Ultrasonic evaluation of the strength of unidirectional graphite-polyimide composites

An acoustic-ultrasonic method is described that was successful in ranking unidirectional graphite-polyimide composite specimens according to variations in interlaminar shear strength. Using this method, a quantity termed the stress wave factor was determined. It was found that this factor increases directly with interlaminar shear strength. The key variables in this investigation were composite density, fiber weight fraction, and void content. The stress wave factor and other ultrasonic factors that were studied were found to provide a powerful means for nondestructive evaluation of mechanical strength properties.

Lewis Research Center support of Chrysler upgraded engine program

Running of the upgraded engine has indicated that, although the engine is mechanically sound, it is deficient in power. Recent modifications and corrective action have improved this. Testing of the engine is being done in the test cell. This simulates an automobile installation. Located in the inlet flow ducts are two turbine flow meters to measure engine air flow.

The challenge of detecting gravitational radiation is creating a new chapter in quantum electronics: Quantum nondemolition measurements

Future gravitational wave antennas will be approximately 100 kilogram cylinders, whose end-to-end vibrations must be measured so accurately (10 to the -19th power centimeters) that they behave quantum mechanically. Moreover, the vibration amplitude must be measured over and over again without perturbing it (quantum nondemolition measurement). This contrasts with quantum chemistry, quantum optics, or atomic, nuclear, and elementary particle physics where measurements are usually made on an ensemble of identical objects, and care is not given to whether any single object is perturbed or destroyed by the measurement. Electronic techniques required for quantum nondemolition measurements are described as well as the theory underlying them.

An intense soft high-latitude X-ray source H2156-304 - A new BL Lacertae object

The discovery of an intense high-latitude soft X-ray source (designated H2156-304) detected with the low-energy detectors of the HEAO A-2 experiment is reported. The error box of the source includes a 14th mag starlike object that may be coincident with the radio source PKS 2155-304 and has been suggested as a BL Lac candidate. Intensity variations of H2156-304 on time scales of about 1 sec to 1 day are discussed, along with a probable flare from the source. The derived energy spectrum of the source is shown to be well fitted by either a two-temperature thermal model with temperatures of 16 million and 1.6 million K or a single power-law model with a spectral index of 2.4 + or - 0.3. Hydrogen column densities of approximately 2.5 x 10 to the 20th and 2.0 x 10 to the 20th H atoms/sq cm are obtained for the two-temperature and power-law models, respectively. The emission mechanism of H2156-304 is considered, and the characteristics of this source are compared with those of three known soft X-ray-emitting BL Lac objects.

Quiet Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE) main reduction gears test program

Sets of under the wing (UTW) engine reduction gears and sets of over the wing (OTW) engine reduction gears were fabricated for rig testing and subsequent installation in engines. The UTW engine reduction gears which have a ratio of 2.465:1 and a design rating of 9712 kW at 3157 rpm fan speed were operated at up to 105% speed at 60% torque and 100% speed at 125% torque. The OTW engine reduction gears which have a ratio of 2.062:1 and a design rating of 12,615 kW at 3861 rpm fan speed were operated at up to 95% speed at 50% torque and 80% speed at 109% torque. Satisfactory operation was demonstrated at powers up to 12,172 kW, mechanical efficiency up to 99.1% UTW, and a maximum gear pitch line velocity of 112 m/s (22,300 fpm) with a corresponding star gear spherical roller bearing DN of 850,00 OTW. Oil and star gear bearing temperatures, oil churning, heat rejection, and vibratory characteristics were acceptable for engine installation.

Submillimetre observations of atomic carbon

Emission from the ground state fine structure transition of atomic carbon at 610 microns has been observed in Galactic sources. From comparison of the observations with CO emission, it can be deduced that the abundance of neutral carbon relative to CO is high (approximately 0.1-3). The spatial and velocity distribution of CI and CO are often very similar. If molecular clouds are older than 1 x 10 to the 6th power years, the observations necessitate a mechanism which can maintain a high abundance of neutral carbon in cloud material, either by hindering complete conversion of C into CO or by physically and chemically rejuvenating the material.

Lithospheric structure in the Pacific geoid

In order that sub-lithospheric density variations be revealed with the geoid, the regional geoid anomalies associated with bathymetric variations must first be removed. Spectral techniques were used to generate a synthetic geoid by filtering the residual bathymetry assuming an Airy-type isostatic compensation model. An unbiased estimated of the admittances show that for region under study, no single compensation mechanism will explain all of the power in the geoid. Nevertheless, because topographic features are mainly coherent with the geoid, to first order an isostationally compensated lithosphere cut by major E-W fracture zones accounts for most of the power in the high degree and other SEASAT geoid in the Pacific.

Personnel occupied woven envelope robot

The use of nonmetallic or fabric structures for space application is considered. The following structures are suggested: (1) unpressurized space hangars; (2) extendable tunnels for soft docking; and (3) manned habitat for space stations, storage facilities, and work structures. The uses of the tunnel as a passageway: for personnel and equipment, eliminating extravehicular activity, for access to a control cabin on a space crane and between free flyers and the space station are outlined. The personnal occupied woven envelope robot (POWER) device is shown. The woven envelope (tunnel) acts as part of the boom of a crane. Potential applications of POWER are outlined. Several possible deflection mechanisms and design criteria are determined.

