HfTa_BCC_SolidSolution_128atoms_VASP6

We performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations for body-centered-cubic (BCC) structures with 128 lattices sites of solid solution binary alloys hafnium-tantalum (Hf-Ta). The electronic structures of alloys have been calculated using Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package (VASP). Within this package the DFT approach is used to reduce many-body Schrodinger equation to set of single particle Kohn-Sham (KS) equations. The generalized electronic exchange-correlation functional is described by generalized gradient approximation with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof parametrization. The electron-ion interactions is described by pseudopotentials developed within the plane-wave basis projector augmented-wave (PAW) approach. These pseudopotentials are available at the VASP portal (http://cms.mpi.univie.ac.at/vasp/). Our calculations have been run with the pseudopotentials treating s and p semi-core states as valence in case for the elements Hf and Ta. The electronic densities and potentials are expanded over plane-waves with energy cutoff of 350 eV. 2x2x2 k-mesh and normal precision were used. The alloys were modeled by supercell containing 128 randomly distributed atoms. At initial step the atoms occupy perfect BCC lattice sites. This initial structure was optimized until energy changes less than 1e-6 eV, while forces acting on atoms don't exceed 1e-2 eV/angstrom. The electron-ion interaction is described by PAW pseudopotentials. The calculations have been collected by sampling chemical compositions across the entire compositional range. The chemical compositions have been sampled by progressively changing the number of atoms per constituent by 4. For each chemical composition of binaries and ternaries, the first-principle calculations have been run for 100 randomized arrangements of the constituents on the BCC lattice sites. We collected data for a total of 3,040 randomized atomic structures over 31 chemical compositions. Further methodological and structural information is contained in the dataset README.txt file.

Diabatic Valence-Hole States in the C 2 Molecule: “Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again”

Despite the long history of spectroscopic studies of the C$_2$ molecule, fundamental questions about its chemical bonding are still being hotly debated. The complex electronic structure of C$_2$ is a consequence of its dense manifold of near-degenerate, low-lying electronic states. A global multi-state diabatic model is proposed here to disentangle the numerous configuration interactions within four symmetry manifolds of C$_2$ ($^{1}\Pi_g$, $^{3}\Pi_g$, $^{1}\Sigma_u^+$, and $^{3}\Sigma_u^+$). The key concept of our model is the existence of two "valence-hole" configurations, $2\sigma_g^22\sigma_u^11\pi_{u}^33\sigma_g^2$ for $^{1,3}\Pi_g$ states and $2\sigma_g^22\sigma_u^11\pi_{u}^43\sigma_g^1$ for $^{1,3}\Sigma_u^+$ states that derive from $3\sigma_g\leftarrow2\sigma_u$ electron promotion. The lowest-energy state from each of the four C$_2$ symmetry species is dominated by this type of valence-hole configuration at its equilibrium internuclear separation. Finally, as a result of their large binding energy (nominal bond order of 3) and correlation with the 2s$^2$2p$^2$+2s2p$^3$ separated-atom configurations, the presence of these valence-hole configurations has a profound impact on the $global$ electronic structure and unimolecular dynamics of C$_2$.

Enabling elliptically polarized high harmonic generation with short cross polarized laser pulses

Abstract Enabling elliptically polarized high-order harmonics overcomes a historical limitation in the generation of this highly nonlinear process in atomic, molecular and optical physics with applications in other branches. Here, we shed new light on a controversy between experimental observations and theoretical predictions on the possibility to generate harmonics with large ellipticity using two bichromatic laser pulses which are linearly polarized in orthogonal directions. Results of numerical calculations confirm the previous experimental data that in short laser pulses even harmonics with large ellipticity can be obtained for the interaction of such cross-polarized laser pulses with atoms initially in a s - or p -state, while odd harmonics have low ellipticity. The amount of the ellipticity can be controlled via the relative carrier-envelope phase of the pulses, their intensity ratio and the duration of the pulses.

