Ultrarelativistic quark-nucleus scattering in a light-front Hamiltonian approach

In this work, we investigate the scattering of a quark on a heavy nucleus at high energies using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) formalism, which is the first application of the tBLFQ formalism in QCD. We present the real-time evolution of the quark wave function in a strong classical color field of the relativistic nucleus, described as the color glass condensate. The quark and the nucleus color field are simulated in the QCD SU(3) color space. We calculate the total and the differential cross sections, and the quark distribution in coordinate and color spaces using the tBLFQ approach. We recover the eikonal cross sections in the eikonal limit. We find that the differential cross section from the tBLFQ simulation is in agreement with a perturbative calculation at large $p_⊥$, and it deviates from the perturbative calculation at small $p_⊥$ due to higher-order contributions. In particular, we relax the eikonal limit by letting the quark carry realistic finite longitudinal momenta. We study the sub-eikonal effect on the quark through the transverse coordinate distribution of the quark with different longitudinal momentum, and we find the sub-eikonal effect to be sizable. Our results can significantly reduce the theoretical uncertainties in small $p_⊥$ region which has important implications to the phenomenology of the hadron-nucleus and deep inelastic scattering at high energies.

Unified model of nucleon elastic form factors and implications for neutrino-oscillation experiments

Precise knowledge of the nucleon’s axial-current form factors is crucial for modeling GeV-scale neutrino-nucleus interactions. Unfortunately, the axial form factor remains insufficiently constrained to meet the precision requirements of upcoming long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiments. This work studies the nucleon’s axial and vector form factors using the light-front approach to build a quark-diquark model of the nucleon with an explicit pion cloud. The light-front wave functions in both the quark and pion-baryon Fock spaces are first calibrated to existing experimental information on the nucleon’s electromagnetic form factors and then used to predict the axial form factor. The resulting squared charge radius of the axial pseudovector form factor is predicted to be $r$$^{2}_{A}$ = 0.29 ± 0.03 fm 2 , where the small error accounts for the model’s parametric uncertainty. We use our form factor results to explore the (quasi)elastic scattering of neutrinos by (nuclei)nucleons, with the result that the widely implemented dipole ansatz is an inadequate approximation of the full form factor for modeling both processes. Here, the approximation leads to a 5%–10% overestimation of the total cross section, depending on the (anti)neutrino energy. We project overestimations of similar size in the flux-averaged cross sections for the upcoming DUNE long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment.

Few-nucleon matrix elements in pionless effective field theory in a finite volume

Here, pionless effective field theory in a finite volume (FVEFT $\notπ$ ) is investigated as a framework for the analysis of multinucleon spectra and matrix elements calculated in lattice QCD (LQCD). By combining FVEFT π with the stochastic variational method, the spectra of nuclei with atomic number A ∈ {2, 3} are matched to existing finite-volume LQCD calculations at heavier-than-physical quark masses corresponding to a pion mass m $\notπ$ = 806 MeV , thereby enabling infinite-volume binding energies to be determined using infinite-volume variational calculations. Based on the variational wave functions that are constructed in this approach, the finite-volume matrix elements of various local operators are computed in FVEFT $\notπ$ and matched to LQCD calculations of the corresponding QCD operators in the same volume, thereby determining the relevant one- and two-body effective field theory counterterms and enabling an extrapolation of the LQCD matrix elements to infinite volume. As examples, the scalar, tensor, and axial matrix elements are considered, in addition to the magnetic moments and the isovector longitudinal momentum fraction.

Entanglement entropy production in deep inelastic scattering

Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) samples a part of the wave function of a hadron in the vicinity of the light cone. Lipatov constructed a spin chain which describes the amplitude of DIS in leading logarithmic approximation. Kharzeev and Levin proposed the entanglement entropy as an observable in DIS [Phys. Rev. D 95, 114008 (2017)], and suggested a relation between the entanglement entropy and parton distributions. Here we represent the DIS process as a local quench in Lipatov’s spin chain and study the time evolution of the produced entanglement entropy. We show that the resulting entanglement entropy depends on time logarithmically, $\mathcal{S}(t) = 1/3 ln(t/τ)$ with $τ = 1/m for 1/m ≤ t ≤ (mx)^{–1}$, where m is the proton mass and $\textit{x}$ is the Bjorken $\textit{x}$. The central charge c of Lipatov’s spin chain is determined here to be $\textit{c}$ = 1; using the proposed relation between the entanglement entropy and parton distributions, this corresponds to the gluon structure function growing at small $\textit{x}$ as $xG(x) ~ 1/x^{1/3}$.

