Densification Pressure Optimization of MOF-808-Based Membranes for Lithium Metal Batteries

The use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in hybrid electrolytes for lithium (Li) metal batteries has grown in prominence in recent years, primarily due to the chemical tunability of the MOF’s pore structures, which can directly influence Li–ion transport properties. The most attractive form factor for a MOF electrolyte is a thin, flexible membrane, which requires the application of pressure to increase the contact between the MOF particles. Herein, a systematic study of the influence of pressure on the properties of MOF-808-based membranes is presented. It is shown that when a dry, roll-pressed membrane is subjected to pressure ≥120 MPa, a total loss of crystallinity and a significant loss of porosity is observed. Alternatively, a slurry-cast membrane, compressed under controlled pressures, can maintain crystallinity and porosity while decreasing the interparticle void space. Interesting, the conductivity of the membranes infiltrated with liquid electrolyte is not greatly affected by the pressure applied, though ultimately it is shown that for cycling with Li metal, compressed membranes with compact particles are preferred. In conclusion, this study highlights the critical importance of controlling the pressure applied to MOF-based membranes during fabrication and during cell assembly and lays out the foundation for further investigation of how to optimize membrane fabrication for hybrid electrolytes that use MOFs as the dominate component.

Active tungsten expulsion in ELM-absent H-mode plasmas via on-demand ELM triggering with lithium granule injection

Lithium granules gravitationally injected into the upper X-point region demonstrated on-demand edge-localized modes (ELM) triggering in otherwise ELM-suppressed H-mode plasmas on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. Sub-mm lithium granules dropped into enhanced D-alpha H-mode plasmas achieved a high triggering efficiency, while enabling ELM frequencies from several to hundreds of hertz. Core radiation from heavy impurities, dominated by W, was reduced by up to 60%, and the normalized energy confinement increased by up to 30%. At low injection frequencies, ELMs of substantially reduced size compared to spontaneous type-I ELMs were observed. At high injection frequencies, a transition to a mixed ELM phase occurred, characterized by intermittent larger ELMs and suppression of the quasi-coherent mode, achieving the most significant W reduction and energy confinement improvement. These results highlight a promising pathway for active W control via controlled, small ELMs in long-pulse, high-performance scenarios.

2022 Bioenergy Industry Status Report

This report provides a snapshot of the bioenergy industry status at the end of 2022. The report compliments other annual market reports from the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) offices and is supported by DOE's Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO). The 2022 Bioenergy Industry Status Report focuses on past year data covering multiple dimensions of the bioenergy industry and does not attempt to make future market projections. The report provides a balanced and unbiased assessment of the industry and associated markets. It is openly available to the public and is intended to compliment International Energy Agency and industry reports with a focus on DOE stakeholder needs.
