The effect of adiabatic focusing upon charged-particle propagation in random magnetic fields

The charged particles considered are scattered by random fields while they propagate along the diverging lines of force of a spatially inhomogeneous guiding field. Their longitudinal transport is described in terms of the eigenfunctions of a Sturm-Liouville operator which incorporates the effect of adiabatic focusing along with that of scattering. The relaxation times and characteristic velocities which appear in this matrix formulation of the transport problem are graphed and tabulated. Explicit formulas which describe the particle-density profile that results from a localized impulsive injection are derived for two different regimes. In the first regime, where focusing is relatively weak, a diffusive mode of propagation is dominant, but coherent modes are also present, and they become prominent as the intensity of focusing increases. In the second regime, where focusing is strong and where diffusion does not occur, the propagation is purely coherent. The existence of this supercoherent mode of particle transport opens up many possibilities for the interpretation of astrophysical phenomena.

Optical mass memories

Optical and magnetic variants in the design of trillion-bit read/write memories are compared and tabulated. Components and materials suitable for a random access read/write nonmoving memory system are examined, with preference given to holography and photoplastic materials. Advantages and deficiencies of photoplastics are reviewed. Holographic page composer design, essential features of an optical memory with no moving parts, fiche-oriented random access memory design, and materials suitable for an efficient photoplastic fiche are considered. The optical variants offer advantages in lower volume and weight at data transfer rates near 1 Mbit/sec, but power drain is of the same order as for the magnetic variants (tape memory, disk memory). The mechanical properties of photoplastic film materials still leave much to be desired.

Spectra and Fabry-Perot interferometry of AG Carinae and the nebula

Observations of the variable P Cygni-type supergiant and the unique ring nebula around it were made in 1974. Line identifications are tabulated, and an estimated electron density of 1700 per cu cm is combined with a radio flux density to derive a nebular mass of 0.18 (plus or minus 0.04) solar mass on the basis of a distance of 2 kpc. From the data, some ideas of the age and kinematics of the nebula are offered, tracing the evolution of P Cygni supergiants from the youthful prototype past the nebular stage of AG Carinae into more typical, relative old age without recognizable nebular envelopes.

Kinematics and spectra of planetary nebulae with O VI-sequence nuclei

Spectral features of NGC 5189 and NGC 6905 are tabulated. Fabry-Perot profiles around H alpha and O III lambda 5007 of NGC 5189, NGC 6905, NGC 246, and NGC 1535, are illustrated. The latter planetary nebula is a non-O VI-sequence, comparison object of high excitation. The kinematics of the four planetary nebulae are simply analyzed. Discussion of these data is motivated by the possibility of collisional excitation by high-speed ejecta from broad-lined O VI-sequence nuclei, and by the opportunity to make a comparison with conditions in the supernova remnant or ring nebula, G2.4 + 1.4, which contains an O VI-sequence nucleus of Population I.

Neutral hydrogen in the direction of the Small Magellatic Cloud and the limits of an extragalactic soft X-ray flux

Previously reported X-ray data from the vicinity of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) have been reanalyzed using H I data from a more detailed and sensitive 21-cm survey of this region. The results support the previous conclusion: assuming that the interstellar material absorbs according to the cross sections of Brown and Gould (1970), at least 75 per cent of the observed 0.25-keV X-ray flux is of local origin. The corollary problem of placing a cosmologically useful upper limit on the extragalactic flux will be difficult to solve until the behavior of the local component is better understood; but if the local flux is isotropic, a 3-sigma upper limit of 240 photons per (sq cm s sr keV) at 0.25 keV may be placed on a flux originating beyond the SMC. Tables of H I column density are given for an area 30 deg by 30 deg about the SMC. The high-velocity component, presumably associated with the Magellanic Cloud system, and the galactic disk component are tabulated separately.

Advanced composite rudders for DC-10 aircraft: Design, manufacturing, and ground tests

Design synthesis, tooling and process development, manufacturing, and ground testing of a graphite epoxy rudder for the DC-10 commercial transport are discussed. The composite structure was fabricated using a unique processing method in which the thermal expansion characteristics of rubber tooling mandrels were used to generate curing pressures during an oven cure cycle. The ground test program resulted in certification of the rudder for passenger-carrying flights. Results of the structural and environmental tests are interpreted and detailed development of the rubber tooling and manufacturing process is described. Processing, tooling, and manufacturing problems encountered during fabrication of four development rudders and ten flight-service rudders are discussed and the results of corrective actions are described. Non-recurring and recurring manufacturing labor man-hours are tabulated at the detailed operation level. A weight reduction of 13.58 kg (33 percent) was attained in the composite rudder.

