Application of an Uncoupled Elastic-plastic-creep Constitutive Model to Metals at High Temperature

A uniaxial, uncoupled constitutive model to predict the response of thermal and rate dependent elastic-plastic material behavior is presented. The model is based on an incremental classicial plasticity theory extended to account for thermal, creep, and transient temperature conditions. Revisions to he combined hardening rule of the theory allow for better representation of cyclic phenomenon including the high rate of strain hardening upon cyclic reyield and cyclic saturation. An alternative approach is taken to model the rate dependent inelastic deformation which utilizes hysteresis loops and stress relaxation test data at various temperatures. The model is evaluated and compared to experiments which involve various thermal and mechanical load histories on 5086 aluminum alloy, 304 stainless steel and Hastelloy-X.

An investigation to model radar backscatter from ridged first year sea ice for the period ending December 31, 1981

The response of the microwave scatterometer to meter scale roughness of first year sea ice was investigated. An empirical, one dimensional model was developed to predict the back scattered power from ridged first year sea ice of known surface topography, by interpreting the surface as a series of angular facets and summing the proportional power from each facet. The model is evaluated by comparing the predicted values to scatterometer measurements obtained during NASA's Sea Ice Radar Experiment (SIRE). The input to the model is surface slope, which for SIRE was calculated from the ice topography, as measured by an airborne laser profiler. The correlation between the predicted and the measured power is .62 to .68. It is concluded that the model adequately describes the backscatter from regions of first year sea ice whose dimensions are of a few tens of meters.

Friction damping studies in multiple turbine blade systems by lumped mass method

Analytical studies were conducted on multiple turbine blade systems using the lumped mass method. Each blade was idealized by a two mass-two spring model whose modal values were determined from the known frequencies corresponding to the first two bending modes and the frequency corresponding to the platform lockup condition. Two friction damping models were considered namely, the blade-to-blade and the blade-damper-blade. The equations of motion derived on the basis of these models were solved by a method of harmonic balance, assuming, in effect, that under cyclic excitation the blades will exhibit cyclic response at the same frequency. The solutions for 8 blade, 16 blade, and 4 blade systems were obtained using the computer program BLADE. The levels of damping produced by the two friction damping models were compared and evaluated. The optimal values of the friction force, for which the tip amplitude of the blades had a minimum value, were determined.

Spacecraft-borne long life cryogenic refrigeration: Status and trends

The status of cryogenic refrigerator development intended for, or possibly applicable to, long life spacecraft-borne application is reviewed. Based on these efforts, the general development trends are identified. Using currently projected technology needs, the various trends are compared and evaluated. The linear drive, non-contacting bearing Stirling cycle refrigerator concept appears to be the best current approach that will meet the technology projection requirements for spacecraft-borne cryogenic refrigerators. However, a multiply redundant set of lightweight, moderate life, moderate reliability Stirling cycle cryogenic refrigerators using high-speed linear drive and sliding contact bearings may possibly suffice.

LANDSAT 4 investigations of Thematic Mapper and multispectral scanner applications

The optimum index factor package was used to choose TM band for color compositing. Processing techniques were also used on TM data over several sites to: (1) reduce the amount of data that needs to be processed and analyzed by using statistical methods or by combining full-resolution products with spatially compressed products; (2) digitally process small subareas to improve the visual appearance of large-scale products or to merge different-resolution image data; and (3) evaluate and compare the information content of the different three-band combinations that can be made using the TM data. Results indicate that for some applications the added spectral information over MSS is even more important than the TM's increased spatial resolution.

Analysis of Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper data for classification of forest stands in Baldwin County, Alabama

A computer-implemented classification has been derived from Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper data acquired over Baldwin County, Alabama on January 15, 1983. One set of spectral signatures was developed from the data by utilizing a 3x3 pixel sliding window approach. An analysis of the classification produced from this technique identified forested areas. Additional information regarding only the forested areas. Additional information regarding only the forested areas was extracted by employing a pixel-by-pixel signature development program which derived spectral statistics only for pixels within the forested land covers. The spectral statistics from both approaches were integrated and the data classified. This classification was evaluated by comparing the spectral classes produced from the data against corresponding ground verification polygons. This iterative data analysis technique resulted in an overall classification accuracy of 88.4 percent correct for slash pine, young pine, loblolly pine, natural pine, and mixed hardwood-pine. An accuracy assessment matrix has been produced for the classification.

High temperature static strain sensor development program

The development of resistance strain gages which are useful for static strain measurements on nickel or cobalt superalloy parts inside a gas turbine engine on a test stand were examined. These measurements of a strain gage alloy development program which to be followed by an optional investigation of complete strain gage systems which will use the best of the alloys developed together with other system improvements is reviewed. The specific goal for the complete system is to make measurements to 2,000 micro epsilon with error of only + or - 10% over a 50 hour period. In addition to simple survival and stability, attaining a low thermal coefficient to resistivity, of order 100 ppm/K or less, is also a major goal. The first task was to select candidate alloys or alloy systems using a search of the literature and the available metallurgical theory. Alloy candidates were evaluated and compared by a grading system. Equipment and techniques were developed which are suitable for iterative studies of a variety of compositions. Many compositions were examined and significantly improved alloys were identified.

