Lidar observations of the nighttime sodium layer at 33 deg N

Measurements of the nighttime atmospheric sodium layer have been performed since 1977, using a dye lidar at Fukuoka (33.4 deg N, 130.2 deg E.). The Kyushu lidar uses a flashlamp pumped dye laser tuned to the sodium D sub 2 line (589.0 nm) as a transmitter. The dye laser used in the Kyushu lidar system has been described elsewhere. Sporadic enhancements of the total column abundance of the layer during the Perseids meteor shower were observed on the nights of August 12 and 13, 1978, 1979, 1981, and 1983. Degrading weather conditions prevented observation on the nights during 1980 and 1983. A contour plot of the sodium layer for the period of 8 hours from 21:00 to 5:00 JST on the night of August 12 to 13 1983, is shown. The predominant feature visible is the increase in the height of peak density from 21:00 to 2:00 JST, and the slight decrease in the height of peak density from 2:00 to 5:00 JST. The average abundance had a maximum of about 7 x 10 to the 13th power/sq m on August 13. A plot is presented of the nightly average abundance for available data. The sodium layer abundance increased on the night of August 12 to 13, 1983, during the peak of the Perseids meteor shower, and the following night, August 13 to 14, almost went back to the monthly mean.

Observation of total ozone fields in the Antarctic atmosphere from TOVS of TIROS-N/NOAA

Total ozone amounts in the Antarctic atmosphere are derived from infrared nadir scanning data of TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) of NOAA-6 and 7. HRPT data of the TIROS-N NOAA series of meteorological satellites have been received at Syowa Station (69 deg 00'S, 39 deg 35'E), Antarctica, about once a day since February 1980, by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. HIRS/2 data of TOVS were extracted from HRPT data after being converted into CCT at the home institute. Total ozone amounts were derived for the northeastern part of the Antarctic, for about 100 orbits in 1981 and 1982.

A reexamination of important N2 cross sections by electron impact with application to the dayglow - The Lyman-Birge-Hopfield band system and N I (1199.99 nm)

The emission cross section (cascade plus direct excitation) and predissociation cross section for the Lyman-Birge-Hopfield band systems is experimentally measured. The results are compared to electron energy loss measurements of the direct excitation cross section. An analytic approximation to the measured cross section is obtained which demonstrates the extreme simplicity of the collision strengths at energies above the cross-section peak. Cross sections are also obtained for the FUV atomic nitrogen multiplets. Available cross sections for N I emission at 119.99 nm are discussed in detail.

Spectral and temporal characteristics of AlGaAs/GaAs superlattice p-i-n photodetectors

Measurements of the spectral and the temporal response of AlGaAs/GaAs p-i-n photodetectors with superlattice intrinsic regions grown by molecular beam epitaxy are reported. The feasibility for high-speed applications is demonstrated by a time constant limited impulse response of 200 ps (full width at half-maximum) when excited near the band edge with 100 ps optical pulses. The theory-predicted and recently verified voltage tunability of the band edge with clearly resolved excitonic resonances was observed. The responsivity was measured to be 0.2 A/W.

Measured wavelengths for n = 4 to 2 transitions in Fe XXIV and Fe XXIII

Accurate wavelength measurements for Fe XXIV and Fe XXIII transitions near 8 A and of the type N = 4 to 2 from solar spectra are presented. The resonance transition in the hydrogenlike ion Mg XII is used as a reference. The measured wavelengths are compared with previous ones and with ab initio and semiempirical calculations that include screening parameters in the nonrelativistic, relativistic, and radiative terms.

A unified n-body and statistical treatment of stellar dynamics

The methods of a new 'hybrid' computed code for stellar dynamics are summarized. All particles in the inner spatial region are followed exactly via a direct N-body code and all particles in the outer spatial region are treated statistically via a distribution function and Fokker-Planck type methods. An intermediate region, with features of both, allows exchange of particles and energy between the outer and inner regions. The code is applied to the period just before core collapse and just after and the results are summarized.

Application of an InGaAsP diode laser to probe photodissociation dynamics - I(asterisk) quantum yields from n- and i-C3F7I and CH3I by laser gain vs absorption spectroscopy

Initial measurements on I-asterisk yields of alkyl iodides at 266 nm are reported using gain vs. absorption spectroscopy with an InGaAsP diode probe laser. The results are 102 percent + or - 4 percent, 102 percent + or - 7 percent, and 73 percent + or - 4 percent for n-C3F7I, i-C3F7I, and CH3I respectively. Future prospects for the development of diode laser systems and for their use in dynamical studies are discussed.

Ultraviolet spectra of the N-type carbon star TX Piscium

Nine IUE low resolution spectra of TX Psc, one of the brightest N-type carbon stars, were analyzed. The integrated flux of the Mg II (UV 1) line (blend of h and k) varies by a factor of 7, and the flux of other lines varies similarly and in phase. No variations greater than a factor of 2 occur in the continuous flux. Synthetic spectra from a model chromosphere show surprisingly good agreement with the IUE observations. The enormous influence of the wings of the Mg I resonance line is noted, suggesting it may be a major part of the well-known violet and ultraviolet opacity in cool carbon stars.

A unified N-body and statistical treatment of stellar dynamics. III - Early postcollapse evolution of globular clusters

The period immediately following the core collapse phase in the evolution of a globular cluster is studied using a hybrid N-body/Fokker-Planck stellar dynamical code. Several core oscillations of the type predicted in earlier work are seen. The oscillations are driven by the formation, hardening, and ejection of binaries by three-body processes, and appear to decay on a timescale of about 10 to the 7th yr, for the choice of 'typical' cluster parameters made here. There is no evidence that they are gravothermal in nature. The mechanisms responsible for the decay are discussed in some detail. The distribution of hard binaries produced by the oscillations is compared with theoretical expectations and the longer term evolution of the system is considered.

