Relating the radar backscattering coefficient to leaf-area index

The relationship between the radar backscattering coefficient of a vegetation canopy, sigma(0) sub can, and the canopy's leaf area index (LAI) is examined. The relationship is established through the development of a model for corn and sorghum and another for wheat. Both models are extensions of the cloud model of Attema and Ulaby (1978). Analysis of experimental data measured at 8.6, 13.0, 17.0, and 35.6 GHz indicates that most of the temporal variations of sigma(0) sub can can be accounted for through variations in green LAI alone, if the latter is greater than 0.5.

Catalog of infrared observations including: Bibliography of infrared astronomy and index of infrared source positions

The Catalog of Infrared Observations and its Far Infrared Supplement summarize all infrared astronomical observations at infrared wavelengths published in the scientific literature between 1965 and 1982. The Catalog includes as appendices the Bibliography of infrared astronomy which keys observations in the Catalog with the original journal references, and the index of infrared source positions which gives source positions for alphabetically listed sources in the Catalog. The Catalog data base contains over 85,000 observations of about 10,000 infrared sources, of which about 2,000 have no known visible counterpart.

Costs of measuring leaf area index of corn

The magnitude of plant-to-plant variability of leaf area of corn plants selected from uniform plots was examined and four representative methods for measuring leaf area index (LAI) were evaluated. The number of plants required and the relative costs for each sampling method were calculated to detect 10, 20, and 50% differences in LAI using 0.05 and 0.01 tests of significance and a 90% probability of success (beta = 0.1). The natural variability of leaf area per corn plant was nearly 10%. Additional variability or experimental error may be introduced by the measurement technique employed and by nonuniformity within the plot. Direct measurement of leaf area with an electronic area meter had the lowest CV, required that the fewest plants be sampled, but required approximately the same amount of time as the leaf area/weight ratio method to detect comparable differences. Indirect methods based on measurements of length and width of leaves required more plants but less total time than the direct method. Unless the coefficients for converting length and width to area are verified frequently, the indirect methods may be biased. When true differences in LAI among treatments exceed 50% of mean, all four methods are equal. The method of choice depends on the resources available, the differences to be detected, and what additional information, such as leaf weight or stalk weight, is also desired.

Sunspot index infers a small relict magnetic field in the sun's core

Inferences from the asymmetry in time of the solar sunspot number, taken over many cycles, yields evidence for the relict magnetic field in the solar core which Cowling (1945) suggested would not decay, over the solar system's lifetime, given sufficiently high bulk electrical conductivity. Whether such a relict field is present can be ascertained either by searching for the presence of a 22-year line quintet in the Fourier spectrum of the sunspot index or by processing the time sequence in order to highlight an offset. Since the solar cycle is unstable to frequency drifts, the presence of frequency modulation can lead to a spurious relict field signal.

Relating the microwave backscattering coefficient to leaf area index

This paper examines the relationship between the microwave backscattering coefficient of a vegetation canopy, sigma (can, 0) and the canopy's leaf area index (LAI). The relationship is established through the development of one model for corn and sorghum and another for wheat. Both models are extensions of the cloud model of Attema and Ulaby (1978). Analysis of experimental data measured at 8.6, 13.0, 17.0, and 35.6 GHz indicates that most of the temporal variations of sigma (can, 0) can be accounted for through variations in green LAI alone, if the latter is greater than 0.5.

Dynamic compensation and decoupling for systems of uniform index 2

A procedure for the design of n-dimensional dynamic compensators for systems of dimension 2n and uniform controllability and observability indexes two was developed. The design in state space and in frequency domain is presented. The design and a minimal dimension dynamic compensator and Luenberger observer are applied to a two-link nonlinear biped (n=2) model in the vicinity of the vertical stance to test the effectiveness of their regulating actions, and the results are presented.

Estimates of leaf area index from spectral reflectance of wheat under different cultural practices and solar angle

The influence of management practices and solar illumination angle on the leaf area index (LAI) was estimated from measurements of wheat canopy reflectance evaluated by two methods, a regression formula and an indirect technique. The date of planting and the time of irrigation in relation to the stage of plant growth were found to have significant effects on the development of leaves in spring wheat. A reduction in soil moisture adversely affected both the duration and magnitude of the maximum LAI for late planting dates. In general, water stress during vegetative stages resulted in a reduction in maximum LAI, while water stress during the reproductive period shortened the duration of green LAI in spring wheat. Canopy geometry and solar angle also affected the spectral properties of the canopies, and hence the estimated LAI. Increase in solar zenith angles resulted in a general increase in estimated LAI obtained from both methods.

Spectral estimation of green leaf area index of oats

Green leaf area index (LAI) is a measure of vegetative growth and development and is frequently used as an input parameter in yield estimation and evapotranspiration models. Extensive destructive sampling is usually required to achieve accurate estimates of green LAI in natural situations. In this investigation, a statistical modeling approach was used to predict the green LAI of oats from bidirectional reflectance data collected with multiband radiometers. Stepwise multiple regression models based on two sets of spectral reflectance factors accounted for 73 percent and 65 percent of the variance in green LAI of oats. Exponential models of spectral data transformations of greenness, normalized difference, and near-infrared/red ratio accounted for more of the variance in green LAI than the multiple regression models.

Techniques for the estimation of leaf area index using spectral data

Based on the radiative transport theory of a homogeneous canopy, a new approach for obtaining transformations of spectral data used to estimate leaf area index (LAI), is developed. The transformations which are obtained without any ground knowledge of LAI show low sensitivity to soil variability, and are linearly related to LAI with relationships which are predictable from leaf reflectance, transmittance properties, and canopy reflectance models. Evaluation of the SAIL (scattering by arbitrarily inclined leaves) model is considered. Using only nadir view data, results obtained on winter and spring wheat and corn crops are presented.

Estimation of leaf area index from bidirectional spectral reflectance data by inverting a canopy reflectance model

A technique for estimating the leaf area index from bidirectional canopy reflectance (CR) data, in the infrared region, e.g., in band 4 of a Thematic Mapper (TM), is described. It involves inversion of a CR model which accurately represents the reflectance from the canopy. A method for remotely collecting this CR data using an aircraft based TM is described. The bidirectional CR's, for a black spruce (picea mariana) canopy, for 7 solar/view directions, as measured using this technique, are given. A very preliminary analysis of the data from a point of view of estimating LAI by inversion of a CR model is given. This analysis suggests that for an acceptably accurate estimation of LAI, one will require bidirectional CR's for many more than 7 solar/view directions.

Multitemporal dimensionality of images of normalized difference vegetation index at continental scales

Two sets of multitemporal data derived from NOAA world data product are analyzed by means of principal components analysis in order to examine their underlying multitemporal dimensionality. Specifically, images of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were analyzed for eight 3-week periods for Africa and ten 3-week periods for North America sampled from throughout the year extending from April 1982 to March 1983. The two multitemporal sets of images displayed remarkable similarities in terms of their first two components, the first corresponding very closely to the annualized integrated NDVI and the second to the seasonality of the NDVI. In particular, for the African data set the feature space defined by the first two components allows separation of the main cover types.