Radio structure in the inner 1 arcsecond of NGC 1068

High-resolution VLA and VLBI observations of NGC 1068 at several different wavelengths are reported. These observations provide new information about the triple radio source in the central arcsec (75 pc) of the galaxy. The 21-cm European VLBI Network observations at 0.05-arcsec resolution detect a core of flux density 89 + or - 10 mJy. This core is dominated by a component less than 20 marcsec (1.5 pc) in diameter that has a brightness temperature of about 10 to the 8th K. Two more components may have been detected by the VLBI observations, one on either side of the compact core. At 0.07-arcsec resolution, the 1.3-cm VLA map of the central arcsec of NGC 1068 reveals a C-shaped radio morphology on scales from 10 to 50 pc. A comparison of the relative locations of the three components in the VLA and VLBI maps shows that the compact core in the VLBI map probably should be identified with the central component in the 1.3- and 2-cm VLA maps. If this identification is correct, the central component in the VLA maps is the actual nucleus of the galaxy. The core of the inner triple radio source may contain a significant flat-spectrum component. The presence of a compact core and the evidence for bending strengthen the argument that the inner triple radio source is produced by a mechanism similar to that operating in powerful radio galaxies. For a minimum-energy configuration, magnetic-field strengths of about 1 mG and energy densities of about 100 nerg/cu cm are found for the components of this source.

Simple methods of exploiting the underlying structure of rule-based systems

Much recent work in the field of expert systems research has aimed at exploiting the underlying structures of the rule base for reasons of analysis. Such techniques as Petri-nets and GAGs have been proposed as representational structures that will allow complete analysis. Much has been made of proving isomorphisms between the rule bases and the mechanisms, and in examining the theoretical power of this analysis. In this paper we describe some early work in a new system which has much simpler (and thus, one hopes, more easily achieved) aims and less formality. The technique being examined is a very simple one: OPS5 programs are analyzed in a purely syntactic way and a FSA description is generated. In this paper we describe the technique and some user interface tools which exploit this structure.

Consequences of relativistic proton injection in active galactic nuclei

The processes are analyzed by which extremely relativistic protons lose energy under the conditions thought to apply in the central engines of active galactic nuclei. Analytic formulae are derived which permit the consequences of relativistic proton injection under a variety of conditions to be predicted. Different proton cooling mechanisms are compared for a power-law proton injection function and two types of background radiation spectra: power-law and power-law plus blackbody. The kinetic equations for neutrons and protons are examined, and it is shown how to calculate the energy distributions of primary gamma rays and escaping neutrons and neutrinos.

The EXOSS mission for hard X-ray astronomy

The basis for the Energetic X-ray Observatory on Space Station is described. Attention is given to the principal scientific objectives of EXOSS, namely, to study in detail AGN and quasars (some 10,000 should be detectable) as well as compact Galactic sources (accreting white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes), and to probe both nonthermal and high-temperature thermal phenomena and the fundamental nature of these objects. The principal technical characteristics of the EXOSS baseline instrument, which overlap in sensitivity in the approximately 40-to-60-keV band, are presented. EXOSS should facilitate efforts to determine: the central power source and the dominant emission mechanisms in AGN, the ways in which the various AGN classes differ as hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray emitters, and the contribution of AGN to the diffuse hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray background.

A kinetic theory treatment of heat transfer in plane Poiseuille flow with uniform pressure

Plane compressible Poiseuille flow with uniform pressure (Couette flow with stationary boundaries) is revisited where the Lees two-steam method with the Enskog equation of change is applied. Single particle velocity distribution functions are chosen, which preserve the essential physical features of this flow with arbitrary but uniform plate temperatures and gas pressure. Lower moments are shown to lead to expressions for the parameter functions, molecular number densities, and temperatures which are entirely in agreement with those obtained in the analysis of Lees for compressible plane Couette flow in the limit of low Mach number and vanishing mean gas velocity. Important simplifications result, which are helpful in gaining insight into the power of kinetic theory in fluid mechanics. The temperature distribution, heat flux, as well as density, are completely determined for the whole range of Knudson numbers from free molecular flow to the continuum regime, when the pressure level is specified.

The "Universal propeller": built by Paragon Engineers, Inc., Baltimore, Md

At the request of the N.A.C.A. the "Universal Propeller" was operated and explained by the inventor, Mr. Spencer Heath, for the purpose of demonstrating the following features of design: 1) Elimination of continuously running gears, collars or bearings in the pitch control mechanism; 2) The use of engine power in place of manual labor in changing blade angle; 3) The absence of any structural limitation to the range of blade angles available and the possibility of limiting the blade travel between any two predetermined extreme positions; 4) Continuous indication on the instrument board of the blade position; 5) Automatic throttling of the engine while the propeller is passing through the position of neutral pitch.
