Advanced Simulation and Computing: FY25 Implementation Plan

The DOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP) is an integrated technical program for maintaining the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. The SSP incorporates nuclear test data, computational modeling and simulation, and experimental facilities to advance understanding of nuclear weapons. The suite of data analyzed comes from activities including previous nuclear tests, stockpile surveillance, experimental research, and development and engineering programs. This integrated national program requires the continued use of experimental facilities and the computational capabilities to support the SSP missions. These component parts, in addition to an appropriately scaled production capability, enable NNSA to support stockpile requirements. The ultimate goal of the SSP, and thus of the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program, is to ensure that the U.S. maintains a safe, secure, and effective strategic deterrent.

Self-Assembling Microgrids for Resilient Distribution Systems of the Future: Implementation in a Commercial DERMS Platform

Microgrids have long provided resilience to critical facilities such as hospitals and military installations, and they are now increasingly being looked at as a building block for future grids to support the energy resilience needs of the grid of the future. State-of-the-art technologies, such as blackstart algorithms using renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) to effectively and seamlessly form microgrids, have been produced by national labs over the years. Their adoption by the utility industry would be critical to reap the most benefits toward energy and climate resilience, and the pathway is via commercialization of these self-assembling microgrid algorithms by integrating them in a commercial product platform. This project brings a national labs team (LLNL, LANL) together with a vendor (Smarter Grid Solutions) to perform proof-of-concept integration of the algorithms into the vendor’s commercial Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS). The project provides a strong pathway to commercialization of the algorithms thereby promoting adoption of resilient microgrid technology by utilities to offer resilience benefits to all customers and especially to disadvantaged and underserved communities.

A Quantum Approach for Implementing Fixed-Point Arithmetic in Solving Ordinary Differential Equations

Differential equations (DEs) serve as fundamental tools in mathematical modeling across scientific disciplines, yet classical numerical solvers face limitations with large-scale or computationally intensive problems. This study explores a quantum-inspired approach to solving DEs, combining quantum- inspired techniques with classical methods. It focuses on fixed- point arithmetic on quantum circuits, utilizing basic quantum gates to manipulate DE solutions. We expand upon the techniques introduced by Zanger et al. [Quantum, 5, 502 (2021)] by offering a precise computation for a fixed-point signed multiplication scheme, while also presenting a quantum circuit capable of executing the fixed-point division algorithm. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through the simulation of a linear Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE), where initial conditions and parameters are encoded into quantum circuits using fixed- point representation. By executing sequences of quantum gates mimicking numerical integration steps, we obtain approximate solutions to the ODE with specified fixed-point precision.

FY25 Mid-Year Report: FNCL Enhancements Implementation

During the first half of FY25 the FNCL team has made consistent progress toward the completion of our project goals. The FNCL prototype panel design has been successfully applied to a fully instrumented 3-panel system which is actively under construction. The FNCL Demonstrator System contains solid scintillators instrumented with SiPMs, which operate on an updated CAEN digitizer, requires no high-voltage, and has a smaller overall footprint. The onboard software will include the LLNL-developed GMM-PSD signal processing. Later this year the system will be experimentally tested alongside the baseline FNCL instrument at LLNLs ISSA facility. In addition to a full systems test, the performance of a DD generator for active interrogation measurements compared to the standard AmLi source will be established for both systems. The data collected at the ISSA facility will be used to experimentally validate the FNCL-Fast Isotopic Fuel Assay’s (FIFA) capability to measure U-235 loading and to predict gadolinium poison content with passive interrogation. The FNCL-FIFA modal was benchmarked with simulation-based data and a user-friendly GUI was added earlier this year. Three separate codes have been submitted to the LLNL ESW system for review prior to their transfers. These include the Predictive Modeling Response toolkit, GMM-PSD firmware beta version, and the FNCL-FIFA analysis package with GUI and user documentation.

Molecular theory capability: LANL-PEM-Atomic implements universal descriptions of molecular photoionization

Photoionization of atomic ions, the process through which atoms in bound states absorb radiation by losing electrons, is a vital part of describing radiative transfer in mission-relevant dynamics. The photoionization of molecules dominates radiative transfer of ultraviolet (UV) and extreme UV (EUV) radiation in colder atmospheres (temperature < 30,000 degrees Kelvin). Consequently, air, which is quite transparent to our eyes (i.e., in the visible frequency regime) is remarkably opaque to radiation in much of the UV and EUV frequency regimes. This opacity makes air and other gas systems quite efficient at absorbing UV and EUV radiation, which heats the gas until ionization makes it transparent. This effect is important in describing a host of relevant phenomena, ranging from charge separation in high-altitude nuclear events and the dynamics of a nuclear fireball to the electrostatic discharges (sparks) that complicate weapons disassembly at Pantex.

Implementation of WBG devices in circuits - Electric Drive Technologies Project (Final Technical Report)

The objective of the project is to ensure that SiC devices are reliable and rugged as required in automotive applications for operational life of 300,000 hrs and create new device designs to address various weaknesses in currently available commercial devices. OSU has worked closely with SUNY Polytechnic. OSU has carried out the reliability and ruggedness evaluations of commercial devices as well as those fabricated by SUNY Polytechnic, discussed the results with SUNY Poly, and collaborated with the PI at SUNY Poly to improve the designs with respect to reliability/ruggedness. OSU work focused on reliability/ruggedness evaluation of SiC devices by individually testing them and then evaluate them in a 10 kW, 3 phase inverter system built with a specific purpose of stressing devices using realistic drive cycles such as a 10-minute hill climb. It should be noted that the primary purpose of the 10 kW inverter is to provide a platform for stressing the SiC devices under accelerated but realistic drive conditions.

Implementation of disruptive designs for gas turbine components using direct energy deposition additive manufacturing

This research aims to develop a framework for establishing the correlation between in-situ monitoring data, process parameters, and microstructure evolution in blown-powder laser-directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing (AM). To achieve this, a comprehensive manufacturing framework has been developed, spanning from in-situ data acquisition, melt-pool simulation, microstructure modeling, and statistical microstructure quantification. A machine learning-based surrogate model is constructed to predict melt pool geometry directly from in-situ coaxial camera data. The surrogate model is trained using outputs from a high-fidelity melt pool simulation, which provides accurate melt pool dimension data under varying process conditions. The predicted melt pool geometry is then used as input to a microstructure model to predict microstructural features. To rigorously compare and analyze microstructures, the project introduces statistical metrics that quantify differences based on key features such as morphology and texture. Microstructures are represented using advanced statistical descriptors including angular chord length distribution, two-point spatial statistics, orientation distribution function, and global spherical harmonic. These representations are used to compute four distinct “dissimilarity scores” that quantitatively capture differences in texture and morphology. This framework is demonstrated to enable automated calibration of simulation parameters by minimizing discrepancies between simulated and target microstructures. The technology developed in this project enables direct correlation between in-situ monitoring data and resulting microstructure, paving the way for adaptive microstructure control in metal AM. This capability strengthens the connection between process parameters and final material properties, facilitating more precise and reliable material design.
