Electrochemical, thermodynamic, and physical properties of tetradecyltrihexylphosphonium ([P 6,6, 6,14 ] + ) and methyl-propyl piperidinium containing ionic liquids and their propylene carbonate solutions

Here, the viscosity, conductivity, electrochemical window and related thermodynamic properties such as excess volume and dynamic viscosity deviation of two phosphonium ionic liquids were measured and calculated for “as-supplied” and dried neat liquids and also v/v mixtures of 99/1, 95/5, 90/10, 75/25, and 50/50 of the ionic liquids with propylene carbonate (PC). Tetradecyltrihexylphosphonium dicyanamide ([P 6,6,6,14 ] + dicyanamide), Cyphos 105, and tetradecyltrihexylphosphonium bis(trifluororomethanesulfonyl)imide (called bistriflimide) ([P 6,6,6,14 ] + bistriflimide), Cyphos 109, ionic liquids were studied. Generally speaking, there were slight differences in the measured properties of the wet and dried IL solutions which were reflected in differences if the calculated properties. The measured and calculated properties were compared with those collected and derived from a piperidinium-based ionic liquid, methyl-propyl piperidinium bistriflimide. Arrhenius plots for both the viscosity and conductivity were linear, with the linearity of the Litovitz plots being slightly higher. The viscosity and conductivity of the phosphonium solutions yielded Walden Plots that differed from Walden plots of piperidinium solutions and other ionic liquid solutions. For the phosphonium based ionic liquids, the ionicity was found to increase with increasing dilution in propylene carbonate. The electrochemical windows of the ionic liquids were determined as a function of the concentration of the ionic liquid present in the solution. The size of the window generally initially decreased and then increased with the addition of PC for the [P 6,6,6,14 ] + dicyanamide ionic liquid increasing from 3.4 V in the 95/5 v/v (volume Cyphos 105) to volume of PC solvent) to 3.7 in the 50/50 dried IL case. The electrochemical windows of the dried liquids were slightly larger 3.5 V for the 95/5 v/v and 4.2 V for the 50/50 v/v Cyphos 105/PC solutions. The electrochemical window was larger and the conductivity was higher for the piperidinium IL solutions, but since the ionicity increases with dilution, the phosphonium based IL solutions may prove favorable for processes such as electrochemical reduction.

Quantification of the 35 Cl($\textit{n, p}$) reaction channel

The evaluated 35 Cl($\textit{n, p}$) cross sections in the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library remain uncertain because of the lack of measured data in the neutron energy range between 100-600 keV. In this energy region, the R-matrix analysis relies heavily on estimated ($\textit{n, p}$) partial widths and level density information. This resulted in significant differences of the evaluated cross sections and predicted reactivity in nuclear reactor applications with respect to previous nuclear data libraries. Here, we present a methodology to quantify the cross sections for the 35 Cl($\textit{n, p}$) reaction channel from the combination of measured total cross sections and model calculations.

Chemistry and P-V-T equation of state of FeO 2 H x at the base of Earth’s lower mantle and their geophysical implications

The hydrogen-absorbing ability of a mantle mineral in its structure determines the capacity of the water reservoirs hosted by the mineral. Water reservoirs at the base of Earth’s mantle directly influence the fate of water brought down by slab subduction and the seismic heterogeneity such as ultralow-velocity zones (ULVZs) at the core-mantle boundary. Pyrite-FeO 2 H x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) presents a possibility of such reservoirs in the deep mantle. Ever since the discovery of this mineral phase, however, its chemistry at the lower mantle conditions has been debated. We conducted kinetics experiments of pyrite-FeO 2 H x dehydrogenation at 110 GPa/2100 K, 110 GPa/2300 K, and 120 GPa/2300 K and P-V-T equation of state analysis using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We found that x approaches 0.80, 0.75, and 0.79, respectively, at the above conditions. The collective P-V-T data yield K 0 = 241(13) GPa, K' = 4.2(4), dK/dT = –0.028(1) GPa/K, α 0 = 4.32(13) × 10 –5 K –1 , and α 1 = 0.31(10) × 10 –8 K –2 for the composition of x = 0.75 ± 0.04. Our first-principles calculations indicate that FeO 2 H 0.75 with a slightly distorted pyrite structure is stable at 100 GPa. These results indicate that this mineral is likely present in the deep mantle with rather a partially dehydrogenated composition than FeO 2 or FeOOH. Furthermore, the results also clarify the difference between the ULVZs originated from pyrite-FeO 2 H x and those from partial melting in terms of shear and compressional wave seismic velocity reduction ratio δlnV S /δlnV P .