Quantum entanglement and the thermal hadron

This paper tests how effectively the bound states of strongly-interacting gauge theories are amenable to an emergent description as a thermal ensemble. This description can be derived from a conjectured minimum free-energy principle, with the entanglement entropy of two-parton subsystems playing the role of thermodynamic entropy. This allows us to calculate the ground-state hadron spectrum and wave function over a wide range of parton masses without solving the Schrödinger equation. We carry out this analysis for certain illustrative models in (1+1) dimensions and discuss prospects for higher dimensions.

Baryons and tetraquarks using instanton-induced interactions

We analyze some aspects of the perturbative and nonperturbative interactions in the composition of heavy quarkonia, heavy and light baryons ( c c c and u u u ones), as well as all charm tetraquarks ( c c c ¯ c ¯ ). Using the hyperspherical approximation and effective radial potentials (in six and nine dimensions, respectively) we derive their spectra and wave functions. In all of the cases, we focus on the splittings between the S -shell levels, which are remarkably insensitive to the quark masses, but proportional to the effective interaction potentials. We use the traditional Cornell-like potentials, and the nonperturbative instanton-induced static potentials, from correlators of two, three, and four Wilson lines, and find rather satisfactory description of spectra in all cases. Twist-3 generalized parton distribution for the proton from basis light-front quantization

We investigate the twist-3 generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the valence quarks of the proton within the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework. We first solve for the mass spectra and light-front waved functions (LFWFs) in the leading Fock sector using an effective Hamiltonian. Using the LFWFs we then calculate the twist-3 GPDs via the overlap representation. By taking the forward limit, we also get the twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs), and discuss their properties. Our prediction for the twist-3 scalar PDF agrees well with the CLAS experimental extractions.

Relativistic spin dynamics for vector mesons

We propose a relativistic theory for spin density matrices of vector mesons based on Kadanoff-Baym equations in the closed-time-path formalism. The theory puts the calculation of spin observables such as the spin density matrix element ρ 00 for vector mesons on a solid ground. Within the theory we formulate ρ 00 for ϕ mesons into a factorization form in separation of momentum and spacetime variables. We argue that the main contribution to ρ 00 at lower energies should be from the ϕ fields that can polarize the strange quark and antiquark in the same way as electromagnetic fields. The key observation is that there is correlation inside the ϕ meson wave function between the ϕ field that polarizes the strange quark and that polarizes the strange antiquark. This is reflected by the fact that the contributions to ρ 00 are all in squares of fields that are nonvanishing even if the fields may strongly fluctuate in spacetime. The fluctuation of strong force fields can be extracted from ρ 00 of unflavored vector mesons as links to fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics. Direct solution of Minkowski-space Bethe-Salpeter equation in the massive Wick-Cutkosky model

Here in order to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) in the Minkowski space, we first introduce the Nakanishi integral representations of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and the Bethe-Salpeter wave function. We then derive the explicit integral equations for the corresponding spectral functions from the BSE for states of two scalar particles bound by a scalar-particle exchange interaction, where the propagators of constituents are allowed to be fully dressed. These integral equations are subsequently solved numerically in the variation of the Wick-Cutkosky model with massive exchange particles, where an algorithm of adaptive mash grid is proposed. The equations and algorithm we develop here serve as the foundation of Minkowski-space formulation of BSE for bound states of fermions.