The Quantum Nature and Mass of the Neutrino. FY20 Annual Laboratory Continuation Progress Report

Over the last 100 years we have learned a much about the neutrino, but there remain interesting questions about this weakly interacting particle. In particular, at LLNL we are developing experiments to measure the mass and the quantum nature of the neutrino. The 2015 long range plan recommended tonne-scale neutrinoless double beta decay experiments as the top new project priority and this experiment will target the quantum nature of the neutrino. The LLNL team is motivated and focused on developing the best technology for this experiment which is a liquid xenon time project chamber called nEXO. On a longer time scale, LLNL is also developing technology to measure the neutrino mass with tritium decay experiments. Work on nEXO at LLNL started in 2015 with an LDRD and program development funds to develop the nEXO concept, publish sensitivity predictions, explore alternatives and risks, and to build a credible project team and this effort is on going. In addition, we received research funding from DOE-SC NP and LLNL manages pre-conceptual R&D for the nEXO collaboration a portion of which is executed at LLNL. The Project 8 effort is solely funded by LLNL LDRD, and ends this year. A second LDRD effort is focused on repurposing cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy for eV-scale X-ray detection. This second effort, while separated from Project 8, still has scientific and technical commonalities with Project 8. The funding for this X-ray detection effort will continue for one more year. LLNL has a long history of building large projects, science projects and time projection chambers, but nEXO is in fact the first project of this scale that LLNL is prepared to lead for DOE-SC NP.We have the tools, skills, people and motivation to make nEXO a reality. The current program development dollars are used to prepare the nEXO concept for down select and CD1. These internal LLNL dollars pay for a number of things including project staff to organize the nEXO collaboration for the various reviews that lie ahead, to develop the draft plans and structure to manage the project as well as setting up an external advisory committee. The current LDRD is exploring alternatives that effect the risk profile as well as possible performance improvements. The DOE-SC NP base funding is targeted at simulation and analysis of the nEXO concept in preparation for the down select and refinement of the understanding of the detector as well as scientific effort on the large xenon test stand (LXTS) that will burn down one of the largest risks to the nEXO project. Lastly, LLNL is leading the pre-conceptual R&D effort and managing the funds for the nEXO collaboration. The results of this effort are reported elsewhere, but the scope of this executed at LLNL will be reported here and is primarily the engineering and construction of the LXTS experiment. The primary technical contribution of LLNL to the Project 8 concept is the formation and study of atomic tritium. Atomic tritium is necessary for Project 8 to reach the ultimate sensitivity. LLNL has considerable experience with tritium and is well suited for this crucial work. Although the focus of this work is strictly fundamental science, there has already been one significant spinoff to develop a new means to measure radio xenon in the air

