Virtual Hawking Radiation

We consider the effects of off-shell Hawking radiation on scattering processes involving black holes coupled to quantum fields. The focus here is to the case of gravitational scattering of a scalar field mediated by the exchange of virtual Hawking gravitons from a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. Our result is obtained in the context of a worldline effective field theory for the black hole, and is valid in the semi-classical limit where the Schwarzschild radius rs is larger than the Planck length 1/m Pl . In addition, we assume that four-momentum exchange q is smaller than r s –1 and that the incoming particle has energy larger then the black hole's Hawking temperature. The inelastic cross section we obtain is a new, leading order quantum gravity effect, arising at the same order in q 2 /$m$ $^{2}_{Pl}$ as the well understood one-loop graviton vacuum polarization corrections to gravitational scattering between massive particles.

Temperature effects on the neutron matter equation of state obtained from chiral effective field theory

Temperature effects on the neutron matter equation of state (EoS) are investigated in the framework of chiral effective field theory. Recently, state-of-the-art chiral two-nucleon forces are applied from third to fifth order in the chiral expansion together with chiral three-nucleon forces, allowing for a determination of the truncation error of the theoretical predictions. The thermodynamic quantities considered include the chemical potential, the internal energy, the entropy, and the free energy. In general, good order-by-order convergence of all predictions is observed. As to be expected, temperature effects are largest at low density. Finally, the temperature dependence of the chiral three-nucleon force turns out to be weak.

An Energy-Integrated Analysis for Measuring the Anomalous Precession Frequenzc for the Muon g - 2 Experiment at Fermilab

In the search for physics beyond the Standard Model, the Muon g - 2 Experiment at Fermilab (E989) will make the most precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, a μ . Improvements in precision come from both increased statistics and new techniques to significantly reduce previous systematic uncertainties. The muon a μ is determined by extracting both the anomalous spin precession frequency, ω a , and the average magnetic field sampled by the muons, B. Traditionally an energy threshold analysis method which requires reconstruction of decay positrons from the muon decay, μ + → e + ν e ν μ has been used to extract ω a . This thesis will describe a novel, energy-integrated analysis method for ωa extraction that does not require full reconstruction of positron hits and lowers the energy threshold therefore sampling more of the stored muons. This new technique has different sensitivities to effects like gain fluctuations and positron pulse pile-up. The analysis results will focus on data taken in 2019, the second year of running the experiment.

An effective field theory for muon conversion and muon decay-in-orbit

Muon conversion is one of the best probes of charged lepton flavor violation. The experimental limit is soon expected to improve by four orders of magnitude, thus calling for precise predictions of the shape of the signal spectrum. Equally important are precise predictions for muon decay-in-orbit, the main background for muon conversion. While the calculation of electromagnetic corrections to the two processes above the nuclear scale does not involve significant challenges, it becomes substantially more complex below that scale due to multiple scales, bound-state effects and experimental setup. Here, we present a systematic framework that addresses these challenges by resorting to a series of effective field theories. Combining Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET), Non-Relativistic QED (NRQED), potential NRQED, Soft-Collinear Effective Theory I and II, and boosted HQET, we derive a factorization theorem and present the renormalization group equations. Our framework allows for the proper calculation of precise predictions for the rates of the two processes, with crucial implications for the upcoming muon conversion searches. We also provide the most accurate prediction of the signal shape for those searches.

Observation of an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in high-purity LaNiO 3

Amongst the rare-earth perovskite nickelates, LaNiO 3 (LNO) is an exception. While the former have insulating and antiferromagnetic ground states, LNO remains metallic and non-magnetic down to the lowest temperatures. It is believed that LNO is a strange metal, on the verge of an antiferromagnetic instability. Our work suggests that LNO is a quantum critical metal, close to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP). The QCP behavior in LNO is manifested in epitaxial thin films with unprecedented high purities. We find that the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the resistivity of LNO at low temperatures are consistent with scatterings of charge carriers from weak disorder and quantum fluctuations of an antiferromagnetic nature. Furthermore, we find that the introduction of a small concentration of magnetic impurities qualitatively changes the magnetotransport properties of LNO, resembling that found in some heavy-fermion Kondo lattice systems in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic QCP.

SPY: a conceptual design study of a magnet system for a high-pressure gaseous TPC neutrino detector

Here, we present a novel conceptual design for a magnet system that provides the magnetic field necessary for the analysis of tracks in a high-pressure gaseous argon TPC while simultaneously serving as a pressure vessel to contain the TPC gas volume. The magnet was developed within a Near Detector proposal for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The high-pressure gaseous argon TPC is a component proposed to be one of the elements of an ensemble of near detectors that are needed for DUNE.

