Effects of heterogeneity and of shear flow in weak turbulent fields
Onset of detonation in heterogeneous field of low volatility fuel droplets
The amount of data of all kinds available electronically has increased dramatically in recent years. The data resides in different forms, ranging from unstructured data in the systems to highly structured in relational database systems. Data is accessible through a variety of interfaces including Web browsers, database query languages, application-specic interfaces, or data exchange formats. Some of this data is raw data, e.g., images or sound. Some of it has structure even if the structure is often implicit, and not as rigid or regular as that found in standard database systems. Sometimes the structure exists but has to be extracted from the data. Sometimes also it exists but we prefer to ignore it for certain purposes such as browsing. We call here semi-structured data this data that is (from a particular viewpoint) neither raw data nor strictly typed, i.e., not table-oriented as in a relational model or sorted-graph as in object databases. As will seen later when the notion of semi-structured data is more precisely de ned, the need for semi-structured data arises naturally in the context of data integration, even when the data sources are themselves well-structured. Although data integration is an old topic, the need to integrate a wider variety of data- formats (e.g., SGML or ASN.1 data) and data found on the Web has brought the topic of semi-structured data to the forefront of research. The main purpose of the paper is to isolate the essential aspects of semi- structured data. We also survey some proposals of models and query languages for semi-structured data. In particular, we consider recent works at Stanford U. and U. Penn on semi-structured data. In both cases, the motivation is found in the integration of heterogeneous data.
Multifunction phased array systems with radar, telecom, and imaging applications have already been established for flat plate phased arrays of dipoles, or waveguides. In this paper the design trades and candidate options for combining the radar and telecom functions of the Deep Space Network (DSN) into a single large transmit array of small parabolic reflectors will be discussed. In particular the effect of combing the radar and telecom functions on the sizes of individual antenna apertures and the corresponding spacing between the antenna elements of the array will be analyzed. A heterogeneous architecture for the DSN large transmit array is proposed to meet the radar and telecom requirements while considering the budget, scheduling, and strategic planning constrains.
Taking advantage of the improved radiometric resolution of Landsat-8 OLI which, unlike previous Landsat sensors, does not saturate over snow, the progress of fire recovery progress at the landscape scale (less than 100 m) is examined. High quality Landsat-8 albedo retrievals can now capture the true reflective and layered character of snow cover over a full range of land surface conditions and vegetation densities. This new capability particularly improves the assessment of post-fire vegetation dynamics across low- to high-burn severity gradients in Arctic and boreal regions in the early spring, when the albedos during recovery show the greatest variation. We use 30 m resolution Landsat-8 surface reflectances with concurrent coarser resolution (500 m) MODIS high quality full inversion surface Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Functions (BRDF) products to produce higher resolution values of surface albedo. The high resolution full expression shortwave blue sky albedo product performs well with an overall RMSE of 0.0267 between tower and satellite measures under both snow-free and snow-covered conditions. While the importance of post-fire albedo recovery can be discerned from the MODIS albedo product at regional and global scales, our study addresses the particular importance of early spring post-fire albedo recovery at the landscape scale by considering the significant spatial heterogeneity of burn severity, and the impact of snow on the early spring albedo of various vegetation recovery types. We found that variations in early spring albedo within a single MODIS gridded pixel can be larger than 0.6. Since the frequency and severity of wildfires in Arctic and boreal systems is expected to increase in the coming decades, the dynamics of albedo in response to these rapid surface changes will increasingly impact the energy balance and contribute to other climate processes and physical feedback mechanisms. Surface radiation products derived from Landsat-8 data will thus play an important role in characterizing the carbon cycle and ecosystem processes of high latitude systems.

The Thermal Stability of Hydrazine has been studied in the temperature and pressure intervals of 175" to 250"C. and 300 to 430 p.s.i., Respectively. Previous studies of the decomposition of hydrazine indicated that several factors affect its stability (2, 5, 7). the rate of decomposition is increased by the presence of certain surfaces (especially metals and salts). pH, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Further explosive decomposition Is attributable to the uncontrolled heterogeneous, gas-phase decomposition. These factors were considered in selecting the following experimental conditions: highly purified hydrazine was prepared in a nitrogen atmosphere, and this product was decomposed over triply distilled mercury in outgassed borosilicate glass tubes at ullages that were initially zero. This study also included the effects of added quantities of ammonia on the rate of decomposition and an investigation of the products of the decomposition.

Our present state of understanding of the steady-state combustion mechanisms of solid propellants is reviewed. Attention is focused principally on heterogeneous propellants. Both experimental and theoretical work is discussed. The recent advances considered include studies of linear pyrolysis of propellant constituents, deflagration of exothermic oxidizers, combustion of oxidizer spheres in gaseous fuels, porous-bed combustion, reactions between gaseous fuel and gaseous oxidizer components, metal combustion, propellant strand burning, rocket motor combustion and microcinematographic experimentation. A theoretical analysis of a model of homogeneous propellant combustion is outlined in detail, with special emphasis placed on surface gasification laws and on flammability limits in nonadiabatic systems. Low pressure, moderate pressure, plateau and high pressure domains of combustion are identified for ammonium perchlorate composite propellants. It is concluded that a better foundation for investigating composite propellant combustion properties is available for ammonium perchlorate than for any other oxidizer. Avenues for potentially fruitful future research are recommended.
