As‐Cast Ternary Organic Solar Cells Based on an Asymmetric Side‐Chains Featured Acceptor with Reduced Voltage Loss and 14.0% Efficiency

Abstract A new small‐molecule nonfullerene acceptor based on the benzo[1,2‐ b :4,5‐ b ′]dithiophene (BDT) fused central core with asymmetrical alkoxy and thienyl side chains, namely TOBDT , is designed and synthesized. The alkoxy unit helps narrow the bandgap, and thienyl side chain helps enhance the intermolecular interaction. As a result, TOBDT is suitable to match the deep‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of polymer donor PM6 . Then, a strong crystalline acceptor IDIC is introduced as the third component to fabricate as‐cast nonfullerene ternary devices to achieve absorption and morphology control. Addition of IDIC not only mixes well with TOBDT but modulates the morphology of the blend film, which helps to balance the charge transport properties and reduce the photovoltage loss of ternary devices. All these contribute to synergetic improvement of J sc , V oc , and fill factor parameters, leading to a power conversion efficiency of 14.0% for the as‐cast fullerene‐free ternary device.

Ultralow Voltage Manipulation of Ferromagnetism

Spintronic elements based on spin transfer torque have emerged with potential for on-chip memory, but they suffer from large energy dissipation due to the large current densities required. In contrast, an electric-field-driven magneto-electric storage element can operate with capacitive displacement charge and potentially reach 1-10 µJ cm -2 switching operation. In this paper, magneto-electric switching of a magnetoresistive element is shown, operating at or below 200 mV, with a pathway to get down to 100 mV. A combination of phase detuning is utilized via isovalent La substitution and thickness scaling in multiferroic BiFeO 3 to scale the switching energy density to ≈10 µJ cm -2 . This work provides a template to achieve attojoule-class nonvolatile memories.

Stabilizing the Solid‐Electrolyte Interphase with Polyacrylamide for High‐Voltage Aqueous Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract The introduction of “water‐in‐salt” electrolyte (WiSE) concept opens a new horizon to aqueous electrochemistry that is benefited from the formation of a solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI). However, such SEI still faces multiple challenges, including dissolution, mechanical damaging, and incessant reforming, which result in poor cycling stability. Here, we report a polymeric additive, polyacrylamide (PAM) that effectively stabilizes the interphase in WiSE. With the addition of 5 molar % PAM to 21 mol kg −1 LiTFSI electrolyte, a LiMn 2 O 4 ∥L‐TiO 2 full cell exhibits enhanced cycling stability with 86 % capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1 C. The formation mechanism and evolution of PAM‐assisted SEI was investigated using operando small angle neutron scattering and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which reveal that PAM minimizes the presence of free water molecules at the anode/electrolyte interface, accelerates the TFSI − anion decomposition, and densifies the SEI.