Multi-mesh gear dynamics program evaluation and enhancements

A multiple mesh gear dynamics computer program was continually developed and modified during the last four years. The program can handle epicyclic gear systems as well as single mesh systems with internal, buttress, or helical tooth forms. The following modifications were added under the current funding: variable contact friction, planet cage and ring gear rim flexibility options, user friendly options, dynamic side bands, a speed survey option and the combining of the single and multiple mesh options into one general program. The modified program was evaluated by comparing calculated values to published test data and to test data taken on a Hamilton Standard turboprop reduction gear-box. In general, the correlation between the test data and the analytical data is good.

Comparison of Two Orographical Data Sets for the GLAS Fourth Order GCM

The development of a 2 deg latitude by 2.5 deg longitude version of the GLAS Fourth Order General Circulation Model has necessitated the specification of a correspondingly fine horizontal resolution orographic data set to act as a lower boundary condition for the GCM. The S1 topography attempts to relate the mean areally averaged height of such terrain while the Q3 topography emphasizes the effect of the flow of the tallest peaks in such regions by specifying an exaggerated significant height. In order to assess the relative merits of these two orographic data sets. A series of tests was initiated to evaluate the comparative weather forecasting and climate simulation skills of the GLAS Fourth Order GCM when the S1 and Q3 topographies are applied to the lower boundary. Three sets of Northern Hemispheric winter forecasts at the 2 deg x 2.5 deg resolution indicate that the Q3 topography gives slightly better results over the Northern Hemisphere than does the S1 topography. It is apparent that more forecasts will be necessary at both horizontal resolutions before any definitive conclusions are made regarding the choice of an optimal orographic data set.

Feature selection and information content of thematic mapper simulator data for a forested environment

Feature selection and the information content of Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) data are investigated for a forested region in northern Idaho. The optimal TMS channels for forest structural characteristics are determined, and the capability of TMS data to describe the structural variability within a forest stand is evaluated. The comparative performance of TMS and MSS data to discriminate forest structural factors using per-pixel maximum likelihood classification is examined, and four optimal TMS channels are classified in order to ascertain if the full complement of TM channels provide higher accuracies than the four optimal ones.

Application of the finite-state arbitrary-motion aerodynamics to rotor blade aeroelastic response and stability in hover and forward flight

The primary objective of this paper is to illustrate the influence of finite-state arbitrary-motion time-domain aerodynamics on rotor blade aeroelastic stability in hover and forward flight. The essential ingredients of the generalized Greenberg type time-domain unsteady aerodynamics are presented and incorporated in a coupled nonlinear flap-lag analysis. Aeroelastic stability boundaries for both hover and forward flight are obtained using both arbitrary-motion time-domain aerodynamics and quasi-steady aerodynamics. The sensitivity of flap-lag aeroelastic stability boundaries to time-domain arbitrary-motion unsteady aerodynamics is evaluated by comparing the two sets of results for various blade configurations and flight conditions.

Structure function analyses of mesoscale VAS retrievals

Structure function analyses are used for a comparison of two VAS retrieval procedures, one obtained using a physical inversion technique and the other from a linear regression technique. Results from both procedures are evaluated and compared with those from a special mesoscale network of radiosonde stations, operated during March 6, 7, 1982 as part of the AVE-VAS field experiment. It is shown that both types of VAS retrievals underestimate the magnitudes of mean nondirectional gradients that are detected by the mesoscale radiosonde network. This result is expected since the VAS provides a volumetric sample of the atmosphere.

A water-vapor radiometer error model

The water-vapor radiometer (WVR) is used to calibrate unpredictable delays in the wet component of the troposphere in geodetic microwave techniques such as very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) and Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking. Based on experience with Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) instruments, the current level of accuracy in wet-troposphere calibration limits the accuracy of local vertical measurements to 5-10 cm. The goal for the near future is 1-3 cm. Although the WVR is currently the best calibration method, many instruments are prone to systematic error. In this paper, a treatment of WVR data is proposed and evaluated. This treatment reduces the effect of WVR systematic errors by estimating parameters that specify an assumed functional form for the error. The assumed form of the treatment is evaluated by comparing the results of two similar WVR's operating near each other. Finally, the observability of the error parameters is estimated by covariance analysis.

Generalized math model for simulation of high-altitude balloon systems

Balloon systems have proved to be a cost-effective means for conducting research experiments (e.g., infrared astronomy) in the earth's atmosphere. The purpose of this paper is to present a generalized mathematical model that can be used to simulate the motion of these systems once they have attained float altitude. The resulting form of the model is such that the pendulation and spin motions of the system are uncoupled and can be analyzed independently. The model is evaluated by comparing the simulation results with data obtained from an actual balloon system flown by NASA.
