Test and evaluation of water vapor radiometers

The accuracy of very long baseline interferometry in geodetic and astrometric applications is primarily limited by the propagation delays through the troposphere. The part of this delay that is most difficult to predict is due to atmospheric water vapor which can contribute up to about 40 cm of excess propagation path at microwave frequencies. The water vapor content in the atmosphere is variable and is not well correlated with surface meteorological variables. The brightness temperature measured near the transition of water vapor at 22.2 GHz and the propagation delay due to water vapor, or wet path length, are well correlated. This correlation is not perfect because the absorption coefficient and index of refraction do not have the same dependence on temperature and pressure.

A global tectonic activity map with orbital photographic supplement

A three part map showing equatorial and polar regions was compiled showing tectonic and volcanic activity of the past one million years, including the present. Features shown include actively spreading ridges, spreading rates, major active faults, subduction zones, well defined plates, and volcanic areas active within the past one million years. Activity within this period was inferred from seismicity (instrumental and historic), physiography, and published literature. The tectonic activity map was used for planning global geodetic programs of satellite laser ranging and very long base line interferometry and for geologic education.

ORION: Microwave water vapor radiometer subsystem design

Electrical path delay caused by atmospheric water vapor may be a limiting error source for geodetic measurements made with VLBI. Direct measurement of atmospheric water vapor is necessary to obtain path delay correction required by the ORION project. A dual channel water vapor radiometer is described which operates at frequencies near the 22 GHz water vapor line and is capable of collecting data that permits calculation of path delay within 2 cm accuracy.

Planetary geological studies

A global data base was assembled for the study of Mars crater ejecta morphology. The craters were classified as to morhology using individual photographic prints of Viking orbiter frames. Positional and scale information were derived by fitting digitized mosaic coordinates to lattitude-longitude coordinates of surface features from the Mars geodetic control net and feature coordinates from the U.S.G.S. series of 1:5,00,000 scale shaded relief maps. Crater morphology characteristics recorded are of two classes - attributes of each ejecta deposit and other crater charactersitics. Preliminary efforts to check the data base with findings of other workers are described.

Earth applications orbit analysis for a shuttle-mounted Multispectral Mapper

The earth remote sensing problem of orbit design to acquire images with inherent geometric and geodetic accuracy is addressed. The basis for precise orbit modeling is discussed. Various orbit propagation tools are compared. Orbit characteristics for a nominal case at shuttle altitude are displayed. Modeling Parameter sensitivities are evaluated to determine limits on orbit propagation accuracy versus time. It is found that attainable propagation accuracies are sufficient for image quality assessment over the short term at the 15m pixel size desired for a Multispectral Mapper.

Trajectory-Estimation Error Analysis

Orbital and Geodetic Parameter Estimation Error Analysis Program (ORAN) is Bayesian least-squares simulation program for orbital trajectories. ORAN does not process data; rather, computes accuracy of results of data reduction if measurements are processed by minimum-variance data-reduction program. Actual data used to provide time when given measurement was available and estimated noise on that measurement.

Computational aspects of geometric correction data generation in the LANDSAT-D imagery processing

A method is presented for systematic and geodetic correction data calculation. It is based on presentation of image distortions as a sum of nominal distortions and linear effects caused by variation of the spacecraft position and attitude variables from their nominals. The method may be used for both MSS and TM image data and it is incorporated into the processing by means of mostly offline calculations. Modeling shows that the maximal of the method are of the order of 5m at the worst point in a frame; the standard deviations of the average errors less than .8m.

The MSS control point location error filter for LANDSAT-D

The filter produces the maximum likelihood estimates for average values of the spacecraft position and attitude errors during a single scene. The quality of the filter performance is characterized by the maximal cross and along track residual errors for which probability distributions can be calculated analytically for a given pattern of control points. The filter with an automatic selection of the best set of estimates provides geodetic correction at 90% of pixels with residual errors less than 40 m for four or more control points and the mean squared measurement errors of the order of 20-25 m. The same accuracy can be preserved for eight or more control points and measurement errors of 30-35 m.

Synthesis of regional crust and upper-mantle structure from seismic and gravity data

Available seismic and ground based gravity data are combined to infer the three dimensional crust and upper mantle structure in selected regions. This synthesis and interpretation proceeds from large-scale average models suitable for early comparison with high-altitude satellite potential field data to more detailed delineation of structural boundaries and other variations that may be significant in natural resource assessment. Seismic and ground based gravity data are the primary focal point, but other relevant information (e.g. magnetic field, heat flow, Landsat imagery, geodetic leveling, and natural resources maps) is used to constrain the structure inferred and to assist in defining structural domains and boundaries. The seismic data consists of regional refraction lines, limited reflection coverage, surface wave dispersion, teleseismic P and S wave delay times, anelastic absorption, and regional seismicity patterns. The gravity data base consists of available point gravity determinations for the areas considered.

The reduction, verification and interpretation of MAGSAT magnetic data over Canada

Procedures were established to select quiet, least-disturbed MAGSAT data in an effort to study the magnetic field originating in the solid Earth. A preliminary map of scalar field anomalies over Canada and adjacent regions was produced. Data from Fort Churchill magnetic observatory (an auroral zone station) were used in classifying MAGSAT passes as quiet, unsettled, or disturbed. Determinations of long-term quiet levels at Canadian magnetic observatories are being made. For the time interval of each MAGSAT pass, the deviations of the mean hourly values of the magnetic field components are determined from these quiet levels, in particular for Fort Churchill. Primary processing all CHRONINT tapes received to date, involved decoding orbit records, decimating data records, selecting time intervals and latitude intervals, and producing output tapes carrying records with data point time, position and magnetic information. Subsequent processing converts the coordinate system from geocentric to geodetic and removes a reference field.

Torques on the gyro in the gyro relativity experiment

Whether the Newtonian drifts on the gyro as conceived in the gyro relativity experiment can be reduced to a level such that the geodetic and motional earth precessions of general relativity can be detected is addressed. Torques due to gas drag, electrical charging, mass unbalance, cosmic ray impacts, magnetic fields, and gravity gradients in a inclined orbit are calculated and discussed. The conditions necessary for the required accuracy are given.
