New Retropropulsion Concept with NTAC Power for Mars Entry

Since the initial deployments of probes, orbiters, and rovers on Mars, there have been many ideas and concepts on how to perform an entry, descent, and landing (EDL) process efficiently and safely through the Martian atmosphere to place payloads onto the surface of Mars. Among the missions sent to perform EDL on Mars, only roughly sixty percent of the missions have been successful. The 5 minutes to 20 minutes of communication gap due to long-range telecommunications to Earth, described as seven minutes of terror, add to the complexity of EDL missions to Mars. As the payloads have become larger, the method of EDL has become more complex. To place an automobile-size science rover on the Martian surface requires the use of retrorockets mounted on a Sky Crane during the final subsonic stage of EDL. Larger payloads will require more propellant and more and/or larger retropropulsion engines during the earlier supersonic stage of EDL. The Sky Crane concept may not be scalable for these larger payloads and during supersonic flight; hence, new approaches are sought. A new power technology invented at NASA called Nuclear Thermionic Avalanche Cell (NTAC) may offer an additional solution. Powered by NTAC, the newly invented retropropulsion concept would ingest carbon dioxide gas, heat it up and blast it out as a new feature of the EDL process. NTAC would be reusable as a primary power source for payloads such as excavators, three-dimensional (3D) printers, or mobile equipment for mining, construction, and additive manufacturing tasks. Since NTAC would need to be landed with its host payload or as a standalone power package, assessing its ability to assist in its own EDL seems reasonable. The purpose of this Technical Memorandum (TM) is to examine the performance of NTAC in the context of EDL at Mars for motivating studies for integrating NTAC into future Mars mission architectures.

Immersive Digital Twins and Decision Making

This work focuses on developing and implementing immersive digital twins to support decision-making processes in construction automation and energy simulation analysis. The use of digital twins enables users to explore and interact with virtual replicas of physical systems, providing a unique and valuable perspective for problem-solving. In the context of construction automation, we present two case studies that integrate immersive visualization and worker-machine interaction. In the context of energy simulation analysis using digital twins, we describe our digital twin framework that combines interactive visualization with machine learning techniques to approximate computationally expensive simulations, allowing for faster and more efficient analysis of complex energy systems. Through these research endeavors, we demonstrate the potential of immersive digital twins in decision-making across various domains.

Internal short circuit and failure mechanisms of lithium-ion pouch cells under mechanical indentation abuse conditions: An experimental study

Electromechanical structural integrity and thermal stability dictate the safety performance of lithium-ion batteries. Progressive deformation and failure across microscopic and macroscopic lengths scales that are responsible for internal short circuit (ISC) in lithium-ion cells under mechanical abuse conditions remains elusive. In this study, a series of indentation tests were conducted on lithium-ion cells with different capacities up to the occurrence of ISC. The external response and internal configuration of these cells were investigated. It is discovered that cells with different capacities and state of charges exhibited different behaviors. Maximum temperature, which is often regarded as the most important parameter related to thermal runaway (TR), varied considerably due to the complicated contact configurations. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) showed that ISC was a collective result of shear band or other strain-localization modes in the electrode assembly, shear offsets in the granular coatings of electrodes, and the accompanying ductile fracture in the metal foils. We believe that the irregular strain-localization modes (kinks, cusps, and buckles), radical mismatches in mechanical properties of different layers, and geometric features of the indenter eventually lead to the tearing/puncture of cell separator at various locations. Furthermore, the results could provide useful guidance for the micromechanical modeling of lithium-ion cells.

Fully implicit crystal plasticity models representing orientations with modified Rodrigues parameters