ORNL_AISD_NiPt

This dataset describes the nickel-platinum (NiPt) solid solution binary alloy, where the two constituent elements nickel (Ni) and platinum (Pt) are randomly placed on the face centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure, with the lattice constant of 3.840 angstroms. The dataset comprises data for three different sizes of the crystal structure: 256 atoms, 864 atoms, and 2,048 atoms, each of which contains 1900 configurations. For each size of the crystal structure, the data set was generated for concentrations ranging from 0at% of Pt to 100at% of Pt in the NiPt binary system, with increasing the concentration of Pt in the system every 5at%. For each one of the chemical compositions, 100 random configurations were generated, each with a different random seed. Each of the output files contains the mass, type, atomic coordinates, energy per atom, and forces in x, y, and z directions respectively. For each atomic configuration, the output was collected every 150 steps during the minimization stage and every 1000 steps during the replica exchange stage. Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS) [1], which is a molecular dynamics code, was used to generate data for NiPt alloy. The simulation used the interatomic potential for NiPt binary system MEAM_LAMMPS_KimSeolJi_2017_PtNi__MO_020840179467_001 [3] from the OpenKIM library (Open Knowledgebase of Interatomic Models) [2]. This potential was developed based on the second nearest-neighbor modified embedded-atom method (2NN MEAM). The simulation process begins with the generation of the random NiPt structure and follows with the short minimization and replica exchange simulation. The minimization procedure adjusts atomic coordinates and performs energy minimization, which typically leads to a local potential energy minimum. The method used for the minimization was the conjugate gradient algorithm. A short replica exchange (parallel tempering) simulation involves four replicas (ensembles) of a system and follows the minimization stage. Multiple snapshots of the configuration were collected during the minimization and replica exchange stages. NiPt alloy is interesting due to its magnetic and charge transfer properties [4]. The data is provided in three compressed zipped folders: atoms256.zip, atoms864.zip, atoms2048.zip Each zipped folder contains the data that describes crystals of size 256 atoms, 864 atoms, and 2,048 atoms respectively. Each one of the three zipped folders contains the data structured in the following way: -Ni_ground_state.cfg --> atomic configuration for the pure nickel -Pt_ground_state.cfg --> atomic configuration for the pure platinum -Pt#_filtered --> folders containing atomic configurations for #at% concentration of platinum. The folder contains 100 atomic configurations, each saved in a subfolder. Each subfolder named config* is associated with a specific atomic configuration. Each of these subfolders contains files with .cfg format, corresponding to outputs for each atomic configuration The total number of atomic configurations contained in atoms256.zip is 65,046. The total number of atomic configurations contained in atoms864.zip is 63,936. The total number of atomic configurations contained in atoms2048.zip is 61,997. The total number of atomic configurations spanned by the entire dataset is 190,979. Enabling Predictive Scale-Bridging Simulations through Active Learning (Institutional Computing Annual Report (Project w20_alscalebridging)) [Slides]

The goal of this project was to develop, demonstrate, and provide a new capability to achieve greater physical fidelity in large-scale simulations, rather than the usual brute-force increases in the number of mesh elements or particles. This was done by using machine learning (ML) techniques to develop emulators for subscale physics that can be used in coarse-scale continuum simulations, trained on fine-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that are launched on-the-fly via active learning. raditional inertial confinement fusion (ICF) simulations rely on numerical diffusion to simulate molecular effects such as non-local transport and mixing without truly accounting for molecular interactions; our approach directly accounts for this physics.

Rabi spectroscopy of the clock transition in thulium atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice

The clock transition at a wavelength of 1.14 μm in thulium atoms in an optical lattice in the Lamb – Dick regime is studied. The capture of thulium atoms makes it possible to suppress completely both the transition broadening due to the first-order Doppler effect and the shift of the transition frequency caused by the recoil effect. The excitation spectra of sideband oscillation frequencies and Rabi oscillations of population between the clock transition levels upon resonance excitation are investigated. (paper)

Studies of Autoionizing States relevant to Dielectronic Recombinaton

Doubly excited autoionizing states of alkaline earth atoms are explored by multistep laser spectroscopy, which is precisely the inverse process to dielectronic recombination, the recombination of hot electron with ions via an autoionizing state. Dielectronic recombination is an important mechanism leading to power loss in high temperature plasmas. Measurements included the autoionization rates of atoms in zero field and in the presence of electric and magnetic fields, as might be encountered in a plasma. To mimic the effects of the rapidly varying fields of electron collisions measurements were made in the presence of microwave electric fields. These experiments are analogous to experiments conducted with combined high intensity infrared and vuv laser fields, In laser/microwave experiments the effects of laser pulse envelope timing relative to the microwave phase were explored extensively.

HydraGNN_Predictive_GFM_2024 - Ensemble of predictive graph foundation models for ground state atomistic materials modeling

