Summary of changes to the ENDF library [Slides]

This presentation discusses the major revisions that the TSL sublibrary is undergoing. It also discusses mass(ive) sublibrary changes, charged particle evaluations, INDEN evaluations, and the non-INDEN neutron sublibrary. The presentation concludes by stating that there are conflicts that need to be resolved and that they have enough contributions that the executive committee feels that an ENDF/B-VIII.1 release is warranted by February 2023.

Covariance Testing at BNL [Slides]

This presentation discusses testing implemented in FUDGE & ADVANCE in regard to proper ENDF formatting: STAN, STANEF, CHECKR, FUDGE, NJOY, convert to BOXR format, plotting, endfcovreport.py which is an overview of ENDF library’s covariance contents, and covariance Matrix class implements that are the core of all GNDS covariance. Several checks are performed, including symmetric, real, positive definite, condition # of Eigenvalues, and too big uncertainties. The presentation states that it can fix too big and/or small uncertainties and that it can plot matrices. It states that further testing is recommended by CSEWG but has not yet been implemented and suggests methods such as documentation which needs a human to execute, completeness which is partially complete, and reasonableness which has not been started. The presentation concludes by elaborating on reasonableness and states that only cross section is documented, that similar limits on CP reactions cross sections are needed, that maximum limits are needed too which is tricky since ENDF assumes Normal PDFs, and that there may be other observables.

Status of the Atlas of Neutron Resonances [Slides]

The Atlas of Neutron Resonances is the most comprehensive compilation of neutron resonances, thermal cross sections, resonance integrals and Maxwellian averaged cross sections generally available. For decades, the Atlas was carefully curated and maintained by Dr. Said Mughabghab who sadly passed on during the summer of 2018 after publishing the 2018 edition of the Atlas . We are continuing the development of this important compendium. To a large extent, the Atlas book is generated from a series of text files given in a single purpose domain-specific format. Therefore, we developed a software API and began the systematic assessment of the Atlas files. With this work past, we are now focusing on new efforts to expand the quality and scope of the Atlas . Current and recently completed projects include a cross comparison of the Atlas bibliography with Nuclear Science References and the EXFOR data library, a better determination of average resonance parameters, and using machine learning to assess the correctness of the spin group assignments of resonances tabulated in the Atlas .

Machine Learning for Neutron Resonance Evaluations [Slides]

The performance of nuclear reactors and other nuclear systems depends on a precise understanding of the neutron interaction cross sections for materials used in these systems. These cross sections exhibit a resonance structure whose shape is determined in part by the angular momentum quantum numbers of the resonances. The correct assignment of the quantum numbers of neutron resonances is therefore of paramount importance. In this presentation, we describe the application of machine learning to automate the quantum number assignments. Scikit-learn classifiers were trained on simulated resonance data whose statistical properties were chosen to mimic real data. We explored the use of several physics (and random matrix theory)-motivated features for training the classifiers, including the nearest neighbor spacing distribution, cumulative level distribution, and channel width distributions. Initial results demonstrated that we can determine resonance spin groups somewhat reliably. We are now investigating the application of our approach to 52 Cr resonance data.

Updated ENDF-6 Format Approval Process [Slides]

The presentation begins by discussing the original ENDF/B-VIII.0 format proposal lifecycle and states that the GNDS Expert Group has developed a gitlab-friendly review process that addresses concerns raised by the format proposal lifecycle. As a result, a revised ENDF/B-VIII.0 format proposal lifecycle has been created. The presentation then discusses the necessary steps in the lifecycle that are as follows: create an issue in the issue tracker, make your changes directly to the manual, submit it for review and final approval. The presentation concludes by discussing two other things, including the transition CI/CD from buildbot system to built-in gitlab CI/CD and that the revised format review process document will follow, pending approval.

