Packet communications in satellites with multiple-beam antennas and signal processing

A communication satellite with a multiple-beam antenna and onboard signal processing is considered for use in a 'message-switched' data relay system. The signal processor may incorporate demodulation, routing, storage, and remodulation of the data. A system user model is established and key functional elements for the signal processing are identified. With the throughput and delay requirements as the controlled variables, the hardware complexity, operational discipline, occupied bandwidth, and overall user end-to-end cost are estimated for (1) random-access packet switching; and (2) reservation-access packet switching. Other aspects of this network (eg, the adaptability to channel switched traffic requirements) are examined. For the given requirements and constraints, the reservation system appears to be the most attractive protocol.

FFT methods in signal processing of the coal interface detector radar

The FM radar for the coal interface detector, operating in the frequency band 2 to 4 GHz, is intended for the display of thicknesses between 2 cm and 20 cm. Because of such a short range, the thickness information is contained in the very few lowest spectral components of the output signal. To overcome this inconvenience, the Fourier series of the output signal was augmented to approximate a Fourier integral. This modification in the signal processing resulted in a higher spectral density, which in turn enabled an easier identification of the interface position in the laboratory. The orientation and spacing of the receiving and transmitting antennas is found to have an important influence on the system performance.

Position surveillance using one active ranging satellite and time-of-arrival of a signal from an independent satellite

Position surveillance using one active ranging/communication satellite and the time-of-arrival of signals from an independent satellite was shown to be feasible and practical. A towboat on the Mississippi River was equipped with a tone-code ranging transponder and a receiver tuned to the timing signals of the GOES satellite. A similar transponder was located at the office of the towing company. Tone-code ranging interrogations were transmitted from the General Electric Earth Station Laboratory through ATS-6 to the towboat and to the ground truth transponder office. Their automatic responses included digital transmissions of time-of-arrival measurements derived from the GOES signals. The Earth Station Laboratory determined ranges from the satellites to the towboat and computed position fixes. The ATS-6 lines-of-position were more precise than 0.1 NMi, 1 sigma, and the GOES lines-of-position were more precise than 1.6 NMi, 1 sigma. High quality voice communications were accomplished with the transponders using a nondirectional antenna on the towboat. The simple and effective surveillance technique merits further evaluation using operational maritime satellites.

Performance of the real-time array signal combiner during the Voyager mission

During the Voyager Mission each Deep Space Station used its 64 meter antenna together with a 34 meter antenna to form an array. Data were selected from the Saturn encounter period from November 2 to November 13, 1980, to analyze the signal combiner performance. A statistical analysis of the residual gain data from all of the arrayed Deep Space Stations indicates that the Real Time Combiner is operating within the designed accuracy range of 0.2 + or - 0.05 dB around the theoretical gain. A decrease in the residual gain value appears to correlate with an increase in antenna elevation, which may be directly related to the changing antenna gain with elevation. Overall, the combined signal to noise ratio is improved by an average of 0.62 + or - 0.15 dB over the 64 meter signal to noise ratio alone.

Lightning on Venus - Orbiter detection of whistler signals

Taylor et al. (1979) presented preliminary evidence for lightning on Venus, based on Pioneer Venus orbiter detection of whistler mode signals as the spacecraft first traversed the nightside ionosphere near periapsis. The initial periapsis eclipse season for the orbiter has been completed, and the plasma wave instrument obtained low-altitude nightside data for about 100 orbits. An analysis is presented of the impulsive whistler mode signals measured during these orbits, and the connection with atmospheric lightning is discussed. It is shown that the signals are detected in the 100-Hz channel when the local magnetic field is sufficiently strong and steady and when the field is oriented to point down below the ionosphere.

A seismic signal processor suitable for use with the NOAA/GOES satellite data collection system

Because of the high data-rate requirements, a practical system capable of collecting seismic information in the field and relaying it, via satellite, to a central collection point is not yet available. A seismic signal processor has been developed and tested for use with the NOAA/GOES satellite data collection system. Performance tests on recorded, as well as real time, short period signals indicate that the event recognition technique used is nearly perfect in its rejection of environmental noise and other non-seismic signals and that, with the use of solid state buffer memories, data can be acquired in many swarm situations. The design of a complete field data collection platform is discussed based on the prototype evaluation.

Application of small-signal modeling and measurement techniques to the stability analysis of an integrated switching-mode power system

Small-signal modeling techniques are used in a system stability analysis of a breadboard version of a complete functional electrical power system. The system consists of a regulated switching dc-to-dc converter, a solar-cell-array simulator, a solar-array EMI filter, battery chargers and linear shunt regulators. Loss mechanisms in the converter power stage, including switching-time effects in the semiconductor elements, are incorporated into the modeling procedure to provide an accurate representation of the system without requiring frequency-domain measurements to determine the damping factor. The small-signal system model is validated by the use of special measurement techniques which are adapted to the poor signal-to-noise ratio encountered in switching-mode systems. The complete electrical power system with the solar-array EMI filter is shown to be stable over the intended range of operation.

Solar cycle signal in air temperature in North America - Amplitude, gradient, phase and distribution

The considered investigation was motivated by three factors. One is related to an extension of single-channel MESA to multi-channel by Strand (1977), Morf et al. (1978), and Jones (1978). MESA is a high-resolution signal processing and spectrum analysis technique due to Burg (1975). The considered developments resulted in the discovery of the 11-year solar cycle signal in the change of the length of day by Currie (1980, 1981). They also led Currie (1981) to study the phase spectrum of the 11-year term in height H of sea level. The investigation tries to clarify the phase relations among the involved parameters. The second factor is connected with an application of the linear time domain technique used by Currie (1981) to temperature records to obtain more accurate information regarding the signal amplitude. The third factor of motivation is related to increases in the number of stations available for an analysis, the greater average length of the records, and the more accurate data set.