Semi-transparent p-type barium copper sulfide as a back contact interface layer for cadmium telluride solar cells

Optically transparent p-type materials play a critical role in transparent electronics including photovoltaic (PV) devices. P-type sulfide materials offer an alternative to oxides for PV application due to improved hole transport properties. Here, we report the solution-based synthesis of earth-abundant p-type transparent conducting barium copper sulfide (α-BaCu 4 S 3 , BCS) thin films. These films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometry, Raman spectroscopy, and spectroscopic ellipsometry. BCS films of ~100 nm thickness transmit >70% of visible light. We report on tests of the hole transport properties of these BCS films for cadmium telluride (CdTe) photovoltaics, finding that the BCS deposition process forms a beneficial tellurium (Te) rich surface on CdTe by selectively removing Cd from the surface. Based on our study, the BCS interface layer plays dual functions for CdTe PV devices as a hole transport material and as an etchant, enhancing the resulting device performance. We observed a significant increase in open-circuit voltage of CdTe solar cells with the BCS buffer layer. Furthermore, we discuss semitransparent CdTe solar cells with BCS as a hole transport layer and indium tin oxide as a finishing electrode. Semitransparent CdTe solar cells shows 13.3% conversion efficiency for the front side illumination and 1.2% efficiency for back side illumination, indicating high recombination of charge carriers generated close to the rear CdTe/BCS/ITO contact.

Detailed investigation of electrical and optical properties of textured n-type and roughened p-type tunnel oxide passivated contacts for screen-printed double-side passivated contact silicon solar cell application

Here, this paper presents detailed characterization and analyses of the optical, electrical, and contact properties of a 35 nm phosphorus-doped (n-type) polysilicon (poly-Si) and a 250 nm boron-doped (p-type) poly-Si deposited respectively on textured and roughed surface. These layers could be applied respectively to the front and rear sides of an n-type Si to produce back junction bifacial screen-printed double-side tunnel oxide passivated contacts (DS-TOPCon) solar cells. Optical and device modeling revealed a short circuit current density loss of 1.5 mA/cm 2 and 0.5 mA/cm 2 due to absorption in the front n-TOPCon and rear side p-TOPCon layers, respectively. The passivation and contact properties including metalized and unmetallized recombination current density (J 0 ), as well as contact resistivity, were determined as a function of contact firing temperature in the range of 700~800°C. The passivation quality of the front thin n-TOPCon was found to deteriorate with increased firing temperature while the rear thick p-TOPCon improved. The study showed that the simulated contact firing at 730°C resulted in the best unmetallized double-side TOPCon precursor, with an excellent implied open-circuit voltage of 730 mV and implied fill factor of ~86 %. However, the metalized J0 increased and contact resistivity decreased monotonically with the increase in the firing temperature. The 2D device simulations revealed that these layers can produce screen-printed DS-TOPCon cells with an efficiency of ~22.5 %. Solar cell modeling also showed that the DS-TOPCon solar cell efficiency can reach 24.1 % by decreasing the n-TOPCon thickness to 20 nm and lowering the full area metalized J 0 to ~100 mA/cm 2 .

The P( 4 S) + NH( 3 Σ – ) and N( 4 S) + PH( 3 Σ – )reactions as sources of interstellar phosphorus nitride

Phosphorus nitride (PN) is believed to be one of the major reservoirs of phosphorus in the interstellar medium (ISM). For this reason, understanding which reactions produce PN in space and predicting their rate coefficients is important for modelling the relative abundances of P-bearing species and clarifying the role of phosphorus in astrochemistry. Here, in this work, we explore the potential energy surfaces of the $\textrm{P}(^4\textrm{S}) + \textrm{NH}(^3\Sigma^-)$ and $\textrm{N}(^4\textrm{S}) + \textrm{PH}(^3\Sigma^-)$ reactions and the formation of $\textrm{H}(^2\textrm{S}) + \textrm{PN}(^1\Sigma^+)$ through high accuracy ab initio calculations and the variable reaction coordinate transition state theory (VRC-TST). We found that both reactions proceed without an activation barrier and with similar rate coefficients that can be described by a modified Arrhenius equation ( $k(T)=\alpha\!\left( T/300 \right)^{\beta} \exp\!{(\!-\!\gamma/T)})$ with $\alpha=0.93\times 10^{-10}\rm cm^3\,s^{-1}$ , $\beta=-0.18$ and $\gamma=0.24\, \rm K$ for the $\textrm{P} + \textrm{NH} \longrightarrow \textrm{H} + \textrm{PN}$ reaction and $\alpha=0.88\times 10^{-10}\rm cm^3\,s^{-1}$ , $\beta=-0.18$ and $\gamma=1.01\, \rm K$ for the $\textrm{N} + \textrm{PH} \longrightarrow \textrm{H} + \textrm{PN}$ one. Both reactions are expected to be relevant for modelling PN abundances even in the cold environments of the ISM. Given the abundance of hydrogen in space, we have also predicted rate coefficients for the destruction of PN via H + PN collisions.