Absorption of Axion Dark Matter in a Magnetized Medium

Detection of axion dark matter heavier than an meV is hindered by its small wavelength, which limits the useful volume of traditional experiments. This problem can be avoided by directly detecting in-medium excitations, whose ∼ meV – eV energies are decoupled from the detector size. We show that for any target inside a magnetic field, the absorption rate of electromagnetically coupled axions into in-medium excitations is determined by the dielectric function. As a result, the plethora of candidate targets previously identified for sub-GeV dark matter searches can be repurposed as broadband axion detectors. We find that a kg yr exposure with noise levels comparable to recent measurements is sufficient to probe parameter space currently unexplored by laboratory tests. Noise reduction by only a few orders of magnitude can enable sensitivity to the QCD axion in the ∼ 10 meV – 10 eV mass range. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Confronting Dark Matter with the Multiwavelength Sky (Final Technical Report)

The existence of dark matter is a key clue to new fundamental physics, yet its nature and non-gravitational interactions remain mysterious. In the course of this five-year project (spanning July 2015 - July 2020), we have developed novel analysis techniques to separate dark matter signals from astrophysical backgrounds in the inner Galaxy, and measured hitherto-unknown properties of the Fermi Bubbles and the Galactic Center excess in gamma-rays from the inner Milky Way. We have improved predictions for the spatial distribution and energy spectra of photon signals from dark matter, and set new limits from astrophysical and cosmological datasets on dark matter inhabiting complex dark sectors, multi-particle dark matter annihilation, and tiny primordial black holes. We have successfully adapted effective field theory techniques from collider physics to make high-precision predictions for signals from heavy weakly-interacting DM, allowing us to essentially exclude the possibility that DM is a thermal wino, and have discovered novel theoretical and observational implications for dark matter bound states and self-interactions. We have developed a comprehensive public code package for modeling the effects of exotic energy injections, such as from dark matter annihilation and decay, on the ionization and temperature history of the early cosmos, and have used these tools to set robust, powerful and broadly-applicable constraints on models of light dark matter.

Snowmass Early Career

The Snowmass 2021 strategic planning process provided an essential opportunity for the United States high energy physics and astroparticle (HEPA) community to come together and discuss upcoming physics goals and experiments. As this forward-looking perspective on the field often reaches far enough into the future to surpass the timescale of a single career, consideration of the next generation of physicists is crucial. The 2021 Snowmass Early Career (SEC) organization aimed to unite this group, with the purpose of both educating the newest generation of physicists while informing the senior generation of their interests and opinions. SEC is the latest in a series of the previously dubbed "Snowmass Young" organizations, from 2013 and 2001. This iteration has expanded on these efforts to significantly increase involvement and broaden the representation of the early career community in the process. Early career physicists are the future of the field. They will design, build, and operate next-generation experiments, and put in the work to usher in new discoveries. They are also disproportionately involved in work to improve the climate within HEPA. This document summarizes the work of SEC in consolidating a huge variety of physics perspectives and community opinions towards a bright, strategic future.

Oxidized structure and Compositional properties of 1144 phase FBS by analytical electron microscopy

The 1144 phase (Ae1A1Fe4As4) shows a strong advantage of engineering fabrication among Fe Iron)-based superconductor (FBS) family due to the robustness of its superconducting properties with respect to chemical inhomogeneities, granted by its uniform crystalline-layered structure. This regularity is furthermore associated to crystalline defects capable of acting as efficient pinning centers, which high critical currents achieved at high fields for these superconductors. Like other FBS phases, its lossless current-carrying capability can be remarkably degraded by distractions at grain boundaries (GBs). GB oxidation is an issue of upmost importance to the realization of the practical FBS application for high field (> 20T) magnet. In this study, we explore oxidized grain boundary and intrinsic grain structural properties of 1144 polycrystalline samples by applying analytical electron microscopy such as atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. These structural properties of samples produced by a mechanochemically assisted synthesis are evaluated following the degradation of superconducting properties due to oxidation. We observe a strong correlation between the contamination at grain boundaries and the decrease of transport properties of the bulk sample, while the crystallin structure seems to be not affected by the oxidation.