Photon topology

The topology of photons in vacuum is interesting because there are no photons with k = 0, creating a hole in momentum space. We show that while the set of all photons forms a trivial vector bundle $γ$ over this momentum space, the R and L photons form topologically nontrivial subbundles $γ±$ with first Chern numbers ∓2. In contrast, $γ$ has no linearly polarized subbundles, and there is no Chern number associated with linear polarizations. It is a known difficulty that the standard version of Wigner’s little group method produces singular representations of the Poincaré group for massless particles. By considering representations of the Poincaré group on vector bundles we obtain a version of Wigner’s little group method for massless particles which avoids these singularities. Here we show that any massless bundle representation of the Poincaré group can be canonically decomposed into irreducible bundle representations labeled by helicity, which in turn can be associated to smooth irreducible Hilbert space representations. This proves that the R and L photons are globally well defined as particles and that the photon wave function can be uniquely split into R and L components. This formalism offers a method of quantizing the electromagnetic field without invoking discontinuous polarization vectors as in the traditional scheme. We also demonstrate that the spin-Chern number of photons is not a purely topological quantity. Lastly, there has been an extended debate on whether photon angular momentum can be split into spin and orbital parts. Our work explains the precise issues that prevent this splitting. Photons do not admit a spin operator; instead, the angular momentum associated with photons’ internal degree of freedom is described by a helicity-induced subalgebra corresponding to the translational symmetry of $γ$.

Poles and poltergeists in e + e − → D D ¯ data

A recent report of e + e − → D D ¯ events by the BESIII collaboration suggests the presence of a structure R at 3900 MeV. We argue that this structure, called G ( 3900 ) in the past, is not in fact due to a new c c ¯ resonance but rather naturally emerges due to a combination of interference between nearby resonances and the opening of the D * D ¯ channel. We further find that the appearance of this structure does not require suppression because of a radial node in the ψ ( 4040 ) wave function, although a node improves fit quality. The measured e + e − coupling of ψ ( 4040 ) is found to be substantially smaller than previously estimated. In addition, we report new corrections to the measured cross section σ ( e + e − → D D ¯ ) at energies near ψ ( 3770 ) . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Gravitational form factors of charmonia

We investigate the gravitational form factors of charmonium. Our method is based on a Hamiltonian formalism on the light front known as basis light-front quantization. The charmonium mass spectrum and light-front wave functions were obtained from diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian that incorporates confinement from holographic QCD and one-gluon exchange interaction from light-front QCD. We proposed a quantum many-body approach to construct the hadronic matrix elements of the energy momentum tensor T + + and T + − , which are used to extract the gravitational form factors A ( Q 2 ) and D ( Q 2 ) . The obtained form factors satisfy the known constraints, e.g., the von Laue condition. From these quantities, we also extract the energy, pressure and light-front energy distributions of the system. We find that hadrons are multilayer systems. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Alternative to perturbative renormalization in ( 3 + 1 )-dimensional field theories

Perturbative renormalization provides the bedrock of understanding quantum field theories. In this work, I point out an alternative way of renormalizing quantum field theories, which is naturally encountered and well-known for the case of large N scalar field theories. In terms of bare parameters, this nonperturbative alternative renormalization differs qualitatively from its perturbative cousin: in the continuum limit, the bare coupling constant goes to zero instead of infinity, and there is no wave-function counterterm. Despite these differences, the resulting n -point functions of the theory are finite. I provide explicit results for alternative renormalization for the O(N) model and QCD with N f = 12 flavors in 3 + 1 dimensions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Pion gravitational form factors in the QCD instanton vacuum. I

The pion form factors of the QCD energy-momentum tensor (EMT) are studied in the instanton liquid model (ILM) of the QCD vacuum. In this approach, the breaking of conformal symmetry is encoded in the form of stronger-than-Poisson fluctuations in the number of instantons. For the trace of the EMT, it is shown that the gluonic trace anomaly term contributes half the pion mass, with the other half coming from the quark-mass-dependent σ term. The Q 2 dependence of the form factors is governed by glueball and scalar meson exchanges. For the EMT, the spin-0 (trace) and spin-2 (traceless rank-2 tensor) form factors are computed at next-to-leading order in the instanton density using effective quark operators. Relations between the gluon and quark contributions to the EMT form factors are derived. The form factors are also expressed in terms of the pion light-front wave functions in the ILM. The results at the low resolution scale of the inverse instanton size are evolved to higher scales using the renormalization group equation. The ILM results compare well with those of recent lattice QCD calculations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Gravitational form factors and mechanical properties of quarks in protons: A basis light-front quantization approach

