A continuing search for companions to PRG stars

Results are presented from observations, made with the SWP spectrograph at low resolution, of Tc-deficient S and C members of the group of chemically peculiar red giant (PRG) stars, which were carried out to search for possible companions to these stars. The results support the hypothesis of Little et al. (1987) and Smith and Lambert (1987, 1988) that the chemical peculiarities of T-deficient S and MS PRG stars have arisen due to mass transfer from white dwarf companions.

New measurements of the 6190-A band of methane

The present paper reports new laboratory measurements that were made of the absorption coefficient of the visible methane band at 6190 A. Data were obtained using a tunable dye laser system operating with a line width of 0.067/cm. Spectra were recorded at approximately 1-A intervals with the beam coupled to a 22-m base length White-type absorption cell adjusted for an optical path of 1584 km and filled to a density of 0.884 amagats. Errors in pressure, temperature, and path length amounted to an uncertainty in the abundance of no more than 0.4 percent. Fourteen data sets were recorded and coadded. The final signal-averaged methane data were divided by a similar set of signal-averaged empty cell scans to remove the transmittance of the White cell and system optics. The results are compared with previous low-resolution measurements in the spectral region from 6000 to 6400 A.

A new edition of the Mars 1:5,000,000 map series

A new edition of the Mars 1:5,000,000 scale map series is in preparation. Two sheets will be made for each quadrangle. Sheet one will show shaded relief, contours, and nomenclature. Sheet 2 will be a full-color photomosaic prepared on the Mars digital image model (MDIM) base co-registered with the Mars low-resolution color database. The latter will have an abbreviated graticule (latitude/longitude ticks only) and no other line overprint. The four major databases used to assemble this series are now virtually complete. These are: (1) Viking-revised shaded relief maps at 1:5,000,000 scale; (2) contour maps at 1:2,000,000 scale; (3) the Mars digital image model; and (4) a color image mosaic of Mars. Together, these databases form the most complete planetwide cartographic definition of Mars that can be compiled with existing data. The new edition will supersede the published Mars 1:5,000,000 scale maps, including the original shaded relief and topographic maps made primarily with Mariner 9 data and the Viking-revised shaded relief and controlled photomosaic series. Publication of the new series will begin in late 1991 or early 1992, and it should be completed in two years.

Studies of thermal wave phenomena on the Jovian planets

Ground based and Voyager observations of Jupiter have provided evidence that the tropospheric temperature shows global scale longitudinal variations which are often wavelike in character. Voyager data are reported to exhibit the presence of slowly moving thermal features, wherein the jovian tropospheric temperature patterns are not advected by the equatorial zonal winds, but are not found to rotate at the System III (interior) rate. Ground based data in a broad infrared band (8 to 13 micron) show a wavelike structure whose amplitude and spatial scale are similar to the reported properties of the slowly moving thermal features. This study is directed toward obtaining additional ground based data in infrared spectral bands whose contribution functions are optimized for specific atmospheric regions (tropospheric at 20 micron, and stratospheric at 7.8 micron), in order to confirm the previous results, and to identify the nature and physical significance of wavelike longitudinal temperature fluctuations on the Jovian planets. A 2-D infrared array detector and low resolution cryogenic grating spectrometer is being adapted to obtain maps in approx. 2/cm bandpasses.

A spectroscopic investigation of the eclipsing binary Epsilon Aurigae

The objectives were to examine, in detail, the spectra of the eclipsing binary Epsilon Aurigae taken with the IUE satellite telescope during the 1982 to 1984 eclipse. All of the low resolution spectra were analyzed and UV light curves are presented. The primary findings are as follows: (1) a constant eclipse depth from 1600 A to longer wavelengths and a sharp drop in the eclipse depth from 1600 to 1200 A; (2) the absence of large amplitude fluctuations in the UV as expected from a Cepheid primary; and (3) equal ingress and egress times in contradiction to that interpreted from visible light curves. The effects of these findings on the eclipse geometry are being studied.