Sulfur ( 3 P) Reaction with Conjugated Dienes Gives Cyclization to Thiophenes under Single Collision Conditions

Here, we combine crossed-beam velocity map imaging with high-level ab initio/transition state theory modeling of the reaction of S( 3 P) with 1,3-butadiene and isoprene under single collision conditions. For the butadiene reaction, we detect both H and H 2 loss from the initial adduct, and from reaction with isoprene, we see both H loss and methyl loss. Theoretical calculations confirm these arise following intersystem crossing to the singlet surface forming long-lived intermediates. For the butadiene reaction, these lose H 2 to form thiophene as the dominant channel, H to form the detected 2H-thiophenyl radical, or ethene, giving thioketene. For isoprene, additional reaction products are suggested by theory, including the observed H and methyl loss radicals, but also methyl thiophene, thioformaldehyde, and thioketene. The results for S( 3 P) + 1,3-butadiene, showing direct cyclization to the aromatic product and yielding few bimolecular product channels, are in striking contrast to those for the analogous O( 3 P) reaction.

Accurate and Efficient Prediction of p K w in Aqueous Electrolytes Using Local Electrostatic Potentials

The K w =10 -pK w in aqueous electrolytes exhibit significant variations as a function of ion concentration. This behavior is not well-described by the Pitzer model, particularly at high concentrations. Here, we provide a molecular interpretation of the concentration dependent trends in p K w and develop a new method that accurately predicts the dissociation constant based upon the local electrostatic potential of the water oxygen that is determined by its nearest neighbors. The method is computationally efficient, relying only upon sampling of the local configurations (via molecular dynamics) and a small set of experimentally measured p K w . It is extensible to a range of salt compositions and the molecular understanding of the local potentials provides new routes toward the development of electrolytes with tailored physicochemical properties like p K w .

Direct Deposition of Nonaqueous SnO 2 Dispersion by Blade Coating on Perovskites for the Scalable Fabrication of p–i–n Perovskite Solar Cells

Tin(IV) oxide materials have been extensively used as electron transport materials in n–i–p perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to their superior optoelectronic properties, low-temperature processability, and high chemical stability. However, solvent incompatibility and processing temperature have limited the direct deposition of fully solution-processed SnO 2 in p–i–n devices. In this study, we overcome this limitation by the functionalization of SnO 2 nanoparticles with acetate through ligand exchange, allowing their dispersion in anhydrous ethanol. The SnO 2 dispersion was deposited on the perovskite absorber by blade coating without damaging the underlying perovskite layer, as determined by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Photoluminescence spectroscopy confirmed effective electron extraction. The champion device shows 14.1% initial power conversion efficiency (PCE) which is unprecedented for a p–i–n device employing solution-phase SnO 2 . Finally, PSCs stored for 40 days in a nitrogen flow box retained an average of 95.8% of the initial PCE.

TiO 2 /TiN Interface Enables Integration of Ni 5 P 4 Electrocatalyst with a III–V Tandem Photoabsorber for Stable Unassisted Solar-Driven Water Splitting

H 2 production by direct photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has remained unachievable commercially, mainly due to rapid failure at the interface between the photoabsorber(s) and catalyst(s). PEC devices made from multijunction III-V semiconductors with platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts have yielded impressive initial solar-to-H 2 (STH) efficiency >19%, which rapidly corrodes in aqueous electrolytes. Here, TiO 2 /TiN layers were fused to create a bifunctional interface between a GaInP 2 /GaAs III-V tandem photoabsorber and a polycrystalline Ni 5 P 4 HER catalyst. Here, the TiO 2 serves as a conducting corrosion barrier, while a thin layer of much denser TiN (1 nm) blocks interlayer diffusion during fabrication. This strategy allows the elevated temperatures needed to crystallize the Ni 5 P 4 nanoparticles and fuse to the TiO 2 /TiN junction to achieve minimal optical loss without damaging the sensitive photoasbsorber. The resulting photocathode exhibits an initial STH efficiency of 11.4%-13.2% in sodium phosphate electrolyte at neutral pH 7. It operated continuously for over 200 h without failure above 10% STH efficiency, exceeding all previous benchmarks. The earth-abundant Ni 5 P 4 catalyst replaces costly PGM catalysts at comparable HER activity in neutral, acidic, or basic pH electrolytes.

