FORMAC integration program: A special applications package used in developing techniques of orbital decay and long term ephemeris prediction for satellites in earth orbit

The symbolic manipulation capabilities of the FORMAC (Formula Manipulation Compiler) language are employed to expand and analytically evaluate integrals. The program integration is effected by expanding the integral(s) into a series of subintegrals and then substituting a pre-derived and pre-coded solution for that particular subintegral. Derivation of the integral solutions necessary for precoding is included, as is a discussion of the FORMAC system limitations encountered in the programming effort.

Telemetry and the integrated avionics approach.

The unique problems encountered in the integrated approach to aircraft and spacecraft avionics system designs are discussed with the emphasis on recent advances in telemetry as a factor facilitating the integration. A listing of subsystems planned for integration on the Space Shuttle vehicle is given, covering auxiliary pumping and propellant, crew controls and displays, computation, communications and radar, electric power, guidance, navigation and control, air-bearing engines, main engines, reaction control, and structural/mechanical elements. Considerations are given for the multiplexed data bus design applicable to integrated avionics.

Space shuttle auxiliary propulsion system design study. Phase C report: Oxygen-hydrogen RCS/OMS integration study

A comparison of the concepts of auxiliary propulsion systems proposed for the space shuttle vehicle is discussed. An evaluation of the potential of integration between the reaction control system and the orbit maneuvering system was conducted. Numerous methods of implementing the various levels of integration were evaluated. Preferred methods were selected and design points were developed for two fully integrated systems, one partially integrated system, and one separate system.

CVT/PCS phase 1 integrated testing

Five breadboard experiments representing three Sortie Lab experiment disciplines were installed in a payload carrier simulator. A description of the experiments and the payload carrier simulator was provided. An assessment of the experiment interface with the simulator and an assessment of the simulator experiment support systems were presented. The results indicate that a hardware integrator for each experiment is essential; a crew chief, or mission specialist, for systems management and experimenter liaison is a vital function; a payload specialist is a practical concept for experiment integration and operation; an integration fixture for a complex experiment is required to efficiently integrate the experiment and carrier; simultaneous experiment utilization of simulator systems caused unexpected problems in meeting individual experiment requirements; experimenter traffic inside the dual-floor simulator did not hamper experiment operations; and the requirement for zero-g operation will provide a significant design challenge for some experiments.

A survey of integrated optics with bibliography

The field of integrated optics is surveyed. Light coupling into films, modulation of light propagating in films, and current integrated optics developments and devices are discussed. It is concluded that integrated optics technology is expected to revolutionize the electronics industry as completely as did microcircuit technology. An extensive bibliography for the field of integrated optics is included.

Development and application of a local linearization algorithm for the integration of quaternion rate equations in real-time flight simulation problems

High angular rates encountered in real-time flight simulation problems may require a more stable and accurate integration method than the classical methods normally used. A study was made to develop a general local linearization procedure of integrating dynamic system equations when using a digital computer in real-time. The procedure is specifically applied to the integration of the quaternion rate equations. For this application, results are compared to a classical second-order method. The local linearization approach is shown to have desirable stability characteristics and gives significant improvement in accuracy over the classical second-order integration methods.

Results of tests in the MSFC 14 x 14 inch trisonic wind tunnel on a .004 scale model of the Rockwell International Space Shuttle Vehicle 3, (integrated configuration)

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted during mid-July, 1973 on a .004 scale model of the Rockwell International integrated configuration Space Shuttle Vehicle 3. The purpose of the tests was three fold: (1) to determine the static stability characteristics of the integrated vehicle, utilizing the Vehicle 3 orbiter configuration; (2) to determine the effect of interstage structure and tank external fuel lines on the integrated vehicle aerodynamic characteristics; (3) to determine the effects of the aft interstage structure on orbiter aerodynamic loads. Data were recorded on the integrated vehicle (test no. 579) at angles of attack and sideslip ranging from -10 deg to 10 deg over a Mach number schedule from 0.6 to 4.96. Data were obtained on the orbiter alone in the presence of the external tank with SRB attached (test no. 580) at angles of attack from -10 deg to 10 deg over a Mach number range from .6 to 1.96. Plotted data are presented in the body axis system.

Application of boundary integral method to elastoplastic analysis of v-notched beams

The boundary integral equation method was applied in the solution of the plane elastoplastic problems. The use of this method was illustrated by obtaining stress and strain distributions for a number of specimens with a single edge notch and subjected to pure bending. The boundary integral equation method reduced the non-homogeneous biharmonic equation to two coupled Fredholm-type integral equations. These integral equations were replaced by a system of simultaneous algebraic equations and solved numerically in conjunction with the method of successive elastic solutions.

Skylab experiment integration overview

The complex Skylab experiment integration task entailed extensive technical interfacing and liaison. The integrator provided continuity as the experiment evolved through the major program phases. The phases included experiment proposal, experiment development, module integration testing, operations support planning, integrated systems testing, and mission support and evaluation. Skylab experiment program responsibilities are discussed along with a compatibility analysis, questions of documentation, status reviews, and aspects of design philosphy.