Here, this work describes a crystal plasticity formulation combining several mathematical, numerical, and implementation choices to produce a highly efficient model. Specifically, the key choices in the implementation are (1) representing orientations with modified Rodrigues parameters, (2) implementing a fully coupled implicit time integration for the elastic stretch, the crystal orientations, and the model internal variables, (3) implementing the model in the NEML2 constitutive modeling framework, based on PyTorch, to vectorize the calculations and port the computation to GPUs and other hardware accelerators, and (4) an exact implementation of the consistent tangent matrix, even for arbitrary coupling to other field variables beyond the displacements, like temperature, neutron fluence, etc. The first two features of the model are, to our knowledge, novel. The paper considers each of these choices individually as well as the final model as a whole. This includes a full description of modified Rodrigues parameters, their advantages over other representations of orientations, the mathematical formulae and tools required to implement a model with modified Rodrigues parameters, and a detailed description of the geometry of the space of modified Rodrigues parameters (in an appendix). It also includes a description of a fully implicit time integration scheme for the orientations and the advantages in representing orientations with modified Rodrigues parameters in implementing such a model. The work then assess, via numerical examples, the advantages of fully coupled implicit time integration versus more common decoupled and explicit time integration schemes. These studies demonstrate the computational advantages of fully coupled integration versus other time integration algorithms, though the performance of the competing models depends on the complexity of the underlying single crystal model. The study concludes by demonstrating that the choice of time integration method affects the sharpness of the predicted texture, with explicit methods for integrating the orientations overestimating texture sharpness and implicit methods underestimating texture sharpness.

Subsonic Aircraft Safety Icing Study

NASA's Integrated Resilient Aircraft Control (IRAC) Project is one of four projects within the agency s Aviation Safety Program (AvSafe) in the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD). The IRAC Project, which was redesigned in the first half of 2007, conducts research to advance the state of the art in aircraft control design tools and techniques. A "Key Decision Point" was established for fiscal year 2007 with the following expected outcomes: document the most currently available statistical/prognostic data associated with icing for subsonic transport, summarize reports by subject matter experts in icing research on current knowledge of icing effects on control parameters and establish future requirements for icing research for subsonic transports including the appropriate alignment. This study contains: (1) statistical analyses of accident and incident data conducted by NASA researchers for this "Key Decision Point", (2) an examination of icing in other recent statistically based studies, (3) a summary of aviation safety priority lists that have been developed by various subject-matter experts, including the significance of aircraft icing research in these lists and (4) suggested future requirements for NASA icing research. The review of several studies by subject-matter experts was summarized into four high-priority icing research areas. Based on the Integrated Resilient Aircraft Control (IRAC) Project goals and objectives, the IRAC project was encouraged to conduct work in all of the high-priority icing research areas that were identified, with the exception of the developing of methods to sense and document actual icing conditions.

Quantifying microbial roles in environmental iron oxidation via an integrated kinetics, `omics and metabolic modeling study (Final Report)

Iron oxyhydroxides are extremely reactive components of environmental systems, and therefore exert a strong influence on biogeochemical cycles. These oxyhydroxides strongly adsorb many biologically-relevant elements, including organic carbon and phosphate, as well as a wide range of metals including uranium and actinide species. Thus, the formation mechanism of iron oxyhydroxides are key to understanding both nutrient and contaminant cycling. Microorganisms can catalyze iron oxidation and promote the formation of Fe biominerals and thus are increasingly recognized as important players in biogeochemical cycling. However, it is completely unknown how much of environmental iron oxidation is biologically mediated versus abiotic, and various challenges in studying microbial iron oxidation have hindered accurate incorporation into hydrobiogeochemical models. The overarching goal of our work was to quantify and constrain microbial iron oxidation rates and use ‘omics to gain insight into the controls on this process, while developing tools to enable integration of biotic iron oxidation into hydrobiogeochemical models. Our work focused on the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina, where extensive microbial iron oxidation has been observed. At Tims Branch, part of the Argonne National Laboratory Wetland Hydrobiogeochemistry Science Focus Area (Argonne SFA), where groundwater discharges into a stream, iron-oxidizing microbial mats form and appear to be a major sink of uranium. In the wetlands that surround Tims Branch, there are wide swaths of iron microbial mats and flocs (mobilized mat). We measured biotic and abiotic iron oxidation rates using mats and water sampled from these sites and found that iron oxidation is primarily carried out by chemolithotrophic microorganisms. The resulting rate constants can be incorporated into models. These mats were characterized by metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, which showed that aerobic chemolithotrophs were the dominant iron-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB), and these included Gallionellaceae and Leptothrix, and possibly Rhodoferax, which is known as an Fe-reducer but may also oxidize Fe(II). This demonstrated that diverse FeOB can coexist and suggests that there are a range of niches and therefore drivers of chemolithotrophic iron oxidation. Analysis of reconstructed genomes strongly suggests that a major factor in diversity is carbon source, as genomes contained varied pathways for autotrophy and heterotrophy. We performed an in-depth analysis of Leptothrix ochracea genomes, since this sheath-former is one of the primary mat builders, yet its physiology remained unresolved. A combination of genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolic modeling suggest that L. ochracea grows mixotrophically using a combination of Fe(II) and organics for energy and both inorganic and organic carbon to create biomass. This contrasts with the largely autotrophic Gallionellaceae (Gallionella, Sideroxydans, and Ferriphaselus) also present in the mats and flocs. Remarkably, multiple FeOB, both Leptothrix and Gallionellaceae, showed activity in response to Fe(II) in live mat incubations. We tracked the gene expression of individual MAGs to Fe(II) and found that various autotrophic and heterotrophic FeOB responded to Fe(II), increasing expression of both carbon fixation and organic utilization genes. The results of the integrated field, kinetics, and omics studies give detailed insight into 1) the taxa that oxidize Fe, and 2) how they connect Fe, C, and N cycles. Towards the goal of connecting omics data to hydrobiogeochemical models, we worked with the KBase team to create a template metabolic model for chemolithotrophic iron oxidation. We initially modeled the well-characterized isolate Gallionellaceae Sideroxydans lithotrophicus, and also applied the model to the mixotroph L. ochracea. In all, we have characterized diverse FeOB in a representative wetland system and solved key problems that enable better incorporation of iron-oxidizing microbes into hydrobiogeochemical models.