We compute the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and study their applications for the description of the mechanical properties such as the pressure, shear force distributions, and the mechanical radius of the proton from its light-front wave functions (LFWFs) based on basis light-front quantization (BLFQ). The LFWFs of the proton are given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian that incorporates a three-dimensional confining potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling between the constituent quarks solved in the valence Fock sector. We find acceptable agreement between our BLFQ computations and the lattice QCD for the GFFs. Our D -term form factor also agrees well with the extracted data from the deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and the results of different phenomenological models. The distributions of pressures and shear forces are similar to those from different models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Universal rapidity scaling of entanglement entropy inside hadrons from conformal invariance

When a hadron is probed at high energy, a nontrivial quantum entanglement entropy inside the hadron emerges due to the lack of complete information about the hadron wave function extracted from this measurement. In the high-energy limit, the hadron becomes a maximally entangled state, with a linear dependence of entanglement entropy on rapidity, as has been found in a recent analysis based on parton description. In this paper, we use an effective conformal field theoretic description of hadrons on the light cone to show that the linear dependence of the entanglement entropy on rapidity found in parton description is a general consequence of approximate conformal invariance and does not depend on the assumption of weak coupling. Our result also provides further evidence for a duality between the parton and string descriptions of hadrons. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Mixing effects on spectroscopy and partonic observables of heavy mesons with logarithmic confining potential in a light-front quark model

Using the variational principle, we systematically investigate the mass spectra and wave functions of both 1⁢𝑆 and 2⁢𝑆 state heavy pseudoscalar (𝑃) and vector (𝑉) mesons within the light-front quark model. This approach incorporates a Coulomb plus logarithmic confinement potential to accurately describe the constituent quark and antiquark dynamics. Additionally, spin hyperfine interactions are introduced perturbatively to compute the masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The present analyses of the 1⁢𝑆 and 2⁢𝑆 states require the consideration of mixing between them to account for empirical constraints. These constraints include the mass gap Δ⁢𝑀 𝑃 >Δ⁢𝑀 𝑉 , where Δ⁢𝑀 𝑃⁡(𝑉) =𝑀$^{2⁢𝑆}_{𝑃⁡(𝑉)}$−𝑀$^{1⁢𝑆}_{𝑃⁡(𝑉)}$ and the hierarchy of the decay constants 𝑓 1⁢𝑆 >𝑓 2⁢𝑆 . We find the optimal value of the mixing angle to be 𝜃 =1⁢8°, significantly enhancing the consistency between our spectroscopic predictions and the experimental data compiled by the Particle Data Group. Furthermore, based on the predicted mass, the newly observed resonance 𝐵 𝐽⁡ (5840) could be assigned as a 2 1⁢ 𝑆 0 state in the 𝐵 meson family. The study also reports various pertinent observables, including twist-two distribution amplitudes, electromagnetic form factors, charge radii, 𝜉 moments, and transition form factors that are found to be consistent with both available lattice simulations and experimental data. In addition, our predicted branching ratios for the channels of 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 as well as rare decays of 𝐵 0 and 𝐵$^0_𝑠$ appear in accordance with experimental data.

Bridging hadronic and vacuum structure by heavy quarkonia

We discuss the central and, mostly, spin-dependent potentials in heavy quarkonia $\overline{b}$$b$,$\overline{c}$$c$, with two goals in mind. The first is phenomenological: using the splitting between the 1S and 2S pairs, as well as the 1P and 2P quartet masses, we obtain pertinent matrix elements of all these potentials. The second is theoretical: using standard wave functions, we compute these matrix elements, quantifying the perturbative, nonperturbative and “string” contributions. The model for nonperturbative effects is a “dense instanton liquid model,” in which the QCD vacuum is made mostly of (strongly color correlated) instanton-anti-instanton pairs or “molecules.” Their contributions are calculated via standard Wilson lines, with or without extra powers of gauge fields. We find a reasonable description of all central, spin-spin, and spin-orbit forces at distances 𝑟 = 0–0.7 fm, relevant for $\overline{b}$$b$ and $\overline{c}$$c$ quarkonia.
