Effective field theory of Stückelberg vector bosons

We explore the effective field theory of a vector field $X^μ$ that has a Stückelberg mass. The absence of a gauge symmetry for $X^μ$ implies Lorentz-invariant operators are constructed directly from Xμ. Beyond the kinetic and mass terms, allowed interactions at the renormalizable level include $X_μX^μH^†H, (X_μX^μ)^2$, and $X_μj^μ$, where $j^μ$ is a global current of the SM or of a hidden sector. We show that all of these interactions lead to scattering amplitudes that grow with powers of $\sqrt{s}/m_X$, except for the case of $X_μj^μ$ where $j^μ$ is a nonanomalous global current. The latter is well-known when $\textit{X}$ is identified as a dark photon coupled to the electromagnetic current, often written equivalently as kinetic mixing between $\textit{X}$ and the photon. The power counting for the energy growth of the scattering amplitudes is facilitated by isolating the longitudinal enhancement. We examine in detail the interaction with an anomalous global vector current $X_μj^μ_{\text{anom}}$, carefully isolating the finite contribution to the fermion triangle diagram. We calculate the longitudinally-enhanced observables $Z → X_γ$ (when $m_X < m_Z), f\bar{f} → X_γ$, and $Z_γ → Z_γ$ when $\textit{X}$ couples to the baryon number current. Introducing a "fake" gauge-invariance by writing $X^μ = A^μ – ∂^μπ/m_X$, the would-be gauge anomaly associated with $A_μj^μ_{\text{anom}}$ is canceled by $j^μ_{\text{anom}}∂_μπ/m_X$; this is the four-dimensional Green-Schwarz anomaly-cancellation mechanism at work. Our analysis demonstrates there is a much larger set of possible interactions that an EFT with a Stückelberg vector field can have, revealing scattering amplitudes that grow with energy. The growth of these amplitudes can be tamed by a dark Higgs sector, but this requires dark Higgs boson interactions (and reintroduces fine-tuning in the dark Higgs sector) that can be separated from X interactions only in the limit $g \ll 1$ .

Algebraic model to study the internal structure of pseudoscalar mesons with heavy-light quark content

The internal structure of all lowest-lying pseudoscalar mesons with heavy-light quark content is studied in detail using an algebraic model that has been applied recently, and successfully, to the same physical observables of pseudoscalar and vector mesons with hidden-flavor quark content, from light to heavy quark sectors. The algebraic model consists on constructing simple and evidence-based of the meson’s Bethe-Salpeter amplitude (BSA) and quark’s propagator in such a way that the Bethe-Salpeter wave function (BSWF) can then be readily computed algebraically. Its subsequent projection onto the light front yields the light front wave function (LFWF) whose form allows us a simple access to the valence-quark parton distribution amplitude (PDA) by integrating over the transverse momentum squared. We exploit our current knowledge of the PDAs of lowest-lying pseudoscalar heavy-light mesons to compute their generalized parton distributions (GPDs) through the overlap representation of LFWFs. From these three dimensional knowledge, different limits/projections lead us to deduce the related parton distribution functions (PDFs), electromagnetic form factors (EFFs), and impact parameter space GPDs (IPS-GPDs). When possible, we make explicit comparisons with available experimental results and earlier theoretical predictions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Single phonon detection for dark matter via quantum evaporation and sensing of He 3

Dark matter is five times more abundant than ordinary visible matter in our Universe. While laboratory searches hunting for dark matter have traditionally focused on the electroweak scale, theories of low mass hidden sectors motivate new detection techniques. Extending these searches to lower mass ranges, well below 1 GeV / c 2 , poses new challenges as rare interactions with standard model matter transfer progressively less energy to electrons and nuclei in detectors. Here, we propose an approach based on phonon-assisted quantum evaporation combined with quantum sensors for detection of desorption events via tracking of spin coherence. The intent of our proposed dark matter sensors is to extend the parameter space to energy transfers in rare interactions to as low as a few meV for detection of dark matter particles in the keV / c 2 mass range. Natural anomaly mediation from the landscape with implications for LHC SUSY searches