Experimental study of a thermal energy storage-integrated heat pump system for load shifting in space cooling and heating

This study experimentally investigates an all-season thermal energy storage-integrated heat pump (TES-HP) system developed to enhance building energy efficiency and support grid-interactive operation through load shifting in both cooling and heating. A 4-ton commercial rooftop air-source heat pump was modified by integrating a hydronic thermal energy storage (TES) unit containing a phase change material (PCM) with a melting temperature of 22.0 °C. The system employs two reversing valves and three electronic expansion valves to enable six operating modes, including normal, TES charging, and TES discharging in both cooling and heating seasons. A subcooling-controlled electronic expansion valve was implemented to mitigate refrigerant maldistribution caused by unequal internal volumes among the heat exchangers. Compared with a baseline heat pump, the TES-HP reduced power consumption by 30–50% during cooling at an ambient temperature of 40.6 °C, and by up to 60% during heating at −15.0 °C, while maintaining high performance under cold-climate conditions. Additionaly to experimental evaluation, a simplified annualized on-peak analysis was conducted to compare the TES-HP with the baseline system, indicating an on-peak electricity reduction of approximately 876 kWhₑ per unit per year and associated on-peak cost savings under time-of-use pricing. These results demonstrate that the TES-HP effectively decouples HP operation from adverse ambient conditions, improving flexibility, resilience, and energy efficiency. This work advances prior research by experimentally proving the integration of PCM-based TES for a year-round, load-flexible HVAC operation.

Design and Operation of Energy Systems with Large Amounts of Variable Generation: IEA Wind TCP Task 25 (Final Summary Report)

This report summarizes findings on wind integration from the 17 countries or sponsors participating in the International Energy Agency Wind Technology Collaboration Program (IEA Wind TCP) Task 25 from 2006-2020. Both real experience and studies are reported. Many wind integration studies incorporate solar energy, and most of the results discussed here are valid for other variable renewables in addition to wind. The national case studies address several impacts of wind power on electric power systems. In this report, they are grouped under long-term planning issues and short-term operational impacts. Long-term planning issues include grid planning and capacity adequacy. Short-term operational impacts include reliability, stability, reserves, and maximizing the value of wind in operational timescales (balancing related issues). The first section presents the variability and uncertainty of power system-wide wind power, and the last section presents recent studies toward 100% shares of renewables. The appendix provides a summary of ongoing research in the national projects contributing to Task 25 for 2021-2024. The design and operation of power and energy systems is an evolving field. As ambitious targets toward net-zero carbon energy systems are announced globally, many scenarios are being made regarding how to reach these future decarbonized energy systems, most of them involving large amounts of variable renewables, mainly wind and solar energy. The secure operation of power systems is increasingly challenging, and the impacts of variable renewables, new electrification loads together with increased distribution system resources will lead to somewhat different challenges for different systems. Tools and methods to study future power and energy systems also need to evolve, and both short-term operational aspects (such as power system stability) and long-term aspects (such as resource adequacy) will probably see new paradigms of operation and design. The experience of operating and planning systems with large amounts of variable generation is accumulating, and research to tackle the challenges of inverter-based, nonsynchronous generation is on the way. Energy transition and digitalization also bring new flexibility opportunities, both short and long term.

