Testing of Prototype PV Modules (CRADA Final Report)

The American-Made Solar Prize is a prize competition from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that is designed to revitalize U.S. solar manufacturing. The competition aims to support the growth of U.S. solar manufacturing and reenergize American energy innovation by tapping into Americans’ competitive spirit and the nation's unparalleled innovation ecosystem, leveraging national labs, incubators, facilities, and more. Finalists have been chosen based on the work they intend to do with a manufacturing partner to advance their innovation to market. NLR will provide technical advisement to assist participants in demonstrating the full potential of their product.

Novel PV Array System Design to Accelerate Solar Deployment, Reduce LCOE, Reduce Land Use Competition, and Increase Siting Flexibility

The increasing demand for solar energy faces significant barriers, including inefficient construction processes, high project costs limiting LCOE reductions, and diminishing availability of "good" sites with favorable interconnection. Conventional solar installations are often constrained by long construction timelines and the need for flat, large plots. Furthermore, the industry struggles with a shortage of skilled labor. Planted Solar aims to address these challenges by fundamentally transforming solar deployment from a construction project into a streamlined manufacturing process. Our novel approach combines high-density racking, integrated terrain-following design software, and installation automation. Unlike competing solutions that either assist with standard array assembly or offer dense packing without terrain adaptability or automation, Planted's technology uniquely brings together a new array product with in-place automated manufacturing to achieve the lowest possible cost, greater site flexibility, and accelerated deployment.

Field studies of PERC and Al-BSF PV module performance loss using power and I-V timeseries

We have studied the degradation of both full-sized modules and minimodules with PERC and Al-BSF cell variations in fields while considering packaging strategies. We demonstrate the implementations of data-driven tools to analyze large numbers of modules and volumes of timeseries data to obtain the performance loss and degradation pathways. This data analysis pipeline enables quantitative comparison and ranking of module variations, as well as mapping and deeper understanding of degradation mechanisms. The best performing module is a half-cell PERC, which shows a performance loss rate ( PLR ) of −0.27 ± 0.12% per annum (%/ a ) after initial losses have stabilized. Minimodule studies showed inconsistent performance rankings due to significant power loss contributions via series resistance, however, recombination losses remained stable. Overall, PERC cell variations outperform or are not distinguishable from Al-BSF cell variations.

Genome-wide identification of novel flagellar motility genes in Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000

Pseudomonas syringaepv.tomatoDC3000 (PstDC3000) is a plant pathogenic bacterium that possesses complicated motility regulation pathways including a typical chemotaxis system. A significant portion of our understanding about the genes functioning inPstDC3000 motility is based on comparison to other bacteria. This leaves uncertainty about whether gene functions are conserved, especially since specific regulatory modules can have opposite functions in sets ofPseudomonas. In this study, we used a competitive selection to enrich for mutants with altered swimming motility and used random barcode transposon-site sequencing (RB-TnSeq) to identify genes with significant roles in swimming motility. Besides many of the known or predicted chemotaxis and motility genes, our method identified PSPTO_0406 (dipA), PSPTO_1042 (chrR) and PSPTO_4229 (hypothetical protein) as novel motility regulators. PSPTO_0406 is a homolog ofdipA, a known cyclic di-GMP degrading enzyme inP. aeruginosa. PSPTO_1042 is part of an extracytoplasmic sensing system that controls gene expression in response to reactive oxygen species, suggesting that PSPTO_1042 may function as part of a mechanism that enablesPstDC3000 to alter motility when encountering oxidative stressors. PSPTO_4229 encodes a protein containing an HD-related output domain (HDOD), but with no previously identified functions. We found that deletion and overexpression of PSPTO_4229 both reduce swimming motility, suggesting that its function is sensitive to expression level. We used the overexpression phenotype to screen for nonsense and missense mutants of PSPTO_4229 that no longer reduce swimming motility and found a pair of conserved arginine residues that are necessary for motility suppression. Together these results provide a global perspective on regulatory and structural genes controlling flagellar motility inPstDC3000.

Comparative and Cost Analysis of a Novel Predictive Power Ramp Rate Control Method: A Case Study in a PV Power Plant in Puerto Rico

One of the most important aspects that need to be addressed to increase solar energy penetration is the power ramp-rate control. In weak grids such as the one found in Puerto Rico, it is important to smooth power fluctuations caused by the intermittence of passing clouds. In this work, a novel power ramp-rate control strategy is proposed. Additionally, a comparison with some of the most common power ramp-rate control methods is performed using a proposed model and real solar radiation data from the Coto Laurel photovoltaic power plant located in Ponce, Puerto Rico. The proposed model was validated using one-year real data from Coto Laurel. The power ramp-rate control methods were compared in real-time simulations using the OP5700 from Opal-RT Technologies considering power ramp rate fluctuations, power ramp-rate violations, fluctuations in the state-of-charge, among other indicators. Moreover, the proposed power ramp-rate control strategy, called predictive dynamic smoothing was explained and compared. Results indicate that the predictive dynamic smoothing produced a considerably reduced Levelized Cost of Storage compared to other power ramp-rate control methods and provided a higher lifetime expectancy for lithium batteries.
