An automatic apparatus is described for microbiologically sampling surface using a cotton swab which eliminates human error. The apparatus includes a self-powered transport device, such as a motor-driven wheeled cart, which mounts a swabbing motor drive for a crank arm which supports a swab in the free end thereof. The swabbing motor is pivotably mounted and an actuator rod movable responsive to the cart traveling a predetermined distance provides lifting of the swab from the surface being sampled and reversal of the direction of travel of the cart.
An automatic inoculating apparatus for agar trays is described and using a simple inoculating element, such as a cotton swab or inoculating loop. The apparatus includes a movable carriage for supporting the tray to be inoculated, a drive motor for moving the tray along a trackway, and a swabbing motor for automatically swabbing the tray during the movement. An actuator motor controls lowering of the inoculating element onto the tray and lifting of the inoculating element. An electrical control system, including limit microswitches, enables automatic control of the actuator motor and return of the carriage to the initial position after inoculating is completed.
The experimental procedures used in the investigation are considered, taking into account solidification and heat treatment, fatigue testing, questions of test specimen and loading fixture design verification, metallographic techniques, and electron microscopy techniques. Attention is given to the characteristics of the microstructure, aspects of fatigue crack propagation (FCP) in the Ni-Ni3Nb composite, the effect of test variables on FCP, the effect of metallurgical variables on FCP, and fatigue fracture mechanisms. Fractographic and metallographic observations are discussed.
Environmental Design Criteria Monographs have been published to give the designer of spacecraft and the planner of space missions the best information which is currently available concerning the environmental conditions existing in various areas of outer space. Information is provided concerning the solar electromagnetic radiation, the earth's atmosphere, the earth albedo, the earth's trapped radiation belts, the Mars' atmosphere, the Venus atmosphere, the surface of Mars, the planet Jupiter, the planet Mercury, the planet Saturn, Titan's atmosphere, and the assessment and control of the magnetic fields of a spacecraft.
An automatic single-slide Gram staining device is described. A timer-actuated solenoid controls the dispensing of gentian violet, Gram iodine solution, decolorizer, and 1% aqueous safranin in proper sequence and for the time required for optimum staining. The amount of stain or reagent delivered is controlled by means of stopcocks below each solenoid. Used stains and reagents can be flushed automatically or manually. Smears Gram stained automatically are equal in quality to those prepared manually. The time to complete one Gram cycle is 4.80 min.

Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology was applied to the assessment of air quality, and its usefulness was evaluated by actual field tests. Necessary hardware was successfully constructed and operated in the field. Measurements of necessary physical parameters, such as SO2 absorption coefficients were successfully completed and theoretical predictions of differential absorption performance were reported. Plume modeling improvements were proposed. A full scale field test of equipment, data analysis and auxiliary data support was conducted in Maryland during September 1976.
A simple apparatus and method is disclosed for making individual single Gram stains on bacteria inoculated slides to assist in classifying bacteria in the laboratory as Gram-positive or Gram-negative. The apparatus involves positioning a single inoculated slide in a stationary position and thereafter automatically and sequentially flooding the slide with increments of a primary stain, a mordant, a decolorizer, a counterstain and a wash solution in a sequential manner without the individual lab technician touching the slide and with minimum danger of contamination thereof from other slides.

The Multi-Purpose System Simulator (MPSS) model was used to investigate the current and projected performance of the Monitor and Control Display System (MACDS) at the Goddard Space Flight Center in processing and displaying launch data adequately. MACDS consists of two interconnected mini-computers with associated terminal input and display output equipment and a disk-stored data base. Three configurations of MACDS were evaluated via MPSS and their performances ascertained. First, the current version of MACDS was found inadequate to handle projected launch data loads because of unacceptable data backlogging. Second, the current MACDS hardware with enhanced software was capable of handling two times the anticipated data loads. Third, an up-graded hardware ensemble combined with the enhanced software was capable of handling four times the anticipated data loads.

The development and demonstration of lidar techniques for the remote measurement of atmospheric constituents and transport processes in the lower troposphere was carried out. Particular emphasis was given to techniques for monitoring SO2 and particulates, the principal pollutants in power plant and industrial plumes. Data from a plume dispersion study conducted in Maryland during September and October 1976 were reduced, and a data base was assembled which is available to the scientific community for plume model verification. A UV Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) was built, and preliminary testing was done.

A wind tunnel test program was conducted to demonstrate the active wing/store flutter suppression systems on a lightweight fighter aircraft. The program, completed in mid-1978, included the design, analysis, fabrication, and testing of a scale model. The tests were conducted at the NASA Langley 16-ft Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. Three store configurations were selected for testing. Two of these configurations were deliberately designed to exhibit low flutter speeds with rapid reductions in damping at the incipient flutter condition. After initial tunnel entries, which showed the need for certain improvements in the model and the control system design, substantial increases in the flutter speeds were achieved using both leading- and trailing-edge control surfaces, separately. For the most critical configuration, a demonstrated improvement of 18% and a projected improvement of 29% in the dynamic pressure were achieved.
The effects of room temperature tensile loading and five thermal loadings, in the range -320 F (-196C) to 625F (330CC), upon the development of transverse microcracks (TVM) in Celion 6000/PMR-15 graphite-polyimide laminates were investigated. Microcracks were observed using a replicating technique, microscopy and X-ray. The mechanical or thermal load at which microcracking initiates and the ply residual stresses were predicted using laminate analysis with stress- and temperature-dependent material properties.
Acoustical properties of coal can be measured accurately and with relative ease with aid of digital two-channel sine-wave sound generator. Generator is expected to provide information for development of acoustic devices for measuring thickness of coal in longwall mining. In echo-cancellation measurements, sound bursts are sent to coal sample from opposite directions. Transmitted and reflected amplitudes and phases are measured by transducers to determine coal properties.
"Torque-stripe" paint withstands wide range of temperatures. The bright yellow paint, brushed on electrical connector, serves as both locking agent and indicator of loosened connection: Crack in paint stripe is readily visible and shows that bolts that are exposed to extremes of heat and cold.
