Orbital positioning of domestic satellites

An important factor in establishing domestic or regional communication satellite systems which share a given frequency band is the positioning of the satellites in the arc of the geostationary orbit that is visible to the area to be served. A description is given of the results of orbit spacing studies performed with respect to the eight different space systems proposed to provide U.S. domestic communication services. Some tentative guidelines which may be of general use are proposed. Four sets of computer models were studied, taking into account quasi-homogeneous models, a five-system model, a heterogeneous model with 3-degree spacings, and a heterogeneous model with unequal spacings and with coordination.

On the inviscid rolled-up structure of lift-generated vortices

A simple form is presented of the relationships derived by Betz for the inviscid, fully developed structure of lift-generated vortices behind aircraft. An extension is then made to arbitrary span-load distributions by inferring guidelines for the selection of rollup centers for the vortex sheet. These techniques are easier to use and yield more realistic estimates of the rolled-up structure of vortices than the original form of Betz' theory when the span loading differs appreciably from elliptic loading.

Utilization of low-redundancy convolutional codes

This paper suggests guidelines for the utilization of low-redundancy convolutional codes with emphasis on providing a quick look capability (no decoding) and a moderate amount of coding gain. The performance and implementation complexity of threshold, Viterbi, and sequential decoding when used with low-redundancy, systematic, convolutional codes is discussed. An extensive list of optimum, short constraint length codes is found for use with Viterbi decoding, and several good, long constraint length codes are found for use with sequential decoding.

The design and performance of axially symmetrical contoured wall diffusers employing suction boundary layer control

This paper presents a procedure for the design and the performance prediction of axially symmetrical contoured wall diffusers employing suction boundary layer control. An inverse problem approach was used in the potential flow design of the diffuser wall contours. The experimentally observed flow characteristics and the stability of flows within the diffuser are also described. Guidelines for the design of low suction (less than 10 percent of the inlet flow) and thus high effectiveness contoured wall diffusers are also provided based on the results of the experimental program.

Photographic quantification of water quality in mixing zones

The waste effluent mixing zone is defined as the extent of a receiving water body utilized to dilute a waste charge to a concentration characteristic of a totally mixed condition. Color IR photography was used in conjunction with suspended solids water samples to quantitatively delineate the mixing zone resulting from the discharge of a paper mill effluent. Digital scanning microdensitometer data were used to estimate and delineate suspended solids concentrations on the basis of a semiempirical model. Model background, development, and implementation are described. Results indicate that the method is as reliable as conventional surface measuring techniques and is, in fact, more detailed. The method has direct application to the establishment of water quality guidelines, the development of both governmental and private sampling and surveillance programs, and the development of design and location criteria for industrial and municipal waste effluent outfalls.

A procedure for verifying the structural integrity of an existing pressurized wind tunnel

The present work describes the approach employed in verifying the structural integrity at maximum operating pressure of a low turbulence pressurized wind tunnel built in 1939-1940. The approach utilized existing ASME Code guidelines and fracture mechanics techniques in combination with the latest nondestructive examination methods to validate the desired life of the facility while minimizing reconstruction or major modifications. Detailed stress analyses using a finite element computer program and a numerical integration program were performed on critical areas of the tunnel. Critical vessel areas were evaluated for remaining fatigue life. Fracture mechanics analyses of the shell were performed at various regions, and critical flaw sizes at each location were determined. Analysis of the test data permitted the remaining useful life of the tunnel to be estimated at 8 to 10 years.

LST and instrument considerations

In order that the LST meet its scientific objectives and also be a National Astronomical Space Facility during the 1980's and 1990's, broad requirements have been levied by the scientific community. These scientific requirements can be directly translated into design requirements and specifications for the scientific instruments. The instrument ensemble design must be consistent with a 15-year operational lifetime. Downtime for major repair/refurbishment or instrument updating must be minimized. The overall efficiency and performance of the instruments should be maximized. Modularization of instruments and instrument subsystems, some degree of on-orbit servicing (both repair and replacement), on-axis location, minimizing the number of reflections within instruments, minimizing polarization effects, and simultaneous operation of the F/24 camera with other instruments, are just a few of the design guidelines and specifications which can and will be met in order that these broader scientific requirements be satisfied.-

Space shuttle sortie payload crew safety and systems compatibility criteria. Volume 1: Executive summary

As part of the effort to reduce the costs of shuttle payloads, this study was performed to determine the minimum, mandatory design and verification criteria necessary to insure that sortie payloads are compatible with the space shuttle system; distinguishing them from those criteria related primarily to mission success, configuration choices, management prerogatives, or other cost-benefit variables which are, therefore, discretionary to payload project management. It was concluded that utilization of the mandatory design criteria, presented in this report, as the basis for sortie payload specifications will produce basic systems compatibility between the orbiter and its sortie payloads at reduced costs. Also, when additional criteria are generated due to changes in subsystems, designs, or guidelines, the categorization methodology developed can aid managerial decision-making concerning these criteria. To a limited degree, the compatibility criteria as defined in this study reflect a portion of the total system safety effort involved in a manned space program.

The 15 cm diameter ion thruster research

The startup reliability of a 15 cm diameter mercury bombardment ion thruster which employs a pulsed high voltage tickler electrode on the main and neutralizer cathodes is examined. Startup of the thruster is achieved 100% of the time on the main cathode and 98.7% of the time on the neutralizer cathode over a 3640 cycle test. The thruster was started from a 20 C initial condition and operated for an hour at a 600 mA beam current. An energy efficiency of 75% and a propellant utilization efficiency of 77% was achieved over the complete cycle. The effect of a single cusp magnetic field thruster length on its performance is discussed. Guidelines are formulated for the shaping of magnetic field lines in thrusters. A model describing double ion production in mercury discharges is presented. The production route is shown to occur through the single ionic ground state. Photographs of the interior of an operating-hollow cathode are presented. A cathode spot is shown to be present if the cathode is free of low work-function surfaces. The spot is observed if a low work-function oxide coating is applied to the cathode insert. Results show that low work-function oxide coatings tend to migrate during thruster operation.