In Situ EXAFS Study of Mo–P Bond Dynamics in Molybdenum Phosphide during CO 2 Reduction and Hydrogen Evolution

Transition Metal Phosphides (TMPs) are widely studied as catalysts in reactions like hydrogen evolution, oxygen reduction, and hydrodesulfurization. TMPs have demonstrated remarkable efficiency in accelerating reactions by providing active sites for adsorption and facilitating the transformation of reaction intermediates, a feature that has increased the interest of TMPs in the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR). Despite their growing use, the potential-dependent structural behavior of TMPs under operating electrochemical conditions remains insufficiently understood. This work investigates the dynamics of the Mo−P bond during eCO 2 RR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using in situ extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) studies at the Mo−K edge. Structural characterization of the synthesized MoP nanoparticles was performed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results of the overall electrochemical activity of MoP are presented through linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) experiments in the potential range of 0 to −1.5 V versus Ag/AgCl and chronoamperometry (CA). Liquid products were analyzed by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The synthesized catalyst showed increasing activity with the highest Faradaic efficiency of 11.75% for C 2+ products at −1.3 V vs Ag/AgCl. In situ EXAFS revealed a change in the average Mo−P bond distance during eCO 2 RR, whereas no such change was observed during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This finding suggests that phosphorus, particularly through modulation of the Mo−P bond length, plays an important role in the eCO 2 RR and demonstrates how in situ EXAFS can track local structural perturbations in MoP catalysts during electrochemical operation, providing complementary structural insight that correlates with electrochemical behavior.

Investigation of a Lignin-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent Using p -Hydroxybenzoic Acid for Efficient Woody Biomass Conversion

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are effective solvents for biomass conversion and have been proposed as alternatives to ionic liquids (ILs). In this paper, we first report an effective pretreatment of woody biomass using a novel hardwood lignin-based DES prepared from p -hydroxybenzoic acid (PB) and choline chloride (ChCl), which are used as the hydrogen bond donor and acceptor, respectively. The impacts of the ChCl-PB DES on structural properties and enzymatic hydrolysis of poplar wood were comprehensively evaluated. The performance of ChCl-PB DES was also compared with two other DESs with p -coumaric acid (PCA) and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (PHA) as the hydrogen bond donors, which have been successfully applied to herbaceous biomass conversion in previous studies. The results showed that hemicellulose and lignin were effectively fractionated during the proposed ChCl-PB DES pretreatment under a relatively mild temperature. The ChCl-PB DES pretreatment resulted in up to 69% of delignification, and the pretreated poplar residues had over 90% of glucose yield by a 72 h-enzymatic hydrolysis. Transformation of poplar biomass during the DES pretreatment was evaluated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), two-dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence (2D-HSQC), and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. The recovered lignin showed relatively high purity, narrow molecular weight distribution (PDI < 1.6), and relatively low molecular weight (~1400 g/mol for M w ). A sustainable process was achieved by recycling DES as well as the utilization of PB, which is a producible aromatic compound from hardwood lignin, for the proposed DES formation in the system. This study indicates that the proposed novel DES with a hardwood lignin-based PB compound is a promising pretreatment solvent to achieve an economically feasible biomass conversion process.

Strong Negative Thermal Expansion in a Low-Cost and Facile Oxide of Cu 2 P 2 O 7

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) behaviors have been observed in various types of compounds. The achievement in the merits of promising low-cost and facile NTE oxides remains challenging. In the present work, a simple and low-cost Cu 2 P 2 O 7 has been found to exhibit the strongest NTE among the oxides (alpha(v) similar to -27.69 X 10 -6 K -1 , 5-375 K). The complex NTE mechanism has been investigated by the combined methods of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, X-ray pair distribution function, extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Interesting, the direct experimental evidence reveals that the coupling twist and rotation of PO 4 and CuO 5 polyhedra are the inherent factors for the NTE nature of Cu 2 P 2 O 7 , which is triggered by the transverse vibrations of oxygen atoms. The present new NTE material of Cu 2 P 2 O 7 also has been verified for the practical application.

