Long-lived period-doubled edge modes of interacting and disorder-free Floquet spin chains

Floquet spin chains have been a venue for understanding topological states of matter that are qualitatively different from their static counterparts by, for example, hosting π edge modes that show stable period-doubled dynamics. However the stability of these edge modes to interactions has traditionally required the system to be many-body localized in order to suppress heating. In contrast, here we show that even in the absence of disorder, and in the presence of bulk heating, π edge modes are long lived. Their lifetime is extracted from exact diagonalization and is found to be non-perturbative in the interaction strength. A tunneling estimate for the lifetime is obtained by mapping the stroboscopic time-evolution to dynamics of a single particle in Krylov subspace. In this subspace, the π edge mode manifests as the quasi-stable edge mode of an inhomogeneous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model whose dimerization vanishes in the bulk of the Krylov chain.

Observation of nonlocal Josephson effect on double InAs nanowires

Short-range coherent coupling of two Josephson junctions (JJs) are predicted to generate a supercurrent in one JJ nonlocally modulated by the phase difference in the other. We report on observation of the nonlocal Josephson effect on double InAs nanowires as experimental evidence of the coherent coupling. We measure one JJ sharing one superconducting electrode with the other JJ and observe switching current oscillation as a control of the nonlocal phase difference. Our result will contribute to engineer novel superconducting phenomena with the short-range coherent coupling.

Promotion of oxygen reduction reaction on a double perovskite electrode by a water-induced surface modification

Highly efficient air electrodes are a key component of reversible fuel cells for energy storage and conversion; however, the development of efficient electrodes that are stable against water vapor remains a grand challenge. Here we report an air–electrode, composed of double perovskite material PrBa 0.8 Ca 0.2 Co 2 O 5+δ (PBCC) backbone coated with nanoparticles (NPs) of BaCoO 3-δ (BCO), that exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) while maintaining excellent tolerance to water vapor. When tested in a symmetrical cell exposed to wet air with 3 vol% H 2 O at 750 °C, the electrode shows an area specific resistance of ~0.03 Ω cm 2 in an extended period of time. The performance enhancement is attributed mainly to the electrocatalytic activity of the BCO NPs dispersed on the surface of the porous PBCC electrode. Moreover, in situ Raman spectroscopy is used to probe reaction intermediates (e.g., oxygen species) on electrode surfaces, as the electrochemical properties of the electrodes are characterized under the same conditions. The direct correlation between surface chemistry and electrochemical behavior of an electrode is vital to gaining insight into the mechanisms of the electrocatalytic processes in fuel cells and electrolysers.

Ellipticity controlled dissociative double ionization of ethane by strong fields

We report the yields of all dissociation channels of ethane dications produced by strong field double ionization were measured. It was found that the branching ratios can be controlled by varying the ellipticity of laser pulses. The CH 3 + formation and H + formation channels show a clear competition, producing the highest and lowest branching ratios at ellipticity of ~0.6, respectively. With the help of theoretical calculations, such a control was attributed to the ellipticity dependent yields of different sequential ionization pathways.

Hexanitrato complexes and hybrid double perovskites of Am 3+ and Cm 3+

The synthesis and structures of the homoleptic hexanitrato complexes of Am(III) and Cm(III), [(CH 3 ) 4 N] 2 KAn(NO 3 ) 6 are reported. These compounds form a double perovskite structure type, A 2 B'BX 6 , crystallizing in the cubic space group $Fm$$\bar{3}$$m$. Furthermore, their electronic properties, as calculated using the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules, are reported and compared to their lanthanide homologues Eu(III) and Gd(III).

Accurate core excitation and ionization energies from a state-specific coupled-cluster singles and doubles approach

Here, we investigate the use of orbital-optimized references in conjunction with single-reference coupled-cluster theory with single and double substitutions (CCSD) for the study of core excitations and ionizations of 18 small organic molecules, without the use of response theory or equation-of-motion (EOM) formalisms. Three schemes are employed to successfully address the convergence difficulties associated with the coupled-cluster equations, and the spin contamination resulting from the use of a spin symmetry-broken reference, in the case of excitations. In order to gauge the inherent potential of the methods studied, an effort is made to provide reasonable basis set limit estimates for the transition energies. Overall, we find that the two best-performing schemes studied here for ΔCCSD are capable of predicting excitation and ionization energies with errors comparable to experimental accuracies. The proposed ΔCCSD schemes reduces statistical errors against experimental excitation energies by more than a factor of two when compared to the frozen-core core–valence separated (FC-CVS) EOM-CCSD approach – a successful variant of EOM-CCSD tailored towards core excitations.

