Shuttle cryogenics supply system. Optimization study. Volume 5 B-2, part 1: Appendix programmers manual for math model

An appendix to the programmers manual for the mathematical model pertaining to the design of cryogenic supply systems for spacecraft is presented. The program listing was produced using the EXEC-8 LISTALL processor which lists a file in alphabetical order. Since the processor does not differentiate between subroutines, functions, and procedure definition processors, each subprogram has been relabeled to clearly identify the type of symbolic listing.

Determination of the geometrical factor and of the spatial distributions of particles for a cosmic ray telescope using a Monte Carlo approach

A program is presented which uses a Monte Carlo technique to compute the geometrical factor of a detector, and the spatial and angular distributions of simulated particles at designated layers within the detector. As the program is written, each layer is assumed to be rectangular, parallel to every other layer with its edges parallel to the edges of every other layer, and centered about a common axis. This program is written in Fortran 4 for the IBM 360 computers and is currently being run under the Fortran 4 (h) compiler. Same features such as the subroutine ERRSET, RANDU, and REMTIM and the type declarations REAL *8 and LOGICAL *1 may need to be changed for use with a different computer system. The use of input data cards, and a sample data set are presented. Lists of the symbol definition, card images of the FORTRAN object deck and subroutines are included along with a flow diagram.

Head-up displays for STOL visual approaches

A simulation study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a simple head-up display in improving glide-slope tracking performance during steep visual approaches in a STOL aircraft. The head-up display featured an attitude-stabilized horizon bar and glide-slope reference bar parallel to and 7.5 deg below the horizon bar. On some approaches a flight-path marker symbol showing the projected ground impact point was also displayed. Half of the approaches were flown in a conventional mode in which the pilot changed pitch attitude to correct for height errors. The remaining approaches were flown in a direct-lift mode in which the pilot modulated thrust to change the flight-path angle without pitching the aircraft.

Transient analysis of phase-locked tracking systems in the presence of noise.

This paper is concerned with the problem of obtaining time-dependent solutions to a class of Fokker-Planck equations that arise in the analysis and synthesis of a variety of first-order synchronization systems employing the phase-lock principle. These include the classical sinusoidal phase-locked loop, squaring and Costas loops, data-aided loops, hybrid loops, various symbol synchronizer mechanizations, and tunnel-diode oscillators. By analyzing the spectral properties of the associated time-dependent Fokker-Planck boundary value problem, eigenfunction expansions of the reduced modulo-2-pi phase-error-transition probability-density function are developed for a class of first-order synchronization systems.

Flight director design for a STOL aircraft.

The study described here was intended to explore some ways of giving the pilot the information necessary to perform as well as an autopilot. A fixed-base flight simulator was built to study pilot/director/aircraft performance. Instrument rated pilots used the different director-displays in an approach down to touchdown, including a flare and decrab maneuver. Two well established areas of control theory are combined in the design of the cockpit display. Optimal control theory and the theory of manual control are used to find the feedback gains required to drive the display symbols. Conclusions based on the simulator are presented. The results show that the director display developed in the work provides more than adequate information for simulated landing in highly turbulent conditions.

Anti-multipath digital signal detector

Detector operates in conjunction with radio frequency portion of receiver to detect digital signals transmitted in known modulation formats. Signal is constructed by assigning known and distinct modulation waveforms to sequence of message symbols. It reconstructs transmitted digital sequence with minimum probability that any reconstructed digit will be in error.

Fabrication and properties of gallium phosphide variable colour displays

The unique properties of single-junction gallium phosphide devices incorporating both red and green radiative recombination centers were investigated in application to the fabrication of monolithic 5 x 7 displays capable of displaying symbolic and alphanumeric information in a multicolor format. A number of potentially suitable material preparation techniques were evaluated in terms of both material properties and device performance. Optimum results were obtained for double liquid-phase-epitaxial process in which an open-tube dipping technique was used for n-layer growth and a sealed tipping procedure for subsequent p-layer growth. It was demonstrated that to prepare devices exhibiting a satisfactory range of dominant wavelengths which can be perceived as distinct emission colors extending from the red through green region of the visible spectrum involves a compromise between the material properties necessary for efficient red emission and those considered optimum for efficient green emission.

Augmentation of machine structure to improve its diagnosability

Two methods of augmenting the structure of a sequential machine so that it is diagnosable are presented. The checkable (checking sequences) and repeated symbol distinguishing sequences (RDS) are discussed. It was found that as few as twice the number of outputs of the given machine is sufficient for constructing a state-output augmentation with RDS. Techniques for minimizing the number of states in resolving convergences and in resolving equivalent and nonreduced cycles are developed.