We provide the ensemble of fifteen pre-trained graph foundation models (GFMs) for atomistic materials modeling applications. Each one of the fifteen GFMs has been trained on five open-source datasets that (once aggregated) amount to over 154 million atomistic structures, which cover over two-thirds of the natural elements of the periodic table and that comprises a broad set of organic and inorganic compounds. This vast set of atomistic structures comprises ground state configurations that are dynamically stable (i.e., equilibrated structures with atomic forces approximately close to zero values) as well as dynamically unstable structures (i.e., non-equilibrium structures with non-negligible non-zero values of atomic forces). The ensemble of datasets aggregated does NOT include excited states. The datasets have been curated to remove atomistic structures with spectral norm of the force tensor above 100 eV/angstrom. Moreover, a linear term of the energy was computed for each dataset using a linear regression model that uses the chemical concentration of each natural element as regressor. The linear term predicted by the linear regression model has been subtracted from each original energy value to perform a re-alignment of the energy values across different electronic structures approximation theories performed to generate the diverse multi-source, multi-fidelity datasets. The folder "ADIOS_files" contains the set of pre-processed datasets in Adaptable I/O System (ADIOS) format (https://www.exascaleproject.org/research-project/adios/) that have been used for the development and training of GFMs in this work. The "ADIOS_files" directory contains 6 sub-directories named as follows: - ANI1x-v3.bp - MPTrj-v3.bp - OC2020-20M-v3.bp - OC2020-v3.bp - OC2022-v3.bp - qm7x-v3.bp Each sub-directory contains the pre-processed datasets converted in Adaptable I/O System (ADIOS) format (https://www.exascaleproject.org/research-project/adios/) that have been used to the development, training, and performance testing of the ensemble go predictive graph foundation models. Each GFM was developed using HydraGNN (https://github.com/ORNL/HydraGNN) as underlying graph neural network (GNN) architecture. The multi-task learning (MTL) capability of HydraGNN was used to simultaneously train the GFMs on labeled values for direct predictions of energy (a total system property of an atomistic structure that measures the chemical stability) and atomic forces (an atomic level property of an atomistic structure that measures the dynamical stability). The hyper parameters of the GFM have been tuned using scalable hyperparameter optimization (HPO) algorithms implemented in the software DeepHyper (https://github.com/deephyper/deephyper). The pre-training of each HPO trial was performed using distributed data parallelism (DDP) to scale the training across 128 compute nodes of the exascale OLCF supercomputer Frontier. Each HPO trial was trained only for 10 epochs and an early stopping was performed to avoid wasting significant computational resources on GNN architectures that were clearly underperforming. For each HPO trial, the 'omnistat' tool developed by (AMD Research - Advanced Micro Device) was used to measure the total energy consumption in kWh. The ensemble of GFMs was obtained by selecting the fifteen best performing HPO trials. Four models have been selected for their clear advantage in accuracy, and these are the GFMs with IDs 229, 156, 147, 260. Additional eleven models have been selected based on judicious balance between accuracy and energy consumption needed for training, and these are the GFMs with IDs 165, 78, 137, 1, 175, 171, 181, 67, 179, 167, 351. Each selected GFM of the ensemble was continued to cumulate a total of at most 30 epochs. In some cases, the total number of epochs actually performed was les than 30 due to two combined factors: (1) the size of the GFM (i.e., the number of model parameters to train) and (2) the total wall-clock time for which the computational resources could be allocated on OLCF-Frontier. The "Ensemble_of_models" directory contains 15 sub-directories named as follows: - gfm_0.229 - gfm_0.156 - gfm_0.147 - gfm_0.260 - gfm_0.165 - gfm_0.78 - gfm_0.137 - gfm_0.1 - gfm_0.175 - gfm_0.171 - gfm_0.181 - gfm_0.67 - gfm_0.179 - gfm_0.167 - gfm_0.351 Each one of these sub-directories refers to one of the fifteen HPO trials that have been selected to continue the pre-training with at most 30 epochs. With each sub-directory associated with a specific HPO trial, the following files can be found: - config.json: file for argument parsing to develop and train an HydraGNN architecture - gfm_0.ID_epoch_N.pk: file with model parameters for HPO ID trial after N epochs of training The ensemble of fifteen GFM architectures was used for (1) ensemble averaging to stabilize the predictions of energy and atomic forces after pre-training for post-processing analysis and (2) ensemble uncertainty quantification (UQ). The code used to develop, pre-train, and load the pre-trained models for post-processing analysis is available on the ORNL-GitHub at the following link: https://github.com/ORNL/HydraGNN/tree/Predictive_GFM_2024

