Structural transition and possible pressure-induced superconductivity in a suboxide La 5 Pb 3 O

Here, in this study, we report a structural phase transition and its interplay with superconductivity in the suboxide La 5⁢ Pb 3 ⁢O. Upon cooling through 𝑇 𝑡 = 225K, La 5⁢ Pb 3⁢ O transforms from a high-temperature 𝐼⁢4/mcm to a low-temperature 𝑃⁢4/ncc structure in which La-Pb dimerization along the 𝑐 axis occurs. This transition is accompanied by anomalies in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity and specific heat. High-pressure electrical transport measurements reveal that hydrostatic pressure suppresses the structural transition and possibly induces superconductivity with a maximum superconducting temperature of 10 K. Density functional theory calculations show minimal changes in the electronic density of states and no gap opening at 𝐸 𝐹 across 𝑇 𝑡 , suggesting that the transition is driven by bonding effects rather than Fermi surface instability. These findings establish La 5⁢ Pb 3 ⁢O as a promising platform for exploring the interplay between weak structural transitions and superconductivity.

Charge density wave with anomalous temperature dependence in UPt 2 Si 2

Using single-crystal neutron and x-ray diffraction, we discovered a charge density wave (CDW) below 320 K, which accounts for the long-sought origin of the heat capacity and resistivity anomalies in UPt 2 Si 2 . The modulation wave vector, Q mod , is intriguingly similar to the incommensurate wave vector of URu 2 Si 2 . Q mod shows an unusual temperature dependence, shifting from commensurate to incommensurate position upon cooling and becoming locked at aproximately (0.42 0 0) near 180 K. Furthermore, bulk measurements indicate a crossover toward a correlated coherent state around the same temperature, suggesting an interplay between the CDW and Kondo-lattice-like coherence before coexisting antiferromagnetic order sets in at T N =35 Κ.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point in pressurized La 5 Co 2 Ge 3

We present the pressure-temperature phase diagram La 5 Co 2 Ge 3 up to ~ 5 GPa, which was constructed from magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements. At ambient pressure, La 5 Co 2 Ge 3 is an itinerant ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C ~ 4 K. Upon increasing pressure up to ~ 1.7 GPa, T C is suppressed down to ~ 3 K. Upon further increasing pressure, our results suggest that La 5 Co 2 Ge 3 enters a different low-temperature ground state. The corresponding transition temperature T* has a nonmonotonic pressure dependence up to ~ 5 GPa. Our results demonstrate that the ferromagnetic quantum critical point in La 5 Co 2 Ge 3 is avoided by the appearance of a different, likely magnetically ordered, state that has an antiferromagnetic component.

Temperature-induced valence-state transition in double perovskite Ba 2 - x Sr x TbIrO 6

In this paper, a temperature-induced valence-state transition is studied in a narrow composition range 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.375 of Ba 2 - x Sr x TbIrO 6 by means of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements. The valence-state transition involves an electron transfer between Tb and Ir leading to the valence-state change between Tb 3 + / Ir 5 + and Tb 4 + / Ir 4 + phases. This first-order transition has a dramatic effect on the lattice, transport properties, and the long-range magnetic order at low temperatures for both Tb and Ir ions. Ir 5 + ion has an electronic configuration of 5 d 4 ( J eff = 0 ), which is expected to be nonmagnetic. In contrast, Ir 4 + ion with a configuration of 5 d 5 ( J eff = 1/2) favors a long-range magnetic order. For x = 0.1 with Tb 3 + / Ir 5 + configuration to the lowest temperature (2 K) investigated in this paper, a spin-glass behavior is observed around 5 K indicating Ir 5 + ( J eff = 0 ) ions act as a spacer reducing the magnetic interactions between Tb 3 + ions. For x = 0.5 with Tb 4 + / Ir 4 + configuration below the highest temperature 400 K of this paper, a long-range antiferromagnetic order at T N = 40 K is observed highlighting the importance of Ir 4 + ( J eff = 1/2) ions in promoting the long-range magnetic order of both Tb and Ir ions. For 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.375, a temperature-induced valence-state transition from high-temperature Tb 3 + / Ir 5 + phase to low-temperature Tb 4 + / Ir 4 + phase occurs in the temperature range 180 K ≤ T ≤ 325 K and the transition temperature increases with x . The compositional dependence demonstrates the ability to tune the the valence state for a critical region of x that leads to a concurrent change in magnetism and structure. Furthermore, this tuning ability could be employed with suitable strain in thin films to act as a switch as the magnetism is manipulated.