Position surveillance using one active ranging satellite and time-of-arrival of a signal from an independent satellite

A satellite-aided mobile communication service was tested for position surveillance, with an automatic responder circuit connected between the vehicle receiver and transmitter, and a receiver coded for signals from another satellite. Using the ATS-6 and GOES satellites, a tone-code ranging transponder was connected between the receiver and transmitter, and a 468 MHz receiver was connected to the responder unit for passive reception of the 100 bit per second timing and data signal. Results showed lines of position derived from the active ranging through ATS-6 to be accurate to approximately 0.1 nautical mile, while the NOAA-GOES signals were accurate to about 1.6 miles. The active ranging bandwidth was 2.44 kHz, and the integration time was 0.1 second, while the limitation on accuracy was the 100 Hz bandwidth. This technique of position surveillance was concluded to be feasible and simple to operate, providing needed, good quality communications to the inland waterways industry.

Proposed experimental studies for assessing ionospheric perturbations on SPS uplink pilot beam signal

The microwave beam of the proposed Solar Power Satellite (SPS) at geosynchronous altitude is to be formed and directed by phase information derived from a pilot signal at 2.45 GHz transmitted from ground and received in a number of module locations on the SPS antenna. The frequency of the pilot signal was chosen to be sufficiently low as to avoid the effects of strong scattering by turbulence in the neutral atmosphere and yet high enough to avoid any possible refractive effects caused by the ionized upper atmosphere. The propagation of the uplink pilot signal through the ionosphere which contains natural and possibly some artificial irregularities, was studied.

Signal analysis of voltage noise in welding arcs

Gas tungsten arc welds were made on low alloy steel plates to which intentional defects (discontinuities) were imposed. Disruption of shielding gas, welding over surface films, and tack welds produce changes in what is otherwise a relatively uniform voltage signal. The arc voltage was 15 volts + or - 2 volts with 300 mV ripple noise from the power supply. Changes in this steady noise voltage varied from 50 mV to less than one millivolt depending on the severity and the type of change experienced. In some instances the changes were easily detected by analysis of the signal in real time, while in other cases the signal had to transformed to the frequency domain in order to detect the changes. Discontinuities as small as 1.5 mm in length were detected. The ultimate sensitivity and reproducibility of the technique is still being investigated.

Limitations of signal averaging due to temporal correlation in laser remote-sensing measurements

Laser remote sensing involves the measurement of laser-beam transmission through the atmosphere and is subject to uncertainties caused by strong fluctuations due primarily to speckle, glint, and atmospheric-turbulence effects. These uncertainties are generally reduced by taking average values of increasing numbers of measurements. An experiment was carried out to directly measure the effect of signal averaging on back-scattered laser return signals from a diffusely reflecting target using a direct-detection differential-absorption lidar (DIAL) system. The improvement in accuracy obtained by averaging over increasing numbers of data points was found to be smaller than that predicted for independent measurements. The experimental results are shown to be in excellent agreement with a theoretical analysis which considers the effect of temporal correlation. The analysis indicates that small but long-term temporal correlation severely limits the improvement available through signal averaging.

The application of digital signal processing techniques to a teleoperator radar system

A digital signal processing system was studied for the determination of the spectral frequency distribution of echo signals from a teleoperator radar system. The system consisted of a sample and hold circuit, an analog to digital converter, a digital filter, and a Fast Fourier Transform. The system is interfaced to a 16 bit microprocessor. The microprocessor is programmed to control the complete digital signal processing. The digital filtering and Fast Fourier Transform functions are implemented by a S2815 digital filter/utility peripheral chip and a S2814A Fast Fourier Transform chip. The S2815 initially simulates a low-pass Butterworth filter with later expansion to complete filter circuit (bandpass and highpass) synthesizing.

Acoustic and electric signals from lightning

Observations of infrasound apparently generated by the collapse of the electrostatic field in the thundercloud, are presented along with electric field measurements and high-frequency thunder signals. The frequency of the infrasound pulse is about 1 Hz and amplitude a few microbars. The observations seem to confirm some of the theoretical predictions of Wilson (1920) and Dessler (1973). The signal is predominated by a compressional phase and seems to be beamed vertically. Calculation of the parameters of the charged region using the infrasound signal give reasonable values.

Phase-modulated received signal mixed with equal amplitude replica of optical carrier generated in phase locked loop. Two signals interfere with each other at photomultiplier cathode. Probability of error with this scheme close to theoretical minimum and implemented with current technology.

Advances in white-light optical signal processing

A technique that permits signal processing operations which can be carried out by white light source is described. The method performs signal processing that obeys the concept of coherent light rather than incoherent optics. Since the white light source contains all the color wavelengths of the visible light, the technique is very suitable for color signal processing.

A note on the use of coherent integration in periodogram analysis of MST radar signals

The effect of coherent integration on the periodogram method to estimate the power spectra of MST radar signals is examined. The spectrum estimate usually is biased, even when care is taken to reduce the aliasing effects. Due to this bias, the signal power for Doppler shifted signals is underestimated by as much as 4 dB. The use of coherent integration in reducing the effect of aliased power line harmonics is pointed out.