Activating dislocation mediated plasticity in boron carbide through Al-doping

Dislocation slip, deformation twinning, phase transformations, and fast fracture are energy dissipation mechanisms that accommodate mechanical loading in materials. The energetically unfavorable formation of dislocation attributes to the ease of cracking and the low damage tolerance observed in superhard ceramics, notably boron carbide. Here, this work demonstrates that room temperature dislocation slip can be enabled in boron carbide by altering its chemistry through Al doping. The activation of dislocation slip is mechanistically explained by quantum mechanics simulations and electron microscopy, which indicate that strain energy is released through basal icosahedral slip facilitated by icosahedral rotation and chain bond breaking and reconfiguring. The new insight gained through this work suggests that atomic doping could be an effective strategy to tune deformation mechanisms in boron carbide, which provides a significant potential for limiting amorphization and catastrophic failure, and opens a new strategy to enhance damage tolerance in brittle ceramics.

Fermi Gases in Bichromatic Superlattices

The purpose of the program is the broad study of designer materials made of ultra-cold atoms and light, which provides new paradigms for emulating exotic layered systems. Bichromatic superlattices enable control and study of both dimensionality and dispersion in layered, strongly correlated Fermi gases, to model high-temperature superfluidity/superconductivity. Most layered materials are quasi-two-dimensional, neither two-dimensional, like a sheet, nor three-dimensional, like a gas, but somewhere in between. In quasi-2D layers with an unequal number of spin-up and spin-down electrons, particularly strong attraction between pairs of electrons with opposite spins is predicted to achieve the highest possible superconducting transition temperatures. To understand these materials, we emulate them with a layered, ultra-cold Fermi gas of 6Li atoms, magnetically tuned near a collisional (Feshbach) resonance, where precise control of the attraction, spin-composition, dimensionality and dispersion provides new tests of theory. The primary goals are of the program are: (1) Elucidation of the effects of dimensionality and confining potential shape on the enhancement of high-temperature superfluidity in a layered, strongly correlated Fermi gases; (2) Control of dispersion and the study of tunable Dirac points in one dimension.

Exact-two-component block-localized wave function: A simple scheme for the automatic computation of relativistic ΔSCF

Block-localized wave function is a useful method for optimizing constrained determinants. In this article, we extend the generalized block-localized wave function technique to relativistic two-component framework. Optimization of excited state determinants for two-component wave functions presents a unique challenge because the excited state manifold is often quite dense with degenerate states. Furthermore, we test the degree to which certain symmetries result naturally from the ΔSCF optimization such as time reversal symmetry and symmetry with respect to the total angular momentum operator on a series of atomic systems. Variational optimizations may often break symmetry in order to lower the overall energy, just as unrestricted Hartree-Fock breaks spin symmetry. Overall, we demonstrate that time reversal symmetry is roughly maintained when using Hartree-Fock, but less so when using Kohn-Sham density functional theory. Additionally, maintaining total angular momentum symmetry appears to be system dependent and not guaranteed. Finally, we were able to trace the breaking of total angular momentum symmetry to the relaxation of core electrons.

Each of these subfolders contains files with .cfg format, corresponding to outputs for each atomic configuration The total number of atomic configurations contained in atoms108.zip is 66,132. This dataset is an extension to the dataset ORNL_AISD_NiPt [5] that has been previously released with crystal structures of 256 atoms, 864 atoms, and 2,048 atoms, with the same methodology for data collection. Modeling of transient interference phenomena in colinear laser spectroscopy

Colinear laser spectroscopy of fast atomic beams has been established as one of the main tools to perform precision experiments with atoms containing short-lived nuclei. Although highly sensitive, the spectral resolution of these techniques is typically limited to several MHz. Here, we study the use of transient interference phenomena to potentially improve the experimental resolution. Previous attempts to implement Ramsey-type measurements with fast beams were limited by the lack of understanding of the observed line shapes. Additionally, by using a simple model, we provide a satisfactory description of the previously observed line shapes and propose alternative experimental schemes to improve the resolution in fast ion-beam experiments.