Single crystal growth and thermoelectric properties of Nowotny chimney-ladder compound Fe 2 Ge 3

Fe 2 Ge 3 with an incommensurate Nowotny chimney-ladder (NCL) structure is a promising material for thermoelectric applications due to its low thermal conductivity. Previous experimental studies on Fe 2 Ge 3 have mainly focused on polycrystalline samples, resulting in a limited understanding of the material's intrinsic thermoelectric properties and the underlying causes of its low thermal conductivity. Here we report the synthesis and thermoelectric properties of single crystalline Fe 2 Ge 3 . Millimeter-sized Fe 2 Ge 3 single crystals grown by the chemical vapor transport method enable the study of the intrinsic thermoelectric properties. The Seebeck coefficient of Fe 2 Ge 3 is negative and its magnitude increases linearly with temperature, showing a degenerate n-type semiconductor behavior. Analysis of the electrical resistivity and specific heat data indicates the existence of an Einstein mode with a characteristic temperature of about 60 K, suggesting the presence of low-energy optical phonons. Further, the thermal conductivity of Fe 2 Ge 3 along the c axis is as low as 1.9Wm -1 K -1 at 300 K and exhibits a nearly temperature-independent characteristic, which is distinct from the previous theoretical calculations with a stronger temperature dependence. The low thermal conductivity may be attributed to the scattering of acoustic phonons by low-energy optical modes and the presence of non-extended diffuson modes, as reported in another NCL compound, MnSi 1.74 . This study provides valuable insights into the electrical and thermal properties of Fe 2 Ge 3 , which can open up possibilities for future advances in thermoelectric applications.

Fill Factor Loss in Fielded Photovoltaic Modules Due to Metallization Failures, Characterized by Luminescence and Thermal Imaging

Understanding the causes of photovoltaic module failure in the field can be achieved using spatially-resolved imaging tools in combination with current-voltage (IV) characterization. We evaluate 23 field-degraded modules by comparing their IV characteristics with module images obtained by electroluminescence, photoluminescence, UV-fluorescence, and dark lock-in thermography. We identify primarily metallization failures (metallization series resistance, solder point heating, broken fingers, disrupted interconnects) in these modules that has led to a severe drop in the fill factor and up to 35% power loss over only 2 years of deployment.

EIC Hadron Beamline Vacuum Studies

Ninety percent of the EIC hadron ring vacuum chamber consists of cold-bore sections running through and interconnecting 4.55 K RHIC superconducting (SC) magnets. The EIC operating specification requires shorter bunches and 3x higher intensity beams which are not appropriate for the present RHIC stainless steel cold-bore beam tube. The intensity and emittance of the hadron beams will degrade due to interactions with residual gas or vacuum instabilities arising from the expected resistive-wall (RW) heating, electron clouds, and beam-induced desorption mechanisms. Without strategies to limit RW heating, major cryogenic system modifications are needed to prevent SC magnet quenches. The SC magnet cold-bore beam tubes will be equipped with a high RRR copper-clad stainless steel screen to significantly reduce RW heating and so the effect on the SC magnet cryogenic heat load and temperature. A thin amorphous carbon film applied to the beam-facing copper surface will suppress electron cloud formation. This paper discusses the vacuum requirements imposed by the EIC hadron beams and the plans to achieve the necessary vacuum and thermal stability that ensure acceptable beam quality and lifetime.

