Progress Update on the MUSIC Critical Benchmark

The Measurement of Uranium Subcritical and Critical (MUSiC) experiment was carried out from December 2020 through April 2021 at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). This measurement campaign featured bare configurations of the Rocky Flats highly-enriched uranium (HEU) shells, with each configuration having different numbers of these shells. The goal of the experiment was to test multiple neutron multiplicity detectors and measurement methods for a large range of neutron multiplication values. The large range of multiplications allows researchers to see when the combination of detectors and methods break down as the configurations reach the delayed supercritical window. The critical configurations were the extreme end of the multiplication range in MUSIC configurations. A critical benchmark in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook is planned to help further validate nuclear data. Even though there are many benchmarks focusing on the fast spectrum for highly-enriched uranium, an additional benchmark that is well documented and up to the modern standard of the handbook would be a welcome addition. Given that there are no other materials such as moderators or significant reflectors, and its similarity to Lady Godiva, it is possible that this could be very useful for validation of 235 U nuclear data in the future.

Post Irradiation Examination Results of Irradiated Yttrium Hydride

Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Microreactor program (MRP) aims to provide the fundamental data to enable the development of microreactors. As such, material property data of critical materials for microreactor technologies are researched. Because substoichiometric yttrium dihydride (YHx, where x<2) is considered as a potential solid neutron moderator, its material property data has been combined in the Advanced Moderator Material Handbook which includes thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of YHx with the exception of irradiated material’s properties due to limited PIE. To fill the knowledge gap for the irradiated YHx, specimens and irradiation capsules were prepared at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Specimens were irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL’s). post-irradiation examination (PIE) was performed at INL’s Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC). This report compiles the PIE results of irradiated YHx specimens through fiscal years 2022 and 2023 (FY22-23) . The PIE data will directly be incorporated into the newer version of the Advanced Moderator Material Handbook. The main takeaways include that (i) the geometrical stability and mechanical integrity of YHx was intact with couple exceptions after high-temperature irradiations (600-800°C), (ii) hydrogen content variation due to manufacturing or irradiation in YHx caused visible surface discoloration, that is also related to the microstructural changes, (iii) qualitative comparisons of PIE methods implied that H retention was significantly higher at 600°C as compared to 800°C, (iv) thermal properties included signatures correlated with the H loss or re-gain, (v) importance of manufacturing readiness and initial as-manufactured specimens history was emphasized, (vi) the needs of targeted irradiations focusing on temperature and time parameters and very targeted PIE were specified.

Multiple Critical Unresolved Region Integral Experiment (MCURIE): A Proposed Integral Critical Experimental Framework for Unresolved Region and Intermediate Energies

The Critical Unresolved Region Integral Experiment (CURIE) critical experiment was performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Device Assembly Facility (DAF) at the Nevada Nuclear Security Sites (NNSS) in 2020. The objective of CURIE was to improve the quality of integral nuclear data in the uranium-235 ( 235 U) unresolved resonance region (URR) by performing benchmark integral experiments that were sensitive to the URR energy ranges. The CURIE experiment was evaluated for the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) handbook and the benchmark evaluation was accepted in 2022. The URR is a region within the intermediate neutron energy range (the intermediate energy ranges from 0.7 eV to 100 keV). The observed resonance structure in neutron cross sections is due to discrete energy levels in the nucleus and are characterized by resonance parameters. In the URR region, the resonance parameters are only partially resolved as the resolution of the experiment techniques becomes comparable to the average width of the resonances themselves, and the resonances are so close to one another that the structure cannot be determined empirically. The ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 nuclear data libraries define the URR as beginning at 2.25 keV and continuing until 25 keV. There are minimal intermediate neutron energy benchmarks available in the ICSBEP benchmark handbook, and aside from CURIE there are none that are highly sensitive in the URR energy region. There is a current need for additional experiments sensitive to the URR energy region. There is a new proposed subgroup for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD NEA) Working Party on International Nuclear Data Evaluation Cooperation (WPEC), so any new models or information will need experimental validation and testing. The NEA Working Party on Nuclear Criticality Safety (WPNCS) recent experimental needs and priority list includes intermediate energy 235 U and 238 U experiments, as does the recent Integral Experiments to Address Nuclear Criticality Safety Needs Meeting (May 2023). A variant on the original CURIE experiment called the Multiple Critical Unresolved Region Integral Experiment (MCURIE) is proposed to provide further investigation of the intermediate and URR energy region for uranium. MCURIE will utilize existing fuels at NCERC but use alternative moderators and reflectors to modify the neutron absorption, scattering, and fission spectra of the experiments, allowing for precise targeting of nuclear data sensitivities. The overall goal of MCURIE is to develop a framework for designing and performing integral benchmark experiments with high sensitivities in the intermediate and URR energy regions for nuclear data validation.

