All-atmospheric fabrication of Ag–Cu core–shell nanowire transparent electrodes with Haacke figure of merit >600 × 10–3 Ω−1

Abstract Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) are essential components in devices such as touch screens, smart windows, and photovoltaics. Metal nanowire networks are promising next-generation TCEs, but best-performing examples rely on expensive metal catalysts (palladium or platinum), vacuum processing, or transfer processes that cannot be scaled. This work demonstrates a metal nanowire TCE fabrication process that focuses on high performance and simple fabrication. Here we combined direct and plating metallization processes on electrospun nanowires. We first directly metallize silver nanowires using reactive silver ink. The silver catalyzes subsequent copper plating to produce Ag–Cu core–shell nanowires and eliminates nanowire junction resistances. The process allows for tunable transmission and sheet resistance properties by adjusting electrospinning and plating time. We demonstrate state-of-the-art, low-haze TCEs using an all-atmospheric process with sheet resistances of 0.33 Ω sq −1 and visible light transmittances of 86% (including the substrate), leading to a Haacke figure of merit of 652 × 10 –3 Ω −1 . The core–shell nanowire electrode also demonstrates high chemical and bending durability.

Energetic decomposition yields efficient bimetallic Cu MOF-derived catalysts

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as efficient self-sacrificial templates to fabricate porous carbon-supported metal nanoparticles (NPs). Due to observed increased activity, catalysts containing bimetallic NPs represent an active frontier for heterogeneous catalyst development. A strategy to synthesize active catalysts with highly dispersed bimetallic metal/metal oxides within a porous carbon matrix via rapid MOF decomposition using dopants is presented in this paper. A 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) additive enhances the rapid thermolysis of the metal-doped Cu-based MOFs to minimize particle aggregation. Catalyst characterization reveals that a secondary metal increases dispersion of both metals over the carbon composite support. The catalyst preparation method influences both the metal particle size and oxidation state. Catalytic performance shows increased rates for 4-nitrophenol reduction even with <1 wt% of added secondary metal. Among the synthesized catalysts, the Ni–CuO@C bimetallic catalyst exhibits outstanding activity. This synthetic strategy is useful for creating highly efficient, robust, non-noble metal catalysts for development of sustainable chemical processes.

Structural and thermal properties of ultralow thermal conductivity Ba 3 Cu 2 Sn 3 Se 10

The thermal properties of Ba 3 Cu 2 Sn 3 Se 10 were investigated by measurement of the thermal conductivity and heat capacity. The chemical bonding in this diamagnetic material was investigated using structural data from Rietveld refinement and calculated electron localization. This quaternary chalcogenide is monoclinic (P2 1 /c), has a large unit cell with 72 atoms in the primitive cell, and a high local coordination environment. Additionally, the Debye temperature (162 K) and average speed of sound (1666 m s -1 ) are relatively low with a very small electronic contribution to the heat capacity. Ultralow thermal conductivity (0.46 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature) is attributed to the relatively weak chemical bonding and intrinsic anharmonicity, in addition to a large unit cell. This work is part of the continuing effort to explore quaternary chalcogenides with intrinsically low thermal conductivity and identify the features that result in a low thermal conductivity.

High throughput discovery of ternary Cu-Fe-Ru alloy catalysts for photo-driven hydrogen production

Light driven hydrogen production from the water splitting reaction has the ability to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in a green energy future. Here, we highlight the discovery of Cu x Ru y Fe 1-x-y nanoparticle catalysts for photo-driven hydrogen production. Through a high throughput experimental setup, robust data management pipelines and intentional experimental design, this study uncovered three highly active bimetallic systems for photo-driven hydrogen and identified a new trimetallic catalyst for this system. In most cases, the multimetallic catalysts outperformed the monometallics. Furthermore, this study highlights the expansive catalytic screening capabilities of this system in contrast to traditional catalytic selection processes through the discovery of distributions of particle compositions in binary and ternary mixtures of metals with high activity for hydrogen evolution.

Photophysical properties of three-coordinate heteroleptic Cu( I ) β-diketiminate triarylphosphine complexes

A series of heteroleptic copper(I) β-diketiminate triarylphosphine complexes is reported, having the general formula Cu(R 1 NacNac R2 )(PPh X 3 ), where R 1 NacNac R2 is a substituted β-diketiminate and PPh X 3 is a triphenylphosphine derivative. A total of five different R 1 NacNac R2 ligands and three different triarylphosphines are used to assemble the nine complexes. Here, the syntheses, X-ray crystal structures, cyclic voltammograms, and UV–vis absorption spectra of all compounds are described. Whereas most of the compounds are weakly luminescent or only luminesce at 77 K, the four complexes with the more sterically encumbered β-diketiminate ligands, with methyl or isopropyl substituents at the 2- and 6-positions of the N-phenyl rings, exhibit weak room-temperature photoluminescence with peaks between 519 and 566 nm and long excited-state lifetimes in the range of 15–70 μs. The sterically encumbering substituents in this subset have subtle effects on the UV–vis absorption maximum, which red shifts slightly as the steric bulk increases, as well as significant effects on the photoluminescence lifetime, which is observed to increase as the steric bulk is augmented. Substituents on the triarylphosphine also influence the excited-state dynamics in the bulky complexes, with the more electron-rich tris(4-methoxyphenyl)phosphine (PPh OMe 3 ) giving longer-excited-state lifetimes compared to triphenylphosphine (PPh 3 ) when the same R 1 NacNac R2 ligand is used.
