Flowcharting with D-charts

A D-Chart is a style of flowchart using control symbols highly appropriate to modern structured programming languages. The intent of a D-Chart is to provide a clear and concise one-for-one mapping of control symbols to high-level language constructs for purposes of design and documentation. The notation lends itself to both high-level and code-level algorithmic description. The various issues that may arise when representing, in D-Chart style, algorithms expressed in the more popular high-level languages are addressed. In particular, the peculiarities of mapping control constructs for Ada, PASCAL, FORTRAN 77, C, PL/I, Jovial J73, HAL/S, and Algol are discussed.

A laser inverse Compton scattering diagnostic to study runaway electron dynamics during tokamak disruptions

The goal is to design a new diagnostic based on laser inverse Compton scattering (LICS) to study the dynamics of runaway electron formation and their subsequent loss during triggered disruptions in DIII-D. It is known that better measurements of the runaway electron population, throughout the evolution of a disruption, is critical for mitigating the impact of energetic electron beams especially in high plasma current discharges such as those in reactor relevant burning plasmas. The goal of the LICS approach being designed for DIII-D is to measure the timeresolved spatial profile and energy distribution of the runaway electrons while they are in the core of the tokamak plasma. During the last year, a code was developed to simulate the signals from a new laser scattering diagnostic for DIII-D, which will measure the relativistic electron population expected in DIII-D after disruptions triggered by argon pellet injection.

Experimental measurements of fluid flow in an 84-pin hexagonal rod bundle with spacer grid for a gas-cooled fast modular reactor

A 50 MW e helium-cooled fast modular reactor (FMR) is under development, and as part of the Department of Energy Integrated Research Project (IRP), Texas A&M University is conducting the thermal-hydraulic characterization of its baseline core configuration. Here, we experimentally investigated the axial and cross flow fields characteristics in the hexagonal fuel rod bundle composed of 84 rods, a central rod, and spacer grids at a Reynolds number of 12,000. A fully transparent experimental facility resembling of one unit of the fuel assembly was constructed. Time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) measurements were performed to characterize hydraulic behavior downstream the spacer grid. Velocity measurements were conducted in the axial and radial direction of the rod bundle. From the PIV velocity vector fields, the full-field flow statistics were computed for the mean velocity, vorticity, and Reynolds stresses. An analysis of the energy decay downstream of the spacer grid was conducted with calculations of secondary-flow intensities, turbulent kinetic energy, power spectrum, and spatial-temporal velocity cross correlations. The vorticity field was obtained and pairs of counter-rotating vortexes were identified using a 3D reconstruction of several measurement planes. The data from this experimental campaign will be used to validate numerical models based on Computational Fluid Dynamics and other codes.

Technical note: Recommendations for diagnosing cloud feedbacks and rapid cloud adjustments using cloud radiative kernels

Abstract. The cloud radiative kernel method is a popular approach to quantify cloud feedbacks and rapid cloud adjustments to increased CO2 concentrations and to partition contributions from changes in cloud amount, altitude, and optical depth. However, because this method relies on cloud property histograms derived from passive satellite sensors or produced by passive satellite simulators in models, changes in obscuration of lower-level clouds by upper-level clouds can cause apparent low-cloud feedbacks and adjustments, even in the absence of changes in lower-level cloud properties. Here, we provide a methodology for properly diagnosing the impact of changing obscuration on cloud feedbacks and adjustments and quantify these effects across climate models. Averaged globally and across global climate models, properly accounting for obscuration leads to weaker positive feedbacks from lower-level clouds and stronger positive feedbacks from upper-level clouds while simultaneously removing a mostly artificial anti-correlation between them. Given that the methodology for diagnosing cloud feedbacks and adjustments using cloud radiative kernels has evolved over several papers, and obscuration effects have only occasionally been considered in recent papers, this paper serves to establish recommended best practices and to provide a corresponding code base for community use.

Digital processing clock

Tthe digital processing clock SG 1157/U is described. It is compatible with the PTTI world where it can be driven by an external cesium source. Built-in test equipment shows synchronization with cesium through 1 pulse per second. It is built to be expandable to accommodate future time-keeping needs of the Navy as well as any other time ordered functions. Examples of this expandibility are the inclusion of an unmodulated XR3 time code and the 2137 modulate time code (XR3 with 1 kHz carrier).

Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) and Maintenance and Diagnostic System (MDS): A maintenance and diagnostic system for Space Station Freedom

The Maintenance and Diagnostic System (MDS) that is being developed at Honeywell to enhance the Fault Detection Isolation and Recovery system (FDIR) for the Attitude Determination and Control System on Space Station Freedom is described. The MDS demonstrates ways that AI-based techniques can be used to improve the maintainability and safety of the Station by helping to resolve fault anomalies that cannot be fully determined by built-in-test, by providing predictive maintenance capabilities, and by providing expert maintenance assistance. The MDS will address the problems associated with reasoning about dynamic, continuous information versus only about static data, the concerns of porting software based on AI techniques to embedded targets, and the difficulties associated with real-time response. An initial prototype was built of the MDS. The prototype executes on Sun and IBM PS/2 hardware and is implemented in the Common Lisp; further work will evaluate its functionality and develop mechanisms to port the code to Ada.

Development of advanced seals for space propulsion turbomachinery

Current activities in seals for space propulsion turbomachinery that the NASA Lewis Research Center sponsors are surveyed. The overall objective is to provide the designer and researcher with the concepts and the data to control seal dynamics and leakage. Included in the program are low-leakage seals, such as the brush seal, the 'ceramic rope' seal, low-leakage seals for liquid oxygen turbopumps, face seals for two phase flow, and swirl brakes for stability. Two major efforts are summarized: a seal dynamics in rotating machinery and an effort in seal code development.

IDEF4 technical report, version 1.0

A language for the representation of object oriented software designs is described. IDEF4, a methodology for object-oriented design, is being developed as a design tool for software designers who use such object-oriented languages. Such languages include the Common LISP Object System, Flavors, C++, Smalltalk, Objective C, and others. Since effective usage of the object-oriented paradigm requires a different thought process than that used with conventional procedural or database languages, standard methodologies such as structure charts, data flow diagrams, and traditional data design models (hierarchical, relational, and network) are not sufficient. IDEF4 seeks to provide the necessary facilities to support the object-oriented design decision making process. Specifically, the two primary design goals of IDEF4 are: (1) to provide support for creating object oriented designs whose implementations will exhibit desirable life cycle qualities and reduce total implementation development time; and (2) to make it easy to evaluate object oriented code to determine whether or not the delivered product both conforms to the design and exhibits the desired life cycle qualities. The application of IDEF4 in the life cycle of a software development project is intended to be focused on those activities after a decision has been made to employ object oriented programming technology, but prior to detailed code specification.

Wing Weight Optimization Under Aeroelastic Loads Subject to Stress Constraints

A minimum weight optimization of the wing under aeroelastic loads subject to stress constraints is carried out. The loads for the optimization are based on aeroelastic trim. The design variables are the thickness of the wing skins and planform variables. The composite plate structural model incorporates first-order shear deformation theory, the wing deflections are expressed using Chebyshev polynomials and a Rayleigh-Ritz procedure is adopted for the structural formulation. The aerodynamic pressures provided by the aerodynamic code at a discrete number of grid points is represented as a bilinear distribution on the composite plate code to solve for the deflections and stresses in the wing. The lifting-surface aerodynamic code FAST is presently being used to generate the pressure distribution over the wing. The envisioned ENSAERO/Plate is an aeroelastic analysis code which combines ENSAERO version 3.0 (for analysis of wing-body configurations) with the composite plate code.

Using Neural Networks to Describe Tracer Correlations

Neural networks are ideally suited to describe the spatial and temporal dependence of tracer-tracer correlations. The neural network performs well even in regions where the correlations are less compact and normally a family of correlation curves would be required. For example, the CH4-N2O correlation can be well described using a neural network trained with the latitude, pressure, time of year, and CH4 volume mixing ratio (v.m.r.). In this study a neural network using Quickprop learning and one hidden layer with eight nodes was able to reproduce the CH4-N2O correlation with a correlation co- efficient of 0.9995. Such an accurate representation of tracer-tracer correlations allows more use to be made of long-term datasets to constrain chemical models. Such as the dataset from the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) which has continuously observed CH4, (but not N2O) from 1991 till the present. The neural network Fortran code used is available for download.