Numerical orbit integration efficiency of the Delaunay-Similar elements

Orbit equations with a set of conservative and a set of nonconservative perturbing potentials were considered. Scheifele's DS formulation of these equations has dependent variables similar to Delaunay's orbital elements with the true anomaly as the independent variable. Efficiency curves of computing cost v.s. accuracy were constructed for Adams integrators of order of 2 through 15 with several correcting algorithms and for a Runga-Kutta integrator. Considering stability regions, choices were made for the optimally efficient integration modes for the DS elements. Integrating in these modes reduces computing costs for a specified accuracy.

Integration time required to extract accurate static and dynamic data from transonic wind-tunnel tests

Because the forces and pressures on wind-tunnel models tested at transonic speeds are not steady, even for 'static' aerodynamic tests, integration time is required to obtain data of acceptable accuracy. The integration time required for both static and dynamic tests is evaluated analytically and confirmed by experimental measurements. It is shown that, for static and dynamic tests, the accuracy obtained is a function of integration time, frequency content of the signal, and the ratio of the dynamic amplitude to the full signal of interest. In addition, for the dynamic case, the frequency band width used in analysis is important. Results of this study indicate that, for typical data accuracy desired from models in a large transonic wind tunnel (11- by 11-ft), up to the following integration times are required: static force and moment tests, 0.5 sec; static pressure tests, 0.1 sec; flutter tests, 30 to 60 sec; and random-dynamic tests, 10 sec.

Integral representation of field variables for the finite element solution of viscous flow problems

The kinematics aspects of compressible and incompressible viscous flow problems are recasted into an integral representation for the velocity vector. For the incompressible flow problem, the kinetics aspect is similarly recasted into an integral representation. The result is a system of integral equations ideally suited for the finite element method. The integral representations are shown to permit the confinement of the computation field to the region of nonnegligible vorticity and dilatation which, for the incompressible flow, is identified with the viscous region. This drastic reduction in computation field results in a superior solution speed which is further improved by the use of a flowfield segmentation technique. The new approach is further shown to remove the difficulties associated with previous methods in specifying the far field and extraneous boundary conditions.

Integrated potential formulation of unsteady supersonic aerodynamics for interacting wings

A numerical integrated velocity potential method for the determination of unsteady aerodynamic forces on arbitrary interacting wings and tails in supersonic flow has been developed. Constant Mach number has been assumed throughout the flow field. Normalwash and sidewash integrals have been derived. The upwash integral remains to be derived. Singular integrals in the expressions for the velocity components have been evaluated in closed form. Lifting surfaces are represented by triangular elements defined by arbitrarily spaced characteristic lines and the true surface edges. The wake field is represented by rectangular strip elements. Velocity potential distributions and generalized aerodynamic coefficients have been compared.

Integrated auxiliary propulsion for the Space Tug

This paper summarizes the results of a design study which considered several possible methods for applying the liquid-liquid cryogenic oxygen/hydrogen auxiliary propulsion concept to the Space Tug. This concept, which is based on maintaining the propellant in the liquid phase from storage to thruster inlet, is much simpler than previous oxygen/hydrogen systems which converted the propellant to vapor for distribution to the thrusters. The paper describes the selected liquid-liquid concept which is an integrated design that uses the Tug main propulsion tanks as a propellant source. The characteristics of this integrated system are compared with dedicated storable propellant systems. The integrated concept is found to have only slightly superior mission payload performance, but provides inherent vehicle versatility through the interchangeable availability of main and auxiliary propellant. Propellant interchange also was found to permit the auxiliary system to provide abort backup capability in the event of most main engine failures. This capability implies Tug program cost savings which more than offset the higher development costs of the integrated auxiliary propulsion system.

Payload crew activity planning integration. Task 2: Inflight operations and training for payloads

The primary objectives of the Payload Crew Activity Planning Integration task were to: (1) Determine feasible, cost-effective payload crew activity planning integration methods. (2) Develop an implementation plan and guidelines for payload crew activity plan (CAP) integration between the JSC Orbiter planners and the Payload Centers. Subtask objectives and study activities were defined as: (1) Determine Crew Activity Planning Interfaces. (2) Determine Crew Activity Plan Type and Content. (3) Evaluate Automated Scheduling Tools. (4) Develop a draft Implementation Plan for Crew Activity Planning Integration. The basic guidelines were to develop a plan applicable to the Shuttle operations timeframe, utilize existing center resources and expertise as much as possible, and minimize unnecessary data exchange not directly productive in the development of the end-product timelines.

Observations on approximate integrations

A class of integration strategies is explored that fall in between the two extremes of symbolic integration and numerical quadrature, which are, respectively, aimed at the computer generation of answers in the form of exact expressions and numerical values. The theoretical advances in symbolic integration are discussed. Three major contexts of applications with attendant case studies, four possible types of strategies for approximate integration are examined. The feasibility and adequacy (or inadequancy) of MACSYMA for implementing these strategies are considered.