Ground Operations Aerospace Language (GOAL). Volume 3: Data bank

The GOAL (Ground Operations Aerospace Language) test programming language was developed for use in ground checkout operations in a space vehicle launch environment. To insure compatibility with a maximum number of applications, a systematic and error-free method of referencing command/response (analog and digital) hardware measurements is a principle feature of the language. Central to the concept of requiring the test language to be independent of launch complex equipment and terminology is that of addressing measurements via symbolic names that have meaning directly in the hardware units being tested. To form the link from test program through test system interfaces to the units being tested the concept of a data bank has been introduced. The data bank is actually a large cross-reference table that provides pertinent hardware data such as interface unit addresses, data bus routings, or any other system values required to locate and access measurements.

Simulation study of communication link for Pioneer Saturn/Uranus atmospheric entry probe

A digital simulation is presented for a candidate modem in a modeled atmospheric scintillation environment with Doppler, Doppler rate, and signal attenuation typical of the radio link conditions for an outer planets atmospheric entry probe. The results indicate that the signal acquisition characteristics and the channel error rate are acceptable for the system requirements of the radio link. The simulation also outputs data for calculating other error statistics and a quantized symbol stream from which error correction decoding can be analyzed.

Display requirements for the final approach and landing phase of an RPV mission

A two part investigation was conducted to determine the display requirements for the final approach and landing phase of a remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) mission, and to assess the relative merits of several possible display configurations. The objective of the first part of the investigation was to obtain subjective assessments of several display configurations, and to select the most promising display concepts for subsequent evaluation in terms of performance measures. A basic display consisting of a perspective image of terrain and runway, a horizon bar and an aircraft symbol was used, and guidance symbology was added to the basic displaying selected state variables. Initial results suggested that as guidance symbology is added to the basic display, pilot acceptance tends to increase. A point of diminishing returns is eventually reached, however, when additional information produces too much clutter, and makes it difficult for the pilot to process the displayed information.

Contribution to the theory of tidal oscillations of an elastic earth. External tidal potential

The differential equations of the tidal oscillations of the earth were established under the assumption that the interior of the earth is laterally inhomogeneous. The theory was developed using vectorial and dyadic symbolism to shorten the exposition and to reduce the differential equations to a symmetric form convenient for programming and for numerical integration. The formation of tidal buldges on the surfaces of discontinuity and the changes in the internal density produce small periodic variations in the exterior geopotential which are reflected in the motion of artificial satellites. The analoques of Love elastic parameters in the expansion of exterior tidal potential reflect the asymmetric and inhomogeneous structure of the interior of the earth.

The effect of simulator dynamics on pilot response

The effects of visual display dynamics on the altitude tracking performance of a subject in a fixed base flight simulator are considered. The subject, flying the linearized longitudinal equations of motion, attempts to maintain the same altitude as two airplanes positioned three hundred feet ahead, as in level formation flying. The horizon together with the two leading aircraft are represented symbolically on a CRT display. The subject's aircraft is disturbed by atmospheric turbulence. The data indicate a relationship between the bandwidth of the display dynamics and the short period characteristics of the simulated airplane. For an airplane with a relatively fast pitch response the presence of altitude display dynamics, with a bandwidth as high as five times the short period natural frequency, causes significant degradation of altitude tracking performance.

Telecommunication systems engineering

Telecommunication network concepts are discussed together with carrier-tracking loops employing the phase-lock principle, phase and Doppler measurements in two-way phase-coherent tracking systems, range measurements by phase-coherent techniques, and questions of phase-coherent detection with perfect reference signals and with noisy reference signals. The design of one-way and two-way phase-coherent communication systems is considered, giving attention to the optimal design of single-channel systems, the design of two-channel systems, and the design of multichannel systems. Other topics explored include the design and the performance of phase-coherent systems preceded by band-pass limiters, symbol synchronization and its effects on data detection, noncoherent communication over the Gaussian channel, and tracking loops with improved performance.

Optimum frame synchronization for biorthogonally coded data

Many recent American unmanned planetary probes have used biorthogonally coded spacecraft-to-earth telemetry links. An examination of the frame-synchronization (sync) techniques employed on these missions revealed that they were not specifically designed for coded data. This led to a consideration of the optimum frame-sync problem for biorthogonally coded data received over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and decoded prior to sync acquisition. A frame-sync algorithm for biorthogonally coded data based on a super-symbol distance rule is proposed, along with a corresponding selection criterion for the sync sequence. It is argued heuristically that this approach is optimum with regard to minimizing the probability of false synchronization.
