Designing ultrastable Pt/CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 nanosheet catalysts for three-way catalysts applications

Designing Rh-free, especially Pt-only, three-way catalysts with improved low-temperature activity/stability is highly desirable. Herein, we demonstrate that ultrastable Pt/CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 nanosheet catalysts can be obtained based on a Sabatier principle of metal-support interaction. Tuning the surface coverage of penta-site rich γ-Al 2 O 3 nanosheets (AlNS, weak adhesion to Pt) by CeO 2 “nano-islands” (strong adhesion to Pt) can lead to the synthesis of Pt/60 wt.%CeO 2 -AlNS that have lower light-off temperatures for CO, hydrocarbons, and NO compared to conventional Pt/CeO 2 and Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts by 100–200°C and a similar performance with the state-of-the-art Rh-based catalyst. Further, incorporating CeO 2 on the surface of AlNS can retard the sintering of CeO 2 during harsh redox hydrothermal aging, associate with the strong interaction between CeO 2 “nano-island” and penta-site rich γ-Al 2 O 3 nanosheets. Moreover, the improved activity/stability of Pt/CeO 2 -AlNS catalysts can be attributed to tuning of the Pt detachment and migration from and back to the CeO 2 “nano-islands”, respectively, that keeps Pt as nanoclusters on CeO 2 , the most active species for three-way catalyst applications.

Born effective charges and electric polarization in bulk ε-Fe 2 O 3 : An ab-initio approach

Limitation in the synthesis of single-crystal has restricted the complete understanding of the magnetoelectric properties of bulk ε-Fe 2 O 3 . In order to understand the electric polarization of bulk ε-Fe 2 O 3 , we have employed a first-principles Berry-phase method and the density functional perturbation theory to calculate the spontaneous electric polarization and Born effective charges (BECs) of ε-Fe 2 O 3 . The polarization quanta of the ferroelectric bulk ε-Fe 2 O 3 and its polarization lattice are also reported. The polarization switching through a paraelectric transition phase of a low barrier is found to be favorable. The polarization and BECs calculated by both methods are in good agreement.

Reaction of N 2 O with the prototype singlet biradical CH 2 : A theoretical study

Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is currently the most important ozone-depleting substance emission and is a potent greenhouse gas. It is also a remarkably unreactive chemical species. Any loss processes for N 2 O in the troposphere and combustion can be important. Therefore, as part of an effort to investigate how N 2 O reacts with prototypical chemical species, its reaction with singlet methylene (CH 2 ) is studied here using high accuracy thermochemistry mHEAT-345(Q) calculations, together with two-dimensional (E,J) master equation simulations. Two distinct mechanisms (an addition/elimination and an O-abstraction) have been characterized. The reaction is found to be very fast with a negative temperature dependence.

Enhanced activity and stability of MgO-promoted Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst for dry reforming of methane: Role of MgO

Highly dispersed nickel nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on Al 2 O 3 NPs by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Various amounts of MgO were loaded on Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts by the incipient wetness (IW) method for dry reforming of methane. Fresh and used catalysts were systematically characterized to reveal the effects of MgO on the catalytic performance. MgO was found to increase the basic amount and basic strength of catalyst surfaces, which provided additional surface oxygen species and assisted the adsorption and activation of CO 2 . Although the formation of NiO-MgO solid solution, during the calcination of incipient wetness, did not improve the overall reducibility, the Ni NPs from NiO-MgO solid solution after reduction formed an intimate interaction with MgO, which could inhibit Ni NPs from sintering and provide sufficient metal-support interface for CO 2 activation. The MgO-promoted Ni/Al 2 O 3 reached a methane reforming rate of 1780 L CH4 g Ni -1 h -1 at 850 °C, which is 26% more than that of the pristine Ni/Al 2 O 3 . Finally, the higher CO 2 activity enhanced the oxidation rate of the surface carbon generated from side-reactions, thereby resulting in a higher reforming rate and inhibiting coke formation, especially the detrimental graphitic encapsulating carbon on the active nickel surface.

Contribution of decomposing plant roots to N 2 O emissions by water absorption

The “sponge effect”, or water absorption by incorporated plant leaf residues, was recently identified as one of the mechanisms that drives activity in microbial hotspots. We explored the presence of the sponge effect in plant root residues, and its role in root decomposition and associated N 2 O and CO 2 emissions. Young soybean (Glycine max) plants were grown in microcosms with two soil materials dominated by (i) large (>30 μm Ø) and (ii) small (<10 μm Ø) pores. After termination, the microcosms with the decomposing roots were incubated at 50% and 75% water-filled pore space (WFPS) soil moisture levels. Root decomposition, water absorption by the decomposing roots, and water redistribution were quantified using X-ray computed micro-tomography (μCT), including dual-energy scanning. The results demonstrated occurrence of the sponge effect in young, in-situ grown soybean roots and sharp gradients in the distribution of the added liquid within ~150 µm distance from the decomposing roots. At 50% WFPS the large pore soil emitted 185% more N 2 O than the small pore soil; and, during the first 5 days of incubation, more N 2 O than the large pore soil at 75% WFPS. This finding indicates that the decomposing roots acted as hotspots of N 2 O production, potentially due to sponge effect and associated anoxic conditions. This study suggests that the interactions between pore characteristics and soil moisture can play a significant role in defining the contribution of detritusphere, specifically, decomposing young roots, to soil biogeochemical processes, including microbial activity and denitrification dynamics.