Precise positioning and compliance synthesis for automatic assembly using Lorentz levitation

Many manufacturing assembly tasks require fine compliant motion and fast, accurate positioning. Conventional robots perform poorly in these tasks because of their large mass, friction and backlash in gears, cogging in drive motors and other deleterious effects. Even robots equipped with special control systems enabling compliant operation offer only partial solutions. It is difficult or impossible to automate many product assemblies requiring fine, compliant motion. This problem can be greatly alleviated by dividing the manipulation system into coarse and fine domains. In this scenario, a standard industrial robot can serve as a coarse positioner which in turn carries a six degrees of freedom fine motion wrist. Thus the robot can access a workspace measured in meters at low bandwidth and low resolution while the wrist can move over millimeters at high bandwidth and high resolution during the final phase of the assembly operation. Work indicates that fine motion wrists using Lorentz levitation can greatly augment the accuracy and dexterity of robots because they are frictionless, have high bandwidths and have a single back drivable moving part. Also, since there is no contact between the moving and stationary parts, wear and contamination can be eliminated. The use of six Lorentz force actuators in combination with real time position and orientation sensing offers several important advantages over magnetic bearing approaches.

IUE spectra of the eclipsing binary NN Serpentis

Low-resolution SWP and LWP IUE spectra are used to fit the temperature and angular radius of the white dwarf in the detached eclipsing binary NN Ser. It is found that the redenning to the system has E(B-V) of 0.05 +/-0.05, the white dwarf temperature is 60,000 +/-10,000 K, and the age of the white dwarf is less than 10 exp 7. The shape of eclipse and the K-magnitude of the secondary star are used to constrain the inclination of the binary and the masses and radii of the two stars. The size of the secondary star relative to its Roche lobe and the age of the white dwarf indicate that mass transfer has not yet occurred and that the system is a precataclysmic variable rather than a cataclysmic variable which has entered the period gap. Fitting the observed magnitude of the sinusoidal modulation with a reprocessing model shows that only when i is approximately equal to 90 deg is the required temperature of the secondary star consistent with these results. For this solution the white dwarf temperature is also consistent with those obtained from the IUE spectra.

Near-infrared observations of the z about 2.3 IRAS source FSC 10214 + 4724

Near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of the extremely luminous IRAS source FSC 10214 + 4724 have been obtained using the Cassegrain infrared camera on the 200-inch Hale Telescope. A low-resolution spectrum in the 2.0-2.4 micron atmospheric window shows a very strong H-alpha line at the optically determined redshift z = 2.286. The observed rest-frame equivalent width of H-alpha is 0.07 +/-0.02 microns, consistent with the largest values found in quasars. The images show an unresolved source, while the near-infrared colors are somewhat redder than the mean colors of quasars observed at the same redshift. The reddening inferred is about 1.5 mag, with an upper limit of about 3.0 mag. If FSC 10214 + 4724 is a quasar, the reddening-corrected bolometric luminosity is approximately equal to the observed infrared luminosity.

New candidates for carbon stars with silicate features

All stars in the General Catalog of Cool Galactic Carbon Stars with IRAS 12-micron fluxes greater than 10 Jy were searched for Low-Resolution-Spectrometer (LRS) spectra in the IRAS LRS data base. Out of the 532 spectra examined, 11 were found to show the 9.7-micron silicate emission feature. Four of these are identified for the first time. This group of carbon stars may represent transition objects between oxygen-rich and carbon-rich stars on the asymptotic giant branch.

A spectrometer for studies of diffuse emission in the 900-1200 A band

A rich assortment of emission processes from the interstellar medium should generate complex spectra in the 900-1200-A regime. However, the detection of these lines is a difficult instrumental task since geocoronal and interplanetary airglow lines form an unwanted background requiring rejection by at least six orders of magnitudes. The design and performance are described of an imaging spectrometer. This spectrometer is designed for 2.5-A spectral resolution, low instrumental scattering, and a high sensitivity to diffuse emission.

Spectroscopy of galaxies in distant clusters. IV - A catalog of photometry and spectroscopy for galaxies in seven clusters with z in the range of 0.35 to 0.55

Photometry and spectroscopy for seven deep fields containing distant clusters of galaxies with z in the range of 0.35 to 0.55 are presented. Positions and photometric parameters, including r-magnitudes g - r and r - i colors, surface brightnesses, and photometric profile types are given for about 2000 galaxies. Low-resolution spectroscopy is obtained from which redshifts are determined for 289 objects, of which 190 are cluster members. These are classified according to dominant spectral features, and examples are plotted in each cluster. Color-magnitude and color-color diagrams are formed which show trends in the cluster populations, and maps are made of the cluster field using the color-color relations to increase the contrast of cluster over field. Galaxies with spectra typical of old stellar populations cluster most strongly, with active galaxies, those with recent or ongoing star formation, or an active nucleus, distributed more diffusely. The g - r color is well correlated with active star formation as judged from spectral features.

