This review provides an overview of the different methods and computer codes that are used to interpret 2p x-ray absorption spectra of 3d transition metal ions. We first introduce the basic parameters and give an overview of the methods used. We start with the semi-empirical multiplet codes and compare the different codes that are available. A special chapter is devoted to the user friendly interfaces that have been written on the basis of these codes. Next we discuss the first principle codes based on band structure, including a chapter on Density Functional theory based approaches. We also give an overview of the first-principle multiplet codes that start from a cluster calculation and we discuss the wavefunction based methods, including multi-reference methods. We end the review with a discussion of the link between theory and experiment and discuss the open issues in the spectral analysis.
In recent years, increasingly stringent emission regulations have spurred an electrification trend in off-highway vehicle technology. To address challenges such as the high cost of power electronics components, limited battery capacity, and the substantial modifications required for the vehicles, there is a pressing need to develop high-speed, cost-effective, compact, and efficient electro-hydraulic units capable of powering vehicle functions. In response to these demands, this paper introduces an innovative morphology for an electro-hydraulic unit and outlines the integration method for a crescent-type internal gear machine with a permanent magnet synchronous electric machine. The proposed morphology aims to minimize component count through a shaftless solution while incorporating a cooling system that utilizes the same working fluid as the hydraulic machine. The design approach utilizes a genetic algorithm optimization process to maximize overall energy efficiency and compactness. Insights gained from the optimization results shed light on the relationship between key design parameters and unit performance, enhancing the understanding of this electro-hydraulic unit. A prototype of the unit was manufactured and tested, demonstrating a volumetric efficiency ranging from 81 % to 97 % at a maximum rotational velocity of the pinion of 6000 rpm. Finally, these results validate both the morphology and the design approach, indicating the feasibility of designing compact electro-hydraulic units that leverage hydraulic machines with higher maximum rotational velocities than commercially available counterparts as a mean to enhance efficiency and compactness.

Crack extensions in uncharged and hydrogen-charged side-grooved A(T) specimens of conventionally forged 21-6-9 austenitic stainless steels are simulated using the cohesive zone modeling approach. Two-dimensional plane strain finite element analyses with fixed cohesive parameters are first conducted to fit the experimental load-displacement curves. Similar analyses using varying cohesive parameters as functions of the crack extension are then conducted to fit the experimental load-crack extension and crack extension-displacement curves. The computational results with varying cohesive parameters can fit very well the experimental data. The computational results also indicate that the average cohesive energy for the hydrogen-charged A(T) specimen is lower than that for the uncharged A(T) specimen.

This research explores an innovative solvent-free method for fabricating ultra-high loading NMC811 and graphite electrodes (~6mAh∙cm -2 ), showcasing remarkable electrochemical performance enhancements compared to the electrodes prepared by the conventional slurry-casting method. Here, the optimized microstructure with dry-printed (DP) electrodes enhanced electrolyte penetration and minimized lithium-ion diffusion tortuosity resulting in improved rate performance at high current rates. Additionally, this innovative electrode manufacturing approach enables more uniform CEI and SEI formation and growth, which effectively doubles the cycle life of single-layer pouch cells with DP electrodes. Beyond the performance enhancements, this method also offers a notable 29.2 % overall cost advantages, potentially revolutionizing future battery manufacturing. The findings presented in this work underscore the potential of solvent-free manufacturing technology as a high-loading capable and cost-efficient path for advanced battery production.
In this article, understanding the relationship between travel behavior and building energy use at an urban scale is crucial for developing effective energy management strategies. Mobility patterns significantly impact building occupancy, which in turn affects energy consumption. However, existing methods often focus on individual buildings, whereas geographical influences on energy usage are not adequately examined. This study addresses this gap by using transportation origin-destination (OD) data to estimate building occupancy and energy. The proposed method assigns OD trips from census block groups to the building level, incorporating building, travel survey, and census data to derive building occupancy profiles. This method was applied to urban and rural areas with 4062 buildings in 70 census block groups. We found that the OD-informed occupancy profile exhibits smoother energy consumption patterns compared with that of Department of Energy reference occupancy profiles. Our analysis reveals distinct building energy consumption patterns among groups with long and short commutes, emphasizing the effect of commute times and work schedules on residential energy usage. This framework is useful for practitioners in transportation agencies and utility companies, enabling the estimation of building energy based on mobility patterns. Overall, this study shows the potential of integrating transportation and building energy data to inform cross-sector energy management strategies.
Manganese dioxide (MnO 2 )@carbon composites have been attractively considered as electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs) due to synergistic effects. This work systematically investigated the structure of MnO 2 @carbon nanofiber (CNF) composite electrodes with the different forms of CNFs and the corresponding electrochemical performance of SCs. In brief, novel activated carbon nanofibers were first fabricated by electrospinning the hydroxyl-containing poly(amic acid) solution, and then the preferred CNF material was decorated by MnO 2 crystals in the form of self-supporting membrane and ground powders, respectively. Additionally, the synthesis parameters were investigated and optimized based on the electrochemical performance of SCs. The results reveal that the powdered composite electrode exhibits a higher specific surface area of 501 m 2 g –1 compared to the self-supporting membrane composite electrode under the same conditions, resulting in a promising specific capacity of 214.1 mAh g –1 (770.8 Fg –1 ) in 6M KOH solution at 0.5 A g –1 . In addition, the capacitance of the symmetrical SC device assembled by G-HMC-1:3–80 reaches 179.8 Fg –1 , coupled with an energy density of 24.86 Whkg –1 at 230 Wkg –1 power density. This work provides valuable hints for designing SC composite electrode materials with outstanding performance.