Oblique Eccentric Gaze Holding Evokes Larger Horizontal than Vertical Rebound Nystagmus

Rebound nystagmus (RN) has been used to probe the adaptation mechanisms of the gaze holding system. This type of nystagmus is invoked upon returning to central gaze after prolonged fixation at an eccentric point and it is thought to reflect a set-point adaptation of the neural integrator circuit. Previous studies have only observed horizontal RN after horizontal eccentric gaze holding, reflecting adaptation of the horizontal neural integrator. The current study seeks to elucidate how eccentric gaze at oblique target locations, where there are equal horizontal and vertical components, affects the characteristics of the resulting RN. For a given trial, subjects were instructed to fixate a central flashing target for 5 seconds, then fixate an eccentric continuous target for 30 seconds at one of six possible locations (4 oblique and 2 horizontal targets), and finally fixate centrally at a flashing target for 15 seconds where RN is assessed. Binocular eye-tracking data were collected at 250 Hz. Slow-phase velocity (SPV) or the slow drift part of the nystagmus was used to quantify the magnitude of RN. Subjects showed elevated SPV in the horizontal component (2.3 deg/s), but less in the vertical component (1.4 deg/s) after oblique eccentric gaze holding, reflecting an oblique RN. The smaller vertical RN may reflect a different behavior of the horizontal and vertical neural integrators which are anatomically separated. Under the current paradigm, oblique gaze holding would appear to have a smaller effect on adaptation of the vertical integrator than in the horizontal integrator. Further investigation is needed to establish the reference frame of this distinction between the horizontal and vertical integrator circuits.

NREL Fleet Analysis Support Through Technology Integration Collaboration

This study leveraged the partnership between the United States Department of Energy's (DOE) Clean Cities Coalition Network and the Association for the Work Truck Industry (NTEA) to launch a vehicle and fleet analysis project that assisted fleets in identifying opportunities to save energy, improve efficiency, reduce costs, and meet environmental goals via short term data logging and analysis. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) sought to establish a process that included initial data acquisition, provided data storage, and developed analytic methods to inform fleets of areas of opportunity based on approximately 30 days of in use vehicle performance data. However, long-term the project will require ongoing funding to fully develop and maintain the data sharing platform and to produce more complex analysis.

Potassium Rankine cycle vapor chamber (heat pipe) radiator study

A structurally integrated vapor chamber fin (heat pipe) radiator is defined and evaluated as a potential candidate for rejecting waste heat from the potassium Rankine cycle powerplant. Several vapor chamber fin geometries, using stainless steel construction, are evaluated and an optimum is selected. A comparison is made with an operationally equivalent conduction fin radiator. Both radiators employ NaK-78 in the primary coolant loop. In addition, the Vapor Chamber Fin (VCF) radiator utilizes sodium in the vapor chambers. Preliminary designs are developed for the conduction fin and VCF concepts. Performance tests on a single vapor chamber were conducted to verify the VCF design. A comparison shows the conduction fin radiator easier to fabricate, but heavier in weight, particularly as meteoroid protection requirements become more stringent. While the analysis was performed assuming the potassium Rankine cycle powerplant, the results are equally applicable to any system radiating heat to space in the 900 to 1400 F temperature range.

CFD Design for Bypass Ratio 15 Nacelle Integration

A computational study is being conducted to evaluate the installation effects of ultra-high bypass ratio (BPR) nacelles on conventional twin-engine transonic transport aircraft. An unstructured Navier-Stokes flow solver, USM3D, is being utilized for the study. The results have been compared to wind tunnel data obtained in the NASA LaRC 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel, for nacelle BPRs of nine and twelve. The USM3D flow solver was found to adequately predict the flows of interest, and has subsequently been used to analyze the installation effects of a theoretical BPR-15 nacelle. In addition, a design code is being used in conjunction with USM3D to redesign the wing in the presence of the BPR-15 nacelle. The preliminary design results will be presented.