Cell performance and defect behavior in proton-irradiated lithium-counterdoped n(+)p silicon solar cells

Lithium-counterdoped n(+)p silicon solar cells were irradiated by 10-MeV protons, and their performance was determined as a function of fluence. It was found that the cell with the highest lithium concentration exhibited the higher radiation resistance. Deep-level transient spectroscopy studies of deep-level defects were used to identify two lithium-related defects. Defect energy levels obtained after the present 10-MeV irradiations were found to be markedly different than those observed after previous 1-MeV electron irradiations. However, the present DLTS data are consistent with previous suggestion by Weinberg et al. (1984) of a lithium-oxygen interaction which tends to inhibit formation of an interstitial boron-oxygen defect.

Photoelectrochemical fabrication of sawtooth gratings in n-GaAs

A photoelectrochemical approach is employed to fabricate exceptionally smooth low-pitch grating structures consisting of polished single crystals of (100) oriented n-GaAs in a sawtooth profile. The depth of the edged features is controlled by monitoring the total coulombs passed, and the rate of etching is precisely controlled by the light intensity, minimizing diffusional gradients in the liquid which may impair the uniformity. Symmetrical grooves spaced 10 microns apart will have a depth of 7.14 microns, and typically, 10-20 percent less total charge is required.

A comparison of the C III, O V, F VI, and Ne VII Delta n = 0 (2-2) line emissions from a laboratory plasma with theoretical predictions and astrophysical observations

Spectra of the Delta n = 0 (2-2) transitions of Be I-like ions, C III, O V, F VI, and Ne VII emitted from the TEXT tokamak, were measured with photometrically calibrated instrumentation and compared to the predictions of several models which differ in their treatment of electron impact excitation, using either the distorted wave or R-matrix approach. It was found that the ions from C III to Ne VII were located near the edge of the plasma, at densities between 10 to the 12th and 13th/cu cm. The experimental line ratios were compared with several sets of computations. Agreement is obtained between the experimental data and computations by using the R-matrix technique. This leads to the conclusion that the effect resonances must be included in collision strength calculations, particularly at low nuclear charge. The results show that the line ratios studied may be used with confidence as electron density diagnostics for laboratory or astrophysical plasmas.

Measurement of steady-state minority-carrier transport parameters in heavily doped n-type silicon

The relevant hole transport and recombination parameters in heavily doped n-type silicon under steady state are the hole diffusion length and the product of the hole diffusion coefficient times the hole equilibrium concentration. These parameters have measured in phosphorus-doped silicon grown by epitaxy throughout nearly two orders of magnitude of doping level. Both parameters are found to be strong functions of donor concentration. The equilibrium hole concentration can be deduced from the measurement. A rigid shrinkage of the forbidden gap appears as the dominant heavy doping mechanism in phosphorus-doped silicon.

A flash spectrum of Cl I, C I, N I, and Ni II absorption in 31 Cygni: A direct observation of the reversing layer

In the process of surveying IUE observations of the zeta Aurigae binary system 31 Cygni for evidence of a shock, the presence of narrow low temperature lines Cl I, C I, N I, and Ni II has been discovered. These lines cannot be due to the local interstellar medium, since they appear only in one of the 16 high resolution, short wavelength observations made of this system. The phase of their appearance is theta = 0.017, approximately two months after egress of the blue dwarf component from eclipse behind the cool supergiant. Such lines might be produced by the shining of the hot dwarf companion's continuum through the edge of the supergiant's reversing layer or through a condensation in the supergiant atmosphere. If the former is the case, then the height of the reversing layer may be estimated from this observation. The radial velocities and equivalent widths of ten of these lines have been measured and the former is found to be -8.2 +/- 0.5 km/sec, precisely equal to the radial velocity of the system center of mass. This places a strict upper limit on the rotational velocity of the supergiant: V sub rot less than 2 km/s to better than 3 sigma.

Large optical nonlinearities in a GaAs/AlGaAs hetero n-i-p-i structure

Light-induced changes in the absorption of a multiple quantum well hetero n-i-p-i structure at room temperature have been measured using a pump-probe method. Changes in the absorption coefficient in the quantum wells of more than 2000/cm have been observed with pump intensities as small as 375 mW/sq cm. Corresponding changes in the index of refraction of about 0.02 have been calculated.

Characterization and modelling of open tube diffused n+p bulk InP solar cells

The authors describe the photovoltaic characteristics of an n+p junction solar cell fabricated on bulk InP by an open-tube-diffusion technique. Analysis of the forward characteristics shows that the forward current is dominated by recombination in the quasineutral regions, indicating that the fabrication technique produces a clean junction. Spectral response measurements are analyzed and more realistic boundary conditions are used to model the solar cell to determine important material and device parameters.

Radiation damage and defect behavior in proton irradiated lithium-counterdoped n+p silicon solar cells

Two lithium-counterdoped n+p silicon solar cells with different lithium concentrations were irradiated by 10-MeV protons. Cell performance was measured as a function of fluence, and it was found that the cell with the highest concentration of lithium had the highest radiation resistance. Deep level transient spectroscopy which showed two deep level defects that were lithium related. Relating the defect energy levels obtained from this study with those from earlier work using 1-MeV electron irradiation shows no correlation of the defect energy levels. There is one marked similarity: the absence of the boron-interstitial-oxygen-interstitial defect. This consistency strengthens the belief that lithium interacts with oxygen to prevent the formation of the boron interstitial-oxygen interstitial defect. The results indicate that, in general, addition of lithium in small amounts to the p-base of a boron doped silicon solar cell such that the base remains p-type, tends to increase the radiation resistance of the cell.
