Development of techniques for forming segments of a parabolic solar concentrator

This report covers a comprehensive research study of Androforming, explosive forming, and stretch forming as applied to shaping a parabolic reflector segment for use in a solar furnace. Development efforts were directed toward attaining accurate part contour, and assurance of process reproducibility. The three forming processes mentioned above were investigated by qualified contractors. Three test segments formed by each method along with a detailed analysis were submitted to MSFC. It was concluded that optimum results could be obtained with the stretch forming process. The three test segments of the solar concentrator tha.t were produced by this method, and evaluated optically, revealed a maximum contour deviation of O. 76 degrees.

Substitution of stable isotopes in Chlorella

Replacement of biologically important isotopes in the alga Chlorella by corresponding heavier stable isotopes produces increasingly greater deviations from the normal cell size and changes the quality and distribution of certain cellular components. The usefulness of isotopically altered organisms increases interest in the study of such permuted organisms.

Proposed technique for vertical alignment of a crane's cable

Proposed vertical alignment technique senses the attitude of a cranes cable and displays any deviation from the vertical. The system consists of a detector assembly fixed to the boom and a display scope located in the cabin. It has potential application with either fixed-boom cranes or gantries.

Determination of the absolute contours of optical flats

Emersons procedure is used to determine true absolute contours of optical flats. Absolute contours of standard flats are determined and a comparison is then made between standard and unknown flats. Contour differences are determined by deviation of Fizeau fringe.

Magnetically coupled emission regulator

Magnetic coupling between input and power handling circuits isolates high voltage. A feedback regulator samples the ion source bias current and provides deviation signals to a magnetic amplifier pulse modulator. The pulse modulator controls the dc to ac power inverter which in turn, controls the emission current.

Improved method of optical design

Optical system designed by third order aberration theory is significantly improved by placing it into a ray deviation design program composed of two distinct computer programs. Tests were conducted on telescope systems, an ultraviolet relay lens, and a four lens corrector system.

Survey of the Relationship Between Theory and Experiment for Convective Heat Transfer From Rocket Combustion Gases

The problem of predicting the distribution of heat flux in a rocket engine is complicated by a flow field and thermodynamics so perturbed by as yet indescribable combustion effects that it continues to be necessary to utilize a simplified theoretical model against which to compare experimental results in order to gain insight. The most successful model applied to this problem is that of a compressible, turbulent, accelerating boundary layer flow with an arbitrary point of origin, and chemical reaction restricted to equilibrium recombination or diffusion-limited recombination on a catalytic wall. Analysis of this model was not possible without making several assumptions about the nature of the skin friction coefficient relationship and Reynold's analogy in an accelerating boundary layer flow. The paper summarizes the analysis of this model (together with detailed treatment of the special problems of variable properties, chemical reaction, and sources of transport properties), and describes several closed-form equations that have also been developed and applied to the problem. Described are results of several experiments with hot air flow made for the purpose of checking the validity of the assumptions in the boundary layer analysis. Most significant, however, are presentations of sample distributions of local heat flux measured in rocket engines operating with a wide range of conditions, propellants, injectors and sizes. When compared with predictions, these data show the significant range of deviation in heat flux that results from the combustion effects and which precludes a generally accurate prediction theory or correlation equation until the combustion process itself is correlated.

Determination of diffusion lengths in silicon by an X-ray method

By calibrating X-ray machine with cells of known diffusion lengths, measurements on test cells can be madeate rate of one every two minutes with standard deviation of less than two percent. test cells are compared with calibration cells whose diffusion lengths have been measured by an electron beam method.

Stability of structural rings under uniformly distributed radial loads

Energy method analysis establishes parameters governing stability of circular rings acted upon by constant, uniformly distributed loads. Energy method is used so that nonlinear behavior of structure before buckling can be accounted for. Method affords conceptually superior basis for analyzing the axisymmetric deviation mode.
