Electrochemical Model Assessment of Strategies for Fast Charge

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has identified extreme fast charging (XFC) as a critical challenge that must be overcome in order to achieve widespread adoption of electric vehicles. DOE’s eXtreme Fast Charge and Cell Evaluation (XCEL) program seeks to reduce charge time to 10-15 minutes for a 200+ Wh/kg Li-ion battery. This presentation for DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Program Annual Merit Review summarizes the XCEL team’s work developing electrochemical models to interpret data and applying them to identify best strategies to achieve fast charge. Strategies include advanced electrode architectures, elevated temperature charging, novel charge protocols, advanced electrolytes, thermal management and suppression of heterogeneities that cause early onset of the damaging Li plating side reaction.

Pilot-configurable information on a display unit

A small thin display unit that can be installed in the flight deck for displaying only flight crew-selected tactical information needed for the task at hand. The flight crew can select the tactical information to be displayed by means of any conventional user interface. Whenever the flight crew selects tactical information for display, the user interface sends a corresponding request for tactical information to a computer system. The computer system processes the request, including periodically retrieving measured current values or computing current values for the requested tactical parameters and returning those current tactical parameter values to the display unit for display.

High efficiency small molecule tandem photovoltaic devices

A high efficiency small molecule tandem solar cell is disclosed. The tandem cell may include a first subcell comprising a first photoactive region and a second subcell comprising a second photoactive region. The first and second photoactive regions are designed to minimize spectral overlap and maximize photocurrent. The device may further include an interconnecting layer, disposed between the first subcell and the second subcell, that is at least substantially transparent.

Idea to Deliverable: The Engineering Design Process

The engineering design process is utilized to evolve an idea into a deliverable. This progression can take years, so to experience as much of the full design process as possible, this internship period was dedicated to working on several projects in different phases of the process. The result is a completed engineering project which provides a foundation that can be used to conduct research on a system by performing experiments, collecting data, and making changes as necessary to improve the system and answer new questions.

Highly efficient small molecule multi-junction organic photovoltaic cells

A highly efficient multi junction photovoltaic device, such as a two, three, or four junction device, is disclosed. The multi-junction device may include a first subcell comprising a first photoactive region and a second subcell comprising a second photoactive region. The first and second photoactive regions are designed to minimize spectral overlap and maximize photocurrent across a broad absorption spectra, such as wavelengths ranging from 400 nm to 900 nm. The device may further include an inter-connecting layer, disposed between the first subcell and the second subcell, that is at least substantially transparent. By introducing a transparent interconnecting layer, a dual element (tandem) cell achieves a power conversion efficiency of 10.0±0.5%. By adding an additional (3rd) sub-cell that absorbs at the second order optical interference maximum within the stack. The triple junction cell significantly improves the quantum efficiency at shorter wavelengths, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 11.1±0.5%. Adding additional sub-cells has been shown to increase power conversion efficiency above 12%.

Physics-Informed Machine Learning of Dynamical Systems for Efficient Bayesian Inference

Although the no-u-turn sampler (NUTS) is a widely adopted method for performing Bayesian inference, it requires numerous posterior gradients which can be expensive to compute in practice. Recently, there has been a significant interest in physics-based machine learning of dynamical (or Hamiltonian) systems and Hamiltonian neural networks (HNNs) is a noteworthy architecture. But these types of architectures have not been applied to solve Bayesian inference problems efficiently. We propose the use of HNNs for performing Bayesian inference efficiently without requiring numerous posterior gradients. We introduce latent variable outputs to HNNs (L-HNNs) for improved expressivity and reduced integration errors. We integrate L-HNNs in NUTS and further propose an online error monitoring scheme to prevent sampling degeneracy in regions where L-HNNs may have little training data. We demonstrate L-HNNs in NUTS with online error monitoring consider several complex high-dimensional posterior densities and compare its performance to NUTS.