Characterizing electrical demand and load diversity of low-power water and space heating appliances in US homes

Home renovation and remodeling projects can involve costly and time consuming electrical infrastructure upgrades at the household level. From the grid perspective they also lead to costly replacement of local infrastructure, such as transformers, and can add stress to the grid at peak times. The emergence of innovative, power-efficient household appliances offers a way to minimize these problems. These appliances are designed for lower power consumption, simplifying installation through standard plug-in connections, reducing the need for new electric circuits/panels/service, and minimizing the peak power demand for the home. Key examples include low-power heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) and cold climate window heat pumps that operate on standard 120V outlets. To assess the real-world impact of these solutions, we compiled and analyzed power metering data from several US field studies. This data provides insights into the effects on peak power demand of selecting lower-power appliances. Our analysis focuses on several key metrics, including the maximum power demand of individual appliances, their operational runtime, continuous operation and load diversity. While individual low-power 120V space and water heating appliances offer significant peak demand reductions compared to 240V heat pump or resistance alternatives, their longer runtimes might increase the likelihood of operation during whole-dwelling peak events, albeit at lower power levels.

Carbide Formation in Refractory Mo 15 Nb 20 Re 15 Ta 30 W 20 Alloy under a Combined High-Pressure and High-Temperature Condition

In this work, the formation of carbide with the concertation of carbon at 0.1 at.% in refractory high-entropy alloy (RHEA) Mo 15 Nb 20 Re 15 Ta 30 W 20 was studied under both ambient and high-pressure high-temperature conditions. The x-ray diffraction of dilute carbon (C)-doped RHEA under ambient pressure showed that the phases and lattice constant of RHEA were not influenced by the addition of 0.1 at.% C. In contrast, C-doped RHEA showed unexpected phase formation and transformation under combined high-pressure and high-temperature conditions by resistively employing the heated diamond anvil cell (DAC) technique. The new FCC_L1 2 phase appeared at 6 GPa and 809 °C and preserved the ambient temperature and pressure. High-pressure and high-temperature promoted the formation of carbides Ta 3 C and Nb 3 C, which are stable and may further improve the mechanical performance of the dilute C-doped alloy Mo 15 Nb 20 Re 15 Ta 30 W 20 .

A Field Study of Nonintrusive Load Monitoring Devices and Implications for Load Disaggregation

Evaluations of nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) algorithms and technologies have mostly occurred in constrained, artificial environments. However, few field evaluations of NILM products have taken place in actual buildings under normal operating conditions. This paper describes a field evaluation of a state-of-the-art NILM product, tested in eight homes. The match rate metric—a technique recommended by a technical advisory group—was used to measure the NILM’s success in identifying specific loads and the accuracy of the energy consumption estimates. A performance assessment protocol was also developed to address common issues with NILM mislabeling and ground-truth comparisons that have not been sufficiently addressed in past evaluations. The NILM product’s estimates were compared to the submetered consumption of eight major appliances. Overall, the product had good performance in disaggregating the energy consumption of the electric water heaters, which included both electric resistance and heat-pump water heaters, but only a fair accuracy with refrigerators, dryers, and air conditioners. The performance was poor for cooking equipment, furnace fans, clothes washers, and dishwashers. Moreover, the product was often unable to detect major loads in homes. Typically, two or more appliances were not detected in a home. At least two dryers, furnace fans, and air conditioners went undetected across the eight homes. On the other hand, the dishwasher was detected in all homes where available or monitored. The key findings were qualitatively compared to those of past field evaluations. Potential areas for improvement in NILM product performance were determined along with areas where complementary technologies may be able to aid in load-disaggregation applications.

Fuel cell on-site integrated energy system parametric analysis of a residential complex

The use of phosphoric acid fuel cell powerplant to provide all the electricity required by an 81-unit garden apartment complex is studied. Byproduct heat is recovered and provides some of the heat required by the complex. The onsite integrated energy system contains energy conversion equipment including combinations of compression and absorption chillers, heat pumps, electric resistance heaters, and thermal storage. The annual fuel requirement for several onsite integrated energy systems as well as the fuel cell breakeven cost for one specific system were calculated. It is found that electrical efficiency cannot be traded off against thermal efficiency without paying a penalty in system efficiency.
