Adhesion and friction of transition metals in contact with nonmetallic hard materials

Sliding friction experiments were conducted with the metals yttrium, titanium, tantalum, zirconium, vanadium, neodymium, iron, cobalt, nickel, tungsten, platinum, rhenium, ruthenium, and rhodium in sliding contact with single crystal diamond, silicon carbide, pyrolytic boron nitride, and ferrite. Auger electron spectroscopy analysis was conducted with the metals and nonmetals to determine the surface chemistry and the degree of surface cleanliness. The results of the investigation indicate the adhesion and friction of the transition metals in contact with diamond, silicon carbide, boron nitride, and ferrite are related to the relative chemical activity of the metals. The more chemically active the metal, the higher the coefficient of friction and the greater amount of transfer to the nonmetals.

RAD hard PROM design study

The results of a preliminary study on the design of a radiation hardened fusible link programmable read-only memory (PROM) are presented. Various fuse technologies and the effects of radiation on MOS integrated circuits are surveyed. A set of design rules allowing the fabrication of a radiation hardened PROM using a Si-gate CMOS process is defined. A preliminary cell layout was completed and the programming concept defined. A block diagram is used to describe the circuit components required for a 4 K design. A design goal data sheet giving target values for the AC, DC, and radiation parameters of the circuit is presented.

The hard X-ray pulse profile of GX 1+4

Results are reported from 1976 and 1977 observations of the galactic center X-ray source GX 1+4. On these two occasions, epoch folding at twice the previously reported period of about two minutes has resulted in an asymmetry between the shapes of the two resultant peaks in the light curve, indicating that the true period may be about four minutes. Mean intensity is shown to vary from pulse to pulse.

Hercules X-1 hard X-ray pulsations observed from HEAO 1

The 1.24-sec pulsations of Her X-1 in the energy range 13-75 keV have been analyzed in data obtained from the UCSD/MIT experiment on HEAO 1 during observations of the source on three dates in February 1978 and three in August 1978. Observational results are (1) the main pulse broadens somewhat with increasing energy; (2) the pulsation light curve undergoes pronounced changes at the leading edge of the main pulse from day to day; (3) spectral hardening within the main pulse is confirmed; (4) a 40-60 keV spectral feature in the spectrum is confirmed; (5) this feature is resolved, the pulse width broadening is greater than 20%, and its centroid varies with pulsation phase; and (6) the 13-75 keV spectrum does not noticeably vary from day to day, except for an overall intensity factor. Some implications of these results for the prevailing models of Her X-1 and the HZ Her-Her X-1 system are briefly discussed.

Limits on the streaming and escape of electrons in thermal models for solar hard X-ray emission

Upper limits on the number of fast electrons streaming through and escaping from a plasma whose electrons have been heated to approximately 100 billion K and confined by a collisionless ion-acoustic thermal conduction front are determined. It is shown that such a front is fairly transparent to fast electrons with velocities much larger than the thermal velocity because the anisotropic ion-acoustic waves cannot scatter them, making them collisionless on a scale much larger than the thickness of the front. The collisionless analog of the collisional thermoelectric field is derived self-consistently and shown to offer a significant impediment to fast electrons because they must climb over a larger potential barrier than in the collisional case. The only factors limiting the escape of electrons able to surmount this barrier are their rate of production and the requirement that they carry less heat flux than the maximum heat flux allowable. The rate of production is determined for the case of a Maxwellian whose tail is being filled collisionally.

The hard X-ray spectrum of X Persei

Results of observations of 3U 0352 + 30, the source associated with the X Persei system, in the energy range 12-180 keV are reported. The measurements were made on 1978 August 22 with the UCSD/MIT High-Energy X-ray and Low-Energy Gamma-ray Experiment on HEAO 1. Data taken simultaneously in the energy range 2-50 keV indicate that, in addition to a 7 keV thermal bremsstrahlung component, there is a second component of higher energy. It is found that this higher energy component fits a power law of photon index 1.3 (+0.4, -0.5) and is pulsed at the 13.95 minute period of the lower energy component.

Microorganisms and biomolecules in space hard environment

Microorganisms and biomolecules exposed to space vacuum and to different intensities of selected wavelengths of solar ultraviolet radiation is studied. The influence of these factors, applied singly or simultaneously, on the integrity of microbial systems and biomolecules is measured. Specifically, this experiment will study in Bacillus subtilis spores (1) disturbances in subsequent germination, outgrowth, and colony formation; (2) photochemical reactions of the DNA and protein in vivo and in vitro and their role in biological injury; and (3) the efficiency of repair processes in these events.

Correlation of hard X-ray and type 3 bursts in solar flares

Correlations between X-ray and type 3 radio emission of solar bursts are described through a bivariate distribution function. Procedures for determining the form of this distribution are described. A model is constructed to explain the correlation between the X-ray spectral index and the ratio of X-ray to radio intensities. Implications of the model are discussed.

Hard X-ray structure of the Crab Nebula

Two-dimensional maps of the Crab Nebula have been synthesized in 22-64 keV range through the modulation collimator experiment. The effective angular resolution is about 15-arcmin. The result indicates that the Crab morphology is strictly controlled by the pulsar.

Hard permanent magnet development trends and their application to A.C. machines

The physical and magnetic properties of Mn-Al-C, Fe-Cr-Co, and RE-TM (rare earth-transition metal intermetallics) in polymer and soft metal bonded or sintered form are considered for ac circuit machine usage. The manufacturing processes for the magnetic materials are reviewed, and the mechanical and electrical properties of the magnetic materials are compared, with consideration given to the reference Alnico magnet. The Mn-Al-C magnets have the same magnetic properties and costs as Alnico units, operate well at low temperatures, but have poor high temperature performance. Fe-Cr-Co magnets also have comparable cost to Alnico magnets, and operate at high or low temperature, but are brittle, expensive, and contain Co. RE-Co magnets possess a high energy density, operate well in a wide temperature range, and are expensive. Recommendation for exploring the rare-earth alternatives are offered.

The hard X-ray flux from gamma Cassiopeiae during 1970-73

X-ray observations are presented of the Be star Gamma Cas obtained with the Uhuru satellite between December 27, 1970, and February 15, 1973. Though variable, the X-ray source (MX 0053+60) persisted throughout the life-time of the Uhuru satellite, with an average daily flux (2-6 keV) of 4.1 counts/s or 4.0 x 10 to the 32nd ergs/s if the star is at a distance of 220 pc. Variations on time scales of months, days, and hours were observed, but a pulsation period was not found. An analysis is made of the continuous X-ray spectrum, and the X-ray flux and its behavior during the early 1970s are compared with more recent observations from the SAS-3, Copernicus, HEAO-1, and Einstein satellites.

High energy resolution observation of the Crab and AO535 plus 26 in the hard X-ray range

A number of uncertainties exist currently regarding the existence of gamma-ray lines in the Crab spectrum. An investigation was, therefore, conducted, and the Crab was observed for eight hours during a balloon flight from Palestine, TX, on September 26, 1980. It appeared that the binary source AO535 plus 26 contaminated the Crab data. It was, however, possible to separate the two sources. The obtained results are discussed and evaluated. It is found that the possibility of a line at 73 keV with the intensity reported by Ling et al. (1979) can be excluded for the obtained data. The 400 keV line cannot be ruled out. The results concerning AO535 plus 26 are very different from those previously obtained.
