Universal construction of black hole microstates

We refine and extend a recent construction of sets of black hole microstates with semiclassical interiors that span a Hilbert space of dimension e S , where S is the black hole entropy. We elaborate on the definition and properties of microstates in statistical and black hole mechanics. The gravitational description of microstates employs matter shells in the interior of the black hole, and we argue that in the limit where the shells are very heavy, the construction acquires universal validity. To this end, we show it for very wide classes of black holes; we first extend the construction to rotating and charged black holes, including extremal and near-extremal solutions, with or without supersymmetry, and we sketch how the construction of microstates can be embedded in string theory. We then describe how the approach can include general quantum corrections, near or far from extremality. For supersymmetric black holes, the microstates we construct differ from other recent constructions in that the interior excitations are not confined within the near-extremal throat. Testing lepton flavor universality at future Z factories

As one of the hypothetical principles in the Standard Model (SM), lepton flavor universality (LFU) should be tested with a precision as high as possible such that the physics violating this principle can be fully examined. The run of a Z factory at a future e + e − collider, such as the Circular Electron-Positron Collider or Future Circular Collider (electron/positron), provides a great opportunity to perform this task because of the large statistics and high reconstruction efficiencies for b hadrons at the Z pole. In this paper, we present a systematic study on the LFU test in future Z factories. The goal is threefold. First, we study the sensitivities of measuring the LFU-violating observables of b → c τ ν , i.e., R J / ψ , R D s , R D s * , and R Λ c , where τ decays muonically. For this purpose, we develop the strategies for event reconstruction, based on the track information significantly. Second, we explore the sensitivity robustness against detector performance and its potential improvement with the message of event shape or beyond the b -hadron decays. A picture is drawn on the variation of analysis sensitivities with the detector tracking resolution and soft photon detectability, and the impact of Fox-Wolfram moments is studied on the measurement of relevant flavor events. Finally, we interpret the projected sensitivities in the SM effective field theory, by combining the LFU tests of b → c τ ν and the measurements of b → s τ + τ − and b → s ν ¯ ν . We show that the limits on the LFU-violating energy scale can be pushed up to ∼ O ( 10 ) TeV for ≲ O ( 1 ) Wilson coefficients at Tera- Z . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

First constraints on a pixelated universe in light of DESI observations

Pixelated dark energy is a string theory scenario with a quantum mechanically stable cosmological constant. The number of pixels that make up the universe slowly increases, manifesting as a time-dependent source of dark energy. DESI has recently reported evidence for dynamical dark energy that fits within this framework. In light of this, we perform the first cosmological analysis of the pixelated model. We find that the simplest model where the pixel growth rate is constant is able to accommodate the data, providing a marginally better fit than Λ⁢ CDM; and we show that models where the pixel growth rate is increasing and of order the Hubble constant today could provide better fits. Our analysis helps to clarify the features of UV constructions of dark energy necessary to accommodate the data.

Universal dynamics of coarsening during polymer-polymer thin-film spinodal dewetting kinetics

The dewetting dynamics of a supported bilayer polymer thin film on a solid substrate is investigated using grazing incidence x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. We find that the top layer dewets via the spinodal mechanism. The kinetics of the dewetting is studied by monitoring the time evolution of the surface diffuse x-ray scattering intensity. We study the time evolution of fluctuations about the average surface structure by measuring the two-time x-ray intensity fluctuation correlation functions. Using these two-time correlation functions we quantify the crossover from early-time diffusive dynamics to hydrodynamics. The early diffusive regime satisfies dynamic universality. The two-time correlation functions also quantify the onset of hydrodynamic effects. The hydrodynamic regime is observed during the spinodal dewetting process as these interactions are not screened.

Universality class for loopless invasion percolation models and a percolation avalanche burst model for hydraulic fracturing

Invasion percolation is a model that was originally proposed to describe growing networks of fractures. In this work, we describe a loopless algorithm on random lattices, coupled with an avalanche-based model for bursts. The model reproduces the characteristic b-value seismicity and spatial distribution of bursts consistent with earthquakes resulting from hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”). We test models for both site invasion percolation and bond invasion percolation. These have differences on the scale of site and bond lengths l. But since the networks are characterized by their large-scale behavior, l << L, we find small differences between scaling exponents. Though data may not differentiate between models, our results suggest that both models belong to different universality classes.

