Alaska Hydrogen Opportunities Report

This inaugural report on Alaska's hydrogen energy opportunities introduces key themes for developing a hydrogen economy in Alaska, establishes a baseline understanding of Alaska's infrastructure and resources relevant to hydrogen, and contextualizes this baseline in terms of national and global initiatives focused on hydrogen. This report could be further developed into a hydrogen roadmap or a statewide hydrogen strategy in the future. The driving group behind this report, the Alaska Hydrogen Working Group, was formed in 2022 to address the increasing interest in hydrogen energy opportunities in Alaska. As of December 2023, there were nearly 200 members representing industry, government, academia, communities, tribal entities, and interested citizens from both inside and outside Alaska. Since its inception, the group has met monthly to discuss issues of interest and to share insights and questions. One task is to synthesize Alaska's hydrogen energy opportunities and potential into a report. This task not only reflects grassroots interest but also responds to objectives outlined in Alaska Statewide: Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy 2022-2027 (Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, 2022), one of which is to develop and implement a hydrogen roadmap for Alaska. The goals of this report are to enhance knowledge and information sharing, spur innovation and investment that could help transform Alaska's energy systems, and identify economic and workforce development opportunities across the state. Following the elements of the hydrogen economy outlined in the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, published in June 2023, this report explores the production, storage/delivery, and end-use options in evolving markets for Alaska, both within and outside the state. It also outlines key opportunities to identify and develop infrastructure investments, policy and regulatory frameworks, future research and demonstration priorities, economic and investment considerations, and workforce programs. These goals and opportunities are intended to support a statewide hydrogen energy economy that is equitable, diverse, environmentally just, and supportive of Indigenous rights and value systems.

Integrated Methane Monitoring Platform Extension, Volume I: Final Technical Report

The IMMPE project, DE-FE0032284, was to enhance methane monitoring technologies and their applications across various natural gas asset classes. The scope included deploying advanced methane detection and monitoring technologies to identify and mitigate fugitive methane emissions, measuring emission rates, and assessing impacts. The findings included the successful mitigation of identified emissions and quantification of emission rates. A key outcome was the development of a comprehensive template and summary of recommendations for methane emissions monitoring, which is replicable for both upstream and downstream applications. Furthermore, the project emphasized the importance of education by providing training opportunities for technicians and regulators, thereby fostering awareness and promoting the adoption of cost-effective methane emissions monitoring and management techniques.

Model-form Error Correction using Universal Differential Equations for an Agent-Based Model of Infectious Disease

This report demonstrates universal differential equations (UDEs) as an approach to bridge the gap between ordinary differential equations (ODE) models and agent-based models (ABMs). Using UDE models as surrogates for ABMs allows us to preserve the foundational ODE that represents global disease dynamics while coupling it with a neural network model to approximate functions for the local behaviors of the ABM.

Quartz Ampoule Loading, Sealing, and Inspection

This procedure applies to the loading of materials into quartz ampoules and flame sealing these ampoules. Flame sealed quartz ampoules are commonly used as a sealed containment for neutron irradiation. Due to the importance of maintaining containment for this application, this procedure involves a double encapsulation design wherein a sealed inner ampoule is sealed is in turn sealed within a larger diameter outer ampoule. General guidance for inspection of ampoules by destructive, non-destructive, qualitative (e.g., visual) and other methods are given. Materials to be placed inside the ampoules may consist of stable element materials or radioactive materials in either solid or liquid form. Liquids shall be dried prior to sealing the ampoule.

Large reductions in Permian Basin methane intensity shown in multi-year comparison of aerially-visible methane emissions

Spanning the US states of Texas and New Mexico, the Permian Basin has been a hotspot of methane emissions from oil and natural gas activity 1–4, although studies disagree over the magnitude of these emissions. The most comprehensive measurement campaigns published were conducted in 2019 1–5 .There have been large changes in the energy industry since then, including in the prices of oil and gas, both state and federal regulatory environments, investor and activist pressure over methane emissions, and the adoption of new technologies and policies by energy operators. Understanding how any or all of these might influence methane emissions is important for policy makers, oil and gas operators, and other stakeholders. We characterize the time evolution of Permian Basin methane emissions using a series of comprehensive aerial surveys conducted every year from 2020-2023 and compare them to the 2019 results cited above. To maintain comparability, all the data sets are from surveys using Insight M point source methane sensing technology. The scope of these surveys expanded over time: from 33-46% of wells, oil production, and gas production in 2020 to 60-65% in 2021, to 84% of wells and over 90% of both oil and gas production in 2023. These surveys by Insight M also include hundreds of gas processing plants and compressor stations as well as 1000s of km of gathering and transmission pipelines. Considering only the aerially detected portion of emissions (typically the majority of the total in such surveys 4), we find reductions of more than 70% in methane emissions intensity compared to the 2019 New Mexico-only Insight M survey, with variation depending on the year 3,4. Notably, although sources below 100 kg/hr contributed less than 10% of aerially measured emissions the 2019 New Mexico survey 3, these smaller sources constitute a larger proportion of total aerially measured emissions (although not the majority) in 2020-2023. Production facilities and gathering pipelines are responsible for the larges shares of total emissions, followed by compressor stations and gas processing plants. Permian methane emissions were also measured in a comprehensive 2019 Permian-wide survey by the Carbon Mapper team 2. That analysis led to a lower total emissions estimate at the time 4. These new Insight M-based emission rates are still roughly 30-70% lower than the aerially measured portion of the 2019 Carbon Mapper-based estimates 4. Further work is needed to harmonize these surveys in space and time to create the most intercomparable numbers possible 5. Additional analysis is needed to compare our findings to the more spatially constrained 2020, 2021, and 2023 Carbon Mapper surveys in the Permian 4,6. The evidence is strong from these two survey teams that emissions intensity has declined significantly since 2019. Reasons for this trend are currently unclear but point to possible success of emissions control programs. Future work investigating frequency, source, and operator-specific intensities could provide insights into the causes of this promising trend.

New MicroBooNE Single Photon Searches: Delta Radiative Decay, Coherent, and Inclusive

The MicroBooNE experiment is a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) in the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab. The LArTPC technology allows us to distinguish between electron and photon showers, which is crucial for identifying the source of the long-standing anomalous excess reported by MiniBooNE. Initial MicroBooNE results have challenged the electron interpretation, which highlights the importance of further study of the single photon channel. In this talk, we present results from three new and improved searches for single photons, offering a wider probe of the photon channel: an enhanced search for NC Delta radiative single photon production, the world’s first search for neutrino-induced coherent single photon production, and an inclusive search for single photons in a diverse set of topologies.