Critical Experiments Targeting the Epithermal/Intermediate Cross Sections of Tantalum

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have collaborated to develop a capability to test the epithermal/intermediate cross sections of materials at the SNL critical experiments facility using the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuel. The Sandia Critical Experiments Program provides a specialized facility for performing water moderated and reflected critical experiments with UO 2 fuel rod arrays. The facility offers the ability to modify the core configuration and reactor tank to evaluate various reactor cores for pitch, moderator characteristics, and other criteria. A history of safe operations and flexibility in reactor core configuration has resulted in the completion of nine sets of critical benchmark experiments that have been documented in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The experiment described here is expected to be evaluated for inclusion in the 2024 edition of the ICSBEP Handbook.

A starting guide to root ecology: strengthening ecological concepts and standardising root classification, sampling, processing and trait measurements

In the context of a recent massive increase in research on plant root functions and their impact on the environment, root ecologists currently face many important challenges to keep on generating cutting-edge, meaningful and integrated knowledge. Consideration of the below-ground components in plant and ecosystem studies has been consistently called for in recent decades, but methodology is disparate and sometimes inappropriate. This handbook, based on the collective effort of a large team of experts, will improve trait comparisons across studies and integration of information across databases by providing standardised methods and controlled vocabularies. It is meant to be used not only as starting point by students and scientists who desire working on below-ground ecosystems, but also by experts for consolidating and broadening their views on multiple aspects of root ecology. Beyond the classical compilation of measurement protocols, we have synthesised recommendations from the literature to provide key background knowledge useful for: (1) defining below-ground plant entities and giving keys for their meaningful dissection, classification and naming beyond the classical fine-root vs coarse-root approach; (2) considering the specificity of root research to produce sound laboratory and field data; (3) describing typical, but overlooked steps for studying roots (e.g. root handling, cleaning and storage); and (4) gathering metadata necessary for the interpretation of results and their reuse. Most importantly, all root traits have been introduced with some degree of ecological context that will be a foundation for understanding their ecological meaning, their typical use and uncertainties, and some methodological and conceptual perspectives for future research. Considering all of this, we urge readers not to solely extract protocol recommendations for trait measurements from this work, but to take a moment to read and reflect on the extensive information contained in this broader guide to root ecology, including sections I–VII and the many introductions to each section and root trait description. Finally, it is critical to understand that a major aim of this guide is to help break down barriers between the many subdisciplines of root ecology and ecophysiology, broaden researchers’ views on the multiple aspects of root study and create favourable conditions for the inception of comprehensive experiments on the role of roots in plant and ecosystem functioning.

Sensitivity-based Experiment Design Optimization for a Molybdenum Critical Experiment

A lack of intermediate molybdenum benchmarks in the ICSBEP has been identified by LANL, Y-12, and IRSN. This lacking adversely effects criticality safety operations and leaves new differential molybdenum data unvalidated. NCERC is proposing a series of intermediate integral experiments to better the understanding of molybdenum systems. Using MCNP6.2 with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library a single unmoderated and four moderated system designs were identified using a sensitivity optimization method. Each proposed system was found to be at least twice as sensitive to the 95 Mo capture cross section in the URR as the sole existing intermediate molybdenum benchmark in the ISCBEP handbook. The addition of a new molybdenum sensitive intermediate system would improve future nuclear data evaluations.

Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Integral Experiment Execution (CED-3b Report)

This report documents the experimental configurations and measurements for IER-518: Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Experiments. These measurements involved a series of subcritical configurations at the Sandia Critical Experiments (SCX) facility at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The purpose of these measurements was to produce time tagged neutron count data of configurations that exceed a subcritical multiplication of 20, which is the high end of the fundamental physics benchmarks currently available in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project Handbook (ICSBEP). These measurements leverage experimental configurations 1 and detector systems 2 from previously accepted ICSBEP benchmark evaluations, allowing evaluations of these measurements to be performed at greatly reduced cost.
