concepts of topological antiferromagnetic spintronics. Antiferromagnetic order in the layered magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 ⁢Se 4 probed by resonant soft x-ray scattering

The quasi-two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Se 4 , stabilized via nonequilibrium molecular beam epitaxy, is investigated by resonant soft x-ray scattering. Kiessig fringes are observed, confirming a high sample quality and a thin film thickness of 10 septuple layers (∼13 nm). An antiferromagnetic Bragg peak is observed at the structurally forbidden reflection, whose magnetic nature is validated by studying its temperature, energy, and polarization dependence. Through a detailed analysis, an A-type antiferromagetic order with in-plane moments is implied. This alternative spin structure in MnBi 2 Se 4 , in contrast to the Ising antiferromagnetic states in other magnetic topological insulators, might be relevant for hosting new topological states.

Floquet product mode

Results are presented for the dynamics of edge modes in interacting Floquet Ising chains. It is shown that in addition to the quasistable 0 and π edge modes, a third long lived edge mode arising from the operator product of the 0 and π edge modes exists. Depending on the microscopic parameters, this Floquet product mode is shown to have a substantially longer lifetime than the individual 0 and π modes. This is triggered by a scattering process which converts a 0 mode into a π mode while scattering two bulk excitations. This process can lead to a rapid decay of both 0 and π mode without affecting the product mode.

False vacuum decay and nucleation dynamics in neutral atom systems

Metastable states of quantum many-body systems with confinement offer a means to simulate false vacuum phenomenology, including nonequilibrium dynamical processes like decay by nucleation, in truncated limits. Recent work has examined the decay process in one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic Ising spins and superfluids. Here, in this paper, we study nucleation dynamics in 1D antiferromagnetic neutral atom chains with Rydberg interactions, using both numerical simulations and analytic modeling. We apply a staggered local detuning field to generate the metastable and ground states. Our efforts focus on two dynamical regimes: decay and annealing. In the first, we corroborate the phenomenological decay rate scaling and determine the associated parameter range for the decay process; in the second, we uncover and elucidate a procedure to anneal the metastable state from the initial to the final system, with intermediate nucleation events. We further propose experimental protocols to prepare the required states and perform quenches on near-term neutral atom quantum simulators, examining the experimental feasibility of our proposed setup and parameter regime.