Role of mixed conducting Pr 0.1 Gd 0.1 Ce 0.8 O 1.9-δ barrier layer on the promotion of SOFC performance

The cathode activity in a solid oxide fuel cell can be promoted by introducing various catalysts to reduce its polarization resistance towards oxygen reduction, and thus improve cell performance. Here, in this work, the La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3 (LSCF) cathode surface is modified by the infiltration of Pr 6 O 11 and the power density at 0.8 V and 750 °C is improved by 21%. Moreover, by replacing the traditional barrier layer Gd 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 1.9 with mixed conducting Pr 0.1 Gd 0.1 Ce 0.8 O 1.9 (PGCO), the power density increases by 38%. The ohmic resistance is dramatically reduced by applying the PGCO interlayer. The distribution of relaxation time was used to analyze the mechanism for which the polarization resistance was decreased, attributing to the mixed conduction nature in PrO x . An increase of power density, ~0.358 W/cm 2 (71%) at 0.8 V, is achieved with the implementation of both surface modification and buffer layer engineering.

Sol-gel synthesis of nano-scale, end-member albite feldspar (NaAlSi 3 O 8 )

Feldspars are the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust, and are also important constituents of many lunar rocks and some stony meteorites. Albite (NaAlSi 3 O 8 ) makes up the sodium corner of the feldspar ternary diagram (KAlSi 3 O 8 - NaAlSi 3 O 8 – CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 ) and connects the alkali-feldspar and plagioclase binary joins. Synthesis of albite, however, has long been a problem, even at high temperatures and even at high pressures when dry. In fact, most successful syntheses require the combination of high-pressure, high-temperature, and hydrothermal environments. Here, this paper presents a sol–gel method of albite synthesis that requires hydrothermal processing followed by high-temperature recrystallization, but no high-pressure environments. This has the advantage of allowing synthesis of relatively large amounts of material and controlled elemental substitutions.

Magnetic phase diagram of A 2 [FeCl 5 (H 2 O)] ( A = K, Rb, NH 4 )

Here, erythrosiderites with the formula A 2 FeX 5 ∙H 2 O, where A = Rb, K, and (NH 4 ) and X = Cl and Br are intriguing systems that possess various magnetic and electric phases, as well as multiferroic phases in which magnetism and ferroelectricity are coupled. In this report, we study the magnetic phase diagram of erythrosiderites as a function of superexchange interactions and magnetic anisotropies. To this end, we perform classical Monte Carlo simulations on magnetic Hamiltonians that contain five different superexchange interactions with single-ion anisotropies. Our phase diagram contains all magnetic ground states that have been experimentally observed in these materials. We argue that the ground states can be explained by varying the ratio of $\frac{J_4}{J_2}$. For $\frac{J_4}{J_2}$ > 0.95 a cycloidal spins structure is stabilized as observed in (NH 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ∙H 2 O and otherwise a collinear spin structure is stabilized as observed in (K,Rb) 2 FeCl 5 ∙H 2 O. We also show that the difference in the single-ion anisotropy along a- and c- axes is essential to stabilize the intermediate state observed in (NH) 2 FeCl 5 ∙H 2 O.

Fission gas diffusion and release for Cr 2 O 3 -doped UO 2 : From the atomic to the engineering scale

Here, the anticipated benefits of large grains in Cr 2 O 3 -doped UO 2 pellets include improved mechanical and fission gas retention properties. To support the assessment of fission gas release (FGR) from doped pellets, the impact of doping on fission gas diffusivity for in-reactor conditions must be understood. In this work, we tackle this issue by informing the fission gas model within the BISON fuel performance code using material models developed at the atomic scale. The investigation of intra-granular fission gas diffusivity in Cr 2 O 3 -doped UO 2 is carried out by adapting a cluster dynamics model that, accounting for UO 2 thermochemistry, is capable of describing Xe diffusion under irradiation in undoped UO 2 as the starting point. Using a thermodynamic analysis, it is shown that in stoichiometric UO 2 with additions of Cr 2 O 3 the oxygen potential is defined by the Cr-Cr 2 O 3 two-phase equilibrium. Using the cluster dynamics model, the predicted Xe diffusivity in doped UO 2 was significantly increased in both the intrinsic and irradiation-enhanced regimes compared to undoped UO 2 as a result of higher concentrations of uranium and oxygen vacancies, respectively. This is a consequence of the more oxidizing conditions at high temperature, and more reducing conditions at low temperature, as a result of doping. Arrhenius functions have been fitted to the cluster dynamics results to enable implementation of the new diffusivities in the BISON fission gas behavior model. BISON simulations were carried out, showing the competing effects of the enlarged grains and the new fission gas diffusivity model, which act to suppress and enhance fission gas release, respectively. The new physics-informed model was validated against in-reactor experimental measurements under normal operation. Additionally, benchmarking was carried out for power ramp conditions. The predicted fission gas release agreed well with the experimental data, showing noticeable improvements over the standard UO 2 model.