Fast and Universal Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory Algorithm for Warm Dense Matter to Hot Dense Plasma

Understanding many processes, e.g., fusion experiments, planetary interiors, and dwarf stars, depends strongly on microscopic physics modeling of warm dense matter and hot dense plasma. This complex state of matter consists of a transient mixture of degenerate and nearly free electrons, molecules, and ions. This regime challenges both experiment and analytical modeling, necessitating predictive ab initio atomistic computation, typically based on quantum mechanical Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT). However, cubic computational scaling with temperature and system size prohibits the use of DFT through much of the warm dense matter regime. A recently developed stochastic approach to KS-DFT can be used at high temperatures, with the exact same accuracy as the deterministic approach, but the stochastic error can converge slowly and it remains expensive for intermediate temperatures (< 50 eV). Here we have developed a universal mixed stochastic-deterministic algorithm for DFT at any temperature. This approach leverages the physics of KS-DFT to seamlessly integrate the best aspects of these different approaches. We demonstrate that this method significantly accelerated self-consistent field calculations for temperatures from 3 to 50 eV, while producing stable molecular dynamics and accurate diffusion coefficients.

Universal Location of the Yang-Lee Edge Singularity in O( N ) Theories

We determine a previously unknown universal quantity, the location of the Yang-Lee edge singularity for the O(N) theories in a wide range of N and various dimensions. At large N, we reproduce the N→∞ analytical result on the location of the singularity and, additionally, we obtain the mean-field result for the location in d=4 dimensions. In order to capture the nonperturbative physics for arbitrary N, d and complex-valued external fields, we use the functional renormalization group approach.

Dark Photon Oscillations in Our Inhomogeneous Universe

A dark photon kinetically mixing with the ordinary photon represents one of the simplest viable extensions to the standard model, and would induce oscillations with observable imprints on cosmology. Oscillations are resonantly enhanced if the dark photon mass equals the ordinary photon plasma mass, which tracks the free electron number density. Previous studies have assumed a homogeneous Universe; in this Letter, we introduce for the first time an analytic formalism for treating resonant oscillations in the presence of inhomogeneities of the photon plasma mass. We apply our formalism to determine constraints from cosmic microwave background photons oscillating into dark photons, and from heating of the primordial plasma due to dark photon dark matter converting into low-energy photons. Including the effect of inhomogeneities demonstrates that prior homogeneous constraints are not conservative, and simultaneously extends current experimental limits into a vast new parameter space.

Criticality of Two-Dimensional Disordered Dirac Fermions in the Unitary Class and Universality of the Integer Quantum Hall Transition

Two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions are a central paradigm of modern condensed matter physics, describing low-energy excitations in graphene, in certain classes of superconductors, and on surfaces of 3D topological insulators. At zero energy E=0, Dirac fermions with mass m are band insulators, with the Chern number jumping by unity at m=0. This observation lead Ludwig et al. [Phys. Rev. B 50, 7526 (1994)PRBMDO0163-182910.1103/PhysRevB.50.7526] to conjecture that the transition in 2D disordered Dirac fermions (DDF) and the integer quantum Hall transition (IQHT) are controlled by the same fixed point and possess the same universal critical properties. Given the far-reaching implications for the emerging field of the quantum anomalous Hall effect, modern condensed matter physics, and our general understanding of disordered critical points, it is surprising that this conjecture has never been tested numerically. In this work, we report the results of extensive numerics on the phase diagram and criticality of 2D DDF in the unitary class. We find a critical line at m=0, with an energy-dependent localization length exponent. At large energies, our results for the DDF are consistent with state-of-the-art numerical results ν IQH =2.56-2.62 from models of the IQHT. At E=0, however, we obtain ν 0 =2.30-2.36 incompatible with ν IQH . This result challenges conjectured relations between different models of the IQHT, and several interpretations are discussed.

Universal Tripartite Entanglement in One-Dimensional Many-Body Systems

Motivated by conjectures in holography relating the entanglement of purification and reflected entropy to the entanglement wedge cross section, we introduce two related non-negative measures of tripartite entanglement g and h. We prove structure theorems which show that states with nonzero g or h have nontrivial tripartite entanglement. We then establish that in one dimension these tripartite entanglement measures are universal quantities that depend only on the emergent low-energy theory. For a gapped system, we argue that either g≠0 and h=0 or g=h=0, depending on whether the ground state has long-range order. For a critical system, we develop a numerical algorithm for computing g and h from a lattice model. We compute g and h for various CFTs and show that h depends only on the central charge whereas g depends on the whole operator content.