Energetics of formation and stability in high pressure steam of barium lanthanide cobaltite double perovskites

Here, this study concerns energetics of formation and the stability in high water partial pressure of BaLnCo 2 O 6-δ , (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, and Gd) (BLnC) and BaGd 1-x La x Co 2 O 6-δ , where x = 0.2, 0.5, and 0.7 (BGLC) double perovskite cobaltites. Those materials are extensively studied due to their potential applications as a positrode in electrochemical devices. Therefore, their stability under such conditions is a key issue. All investigated materials are thermodynamically stable relative to binary oxides and exhibit strongly exothermic enthalpies of formation. Moreover, BaGd 0.3 La 0.7 Co 2 O 6-δ and BaGd 0.8 La 0.2 Co 2 O 6-δ remain the main perovskite structure up to 3 bars of water vapor at 400 °C. At higher steam pressure, reaching 10 bar at 300 °C, the partial decomposition to constituent oxides and hydroxides was observed. The BGLC compounds exhibit higher negative formation enthalpies in comparison to single-Ln compositions, which does not translate into higher chemical stability under high steam pressures since the BLnC series retained the main perovskite structure at higher temperatures as well as in higher water vapor pressures.

Site-specific photo-crosslinking in a double crossover DNA tile facilitated by squaraine dye aggregates: advancing thermally stable and uniform DNA nanostructures

We investigated the role of dichloro-squaraine (SQ) dye aggregates in facilitating thymine–thymine interstrand photo-crosslinking within double crossover (DX) tiles, to develop thermally stable and structurally uniform two-dimensional (2D) DNA-based nanostructures. By strategically incorporating SQ modified thymine pairs, we enabled site-selective [2 + 2] photocycloaddition under 310 nm UV light. Strong dye–dye interactions, particularly through the formation of aggregates, facilitated covalent bond formation between proximal thymines. To evaluate the impact of dye aggregation on crosslinking efficiency, ten DX tile variants with varying SQ-modified thymine positions were tested. Our results demonstrated that SQ dye aggregates significantly enhanced crosslinking, driven by precise SQ-modified thymine dimer placement within the DNA tiles. Analytical techniques, including denaturing PAGE and UV-visible spectroscopy, validated successful crosslinking in DNA tiles with multiple SQ-modified thymine pairs. This non-phototoxic method offers a potential route for creating thermally stable, homogeneous higher-order DNA–dye assemblies with potential applications in photoactive and exciton-based fields such as optoelectronics, nanoscale computing, and quantum computing. Furthermore, the insights from this study establish a foundation for further exploration of advanced DNA–dye systems, enabling the design of next-generation DNA nanostructures with enhanced functional properties.

Epitaxial heterointerfacial electron bridge synchronizes oxygen evolution activity and stability on a layered double hydroxide surface

Scalable green hydrogen production via electrocatalytic water splitting is largely restricted by the insufficient activity and stability of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts at the anode. As a class of the most active OER catalysts in alkaline electrolyzers, the application of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) remains a main challenge owing to the unstable lattice oxygen dissolution due to the dominant lattice oxygen-involving OER mechanism during long-term operation. Herein, we found that using an epitaxial hetero-interfacing nickel hydroxide (namely Ni(OH) 2 ) as an electron bridge between an active FeCo LDH and Ni foam support to form an LDH*/NFO catalyst, the electronic storage capacity around the Fermi level (-0.5 to +0.5 eV, e-D FE ) sharply increases from 0.93 per cell to 1.51 per cell. Subsequently, we demonstrate that this high e-D FE enables ceaseless and fast power injection into the kinetic process of intermediate species conversion and inhibits lattice oxygen dissolution in the active FeCo LDH. Consequently, it demonstrated a low OER overpotential of 246 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm -2 and ultrahigh stability for up to 3500 hours with an ultraslow overpotential increase rate of 9.4 × 10 -3 mV h -1 . Therefore, we developed an epitaxial hetero-interfacial electron bridging strategy to synchronize the activity and stability of available catalysts for scalable green hydrogen production via electrocatalytic water splitting.