Recent Testing of ENDF/B-VIII.0 at ORNL [Slides]

This presentation provides an overview of comparisons of ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 and uses VALID suite to test >600 cases with ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 in KENO V.a/KENO-VI, although a limited number of cases have been tested with TSUNAMI. It provides a results summary of KENO V.a/KENO-VI with a pooled results summary. The presentation also discusses changes for LCT experiments, MCT experiments, MST experiments, and PST experiments. A few words about graphite are also provided and the presentation states that graphite performance investigated across ENDF/B-VII.0, ENDF/B-VII.1, and ENDF/B-VIII.0 for MSR and HTGR models. A brief summary of the results is presented to make sure the Validation Committee is aware of the work. Also presented is an Eigenvalue comparison with a graphite moderated system, and comparison between an HTR-10 pebble model ENDF/B-VII.1 vs. ENDF/B-VIII.0, which provides different graphite data. In conclusion, ORNL has recently completed a comparison of ENDF/B-VIII.0 and ENDF/B-VII.1 using the VALID library. Work is also being performed for advanced reactor applications. Other efforts on-going and they are also trying to investigate more intermediate spectrum cases.

Uncertainty Analysis for a Criticality Benchmark [Slides]

This presentation discusses how KRUSTY was analyzed with LANL’s MCNP neutron transport code, Monte Carlo N-Particle. In the Monte Carlo method, neutrons are born in fission events and fly around the geometry having events (e.g., scatter, capture, fission, escape) according to the natural probabilities. “Natural probabilities” are given as neutron cross sections , which are measured and evaluated nuclear data. One of the goals of the benchmark project is to improve the nuclear cross sections (and the codes that use them). In this work, the response of interest is called k eff , which describes the neutron multiplication in a near critical system. Like most quantities, k eff is not measured directly; it is only inferred. In summation, MCNP results for k eff matched the measurements extremely well. The evaluated uncertainties are asymmetric and smaller than 0.00100 (e.g., + 0.00080 / – 0.00062). The largest uncertainties are due to alignment.

Status of FUDGE [Slides]

This presentation discusses the nuclear data management code FUDGE (For Updating Data and Generating Evaluations). While FUDGE is designed to support GNDS, the presentation also states that ENDF-6 and ENDL data files are also supported but must first be translated into GNDS; translators are included with FUDGE. It also states that FUDGE supports plotting, manipulating, checking for physical content, resonance reconstruction, Doppler broadening, etc. FUDGE also supports processing for Monte Carlo and deterministic transport. FUDGE is open source, and the latest public release was FUDGE-4.2.3 with support for GNDS-1.9. In summation, FUDGE capabilities include translating older formats into GNDS, translating GNDS back to ENDF-6, and visualizing, modifying, checking, and processing GNDS data. It also states that a new version of FUDGE is coming soon. The plan is to support GNDS-2.0 specification, but it may be released sooner if v2.0 is delayed.

Crossing the Streams – Sampler and the TemplateEngine [Slides]

This presentation discusses Sampler, which is a versatile UQ and parametric study tool that can be applied to any SCALE Sequence. Sampler can perturb any quantity in any SCALE input. Recent work at ORNL has developed new types of covariance data that allow Sampler UQ to be applied to nearly all SCALE applications, including reactor depletion, UNF fuel characterization, source term analysis, and decay heat calculation. In SCALE 6.2 releases, CE data in transport cannot be perturbed. Sampler was originally designed for stochastic sampling with any sequence within SCALE and Parametric capability added in SCALE 6.2.2. Sampler can be used for uncertainty quantification, including sample data in static or depletion calculations and sample inputs for uncertainties in compositions and dimensions. The SCALE TemplateEngine allows for expanding templates to full inputs and the combination provides a powerful UQ tool.

Performing k eff Validation of As-Loaded Criticality Safety Calculations Using UNF-ST&DARDS: Applicable Experiment Selection [Slides]

This presentation discusses the UNF-ST&DARDS which performs many analyses for as-loaded SNF canisters, including criticality safety, shielding, thermal-hydraulic, and containment. It also discusses the experiment selection based on c k assessment of similarity and that the c k value of 0.8 or greater considered applicable for validation. 11 PWR SNF canisters (MPC-32) are used in this work. 1 model represents a failed fuel assembly as fresh, per the design basis and the remaining 10 models represent all 32 assemblies with depleted fuel. In conclusion, critical experiment selection can be performed with S/U techniques for as-loaded canisters in UNF-ST&DARDS. Sufficient benchmark experiments exist to support validation and additional MOX experiments that are a good match for commercial SNF would be a benefit to provide independent data. The presentations states that S/U techniques identify different pools of experiments for different systems and that the process is amenable to automation within UNF-ST&DARDS.

SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria Thermal Theory Manual (V.4.56)

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process flows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number ( Re < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newton’s method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic h -adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Aria’s more advanced capabilities.