Review of world experience and properties of materials for encapsulation of terrestrial photovoltaic arrays

Published and unpublished information relating to encapsulation systems and materials properties was collected by searching the literature and appropriate data bases (over 1,300 documents were selected and reviewed) and by personal contacts including site and company visits. A data tabulation summarizing world experience with terrestrial photovoltaic arrays (50 installations) is presented in the report. Based on criteria of properties, processability, availability, and cost, candidate materials were identified which have potential for use in encapsulation systems for arrays with a lifetime of over 20 years high reliability, an efficiency greater than 10 percent, a total price less than $500/kW, and a production capacity of 500,000 kW/yr. The recommended materials (all commercially available) include, depending upon the device design, various borosilicate and soda-lime glasses and numerous polymerics suitable for specific encapsulation system functions.

A survey of kinetic data of compounds containing flourine

Chlorofluoromethanes may have a significant effect on the level of ozone in the atmosphere. However, the role of fluroine-containing compounds has not been examined fully. A tabulation of a search of the chemical kinetic literature published between 1953 and July 1975, is presented. The data are then evaluated with respect to acceptability and importance to the overall reaction balance in the atmosphere. Possible future research to elucidate important reaction processes is discussed.

Michigan resource inventories: Characteristics and costs of selected projects using high altitude color infrared imagery. Remote Sensing Project

The procedures and costs associated with mapping land cover/use and forest resources from high altitude color infrared (CIR) imagery are documented through an evaluation of several inventory efforts. CIR photos (1:36,000) were used to classify the forests of Mason County, Michigan into six species groups, three stocking levels, and three maturity classes at a cost of $4.58/sq. km. The forest data allow the pinpointing of marketable concentrations of selected timber types, and facilitate the establishment of new forest management cooperatives. Land cover/use maps and area tabulations were prepared from small scale CIR photography at a cost of $4.28/sq. km. and $3.03/sq. km. to support regional planning programs of two Michigan agencies. procedures were also developed to facilitate analysis of this data with other natural resource information. Eleven thematic maps were generated from Windsor Township, Michigan at a cost of $1,500 by integrating grid-geocoded land cover/use, soils, topographic, and well log data using an analytical computer program.

Table and charts of equilibrium normal-shock properties for hydrogen-helium mixtures with velocities to 70 km/sec. Volume 1: 0.95 H2-0.05 He (by volume)

Equilibrium thermodynamic and flow properties are presented in tabulated and graphical form for moving, standing, and reflected normal shock waves into hydrogen-helium mixtures representative of postulated outer planet atmospheres. These results are presented in four volumes and the volmetric compositions of the mixtures are 0.95H2-0.05He in Volume 1, 0.90H2-0.10He in Volume 2, 0.85H2-0.15He in Volume 3, and 0.75H2-0.25He in Volume 4. Properties include pressure, temperature, density, enthalpy, speed of sound, entropy, molecular-weight ratio, isentropic exponent, velocity, and species mole fractions. Incident (moving) shock velocities are varied from 4 to 70 km/sec for a range of initial pressure of 5 N/sq m to 100 kN/sq m. Results are applicable to shock-tube flows and for determining flow conditions behind the normal portion of the bow shock about a blunt body at high velocities in postulated outer planet atmospheres. The document is a revised version of the original edition of NASA SP-3085 published in 1974.

Solar plasma: Viking 1975 interplanetary spacecraft dual-frequency Doppler data

Viking 1975 interplanetary S- and X-band Doppler data are surveyed. These data show consistency with differenced range versus integrated Doppler (DRVID) data when there is solar plasma and with Faraday rotation data otherwise. An increase of solar plasma effects with decreasing sun-earth-probe (SEP) angle (approaching Mars orbit insertion) is demonstrated. The 2-way/3-way data indicate a homogeneous solar plasma structure over a 8,000-km spread. Occasional cycle slips in the data are pinpointed and tabulated.