Harnessing the Power of Machine Learning and Omics to Identify Environmental Regulation on Microbial Functional Composition for Soil C, N, and P Cycling

Microbial enzyme-mediated soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition regulates many key ecosystem functions, such as elemental cycling, soil carbon sequestration, and soil fertility. However, representing microbial processes in Earth system models (ESMs) remains challenging due to a limited understanding of the spatial patterns of diverse microbial functions responsible for soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) cycling as well as the underlying mechanisms regulating their relative abundances across various environments. We collected published metagenomics data across the continental US (CONUS) to identify hundreds of microbial genes involved in soil C, N, and P cycling and grouped them into eight enzyme functional classes (EFCs). Each EFC represented a group of gene-encoded potential enzymes that decompose similar soil compounds. By integrating the abundances of omics-informed EFCs with the corresponding environmental information, we trained a machine learning (ML) model to identify key edaphic, climate, and vegetation factors regulating the abundances of each EFC. Quantitative analysis of effects of these factors revealed that the spatial distribution of eight EFCs for soil C, N, and P cycling across CONUS reflected potential resource optimization strategies of microbial communities under nutrient limitation, preferential organic-mineral associations, and climatological stresses. This insight, together with the interpreted ML tool and the CONUS-level benchmark for EFCs abundances, paves the way for parameterizing environmental-regulated microbial functional dynamics in biogeochemical models.

Drastic enhancement of magnetic critical temperature and amorphization in topological magnet EuSn 2 P 2 under pressure

High pressure is an effective tool to induce exotic quantum phenomena in magnetic topological insulators by controlling the interplay of magnetic order and topological state. This work presents a comprehensive high-pressure study of the crystal structure and magnetic ground state up to 62 GPa in an intrinsic topological magnet EuSn 2 P 2 . With a combination of high resolution X-ray diffraction, 151 Eu synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, molecular orbital calculations, and electronic band structure calculations, it has been revealed that pressure drives EuSn 2 P 2 from a rhombohedral crystal to an amorphous phase at 36 GPa accompanied by a fourfold enhancement of magnetic ordering temperature. In the pressure-induced amorphous phase, Eu ions take an intermediate valence state. The drastic enhancement of magnetic ordering temperature from 30 K at ambient pressure to 130 K at 41.2 GPa resulting from Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) interactions likely attributes to the stronger Eu–Sn interaction at high pressure. These rich results demonstrate that EuSn 2 P 2 is an ideal platform to study the correlation of the enhanced RKKY interactions, disordered lattice, intermediate valence, and topological state.

Study of graphene p-n junctions formed by the electrostatic modification of the SiO2 substrate

Abstract We study the transport properties of mm-scale CVD graphene p-n junctions, which are formed in a single gated graphene field effect transistor configuration. Here, an electrical-stressing-voltage technique served to modify the electrostatic potential in the SiO 2 /Si substrate and create the p-n junction. We examine the transport characteristics about the Dirac points that are localized in the perturbed and unperturbed regions in the graphene channel and note the quantitative differences in the Hall effect between the perturbed and unperturbed regions. The results also show that the longitudinal resistance is highly sensitive to the external magnetic field when the Hall bar device operates as a p-n junction.

Pressure and temperature dependences of the canting angle and increase in the magnetic ordering temperature, T c ( P ), for the weak ferromagnet Li + [TCNE]˙ – (TCNE = tetracyanoethylene)

The hydrostatic pressure dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature, T c (P), for the interpenetrating, diamondoid lattice-structured, weak ferromagnet (= canted antiferromagnet) Li + [TCNE]˙ – (TCNE = tetracyanoethylene) reversibly increases from 20.9 to 23.4 K at 9.73 kbar, an increase of 12% with a rate of increase, dT c /dP, of 0.27 K kbar –1 . The 5 T magnetization increased by 672% from 186 emu Oe mol –1 at ambient pressure to an average of 1440 emuOe mol –1 upon application of pressure. The remanent magnetization initially increases 30% from 10.8 to 14.0 emuOe mol –1 from ambient to 0.06 kbar, and increases further by 6% to a maximum of 14.8 emuOe mol –1 at 0.56 kbar before declining by 22% to 11.5 emuOe mol –1 at 9.73 kbar. The pressure-dependent coercive field, H cr (P), initially decreases by 42% from 31.1 Oe at ambient pressure to 18 Oe at 0.06 kbar, then increases to 52 Oe at 9.73 kbar. The canting angle, α, increases by 28% from 0.52° to 0.66° at 0.06 kbar, then decreases by 23% to 0.51° at 9.73 kbar, as well as increases by 2% from 0.536° to 0.548° from 1.8 to 2.5 K, before decreasing by 79% to 0.117° at 19 K. The interlattice interactions are attributed to be the primary exchange mechanism. Furthermore, α(T) and α(P) have similar dependencies that are attributed to a competition between an increase and a decrease in the intra- and interlayer C … N interlattice separations as the temperature and pressure increases.
