Modeling diffusion and types I-V sorption of water vapor in heterogeneous systems

Here, a sorption and diffusion model is developed using a mobile-immobile decomposition of the vapor concentration. Henry’s mode represents the mobile species which diffuses through the solid, while Langmuir and pooling modes represent possible immobilization processes that cause nonlinearities in sorption capacity. The model can simulate the five classical sorption types and can incorporate additional dynamics compared to models based on thermodynamic equilibrium. Additionally, the framework allows for discontinuities in material properties encountered in multi-material systems. The resulting non-linear coupled equations are solved by employing a finite element method to discretize in space, and a backward Euler method to discretize in time. The discretized system of equations is solved via a Newton-type iteration scheme at each time-step. Four different materials are parameterized for the model, which are then used in examples to demonstrate the model’s ability to capture complex sorption processes in multi-material systems.

Mineral-specific heterogeneous neptunium sorption onto geological repository rocks in oxic and anoxic conditions and various temperatures

Neptunium poses challenges for radioactive wastes management due to its long half-life and ingrowth from americium decay, as well as its high mobility in water in its oxidized forms. Np(V)-bearing aqueous solutions were contacted with polished and crushed gneiss and dolerite from the Yeniseisky site, Russia, which is under consideration as a location for an underground repository, both in oxic and anoxic conditions at 20 and 90 °C. Neptunium sorption on crushed gneiss and dolerite in oxic conditions at 20 °C was quite low, but increased substantially in anoxic conditions. Autoradiography on samples treated at 20 °C revealed that sorbed Np was associated mostly with dark colored iron-bearing minerals, and solvent extraction indicated partial reduction of Np(V) to Np(IV). Sorption of Np from aqueous solutions contacted with dolerite and gneiss at 90 °C was in all cases higher than at the lower temperature. Autoradiography of polished rock samples treated in anoxic conditions at 90 °C revealed that Fe-bearing minerals had 3–4 orders of magnitude more Np sorbed on them than the quartz and feldspar grains. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated this sorbed Np was present as NpO 2 . This study supports the concept that the geologic conditions present at the planned repository site will retard Np migration.

Epitaxial growth mechanism of heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of Mn(II) on manganite under oxic conditions

Manganese oxides are ubiquitous in soils and sediments, and their formation and transformation processes affect the migration and transformation of heavy metals and organic pollutants. Most previous work has been focused the oxidation of Mn(II) on Mn(IV) oxide surface, but it remains poorly understood how Mn(II) interacts with manganite under oxic conditions. Here, the interactions between manganite and dissolved Mn(II) within pH 5.0–9.0 under oxic conditions were systematically studied. The results indicated that adsorbed Mn(II) was directly oxidized to manganite on the surface, and the oxidation rate increased with increasing pH and oxygen partial pressure. Electrons are likely transferred in bulk manganite during the oxidation process of Mn(II). Although manganite induced Mn(II) oxidation and the epitaxial growth of bulk particles, there was no obvious change in mineral phase. Dissolved oxygen accelerated the growth of manganite in Mn(II) solution. Compared with the absence of manganite, the presence of manganite inhibited the formation of hausmannite from Mn(II) oxidation by oxygen in air. Furthermore, this study reveals the catalytic oxidation process and mechanism of Mn(II) on manganite surface, and improves the understanding of manganite crystal growth in supergene environments.

Accelerated and heterogeneous corrosion of Cr-doped uranium nitride fuel pellets

The steam oxidation of Cr-doped UN fuel pellets is analyzed during sequential isothermal holds up to 720 °C. In situ neutron diffraction results show how Cr is accommodated in a secondary U 2 CrN 3 phase, leading to the formation of a duplex UN/U 2 CrN 3 microstructure. Under corrosion, the oxidation of the two phases begins at 400 °C for UN and 430 °C for U 2 CrN 3 , respectively. Because the UN phase is preferentially oxidized in the presence of U 2 CrN 3 , addition of Cr in UN based nuclear fuel is found to accelerate the corrosion rate. At 430 °C the oxidation of UN in the UN/U 2 CrN 3 microstructure is ~ 5 times faster than pure UN, increasing to ~19 times faster at 460 °C. The oxidation of U 2 CrN 3 produces UO 2 via the formation of two transient intermediate phases. In situ neutron diffraction enables oxidation processes of UN and U 2 CrN 3 components to be followed separately within the two-phase system.