Testing meson portal dark sector solutions to the MiniBooNE anomaly at the Coherent CAPTAIN Mills experiment

A solution to the MiniBooNE excess invoking rare three-body decays of the charged pions and kaons to new states in the MeV mass scale was recently proposed as a dark-sector explanation. This class of solution illuminates the fact that, while the charged pions were focused in the target-mode run, their decay products were isotropically suppressed in the beam-dump-mode run in which no excess was observed. This suggests a new physics solution correlated to the mesonic sector. We investigate an extended set of phenomenological models that can explain the MiniBooNE excess as a dark sector solution, utilizing long-lived particles that might be produced in the three-body decays of the charged mesons and the two-body anomalous decays of the neutral mesons. Over a broad set of interactions with the long-lived particles, we show that these scenarios can be compatible with constraints from LSND, KARMEN, and MicroBooNE, and evaluate the sensitivity of the ongoing and future data taken by the Coherent CAPTAIN Mills experiment to a potential discovery in this parameter space. Completely dark matter from rapid-turn multifield inflation

We study cosmological gravitational particle production as applied to “rapid-turn” models of inflation involving two scalar fields. We are interested in the production of massive spin-0 particles that only interact gravitationally and provide a candidate for the dark matter. Specifically, we study two models of rapid-turn multifield inflation, motivated in part by the de Sitter swampland conjecture, that are distinguished by the curvature of field space and the presence or absence of field space ‘angular momentum’ conservation. We find that one of these models leads to insufficient particle production and cannot explain the observed dark matter relic abundance. The second model is able to explain the origin of spin-0 dark matter via gravitational production, and we identify the relevant region of parameter space that is consistent with measurements of the dark-matter relic abundance, the dark-matter-photon isocurvature perturbations, and the spectrum of curvature perturbations that is probed by cosmological observations. Our work demonstrates the compatibility of the de Sitter swampland conjecture with completely dark matter.

Scattering Observables from One- and Two-body Densities: Formalism and Application to $\pmb \gamma $ ${}^3\hbox {He}$ Scattering

We introduce the transition-density formalism, an efficient and general method for calculating the interaction of external probes with light nuclei. One- and two-body transition densities that encode the nuclear structure of the target are evaluated once and stored. They are then convoluted with an interaction kernel to produce amplitudes, and hence observables. Here, by choosing different kernels, the same densities can be used for any reaction in which a probe interacts perturbatively with the target. The method therefore exploits the factorisation between nuclear structure and interaction kernel that occurs in such processes. We study in detail the convergence in the number of partial waves for matrix elements relevant in elastic Compton scattering on 3 He. The results are fully consistent with our previous calculations in Chiral Effective Field Theory. But the new approach is markedly more computationally efficient, which facilitates the inclusion of more partial-wave channels in the calculation. We also discuss the usefulness of the transition-density method for other nuclei and reactions. Calculations of elastic Compton scattering on heavier targets like 4 He are straightforward extensions of this study, since the same interaction kernels are used. And the generality of the formalism means that our 3 He densities can be used to evaluate any 3 He elastic-scattering observable with contributions from one- and two-body operators.

Unconventional ferroelectricity in moiré heterostructures

Although all matter is composed of component particles, these particles can arrange themselves in various ways, giving rise to emergent phenomena that can be surprisingly rich and often cannot be understood by studying only the individual constituents. Discovering and understanding novel forms of emergence in quantum materials, especially in those where multiple degrees of freedom or energy scales are delicately balanced, is of great fundamental interest to condensed matter research. In this work, we report on the surprising observation of emergent ferroelectricity in graphene-based moiré heterostructures. Ferroelectric materials exhibit an electrically-switchable electric dipole, which is usually formed by spatial separation between the averaged centers of positive and negative charge within the unit cell. Based on this, it is difficult to imagine graphene, a material composed only of carbon atoms, exhibiting ferroelectricity. However, in this work, we indeed realize switchable ferroelectricity in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene sandwiched between two hexagonal boron nitride (BN) layers. By introducing a moiré superlattice potential (via aligning bilayer graphene with the top and/or bottom BN crystals), we observe prominent and robust hysteretic behavior of the graphene resistance with an externally applied out-of-plane displacement field. Our systematic transport measurements reveal rich and striking response as a function of displacement field and electron filling, not previously observed in any 2D systems, and beyond the framework of conventional ferroelectrics. We further directly probe the ferroelectric polarization through a nonlocal monolayer graphene sensor. Our results suggest an unconventional, odd parity electronic ordering in the bilayer graphene/BN moiré system. This emergent moiré ferroelectricity may pave the way for ultrafast, programmable, and atomically thin carbon-based memory devices.

Phase-controlled improvement of photon lifetime in coupled superconducting cavities

High-quality cavities are crucial for various fundamental physical studies and applications. Here we find that by coupling two cavities directly or via a phase-tunable coupling channel, the photon lifetime of the local field can exceed that of the bare cavities. The cavity photon lifetime is modified by the phases of the initial states and the phase accumulation on the coupling channel, which affect the interference between cavities. In experiments, by coupling superconducting radio-frequency cavities via phase-tunable cables, we realize a factor of 2 improvement in the cavity photon lifetime. The results can bring rich revenue to quantum information science, sensing, and high-energy physics.
