Light monitoring system for the lead tungstate calorimeter in Hall D at Jefferson Lab

A new electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1596 lead tungstate (PbWO 4 ) scintillating crystals has been constructed for the GlueX detector in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. The calorimeter is equipped with a light monitoring system that uses light-emitting diodes. The light monitoring system was fabricated, installed, and integrated into the GlueX trigger system. It was successfully operated during detector commissioning and data collection, providing monitoring of the detector response and verification of the calibration with a precision better than 1%. In conclusion, the paper describes the design, installation, and performance of the light monitoring system.

SIESTA a Fatigue Solution: User's and Theory Manual

This report documents the fatigue code SIESTA that has been used for recently here at Sandia National Laboratories. It is written in two parts: the first as a user manual and the second as a theory manual. Currently employed in SIESTA are stress-life cycle approaches. Clients have requested the use of standards in particular analyses; therefore, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Boiler Pressure Vessel Code fatigue standards have been implemented. These include an elastic, an elastic-plastic, and a weld fatigue method. All three methods use a Max-Min cycle counting method that is appropriate for non-proportional loading. A Signed von Mises method that used a Rainflow Cycle Counting Method is also implemented. The Signed von Mises with the Rainflow Cycle Counting Method is appropriate for proportional loading. Several verification examples are noted and include comparisons to experimental data.

A semi-automated system for plotting and computer cataloging of remote sensing imagery

Description of a computer-assisted system for plotting and descriptor-cataloging of aerial imagery - an ingredient of the aerial image data handling system of the NASA Earth Resources Aircraft Project (ERAP). The system under consideration uses two graphic tablets linked interactively with a digital computer as input devices for deriving frame coordinates by correlating image points to map points. The various software programs and operating modes facilitate a semiautomatic plotting of an image by selecting two or more points within the image for matching with map details. The computer performs the scaling and orientation transformations for the calculation of the center and corner coordinates of the frame. Twenty five other descriptors for each frame are fed into a computerized data base requiring a minimum operator's time for verification and correction.

An investigation of heat pipe meniscus heat transfer

The use of grooved evaporator surfaces in heat pipes has increased in popularity in the past few years primarily due to the reproducibility achievable with grooved walls and the relatively low costs of the threading or extrusion processes involved in their production. The present study combines both analyses and experiments on square groove geometries, with special emphasis on overcoming the limitations of earlier analyses with finite-difference methods and groove-fillet hydrodynamic simplifications. The groove fillet, which has in previous analyses been assumed constant in radius of curvature, is permitted to change in thickness and curvature consistent with hydrodynamics and heat loss from the groove. A model is developed for accurate determination of the effect of constriction resistance on groove performance. The grooved-surface tests to be conducted are briefly described which will provide data under closely controlled operation to allow comparison and verification of the analyses.

Advanced rotorcraft technology: Task force report

The technological needs and opportunities related to future civil and military rotorcraft were determined and a program plan for NASA research which was responsive to the needs and opportunities was prepared. In general, the program plan places the primary emphasis on design methodology where the development and verification of analytical methods is built upon a sound data base. The four advanced rotorcraft technology elements identified are aerodynamics and structures, flight control and avionic systems, propulsion, and vehicle configurations. Estimates of the total funding levels that would be required to support the proposed program plan are included.

Determination of load sequence effects on the degradation and failure of composite materials

A theoretical model was established to predict the fatigue behavior of composite materials, with emphasis placed on predictions of the degradation of residual strength and residual stiffness during fatigue cycling. The model parameters were evaluated from three test series including static strength fatigue life and residual strength tests. The tests were applied to two graphite/epoxy laminates. Load sequence effects were emphasized for both laminates and the predicted results agreed quite well with subsequent verification tests. Dynamic as well as static stiffness reduction data were collected by use of a PDP11-03 computer, which performed quite satisfactorily and permitted the recording of a substantial amount of dynamic stiffness reduction data.

Measured pressure distributions, aerodynamic coefficients and shock shapes on blunt bodies at incidence in hypersonic air and CF4

Pressure distributions, aerodynamic coefficients, and shock shapes were measured on blunt bodies of revolution in Mach 6 CF4 and in Mach 6 and Mach 10 air. The angle of attack was varied from 0 deg to 20 deg in 4 deg increments. Configurations tested were a hyperboloid with an asymptotic angle of 45 deg, a sonic-corner paraboloid, a paraboloid with an angle of 27.6 deg at the base, a Viking aeroshell generated in a generalized orthogonal coordinate system, and a family of cones having a 45 deg half-angle with spherical, flattened, concave, and cusp nose shapes. Real-gas effects were simulated for the hperboloid and paraboloid models at Mach 6 by testing at a normal-shock density ratio of 5.3 in air and 12 CF4. Predictions from simple theories and numerical flow field programs are compared with measurement. It is anticipated that the data presented in this report will be useful for verification of analytical methods for predicting hypersonic flow fields about blunt bodies at incidence.

Shuttle Tethered Aerothermodynamics Research Facility (STARFAC)

The Earth's atmosphere from 90 km to 200 km provides the last aerothermodynamics frontier. Present NASA programs which require but also can provide an understanding of the aerodynamics and aerothermodynamics of the free molecule and transition flows that exist at these altitudes are the Aeroassisted OTV, Entry Research Vehicle and the Tethered Satellite. Each of these programs provides a unique opportunity to do flight research in the rarefied upper atmosphere. However, the Tethered Satellite Program provides, because of its capability to obtain global, in-situ, steady state data, the greatest potential to: (1)define the performance of aerodynamic shapes as a function of environmental characteristics (free molecule, transition, slip flow regimes); (2)define the characteristics of the upper atmosphere and the global variability of properties such as composition temperature, pressure and density. Such data are required to accomplish the systematic development and verification of analytical prediction techniques required to support advance configuration designs.

Langley hypersonic facilities complex - Description and application

The Langley Hypersonic Facilities Complex (HFC) consists of hypersonic, blowdown wind tunnels developed and put into operation between the late 1950's and early 1970's. These facilities complement one another to presently provide ranges of Mach number from 6 to 22, unit Reynolds number from 0.1 to 15 million per foot, and normal shock density ratio from 4 to 12. Descriptions of these facilities are presented along with the testing techniques routinely used. Examples of the application of the HFC to generate data bases for proposed entry vehicles and for the verification of computer codes are given. Plans to upgrade the facilities to improve flow quality, productivity, capability and reliability are discussed.

Turbine airfoil film cooling

Emphasis is placed on developing more accurate analytical models for predicting turbine airfoil external heat transfer rates. Performance goals of new engines require highly refined, accurate design tools to meet durability requirements. In order to obtain improvements in analytical capabilities, programs are required which focus on enhancing analytical techniques through verification of new models by comparison with relevant experimental data. The objectives of the current program are to develop an analytical approach, based on boundary layer theory, for predicting the effects of airfoil film cooling on downstream heat transfer rates and to verify the resulting analytical method by comparison of predictions with hot cascade data obtained under this program.