Supersymmetric models with the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking (AMSB) form for soft SUSY breaking terms arise in two different settings: (1) extra-dimensional models where SUSY breaking occurs in a sequestered sector, and (2) 4 − d models with dynamical SUSY breaking in a hidden sector where scalars gain masses of order the gravitino mass m 3 / 2 , but gaugino masses and trilinear soft terms are assumed to be of the AMSB form. Both models run into serious conflicts with (1) LHC sparticle and Higgs mass constraints, (2) constraints from winolike weakly interacting massive particle dark matter searches, and (3) bounds from naturalness. These conflicts may be avoided by introducing minor changes to the underlying phenomenological models consisting of nonuniversal bulk scalar Higgs masses and A terms, providing a setting for natural anomaly mediation (nAMSB). In nAMSB, the wino is still expected to be the lightest of the gauginos, but the Higgsinos are expected to be the lightest electroweakinos (EWinos) in accord with naturalness. We examine what sorts of spectra are expected to emerge when nAMSB arises from a string landscape setting: While model 2 can only be natural for a Higgs mass m h ≲ 123 GeV , model 1 can accommodate naturalness along with m h ∼ 125 GeV while still respecting LHC bounds on sparticle masses. We explore the LHC phenomenology of nAMSB models where we find that for Higgsino pair production, typically larger dilepton mass gaps arise from the soft dilepton-plus-jets signature than in models with gaugino mass unification. For wino-pair production, the higher m 3 / 2 portion of nAMSB parameter space is excluded by recent LHC bounds from gaugino pair production searches. We characterize the dominant LHC signatures arising from the remaining lower m 3 / 2 ∼ 90 – 200 TeV range of parameter space, which should be fully testable at high-luminosity LHC via EWino pair production searches. Toward UV models of kinetic mixing and portal matter. V. Indirect probes of the new physics scale

Kinetic mixing of the dark photon, the gauge boson of a hidden U ( 1 ) D , with the Standard Model (SM) gauge fields to induce an interaction between ordinary matter and dark matter (DM) at 1-loop requires the existence of portal matter (PM) fields having both dark and SM charges. As discussed in earlier work, these same PM fields can also lead to other loop-level mechanisms besides kinetic mixing that can generate significant interactions between SM fermions and the dark photon in a manner analogous to those that can be generated between a Dirac neutrino and a SM photon, i.e., dark moments. In either case, there are reasons to believe, e.g., due to the renormalization group equation running of the U ( 1 ) D gauge coupling, that PM fields may have ∼ TeV -scale masses that lie at or above those directly accessible to the HL-LHC. If they lie above the reach of the HL-LHC, then the only way to possibly explore the physics at this high scale in the short term is via indirect measurements made at lower energies, e.g., at lepton colliders operating in the m Z to 1 TeV range. In particular, processes such as e + e − → γ + DM or e + e − → f ¯ f , where f is a SM fermion, may be most useful in this regard. Here we explore these possibilities within the framework of a simple toy PM model, introduced in earlier work, based on a non-Abelian dark gauge group completion operating at the PM scale. In the kinetic mixing setup, we show these efforts fail due to the inherently tiny cross sections in the face of substantial SM backgrounds. However, in the case of interactions via induced dark moments, since they necessarily take the form of higher dimensional operators whose influence grows with energy, we show that access to PM-scale information may become possible for certain ranges of the toy model parameters for both of these e + e − processes at a 1 TeV collider. Charmonium χ c 0 and χ c 2 resonances in coupled-channel scattering from lattice QCD

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with J P C = 0 + + , 2 + + in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV , we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to D D ¯ , D s D ¯ s and the kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to D D ¯ , D D ¯ * and D * D ¯ * . We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state χ c 0 ( 1 P ) and the resonance found around 4000 MeV. Moduli axions, stabilizing moduli, and the large field swampland conjecture in heterotic M-theory