AVHRR imagery reveals Antarctic ice dynamics

A portion of AVHRR data taken on December 5, 1987 at 06:15 GMT over a part of Antarctica is used here to show that many of the most significant dynamic features of ice sheets can be identified by a careful examination of AVHRR imagery. The relatively low resolution of this instrument makes it ideal for obtaining a broad view of the ice sheets, while its wide swath allows coverage of areas beyond the reach of high-resolution imagers either currently in orbit or planned. An interpretation is given of the present data, which cover the area of ice streams that drain the interior of the West Antarctic ice sheet into the Ross Ice Shelf.

Candidates for extreme carbon stars

A group of candidates for extreme carbon stars has been identified based on their IRAS low-resolution spectra being similar to those of AFGL 3068 and IRC +10 deg 216, which are prototypes of highly evolved carbon stars with very high mass-loss rates. Ground-based photometry has been obtained for five of these sources in order to determine the peaks of their energy distributions. All five sources have color temperatures between 300 and 500 K, and have energy distributions very similar to AFGL 3068. The observed data are fitted with radiative transfer models with optical depths at 11.3 microns ranging from 1.4 to 8. These results suggest that these stars have among the most optically thick circumstellar envelopes of all carbon stars observed to date.

Techniques in processing multi-frequency multi-polarization spaceborne SAR data

This paper presents the algorithm design of the SIR-C ground data processor, with emphasis on the unique elements involved in the production of registered multifrequency polarimetric data products. A quick-look processing algorithm used for generation of low-resolution browse image products and estimation of echo signal parameters is also presented. Specifically the discussion covers: (1) azimuth reference function generation to produce registered polarimetric imagery; (2) geometric rectification to accommondate cross-track and along-track Doppler drifts; (3) multilook filtering designed to generate output imagery with a uniform resolution; and (4) efficient coding to compress the polarimetric image data for distribution.

The ionization cone, obscured nucleus, and gaseous outflow in NGC 3281 - A prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy?

Narrow-band images and long-slit spectroscopy of the central region of the highly inclined Seyfert galaxy NGC 3281 are presented. The image of the continuum-subtracted forbidden 4959 emission line shows a very clear conical morphology for the high-excitation gas. A possible similar structure can also be seen on the other side of the nucleus, but is dimmed by patchy obscuration in the dusk. The continuum images and long-slit spectroscopy are used to derive and map the extinction in the inner regions of NGC 3281; heavy obscuration is found along the present line of sight to the apex of the cone, suggesting that the true nucleus is located at the apex and is obscured. Low-resolution long-slit spectra are used to study the stellar population, which is found to be old, uniform within 2.5 kpc of the nucleus, and typical of the bulges of early-type galaxies. It is suggested that NGC3281 may be another example of a 'hidden' Seyfert 1, even though there is no direct evidence for a broad-line region in this particular galaxy.

Graphics-Printing Program For The HP Paintjet Printer

IMPRINT utility computer program developed to print graphics specified in raster files by use of Hewlett-Packard Paintjet(TM) color printer. Reads bit-mapped images from files on UNIX-based graphics workstation and prints out three different types of images: wire-frame images, solid-color images, and gray-scale images. Wire-frame images are in continuous tone or, in case of low resolution, in random gray scale. In case of color images, IMPRINT also prints by use of default palette of solid colors. Written in C language.

Correlated hard x ray and UV variability in NGC 5548

Observations of the nucleus of NGC5548 made at 11 different epochs during May - July 1990, in low resolution mode (1000 km/s) and through large apertures (10 by 20 inches) of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectrographs, are discussed. The patterns of variability are considered. Figures showing the following are given: light curves of the continuum in the X-ray and UV bands, together with the light curves of the strongest emission lines; the 2 to 10 KeV X-ray flux as a function of the 1350 A continuum for the 11 epochs of simultaneous X-ray and UV observations; the cross correlation and discrete correlation of F (sub 2 to 10) with F(sub 1350). Implications of the findings are discussed.

AMPR/SSMI data comparisons

The AMPR was flown during CAPE and STORMFEST, during which some good data were gathered. Significant instrument noise problems were encountered in both deployments which appear to be temperature related. These are being fixed before the TOGA COARE deployment. New calibration loads have also been manufactured for the TOGA COARE configuration. Eric Smith at FSU had been analyzing the AMPR data and has written a journal article to be submitted early this summer. The emphasis of his work is on the interpretation of low resolution microwave data from space, based upon what we have learned from the high-resolution AMPR signatures.
