Using density functional theory to construct multiphase equations of state: tin as an example

We present a general methodology for using density functional theory (DFT) calculations as a basis for constructing multiphase equations of state (EOS). Focusing on tin as an example, we discuss the full process of generating a tabular EOS, starting from first-principles calculations and arriving at a full EOS in agreement with existing experimental data. We begin by describing DFT calculations for the five solid phases and liquid phase of tin, including cold curve, phonon, and DFT-based molecular dynamics calculations. We then discuss methods for incorporating DFT results into materials models used in OpenSesame, the program used to create a full tabular multiphase EOS. Next, we outline a general strategy for adjusting model parameters in OpenSesame to fit to a variety of experimental data, including isobaric data, isothermal data, shock data, solid-solid phase boundary measurements, and measurements of the melt curve. We end with a discussion of the advantages of using DFT data as a foundation for EOS generation and discuss potential strategies for automated EOS generation based on the fitting process highlighted in this work.

Thermochemical Property Measurements of FLiNaK and FLiBe in FY 2020

The technical bases and methods developed at Argonne to measure thermochemical properties of molten salt mixtures are summarized and results provided to show the precision achieved. These methods include measurements of phase transition temperatures and heat capacity at temperatures to approximately 700 °C for eutectic mixture of 46.5-11.5-42.0 mol% LiF-NaF-KF (FLiNAK) and 67-33 mol% LiF-BeF 2 (FLiBe). Details of procedures, calibrations and operation of instruments are discussed and results are compared with values available in the literature. Additional discussions address the sources of error and estimated uncertainties in the reported values.

Search for Lepton Number Violation in 136 Xe and 134 Xe Decay

The EXO-200/nEXO group at Stony Brook University led by Krishna Kumar searched for neutrinoless double beta decay of 134 Xe and 136 Xe via participation in the final phase of the EXO-200 experiment and calibration pre-R&D for the next generation nEXO concept. On EXO-200, we carried out an improved analysis in the search for 134 Xe using data from Phase-II running. On nEXO, we completed a paper on our first phase of measurements demonstrating the feasibility of using photoelectricity from a gold photocathode to produce controlled amounts of charged clusters in liquid xenon. This has set the stage to develop a new test stand to evaluate the stability of a gold photocathode in order to explore the sensitivity of this method to monitor long electron lifetimes.

Critical thermonuclear reactions in classical novae and type I X-ray bursts

The goal of this project was to experimentally constrain the nuclear reaction rates whose uncertainties have the largest impact on models of classical novae and Type-I X-ray bursts. These astrophysical events occur when a white dwarf or neutron star, respectively, accretes hydrogen and helium from a companion star until a thermonuclear runaway ensues. The primary reactions of interest to this project for novae and X-ray bursts are 30 P(ρ,γ) 31 S and 15 O(α,γ) 19 Ne. The project methodology was to develop a new radiation detection system in two phases to measure the low-energy beta-delayed particle emissions of 31 Cl and 20 Mg at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) in order to constrain these two reaction rates. In particular, a gas-filled charged-particle detector was to be designed, constructed and operated, in concert with the SeGA array.

Laser interferometer micrometer system

Laser micrometer measures dimensions of precision gyro and gas bearing parts using the principle of measuring light phase changes rather than a direct fringe count. The system uses light beams to eliminate errors due to deformations and surface irregularities, and three interferometers.

Sinusoidal-pressure generator for testing dynamic pressure probes

Generator can produce sinusoidal pressures at frequencies from 300 to 5000 Hz and peak-to-peak amplitudes up to 5.6 lbs/sq in. Amplitude and phase-angle measurements made at various frequencies are compared with measurements from a piezoelectric transducer mounted flush with the resonant tube wall.