We compute the F- and D-term potential energy for the dilaton, complex structure, and Kähler moduli of realistic vacua of heterotic M-theory compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds where, for simplicity, we choose ℎ 1,1 = ℎ 2,1 = 1. However, the formalism is immediately applicable to the “universal” moduli of Calabi-Yau threefolds with ℎ 1,1 = ℎ 1,2 > 1 as well. The F-term potential is computed using the nonperturbative complex structure, gaugino condensate and “world sheet instanton” superpotentials in theories in which the hidden sector contains an anomalous U⁡(1) structure group. The Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation induces inhomogeneous “axion” transformations for the imaginary components of the dilaton and Kähler modulus—which then produce a D-term potential. V D is a function of the real components of the dilaton and Kähler modulus (s and t) that is minimized and precisely vanishes along a unique line in the s–t plane. Excitations transverse to this line have a mass m anom which is an explicit function of t. The F-term potential energy is then evaluated along the V D = 0 line. For values of t small enough that m anom ≳ M U —where M U is the compactification scale—we plot V F for a realistic choice of coefficients as a function of the Pfaffian parameter p. We find values of p for which V F has a global minimum at negative or zero vacuum density or a metastable minimum with positive vacuum density. In all three cases, the s, t, and associated “axion” moduli are completely stabilized. Finally, we show that, for any of these vacua, the large t behavior of the potential energy satisfies the “large scalar field” Swampland conjecture.

Search for prompt production of pentaquarks in charm hadron final states

A search for hidden-charm pentaquark states decaying to a range of Σ c D ¯ and Λ c + D ¯ final states, as well as doubly charmed pentaquark states to Σ c D and Λ c + D , is made using samples of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7 fb − 1 recorded by the LHCb detector at s = 13 TeV . Since no significant signals are found, upper limits are set on the pentaquark yields relative to that of the Λ c + baryon in the Λ c + → p K − π + decay mode. The known pentaquark states are also investigated, and their signal yields are found to be consistent with zero in all cases. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Highly-efficient quantum Fourier transformations for certain non-Abelian groups

Quantum Fourier transformations are an essential component of many quantum algorithms, from prime factoring to quantum simulation. While the standard Abelian QFrT is well studied, important variants corresponding to non-Abelian groups of interest have seen less development. In particular, fast non-Abelian Fourier transformations are important components for both quantum simulations of field theories as well as approaches to the non-Abelian hidden subgroup problem. In this work, we present fast quantum Fourier transformations for a number of non-Abelian groups of interest for high energy physics, B T , B O , 6 Δ ( 27 ) , Δ ( 54 ) , and Σ ( 36 × 3 ) . For each group, we derive explicit quantum circuits and estimate resource scaling for fault-tolerant implementations. Our work shows that the development of a fast Fourier transformation can substantively reduce simulation costs by an up to three orders of magnitude for the finite groups that we have investigated.

New nonrenormalization theorem from UV/IR mixing

In this paper, we prove a new nonrenormalization theorem which arises from UV/IR mixing. This theorem and its corollaries are relevant for all four-dimensional perturbative tachyon-free closed string theories which can be realized from higher-dimensional theories via geometric compactifications. As such, our theorem therefore holds regardless of the presence or absence of spacetime supersymmetry and regardless of the gauge symmetries or matter content involved. This theorem resolves a hidden clash between modular invariance and the process of decompactification, and enables us to uncover a number of surprising phenomenological properties of these theories. Chief among these is the fact that certain physical quantities within such theories cannot exhibit logarithmic or power-law running and instead enter an effective fixed-point regime above the compactification scale. This cessation of running occurs as the result of the UV/IR mixing inherent in the theory. These effects apply not only for gauge couplings but also for the Higgs mass and other quantities of phenomenological interest, thereby eliminating the logarithmic and/or power-law running that might have otherwise appeared for such quantities. These results illustrate the power of UV/IR mixing to tame divergences—even without supersymmetry—and reinforce the notion that UV/IR mixing may play a vital role in resolving hierarchy problems without supersymmetry. Effective Gaps Are Not Effective: Quasipolynomial Classical Simulation of Obstructed Stoquastic Hamiltonians