Equilibrium distribution of point defects in Fe-Y-O as a typical representative of nanocluster-strengthened alloys

The statistical mechanic approach has been used to estimate the equilibrium defect distribution in a multiphase system by minimizing its free energy using microstructural characteristics and a finite set of defects obtained by first-principles calculations. Recently the approach was extended to take in consideration defects at the interface of the precipitate and matrix. Herein we apply the developed approach to the investigation of the stability of bcc Fe containing yttria, Y 2 O 3 , nanoclusters as a prototype of nanostructured ferritic alloys. It has been obtained that (100)Fe-O interface is unstable with respect to vacancies production. In a contrast to (100)Fe-O interface, the so called Klim interface is stable, i.e. local vacancy concentration at this interface at 600 K is below 10 -12 . It has been demonstrated that due to large defect formation energies the ODS particles are extremely stable and the main defect corresponds to Fe atoms substitute Y in Y 2 O 3 precipitate. Moreover, under thermodynamic equilibrium condition, the preexist vacancies in bulk Fe do not accumulate oxygen atom. The later observation not necessarily forbid the existence of a large amount of preexisting Fe vacancy - oxygen atom clusters at the initial stages of alloy formation far from equilibrium.

Optical vibrational spectroscopic signatures related to U 3 O 8 production processes

Uranium ore concentrates are materials found early within the nuclear fuel cycle and contain high concentrations of uranium in an easily transported form, making the concentrates a likely target for illegal diversion. These concentrates are typically converted to U 3 O 8 for further processing and, therefore, may lose specific physicochemical characteristics in determining the materials’ source and processing history. In this work, we explore the Raman spectra of eight oxide samples produced from various uranium ore concentrates and processing pathways to examine the presence of spectroscopic signatures relating to each sample's process history. Samples produced from amine extraction and dialkylphosphoric acid extraction processes show unique characteristics due to high concentrations of α-UO 3 , whereas samples calcinated from metallic diuranates do not form pure α-U 3 O 8 because of metallic ion inclusions. Pure α-U 3 O 8 oxide samples are obtained through calcination of ammonium diuranate, ammonium uranyl carbonate, and metastudtite intermediates. The Raman spectra of these oxide samples show close agreement with pristine α-U 3 O 8 spectra. However, deviations from the pristine spectra are observed in the 300–460 cm -1 spectral range. In conclusion, these deviations are unique identifying signatures that were likely created by lasting effects from the process history. Spectral center of mass calculations indicate grouping of samples based on processing history.

New Synthesis Strategies to Improve Co-Free LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 Cathodes: Early Transition Metal d0 Dopants and Manganese Pyrophosphate Coating

In this work, we report solution-based doping and coating strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of the Co-free layered oxide cathode LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 (LNMO). Small amounts of d0 dopants (e.g., Mo6+and Ti4+, 0.5-1 at. %) increase the cathode’s specific capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability. More specifically, a Mo-doped cathode with the nominal composition LiNi0.495Mn0.495Mo0.01O2 achieves a high reversible capacity of 180 mAh/g at 20 mA/g with good retention at higher rates (e.g., 120 mAh/g at 100 mA/g). Effects of 1 at.% Mo dopant on the cathode structure were studied using a suite of characterization tools including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These measurements demonstrate that Mo6+ reduces Li+/Ni2+cation mixing and mitigates undesirable phase transformations near the cathode surface during cycling. This work also reports the use of an inorganic Mn2P2O7 coating which enhances cycling stability, presumably through formation of a stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer. Overall, the synthesis approaches reported herein are quite general and can potentially be expanded to other high voltage LIB cathodes.

(CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy core-shell nanocomposite with excellent electrochemical performance as lithium-ion battery anode

High entropy oxides (HEOs) have an excellent potential for use as electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical specific capacity. In this work, spinel-structured (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 HEO nanoparticles with five elements in equal molar ratio is first generated by solution combustion method. (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomposites are prepared by in-situ polymerization method. As an anode for lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical performance of the (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy composite outperforms that of (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The capacity is 802 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA/g, 416 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 1 A/g, and 360 mAh/g rate capacity at 2 A/g. The excellent electrochemical performance of the composites is mainly due to the fact that the conductive and flexible PPy is encapsulated on the high-entropy oxides, which can alleviate the volume change triggered by extraction-insertion of lithium ions process, as well as enhance the electrical conductivity and reduce the occurrence of some side reactions. Finally, this method of compositing materials can also be used in other HEOs and conductive polymers, providing a new idea to enhance the electrochemical properties of HEOs.

Structure of triple perovskite BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 revisited

An experimental investigation of the structure and crystal-chemistry of the triple perovskite BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 is reported. Polycrystalline BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 was synthesized via solid-state reaction and its structure quantitatively probed at 10 and 300 K using neutron diffraction. Monoclinic (A2/m, a 0 $\bar{b}$ – $b$ – ) and trigonal structural models (P$\bar{3}$c1, a – a – a – ) were fit to diffraction data. The former was found to correctly reproduce experimental intensities, while the latter failed to do so. This difference is attributed to the ability of the monoclinic model to accurately reflect octahedral tilting. BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 features corner-sharing MgO 6 and TaO 6 octahedra with barium and strontium cations occupying cubooctahedral holes. Barium and strontium are disordered over the A site, whereas B site cations magnesium and tantalum are ordered. Finally, chemical substitution of strontium for barium in Ba 3 MgTa 2 O 9 induces tilting of MgO 6 and TaO 6 octahedra in two directions and geometric distortions of MgO 6 octahedra.

Improving understanding of NpO 2 and Np 2 O 5 through vibrational spectroscopy

Raman spectra of three NpO 2 samples and two samples produced from a modified direct denitration (MDD) process were collected. The spectral features of the NpO 2 samples were consistent and indicated only NpO 2 . The spectra of the MDD samples indicated the presence of NpO 2 and an additional phase attributed to the neptunium binary oxide Np 2 O 5 . These Raman spectra are the first reported of Np 2 O 5 , and the proportions of these neptunium oxide phases varied within the samples, suggesting significant sample inhomogeneity. Peaks in the Raman spectra of Np 2 O 5 at 569 and 782 cm –1 were tentatively assigned to concerted, symmetric stretches of the neptunyl cations. Finally, laser-induced heating of regions in the MDD samples that were rich in Np 2 O 5 showed spectral features that indicated conversion to NpO 2 .

Enhanced long-term cyclability in Li-Rich layered oxides by electrochemically constructing a Li x TM 3-x O 4 -type spinel shell

The poor long-term cycling stability, including the fast capacity fade and the severe voltage decay, has become the main concern hindering the practical application of Li-rich layered oxides, a promising cathode for high- energy-density Li-ion battery. Herein, we design and electrochemically construct a ~10 nm-thick Li x TM 3-x O 4 - type (TM ¼Ni, Co, Mn, 0 3 O 4 -type spinel phase and the good Liþconductivity of LiMn 2 O 4 -type spinel phase. Systemic structural and electrochemical analysis demonstrate that, it slows down the activation rate of Li 2 MnO 3 component and efficiently alleviates the lattice O loss at high voltage (>4.5 V) and Mn dissolution, thereby suppressing the structural degradation from the layered phase to the spinel phase in the bulk, eventually significantly enhancing the long-term cycling stability. This study adds richness into the Mn-based spinel phase system and provides a new heterostructure design strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of Li-rich layered cathodes and beyond.

Demonstration of o-Ps detection with a cylindrical array of NaI detectors

Ortho-positronium (o-Ps) is a bound state of an electron and positron that can provide a means of searching for new physics. We searched and identified o-Ps in our cylindrical array of NaI(Tl) scintillators, developing a technique for tagging on o-Ps with any one of the 24 bars in the array. With high angular efficiency and this new technique, such an experimental setup could be used in a fundamental symmetries search. In particular, we explore the possibility of using such a setup with a search for CP- or CPT-violation in o-Ps.

The compound crystallizes in the RbGa 7 O 11 structure type, which is reminiscent of the hollandite and β-Ga 2 O 3 structure types. RGTO crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2/m with lattice parameters a = 8.3355 (8) Å, b = 3.0286 (3) Å, c = 9.5028 (9) Å, and β = 114.620 (3)°. The crystal structure of RGTO is comprised of GaO 6 and mixed (Ga/Ti)O 6 octahedra and GaO 4 tetrahedra connected in a complex three-dimensional, anionic framework exhibiting eight-sided channels that are occupied by disordered Rb cations required for charge balance. First-principles calculations in the form of density functional theory were performed, which indicated the complex to be a charge transfer semiconductor.
