Comparative evaluation of solar, fission, fusion, and fossil energy resources. Part 5: Conclusions and recomendations

Air pollution resulting from the use of fossil fuels is discussed. Phenomena relating to the emission of CO2 such as the greenhouse effect and multiplier effect are explored. Particulate release is also discussed. The following recommendations are made for the elimination of fossil fuel combustion products in the United States: development of nuclear breeder reactors, use of solar energy systems, exploration of energy alternatives such as geothermal and fusion, and the substitution of coal for gas and oil use.

Edge and line detection in ERTS imagery: A comparative study

Several local edge detection operators were applied to a set of ERTS pictures of the Monterey, Calif. area. Gradient operators performed consistently better than laplacian operators in detecting edges. It was also found that if a grayscale normalization operation, histogram flattening, was applied to the pictures first, the edge detector outputs were greatly enhanced. The use of interpolation for more accurate location of edges on a digital picture was also briefly investigated. Curve detection operators were applied to the edge detector outputs; this had the effect of enhancing the edges while suppressing noise.

A comparative analysis of area navigation systems in general aviation

Radio navigation systems which offer the capabilities of area navigation to general aviation operators are discussed. The systems considered are: (1) the VORTAC system, (2) the Loran-C system, and (3) the Differential Omega system. The inital analyses are directed toward a comparison of the systems with respect to their compliance to specified performance parameters and to the cost effectiveness of each system in relation to those specifications. Further analyses lead to the development of system cost sensitivity charts, and the employment of these charts allows conclusions to be drawn relative to the cost-effectiveness of the candidate navigation system.

Comparative evaluation of spatial features in automatic land use classification from photographic imagery

Five spatial features have been evaluated for their applicability in automatic land use classification of photographic imagery. Data arrays of approximately 10,000 square meters were classified on the basis of an 8 by 8 point data array. Statistical features, information features, sequency features and texture features were evaluated using a distance to prototype classifier and an adaptive classifier. The results indicate approximately 70% accuracy in the classification.

Comparative evaluation of test methods to simulate acoustic response of shroud-enclosed spacecraft structures

Test methods were evaluated to ascertain whether a spacecraft, properly tested within its shroud, could be vibroacoustic tested without the shroud, with adjustments made in the acoustic input spectra to simulate the acoustic response of the missing shroud. The evaluation was based on vibroacoustic test results obtained from a baseline model composed (1) of a spacecraft with adapter, lower support structure, and shroud; (2) of the spacecraft, adapter, and lower structure, but without the shroud; and (3) of the spacecraft and adapter only. Emphasis was placed on the magnitude of the acoustic input changes required to substitute for the shroud and the difficulty of making such input changes, and the degree of missimulation which can result from the performance of a particular, less-than optimum test. Conclusions are drawn on the advantages and disadvantages derived from the use of input spectra adjustment methods and lower support structure simulations. Test guidelines were also developed for planning and performing a launch acoustic-environmental test.

A study to identify and compare airborne systems for in-situ measurements of launch vehicle effluents

An in-situ system for monitoring the concentration of HCl, CO, CO2, and Al2O3 in the cloud of reaction products that form as a result of a launch of solid propellant launch vehicle is studied. A wide array of instrumentation and platforms are reviewed to yield the recommended system. An airborne system suited to monitoring pollution concentrations over urban areas for the purpose of calibrating remote sensors is then selected using a similar methodology to yield the optimal configuration.

Comparative atmosphere structure experiment

Atmospheric structure of outer planets as determined by pressure, temperature, and accelerometers is reviewed and results obtained from the PAET earth entry are given. In order to describe atmospheric structure, entry is divided into two regimes, high and low speed. Acceleration is then measured: from these measurements density is determined as a function of time. The equations of motion are integrated to determine velocity, flight path angle, and altitude as a function of time. Density is then determined as a function of altitude from the previous determinations of density and altitude as a function of time. Hydrostatic equilibrium was assumed to determine pressure as a function of altitude. Finally the equation of space applied to determine temperature as a function of altitude, if the mean molecular weight is known. The mean molecular weight is obtained independently from either the low speed experiment or from the composition experiments.

Comparative thermal fatigue resistances of twenty-six nickel and cobalt base alloys

Thermal fatigue resistances were determined from fluidized bed tests. Cycles to cracking differed by almost three orders of magnitude for these materials with directional solidification and surface protection of definite benefit. The alloy-coating combination with the highest thermal fatigue resistance was directionally solidified NASA TAZ-8A with an RT-XP coating. It oxidation resistance was excellent, showing almost no weight change after 15 000 fluidized bed cycles.

The comparative evaluation of ERTS-1 imagery for resource inventory in land use planning

The author has identified the following significant results. Multidiscipline team interpretation and mapping of resources for Crook County is complete on 1:250,000 scale enlargements of ERTS imagery and 1:120,000 hi-flight photography. Maps of geology, soils, vegetation-land use and land resources units were interpreted to show limitations, suitabilities, and geologic hazards for land use planning. Mapping of lineaments and structures from ERTS imagery has shown a number of features not previously mapped in Oregon. A multistage timber inventory of Ochoco National Forest was made, using ERTS images as the first stage. Inventory of forest clear-cutting practices was successfully demonstrated with color composites. Soil tonal differences in fallow fields correspond with major soil boundaries in loess-mantled terrain. A digital classification system used for discriminating natural vegetation and geologic material classes was successful in separating most major classes around Newberry Caldera, Mt. Washington, and Big Summit Prairie.