Universal Properties of Weakly Bound Two-Neutron Halo Nuclei

We construct an effective field theory of a two-neutron halo nucleus in the limit where the two-neutron separation energy B and the neutron-neutron two-body virtual energy ε n are smaller than any other energy scale in the problem, but the scattering between the core and a single neutron is not fine-tuned, and the Efimov effect does not operate. The theory has one dimensionless coupling which formally runs to a Landau pole in the ultraviolet. We show that many properties of the system are universal in the double fine-tuning limit. The ratio of the mean-square matter radius and charge radius is found to be < r$^{2}_{m}$ > / < r$^{2}_{c}$ > = Af(ε n /B), where A is the mass number of the core and f is a function of the ratio ε n / B which we find explicitly. In particular, when B >> ε n , < r$^{2}_{m}$ > / < r$^{2}_{c}$ > = 2/3 A . Here, the shape of the E1 dipole strength function also depends only on the ratio ε n /B and is derived in explicit analytic form. We estimate that for the 22 C nucleus higher-order corrections to our theory are of the order of 20% or less if the two-neutron separation energy is less than 100 keV and the s-wave scattering length between a neutron and a 20 C nucleus is less than 2.8 fm.

Universal Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Dynamics in Integrable Quantum Systems

Although the Bethe ansatz solution of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model dates back nearly a century, the anomalous nature of its high-temperature transport dynamics has only recently been uncovered. Indeed, numerical and experimental observations have demonstrated that spin transport in this paradigmatic model falls into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. This has inspired the significantly stronger conjecture that KPZ dynamics, in fact, occur in all integrable spin chains with non-Abelian symmetry. Here, in this letter, we provide extensive numerical evidence affirming this conjecture. Moreover, we observe that KPZ transport is even more generic, arising in both supersymmetric and periodically driven models. Motivated by recent advances in the realization of SU(N)-symmetric spin models in alkaline-earth-based optical lattice experiments, we propose and analyze a protocol to directly investigate the KPZ scaling function in such systems.

Universal van der Waals Force between Heavy Polarons in Superfluids

Here, we investigate the long-range behavior of the induced Casimir interaction between two spinless heavy impurities, or polarons, in superfluid cold atomic gases. With the help of effective field theory (EFT) of a Galilean invariant superfluid, we show that the induced impurity-impurity potential at long distance universally shows a relativistic van der Waals-like attraction (~1/r 7 ) resulting from the exchange of two superfluid phonons. We also clarify finite temperature effects from the same two-phonon exchange process. The temperature $\mathrm{T}$ introduces the additional length scale c s /$\mathrm{T}$ with the speed of sound c s . Leading corrections at finite temperature scale as $\mathrm{T}$ 6 /r for distances r$\ll$c s /$\mathrm{T}$ smaller than the thermal length. For larger distances the potential shows a nonrelativistic van der Waals behavior (~$\mathrm{T}$/r 6 ) instead of the relativistic one. Our EFT formulation applies not only to weakly coupled Bose or Fermi superfluids but also to those composed of strongly correlated unitary fermions with a weakly coupled impurity. The sound velocity controls the magnitude of the van der Waals potential, which we evaluate for the fermionic superfluid in the BCS-BEC crossover.

Universal Maximum Strength of Solid Metals and Alloys

As described here, interstitial electron density ρ o is offered as a direct metric for maximum strength in metals, arising from universal properties derived from an electron-gas – ρ o sets the exchange-correlation parameter r s in density-functional theory (DFT). It holds also for maximum shear strength τ max in polycrystals [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 125501]. Elastic moduli and τ max for polycrystalline (amorphous) metals are linear with ρ o and melting T m (glass-transition T g ) temperature. ρ o or r s , even with rule-of-mixture estimate, predicts relative strength for rapid, reliable selection of high-strength alloys with ductility, as confirmed for elements to steels to complex solid-solutions, and validated experimentally.