All known examples suggesting an exponential separation between classical simulation algorithms and stoquastic adiabatic quantum computing (StoqAQC) exploit symmetries that constrain adiabatic dynamics to effective, symmetric subspaces. The symmetries produce large effective eigenvalue gaps, which in turn make adiabatic computation efficient. We present a classical algorithm to subexponentially sample from an effective subspace of any k -local stoquastic Hamiltonian H , without a priori knowledge of its symmetries (or near symmetries). Our algorithm maps any k -local Hamiltonian to a graph G = ( V , E ) with | V | = O (poly (n)) , where n is the number of qubits. Given the well-known result of Babai [Graph isomorphism in quasipolynomial time, in Proceedings of the Forty-Eighth Annual ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (2016), pp. 684–697], we exploit graph isomorphism to study the automorphisms of G and arrive at an algorithm quasipolynomial in | V | for producing samples from effective subspace eigenstates of H . Our results rule out exponential separations between StoqAQC and classical computation that arise from hidden symmetries in k -local Hamiltonians. Our graph representation of H is not limited to stoquastic Hamiltonians and may rule out corresponding obstructions in nonstoquastic cases, or be useful in studying additional properties of k -local Hamiltonians.

Stacking Domain Wall Magnons in Twisted van der Waals Magnets

In this report using bilayer CrI 3 as an example, we demonstrate that stacking domain walls in van der Waals magnets can host one-dimensional (1D) magnon channels, which have lower energies than bulk magnons. Interestingly, some magnon channels are hidden in magnetically homogeneous background and can only be inferred with the knowledge of stacking domain walls. Compared to 1D magnons confined in magnetic domain walls, 1D magnons in stacking domain walls are more stable against external perturbations. We show that the relaxed moiré superlattices of small-angle twisted bilayer CrI 3 is a natural realization of stacking domain walls and host interconnected moiré magnon network. Our Letter reveals the importance of stacking domain walls in understanding magnetic properties of van der Waals magnets and extends the scope of stacking engineering to magnetic dynamics.

Charge-4e Superconductivity from Multicomponent Nematic Pairing: Application to Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We show that unconventional nematic superconductors with multicomponent order parameter in lattices with three- and sixfold rotational symmetries support a charge-4e vestigial superconducting phase above T c . The charge-4e state, which is a condensate of four-electron bound states that preserve the rotational symmetry of the lattice, is nearly degenerate with a competing vestigial nematic state, which is nonsuperconducting and breaks the rotational symmetry. This robust result is the consequence of a hidden discrete symmetry in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, which permutes quantities in the gauge sector and in the crystalline sector of the symmetry group. We argue that random strain generally favors the charge-4e state over the nematic phase, as it acts as a random mass to the former but as a random field to the latter. Furthermore, we propose that two-dimensional inhomogeneous systems displaying nematic superconductivity, such as twisted bilayer graphene, provide a promising platform to realize the elusive charge-4e superconducting phase.

Possible Superconductivity with a Bogoliubov Fermi Surface in a Lightly Doped Kagome U(1) Spin Liquid

Whether the doped t-J model on the Kagome lattice supports exotic superconductivity has not been decisively answered. In this paper, we propose a new class of variational states for this model and perform large-scale variational Monte Carlo simulation on it. The proposed variational states are parameterized by the SU(2)-gauge-rotation angles, as the SU(2)-gauge structure hidden in the Gutzwiller-projected mean-field ansatz for the undoped model is broken upon doping. These variational doped states smoothly connect to the previously studied U(1) π-flux or 0-flux states, and energy minimization among them yields a chiral noncentrosymmetric nematic superconducting state with 2 × 2-enlarged unit cell. Moreover, this pair density wave state possesses a finite Fermi surface for the Bogoliubov quasi particles. We further study experimentally relevant properties of this intriguing pairing state.

Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism at an Oxide-Nitride Interface

Heterointerfaces have led to the discovery of novel electronic and magnetic states because of their strongly entangled electronic degrees of freedom. Single-phase chromium compounds always exhibit antiferromagnetism following the prediction of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. So far, exchange coupling between chromium ions via heteroanions has not been explored and the associated quantum states are unknown. In this work, we report the successful epitaxial synthesis and characterization of chromium oxide (Cr 2 O 3 )-chromium nitride (CrN) superlattices. Room-temperature ferromagnetic spin ordering is achieved at the interfaces between these two antiferromagnets, and the magnitude of the effect decays with increasing layer thickness. First-principles calculations indicate that robust ferromagnetic spin interaction between Cr 3+ ions via anion-hybridization across the interface yields the lowest total energy. This work opens the door to fundamental understanding of the unexpected and exceptional properties of oxide-nitride interfaces and provides access to hidden phases at low-dimensional quantum heterostructures.

Growth of Mesoscale Ordered Two-Dimensional Hydrogen-Bond Organic Framework with the Observation of Flat Band

Flat bands (FBs), presenting a strongly interacting quantum system, have drawn increasing interest recently. However, experimental growth and synthesis of FB materials have been challenging and have remained elusive for the ideal form of monolayer materials where the FB arises from destructive quantum interference as predicted in 2D lattice models. Here, we report surface growth of a self-assembled monolayer of 2D hydrogen-bond (H-bond) organic frameworks (HOFs) of 1,3,5-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzene (THPB) on Au(111) substrate and the observation of FB. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy or spectroscopy shows mesoscale, highly ordered, and uniform THPB HOF domains, while angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy highlights a FB over the whole Brillouin zone. Density-functional-theory calculations and analyses reveal that the observed topological FB arises from a hidden electronic breathing-kagome lattice without atomically breathing bonds. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that self-assembly of HOFs provides a viable approach for synthesis of 2D organic topological materials, paving the way to explore many-body quantum states of topological FBs.

New Structure in the Deuteron

Here, we demonstrate that a paradigm shift from considering the deuteron as a system of a bound proton and neutron to that of a pseudovector system in which we observe a proton and neutron results in the possibility of probing a new “incomplete” P-statelike structure on the light front (LF). This occurs at extremely large internal momenta, which can be achieved in a high energy transfer electrodisintegration of the deuteron. Investigating the deuteron on the light front, where the vacuum fluctuations are suppressed, we found that this new structure, together with the conventional S and D states, is leading order in transferred energy of the reaction and thus not suppressed on the light front. The incompleteness of the observed P state results in a violation of the angular condition that can happen only if the deuteron contains non-nucleonic structures, such as Δ Δ, N*⁢N or hidden color components. We demonstrate that experimentally verifiable signatures of incomplete P states are angular anisotropy of the light front momentum distribution of the nucleon in the deuteron, as well as an enhancement of the tensor polarization strength beyond the S- and D-wave predictions at large internal momenta in the deuteron.

Terahertz-Driven Local Dipolar Correlation in a Quantum Paraelectric

Light-induced ferroelectricity in quantum paraelectrics is a new avenue of achieving dynamic stabilization of hidden orders in quantum materials. In this Letter, we explore the possibility of driving a transient ferroelectric phase in the quantum paraelectric KTaO 3 via intense terahertz excitation of the soft mode. We observe a long-lived relaxation in the terahertz-driven second harmonic generation (SHG) signal that lasts up to 20 ps at 10 K, which may be attributed to light-induced ferroelectricity. Through analyzing the terahertz-induced coherent soft-mode oscillation and finding its hardening with fluence well described by a single-well potential, we demonstrate that intense terahertz pulses up to 500 kV=cm cannot drive a global ferroelectric phase in KTaO 3 . Instead, we find the unusual long-lived relaxation of the SHG signal comes from a terahertz-driven moderate dipolar correlation between the defect-induced local polar structures. We discuss the impact of our findings on current investigations of the terahertz-induced ferroelectric phase in quantum paraelectrics.
