Low-noise microwave receiving systems in a worldwide network of large antennas.

The Deep-Space Network (DSN) consists of a worldwide network of 26- and 64-m antennas spaced approximately 120 deg around the world. The DSN is a precision communications system designed to communicate with and control unmanned spacecraft traveling at interplanetary ranges. Recent developments in the performance and evaluation of the antennas and maser receivers are discussed, and developments which have contributed to radio-science projects, such as planetary radar astronomy, very-long-baseline interferometry, pulsar, and other astronomical observations are described. It is also shown how these radio-science measurements have been used to evaluate the performance of the antenna-receiver systems.

Network Information Management Subsystem

The Deep Space Network is implementing a distributed data base management system in which the data are shared among several applications and the host machines are not totally dedicated to a particular application. Since the data and resources are to be shared, the equipment must be operated carefully so that the resources are shared equitably. The current status of the project is discussed and policies, roles, and guidelines are recommended for the organizations involved in the project.

Operations automation using temporal dependency networks

Precalibration activities for the Deep Space Network are time- and work force-intensive. Significant gains in availability and efficiency could be realized by intelligently incorporating automation techniques. An approach is presented to automation based on the use of Temporal Dependency Networks (TDNs). A TDN represents an activity by breaking it down into its component pieces and formalizing the precedence and other constraints associated with lower level activities. The representations are described which are used to implement a TDN and the underlying system architecture needed to support its use. The commercial applications of this technique are numerous. It has potential for application in any system which requires real-time, system-level control, and accurate monitoring of health, status, and configuration in an asynchronous environment.

Communications in Space

This paper provides an overview of the imaging results of the JPL/NASA unmanned exploration missions to all the planets of the solar system (except Pluto) as well as the telecommunications capability which was developed to enable/support those missions. the telecommunications link improvements will be described to show increases in data rate capability resulting from the addition of ground antenna aperture, transmitter power, coding techniques, lower noise receivers, etc. This paper will also describe (briefly) the current and future flight missions. The presentation will be supported by a significant number of pictures taken during the planetary encounters as well as pictures of the Deep Space Network antennas.