Observation of D s + → η ′ μ + ν μ , Precision Test of Lepton Flavor Universality with D s + → η ( ′ ) l + ν l , and First Measurements of D s + → η ( ′ ) μ + ν μ Decay Dynamics

By analyzing 7.33 fb − 1 of e + e − annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the observation of the semileptonic decay D s + → η ′ μ + ν μ , with a statistical significance larger than 10 σ , and the measurements of the D s + → η μ + ν μ and D s + → η ′ μ + ν μ decay dynamics for the first time. The branching fractions of D s + → η μ + ν μ and D s + → η ′ μ + ν μ are determined to be ( 2.235 ± 0.05 1 stat ± 0.05 2 syst ) % and ( 0.801 ± 0.05 5 stat ± 0.02 8 syst ) % , respectively, with precision improved by factors of 6.0 and 6.6 compared to the previous best measurements. Combined with the results for the decays D s + → η e + ν e and D s + → η ′ e + ν e , the ratios of the decay widths are examined both inclusively and in several ℓ + ν ℓ four-momentum transfer ranges. No evidence for lepton flavor universality violation is found within the current statistics. The products of the hadronic form factors f + , 0 η ( ′ ) ( 0 ) and the c → s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element | V c s | are determined. The results based on the two-parameter series expansion are f + , 0 η ( 0 ) | V c s | = 0.452 ± 0.01 0 stat ± 0.00 7 syst and f + , 0 η ′ ( 0 ) | V c s | = 0.504 ± 0.03 7 stat ± 0.01 2 syst , which help to constrain present models on f + , 0 η ( ′ ) ( 0 ) . The forward-backward asymmetries are determined to be ⟨ A FB η ⟩ = − 0.059 ± 0.03 1 stat ± 0.00 5 syst and ⟨ A FB η ′ ⟩ = − 0.064 ± 0.07 9 stat ± 0.00 6 syst for the first time, which are consistent with the theoretical calculation. Transversity Distributions and Tensor Charges of the Nucleon: Extraction from Dihadron Production and Their Universal Nature

We perform the first global quantum chromodynamics (QCD) analysis of dihadron production for a comprehensive set of data in electron-positron annihilation, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions, from which we extract simultaneously the transversity distributions of the nucleon and π + π − dihadron fragmentation functions. We incorporate in our fits known theoretical constraints on transversity, namely, its small- x asymptotic behavior and the Soffer bound. We furthermore show that lattice-QCD results for the tensor charges can be successfully included in the analysis. This resolves the previously reported incompatibility between the tensor charges extracted from dihadron production data and lattice QCD. We also find agreement with results for the transversity and tensor charges obtained from measurements on single-hadron production. Overall, our work demonstrates for the first time the universal nature of all available information for the transversity distributions and the tensor charges of the nucleon. Measurement of Angular Coefficients of B ¯ → D * ℓ ν ¯ ℓ : Implications for | V c b | and Tests of Lepton Flavor Universality

We measure the complete set of angular coefficients J i for exclusive B ¯ → D * ℓ ν ¯ ℓ decays ( ℓ = e , μ ). Our analysis uses the full 711 fb − 1 Belle dataset with hadronic tag-side reconstruction. The results allow us to extract the form factors describing the B ¯ → D * transition and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element | V cb | . Using recent lattice QCD calculations for the hadronic form factors, we find | V cb | = ( 40.7 ± 0.7 ) × 10 − 3 using the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed parametrization, compatible with determinations from inclusive semileptonic decays. We search for lepton flavor universality violation as a function of the hadronic recoil parameter w and investigate the differences of the electron and muon angular distributions. We find no deviation from standard model expectations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Universal Spreading of Conditional Mutual Information in Noisy Random Circuits

For this work, we study the evolution of conditional mutual information (CMI) in generic open quantum systems, focusing on one-dimensional random circuits with interspersed local noise. Unlike in noiseless circuits, where CMI spreads linearly while being bounded by the light cone, we find that noisy random circuits with an error rate 𝑝 exhibit superlinear propagation of CMI, which diverges far beyond the light cone at a critical circuit depth 𝑡 𝑐 ∝ 𝑝 −1 . We demonstrate that the underlying mechanism for such rapid spreading is the combined effect of local noise and a scrambling unitary, which selectively removes short-range correlations while preserving long-range correlations. To analytically capture the dynamics of CMI in noisy random circuits, we introduce a coarse-graining method, and we validate our theoretical results through numerical simulations. Furthermore, we identify a universal scaling law governing the spreading of CMI.
