Reduced hydrogen permeability at high temperatures

CO and CO2 reduce hydrogen loss through iron, nickel, and cobalt based alloy tubes. Method is based on concept that oxide film on metal surface reduces hydrogen permeability through metal; adding CO or CO2 forms oxide films continuously during operation, and hydrogen containment is improved. Innovation enhances prospects for Stirling engine system utilization.

Methods for calculation of engineering parameters for gas separation

A group additivity method is generated which allows estimation, from the structural formulas alone, of the energy of vaporization and the molar volume at 25 C of many nonpolar organic liquids. Using these two parameters and appropriate thermodynamic relations, the vapor pressure of the liquid phase and the solubility of various gases in nonpolar organic liquids are predicted. It is also possible to use the data to evaluate organic and some inorganic liquids for use in gas separation stages or liquids as heat exchange fluids in prospective thermochemical cycles for hydrogen production.

Acid rain: Mesoscale model

A mesoscale numerical model of the Florida peninsula was formulated and applied to a dry, neutral atmosphere. The prospective use of the STAR-100 computer for the submesoscale model is discussed. The numerical model presented is tested under synoptically undisturbed conditions. Two cases, differing only in the direction of the prevailing geostrophic wind, are examined: a prevailing southwest wind and a prevailing southeast wind, both 6 m/sec at all levels initially.

SPS market analysis

A market analysis task included personal interviews by GE personnel and supplemental mail surveys to acquire statistical data and to identify and measure attitudes, reactions and intentions of prospective small solar thermal power systems (SPS) users. Over 500 firms were contacted, including three ownership classes of electric utilities, industrial firms in the top SIC codes for energy consumption, and design engineering firms. A market demand model was developed which utilizes the data base developed by personal interviews and surveys, and projected energy price and consumption data to perform sensitivity analyses and estimate potential markets for SPS.

Submillimeter local oscillators for heterodyne spectroscopy

The major technological innovations in continuous wave (CW) submillimeter sources which are specifically suitable for application as local oscillators in heterodyne systems are reviewed. A description of the various sources is given which underscores the general principles and operating features for each type of device. Particular emphasis is placed on CW optically pumped lasers, which have had a dramatic impact as widely available sources of narrow linewidth coherent radiation. The state-of-the-art is summarized for these lasers and performance data are presented for several local oscillator packages. Optically pumped lasers are then compared and contrasted with other competing sources such as backward wave oscillators, IMPATT diodes, and Josephson junctions. By comparing their advantages and limitations for use as local oscillators, the potential applications of these different sources are projected. The prospects for increased tunability, reliability, and scalability are briefly considered, and several novel techniques for generating partially tunable radiation using Schottky diode mixers or CW Raman lasers are highlighted.

Propellant injection for MPD thrusters

The propellant gas for a pulsed self-field MPD thruster must be supplied by a valve which will necessarily be separated from the thruster injectors by some ullage volume. A model and experimental data are presented showing the effect of the ullage volume on the propellant pulse shape, along with a discussion of the proper location for the propellant flow choke point(s). Prospective MPD pulse valves are surveyed and the performance of two solenoid valves, one with a pulse length less than 2 milliseconds, is included. Pulse shape data is presented for a thruster specially modified to reduce the ullage volume.

Submilliarcsecond astrometry via VLBI. I - Relative position of the radio sources 3C 345 and NRAO 512

The relative position and relative proper motion of the radio sources 3C 345 and NRAO 512 are estimated from four sets of VLBI observations spread out over the period from October 1971 to May 1974. The use of phase-connection techniques yields the separation, in 1950.0 coordinates, of the centers of brightness of the compact components of the two sources. An upper bound of 0.0005 arcsec/yr is placed on the relative proper motion (70% estimated confidence limits). Bounds that can be placed on the distances to the two sources are considered, prospects for improvement in the determination of relative position and proper motion of these sources are discussed, and other possible applications of the basic technique are described.

Galactic distribution models of gamma-ray burst sources

The log N-log S relationships for several galactic distribution models of gamma-ray burst sources are derived. The resulting curves are substantially different from the galactic curves usually assumed (slope = -1). There is a relatively weak dependence on the radial distribution assumed but a strong dependence on scale height. Available observational data from several experiments appear to rule out both thin disk distributions and extended halo distributions which have a strong radial density dependence. The prospects are good for obtaining self-consistent distribution data from future large-area detectors.

Overview - Electric fields

The electric fields session is designed to review progress in observation, theory, and modeling of magnetospheric electric fields, and to expose important new results. The present report comments on the state and prospects of electric field research, with particular emphasis on relevance to quantitative modeling of the magnetospheric processes. Attention is given to underlying theories and models. Modeling philosophy is discussed relative to explanatory models and representative models. Modeling of magnetospheric electric fields, while in its infancy, is developing rapidly on many fronts employing a variety of approaches. The general topic of magnetospheric electric fields is becoming of prime importance in understanding space plasmas.

Direct determination of asteroid diameters from occultation observations

Of the available earth-based techniques for determining asteroid diameters, observation of stellar occultations involving asteroids is clearly the most direct. The high degree of accuracy achievable by this method has already been demonstrated in the case of Pallas, whose mean diameter has been measured with a standard error of plus or minus 2%. In this paper the problems, results and prospects of the stellar occultation technique are reviewed. It is shown that, with the use of a network of small, portable telescopes, the method is currently applicable to a large number of asteroids. The best results can be expected for asteroids of large angular diameter and regular shape. The potential of lunar occultation observations for asteroid diameter measurements is also briefly discussed.

Mars surface composition from reflectance spectroscopy - A summary

Visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra and multispectral maps of the Martian surface are discussed, and implications of the data for the composition of the Martian surface are considered. Spacecraft and earth-based telescopic observations have confirmed the generally bimodal albedo distribution of the planet, dividing the surface into bright and dark regions. Mars spectra are characterized by the presence of strong Fe(+3) absorption, which is attributed to various ferric oxide minerals. Interpretations of the spectra from the dark regions indicate a basaltic or ultramafic source rock. Evidence for water ice or a highly desiccated metal hydrate has been obtained, along with evidence for CO2-ice only in the south polar cap. Mariner 9 observations of Martian dust suggest the presence of rather acidic rock or mineral particles, or a montmorillonite-type clay. Prospects for the future study of Martian surface composition include continuing earth-based spectrophotometric studies, and high-spectral-resolution mapping of a significant portion of the surface by the Galileo spacecraft and the next Mars mission.
